A strong rerelease that shows how far this author has grown
First, let me say this plainly, I love this author. She is one of the coldest with a pen, typewriter, laptop, whatever she uses. What I appreciated most before I even got deep into the story was her honesty in the foreword. She was upfront that this was written years ago and that her writing has grown since then. I respected that a lot. That kind of vulnerability matters. As a reader, it was really cool to get the chance to go back and read an earlier version of her voice, especially knowing how strong and polished her writing is now.
This was my first time reading Childish Games We Play, so I’m glad the author rereleased it and combined both parts into one book. That made the reading experience feel fuller, and I liked being able to stay with the story all the way through.
Now let’s get to Layloni and King.
Layloni went through so much pain, betrayal, and foolishness from people who should have loved and protected her. I hated Glen. I hated her mother. And Shadonna got on my nerves too. The amount of betrayal Lay had to survive was wild, and that emotional damage really shaped the whole story. On King’s side, I liked that there was substance to his story too. His need for closure over his father’s murder added real weight, and I’m not even going to lie, the way he handled the men responsible was very satisfying for this type of story. That revenge arc hit for me.
I also liked how the author tied G into King’s family history. Making Lay’s longtime boyfriend connected to the man involved in King’s father’s death added a strong layer of interpersonal conflict. That was messy in the best way. The side stories also helped a lot. I enjoyed the friendships, the extra drama, the alpha male foolishness from King, and some genuinely funny moments from the side characters. His reaction to Monty had me laughing because it was such a King move. Even the supporting cast brought a lot to the book.
Now, I do have to be honest. Layloni worked my nerves badly at times. I understood that she had trauma and that she did not know how to love properly, and that absolutely mattered. But there were moments where it was frustrating watching her distance herself from people who genuinely cared for her while continuing to let harmful people stay in her space. That was hard to read. Still, I also understood that trauma does not always make people move in ways that make sense from the outside. So while she irritated me, I could still see what the author was doing with her character.
As for King, he and Layloni both played way too many games, but I did enjoy watching them slowly figure it out. Neither of them really knew how to love right, but they learned, and by the end I was happy they got their ending.
Overall, I’m glad this was rereleased. It gives readers a chance to experience an earlier work from an author whose talent is undeniable, and even with the rougher edges, the story still had heart, drama, pain, humor, and a satisfying finish.
I really enjoyed this book and loved that I caught the re-release to get both parts at once. Overall, I loved the MMC and FMC’s journey to love. IMO King played wayyyy more than his “Loni”. Expecting her to not even look at a man while he gets to keep a rotating door of women is so toxic! Especially when he hadn’t even confessed real feelings before declaring his “terms and conditions” 🙄. However, I loved the way he cared for her from their first meeting. Waiting for her to heal from her previous pain and relationship was noble of him - he was def about action.
All of the villains got what they deserved except, Shadonna. I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but I was enjoying seeing her positive character arc. So for it to end with her being trafficked into a sex cult and brainwashed was quite sad to read. Layloni def had a heart of gold with forgiveness.
Overall would recommend and would love to get an audiobook and a little extended epilogue.

I could definitely tell this was one of the earlier books in this author’s catalog because baby😌…the grammatical and typographical errors were peeking through a lil bit.🤭😩 BUT listen…don’t let that fool you, because the STORY still ATE!! 🔥
This was an intense love story with some real heavy moments, so just know there are a few triggers sprinkled in there. ⚠️
I can honestly say I was fully invested, and while reading this book I wanted EVERY character to get exactly what they deserved… whether it was good or bad!!
I was NOT disappointed!!🤭😏
“What goes around comes around” was in FULL effect in this book!!
Every dog really had its day, and the “King” most definitely got his Queen!! 👑💋
These two took turns working my nerves but knowing Layloni had only been with one man, was betrayed by said man and others, and was very young, so, I give her grace with her moods. Now King on the other hand, had never been with one woman. He was used to women moving at his command. He was also grieving and seeking revenge, so love was furthest from his mind. Both had people in their corner trying to give them the best possible advice to not lose their one. It was a stressful journey but they got there. Shadonna had an out, several of them. She was forgiven and some more but oh well, she chose otherwise. I do believe if you’d wrote this today, King would’ve handled all his business so the kidnapping doesn’t happen. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
It was hard to read this story. Layloni was one of the most weakest, no self-preservation bitch i ever had the displeasure to read. When she went to go see her mom I wanted to jump through this screen and bitch slap her up and down the side walk. How could one person be so stupid. Prince should of shot her ass once he was done with her. Put her out of her pathetic misery. She needed some real deep seated therapy. She wasn't even broken. She was shattered. And her running after Shadonna after all she put her through made me want to scream. I glad that when it comes to having her back Rellianah didn't play about her but the shit she said to King was disrespectful af. She was a spiteful evil little witch.
Layloni was going through it in this story, I felt sorry for her. But her heart was too big for me, from being betrayed by her own mama to her best friend she still forgave and tried to make a mends with them, like girl you can’t save everybody. But when King crossed her path there was instant connection, they both were toxic, due to past traumas. But I’m glad they were able to work things out and they both got their happiness at the end! Oh and I was happy to get a life update from Cream and Relli crazy self.
I’ve didn’t read this book previously, so I’m glad you rereleased it and combined it as one. I enjoyed this book. Layloni and King played a lot of games, but got it together. They both have been through some challenges and didn’t know how to love properly, but they learned. Had the perfect ending.
Relli to much. The mama trash. Shadonna is a 304 she is who she is. Loni naive and dumb. She pissed me off just about the whole book. Like girl move the TF on please. King needed to grow up and let that hurt go. Cause boy u need you ssa whooped. Overall it was a solid 3.5 ⭐⭐⭐ for me
This man right here. Whew I loved his energy. It was his audacity for me. He at least kept it real though. The fact that she gave him a run for his money is what did it for me.
Lawwwwd this book had me on the edge of my seat as I didn’t know what to expect but it was a great messy read! Masterpiece has grown as a writer but you can definitely see her talent budding in this book. The story had me entranced from the first chapter on!
King and Layloni took me on an emotional roller coaster with all the pain and drama they had. They say keep enemies close, but friends closer. Not sure how I feel about Shadonna, but I wish her the best. I do want a friend like Rellianah.
Unfortunately, this one is on me because I know that I don’t have the temperament for silliness. So I should have skipped right over this book. Therefore, I’m not going to talk about it too bad, it just wasn’t for me! Beautiful cover though.
