The Call of Lent to Penitence, Discipline and Christ

Forty-one short readings, primarily for Lent and Easter but instructive at any time of the year. First published in 1917 whilst Dr Moule (1841-1920) was Bishop of Durham. 'This book has been written with a single and simple aim. It hardly needs saying that I address it only to the Christian believer, asking to minister to him, if I may, in all humbleness and fellowship of spirit, in the path where a living and growing holiness is sought. I have long been convinced that the inmost secret of such life and growth is nothing other than faith, that is to say, in fact and practice, a trusted Christ, welcomed without reserve into the heart. But also I realize, and always more as life advances, that godly fear, lowly penitence, and watchful discipline, are, in the progress of the Christian life, vital to the health, strength, and simplicity of that faith. From that point of view I find an ever new significance and value in the religious observance of Lent, with its tender and glorious climax in the Passion and Easter.'
