Ennis began his comic-writing career in 1989 with the series Troubled Souls. Appearing in the short-lived but critically-acclaimed British anthology Crisis and illustrated by McCrea, it told the story of a young, apolitical Protestant man caught up by fate in the violence of the Irish 'Troubles'. It spawned a sequel, For a Few Troubles More, a broad Belfast-based comedy featuring two supporting characters from Troubled Souls, Dougie and Ivor, who would later get their own American comics series, Dicks, from Caliber in 1997, and several follow-ups from Avatar.

Another series for Crisis was True Faith, a religious satire inspired by his schooldays, this time drawn by Warren Pleece. Ennis shortly after began to write for Crisis' parent publication, 2000 AD. He quickly graduated on to the title's flagship character, Judge Dredd, taking over from original creator John Wagner for a period of several years.

Ennis' first work on an American comic came in 1991 when he took over DC Comics's horror title Hellblazer, which he wrote until 1994, and for which he currently holds the title for most issues written. Steve Dillon became the regular artist during the second half of Ennis's run.

Ennis' landmark work to date is the 66-issue epic Preacher, which he co-created with artist Steve Dillon. Running from 1995 to 2000, it was a tale of a preacher with supernatural powers, searching (literally) for God who has abandoned his creation.

While Preacher was running, Ennis began a series set in the DC universe called Hitman. Despite being lower profile than Preacher, Hitman ran for 60 issues (plus specials) from 1996 to 2001, veering wildly from violent action to humour to an examination of male friendship under fire.

Other comic projects Ennis wrote during this time period include Goddess, Bloody Mary, Unknown Soldier, and Pride & Joy, all for DC/Vertigo, as well as origin stories for The Darkness for Image Comics and Shadowman for Valiant Comics.

After the end of Hitman, Ennis was lured to Marvel Comics with the promise from Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada that he could write The Punisher as long as he cared to. Instead of largely comical tone of these issues, he decided to make a much more serious series, re-launched under Marvel's MAX imprint.

In 2001 he briefly returned to UK comics to write the epic Helter Skelter for Judge Dredd.

Other comics Ennis has written include War Story (with various artists) for DC; The Pro for Image Comics; The Authority for Wildstorm; Just a Pilgrim for Black Bull Press, and 303, Chronicles of Wormwood (a six issue mini-series about the Antichrist), and a western comic book, Streets of Glory for Avatar Press.

In 2008 Ennis ended his five-year run on Punisher MAX to debut a new Marvel title, War Is Hell: The First Flight of the Phantom Eagle.

In June 2008, at Wizard World, Philadelphia, Ennis announced several new projects, including a metaseries of war comics called Battlefields from Dynamite made up of mini-series including Night Witches, Dear Billy and Tankies, another Chronicles of Wormwood mini-series and Crossed both at Avatar, a six-issue miniseries about Butcher (from The Boys) and a Punisher project reuniting him with artist Steve Dillon (subsequently specified to be a weekly mini-series entitled Punisher: War Zone, to be released concurrently with the film of the same name).

Let's face it. I have an iron stomach. I can handle all the over-the-top violence a comic can throw at me. I like a good bit of horror, too. But what I like best of all?

Good Satire.

And let's face it, mate, this one goes all bollocks on every superhero franchise we've got. Who are the bad guys? Who are good? It doesn't matter. They're all summed up quite nicely by Butcher's Great Power observation. It sums up nicely that great power corrupts absolutely. And no, I'm not using the word he uses. I may enjoy a great R-rated comic but it doesn't mean I have to write an R-rated review. :)

I'm telling you, the big blowout oat the end of this, with the war, the coup, the everything... was freaking amazing. I even got that huge sinking feeling in the whole wrap-up that turned into a dark depression. And yet, the comic still kept coming on strong. And ended strong.

This is right up there with The Watchmen for me. Maybe, in some ways, it is better. Not all the way better, but **** me, mate, I had me some great laughs. This is a classic. I'll be making no bones about it.

I'll admit I thought the backstory got a bit too detailed and honestly became a bit of a slog through a huge exposition dump early in this one, but the ending more than made up for it. It may not have been the ending some would have wanted, but it was the ending the story demanded, IMO.

The TV show seems to be an entirely different beast, and that's OK. Right now (having watched only the first season) I can't imagine it ever reaching the level of the graphic novel, which is a true classic, in all its gory, unflinching glory!

Really liked it!

Overall a good series, with its ups and downs, but towards the end was the shocker, and even though I saw some of it coming, I really liked the whole thing, especially the end.

Great series, and would recommend!

Ennis did it again!

Any reader who gets past the initial feeling of over-provocative violence, sex and (in many cases) violent and disturbing sexual acts and assaults, is in for a full-layered story of pain, friendship, trust and a lot of other large questions of life. Now I only hope the upcoming TV series can do this justice and be at least half as good or interesting.

The final installment of the omnibus series.
Once again one of the miniseries (Butcher, Baker, Candlestickmaker) is omitted. But while it provides interesting insights into and background of one of the charakters (Butcher, of course), this one is the least problematic to have been left out. The miniseries is available in a separate TPB, so if you want to read it (and I do recommend it), you can do it by purchasing that one.

However, the story itself is different in this third part of the omnibus series. Drawing to a conclusion, it goes on to tie up loose ends afterwards, and provides an interesting (if not totally satisfying, methinks) finale and quite a few twists (even though most of them have been foreshadowed in more or less obvious ways). But the narrative yet again takes on more depth, as the crass thoroughfare of the series steps into the background, leaving the stage to the inner turmoil, the problems and the moral dilemmata of the main character(s). Unfortunately, this means that the story drags a bit - much as this is all necessary and important for the character development and the narrative in general, having it all out in one big part means that the series loses a significant amount of tempo, which is unfortunate.

Still, I loved the logical conclusions that Ennis led the narrative to. All in all, a very entertaining read.

-No...

It always happens eventually. You re-read this classic Garth Ennis series, note the remarkable pathos it manages to attain in its final act and then, well, it's all over. It's a similar feeling evoked by Ennis' other big original series like Hitman and (arguably) his masterpiece, Preacher.

Ultimately this is a series about broken men who have either lost - or pushed away - the women in their lives and how catastrophic that can be. The last ten or so issues are absolutely gutting, although contain enough hope to have some brightness in the dark.

Personally, I hope the TV series can reach even a fraction of this grand ending but I'll guess we'll see in a couple of years. Anyway, The Boys. Starts slow, has moments of indulgence but is ultimately a bloody great read.

Oof, this one was too much for me.

I don't consider myself much of a prude, but the explicit violence and assault and gore that not only feels like it's trying too hard to be edgy or provocative, but also doesn't add anything to the plot was too much for me in this one.

While there are some interesting revelations I overall wasn't particularly impressed and wished I'd jumped ship on the series sooner.

You see what happens at Herogasm when all of the heroes go to relax at a resort while the rest of the world thinks that they are saving the world in outer space. I was excited to finally hear Frenchie's story, Mother's Milk's story, and the Female's story. The reach of Vought American is revealed as the company aims to eliminate the president and replace him with Vic the Veep.

Content: Graphic violence and sex.

The Boys is a fantastic comics, a true work of art. Original conception, great execution. It can be too forced sometimes, trying too hard to shock you, but it has a great plot. And this last part is just a non-stop thrill ride that never lets up. A fitting end to a grand series.

Brutal .
