In Preaching Christ from Proverbs, Jonathan Akin not only does a masterful job of teaching the reader how to interpret the text of Proverbs, but explaining how every proverb ultimately points the reader to Jesus Christ. Akin’s work will benefit preachers and small group leaders immensely as they seek to apply Luke 24:44 to their expositional efforts. No Old Testament library would be complete without it.
“There is a moral and ethical component to wisdom.” p.39 “Foolishness is the lack of discernment between good and evil.” p.40 “The fool is unable to see the world the way it really is.” p.54 “Jesus can save you from your foolishness.” p.113 “In order to walk in the wisdom of Proverbs, an inner transformation needs to take place.” p.44 “When we preach Proverbs, therefore, we must expose people’s failure to live up to the ethical standard it reveals.” p.32
Proverbs may be one of the most difficult books to connect with the others in terms of the Bible's main story and, therefore, one of the most difficult books to preach Christ from. Akin offers some good help in this book. Jesus is the only wise and obedient son who blessed his Father, but he suffered as a foolish and disobedient son in order to bring foolish and disobedient sons to wisdom. This book will help if you're trying to work through preaching Christ from wisdom literature.
This book was very helpful. Good reminder to not preach through Proverbs in a moralistic way void of Jesus. I appreciated the Christ-centered focus of this book. Recommended to anyone preaching or studying through Proverbs.
