After growing up in an orphanage, twenty-two-year-old Aurelia Jenkins lives an ordinary life. She loves her job, walks her dog, and spends far too much time at the local bookshop and café with her vivacious best friend, Esmee. Magic belongs in books, not in her veins.
Until the night it awakens in her.
A violent encounter unlocks a power she cannot explain, forcing her to flee and leave everything behind. When Aurelia meets Asher, the fire warrior sworn to protect her, sparks fly. While he may be infuriating—and, okay, his dimples are really distracting—Asher is the only one who can train her to control her abilities. Air fuels a magic in her called animadverto, and she must travel to the Kingdom in the Sky to discover her birthright.
Years ago, the Purple Slay shattered the four elemental Kingdoms. No one knows who orchestrated the massacre. No one knows why. But whispers claim Aurelia’s power could change everything.
But Aurelia’s magic is not simply air. And when her heart shatters, so will the world.
Iris de Vree resides in Bierbeek, Belgium, with her boyfriend and their two loyal golden retrievers, Milo and Teddie. Their adventurous lifestyle is fueled by her boyfriend’s semi-professional poker career, which takes them on exciting journeys around the globe. Each new destination serves as inspiration for the thrilling fantasy realms Iris creates in her books.
Her love for storytelling began at a young age and has been a constant companion throughout her life. While pursuing a degree in journalism, she realized that her true passion lay in crafting fantastical narratives rather than reporting facts.
Now, at thirty-two, she has fulfilled a lifelong dream: seeing her own book on the shelf alongside the authors who inspired her. But her journey doesn’t end there—she hopes to one day read her stories aloud to young readers across the world, bringing her fantasy worlds to life beyond the page.
Esmee brengt zoveel sfeer en humor, love her. En Asher als love interest? Chef’s kiss. Charmant, zelfzeker, beschermend… ik ben zó benieuwd hoe hun verhaal verdergaat!
𝔼ℕ𝔾 First: thank you Iris, for letting me be part of your ARC group and for letting me read Mend to be Broken – which was released yesterday!
The story follows Aurelia, who leads a quiet life with her dog August 🐾 and her best friend Esmee. Until one evening she finds herself in danger… and something inside her snaps. Magic erupts – inexplicable, wild, protective. Aurelia flees and meets Asher: the handsome warrior who has sworn to protect her. He teaches her everything about the magic – animadverto – that stirs within her, trains her and prepares her for her return to her realm, Kingdom in the Sky.
Together, they try to uncover who was behind The Purple Slay, a massacre that left the four realms torn apart. Aurelia’s magic could change everything… but when her heart breaks, her power is unleashed in full.
💭 Wow, wow, wow! Iris, you’ve written such a wonderful story. It’s so lovely to read fantasy/romantasy from a Belgian author! I hope everyone reading this picks up your book and discovers what a brilliant author you are.
The writing style is fluid, clear and compelling. The world is beautifully constructed and my imagination was running wild. The structure is also very well put together. There’s clearly going to be another book (that cliffhanger… help), but so much happens before that. Action, plot twists, suspense, emotions – it’s all there 🙈
What I also really appreciate is how Iris weaves current and important themes into her story: diversity, body positivity, but also sexual violence and consent. It’s so important to keep highlighting these issues. Aurelia grew up as an orphan, and when she thinks people are abandoning her because she isn’t good, beautiful or thin enough… that really broke my heart. It makes her character so human.
And I haven’t even mentioned the friendship between Aurelia and Esmee. One of the most beautiful I’ve ever read – pure, unconditional, soulmate vibes. Esmee brings so much atmosphere and humour; I love her. And Asher as the love interest? Chef’s kiss. Charming, confident, protective… I’m so curious to see how their story unfolds!
I couldn’t put this book down! Despite being labeled a slow burn, I found the pacing of the enemies-to-lovers build-up just right. The world-building, character dynamics & intricate plot blend flawlessly, creating an engaging experience that kept me hooked from beginning to end.
This was my first time reading anything by this author and I’m officially a huge fan! I can’t wait to explore more of her work.
Now I’m just hoping the sequel comes out soon because I’m way too impatient to find out what happens next!
Waardoor haar gewone leven voorbij is.
I love this book! I instantly connected with the main character’s personality, which made the whole reading experience even more immersive. I was utterly drawn into this magical world and didn’t want to leave it for a second. The characters are well-developed, with strong growth and compelling relationships that feel real and meaningful. The plot is gripping and keeps you hooked from beginning to end, and the writing style is smooth, engaging, and a joy to read. I genuinely can’t wait for the second book and to be back in this world!
I received an ARC of this book and I'm so grateful for this opportunity!
I already loved Iris De Vree’s previous books, but this one might even be my favorite so far. Her writing style is incredibly smooth and easy to read. The story flows effortlessly and I never felt any hiccups while reading. It’s the kind of book that pulls you in without you even realizing how many pages you’ve read.
What I loved the most were the characters and the plot. I connected a lot with Aurelia, especially because of how much she loves her dog. The way she would do anything for him felt very real and relatable to me. I also absolutely adored her friendship with Esmee. It’s the kind of friendship every girl wishes she had. Supportive, loyal, and genuine.
The story also brings in some of my favorite fantasy elements: secret heritage, hidden powers, and discovering a past you never knew existed. Watching Aurelia slowly uncover the truth about her history and her parents was fascinating.
The romance was another highlight. It has a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers vibe with a lot of banter, sarcasm, and tension between Aurelia and a certain character. It takes time for Aurelia to warm up to him, which made the development feel very natural.
The pacing felt perfect to me. I was told this one might be a bit slower than Iris De Vree’s previous books, but honestly I never felt bored for a second.
Some of my favorite elements were: - Aurelia’s relationship with her dog - Her friendship with Esmee - The direction the soulbond storyline seems to be taking. If it goes where I think it will, it’s something I’ve honestly never seen before in fantasy.
Personally, I didn’t have any negative points. Everything just worked for me.
Tropes / elements you can expect: - Found family - Slow burn romance - Enemies to lovers vibes - Hidden powers - Secret kingdoms and heritage
And then… the ending.
Let’s just say Iris De Vree has a serious talent for cliffhangers. She already did it in her first book, and she absolutely did it again here. The ending is a TOTAL cliffhanger and now I desperately need the next book. That woman has me in a chokehold, literally.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a very readable fantasy with the perfect balance between plot, humor, banter, sarcasm, and emotional moments, without overwhelming world-building.
And honestly, if you want to support a Belgian author writing fantasy in English, Iris De Vree absolutely deserves it. She has so much talent and I cannot wait to see where this story goes next.
‧₊˚✧ 4.5 ✧˚₊‧ Once again it is time for an ARC, this time around from my homeland Belgium. I am super proud to be part of Iris De Vree's ARC team. Even though I had a digital copy of Mend To Be Broken, I couldn't help myself and buy the special edition at YA-Day in Ghent, where it was for sale even before the release date. And how pretty is this book??? The special edition is such a pretty book and so worth the money.
I got pulled in by this book from the first sentence. My interest was immediately tickled. Although I got to be honest, the first line I read from this book was this last one, because I am weird like that. But enough about my weird tendencies. I will share with you this very interesting first sentence, so here we go: 'Exactly one week before I stab Josh, I'm running hopelessly late for my weekly coffee date with Esmee.' Bam. I hope I already sold you.
But this book was the gift that kept on giving. Because in this book we have a plus-sized FMC, who feels very real to read. At times she's unsure about herself and her body and I think that is very relatable and shows how realistic the characters are. The story also is action-packed from the beginning, the tempo not lulling on a single occasion in my opinion.
The world we get to know seems to have a matriarchal background, which was also interesting to read. I hope to read more about this in book two, because it has only been touched at shortly but definitely deserves some more time in the spotlight.
Then I want to talk about the romance. I had the feeling this was going to be a slow burn and it was, so it definitely gets more points for that in my book. Next to that there's also a lot of focus on the platonic relationships which I really appreciate in a book. The side characters definitely got some time to shine and I can't wait to read book two!
When I got to summarise this book, I think Iris De Vree has an interesting story and world out there in our reality. I want to thank her for being able to be part of her ARC team. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to my audience and especially the special edition. Give this book a chance, you won't regret it!
First of all, thank you Iris for having me again as an ARC reader! Hope this honest review helps you to decide whether this book is for you. Enjoy! (BTW the special edition has the most beautiful sprayed edges and pretty foiling and stunning end pages. A real shelf trophy! 🤩)
This book is for you if you love: * dogs * portal fantasy * a very angry fmc * elemental magic
I loved the action scenes in this book. The elemental magic has the capacity to take these scenes and make them fast-paced, high tension parts and Iris does this well! I hope the sequel will lean even more into it 'cause that ballroom scene was just 🤯. Idem dito with the massive cliffhanger at the end... 💔
The writing style of this story feels young: the fmc Aurelia jumps from one strong emotion to the other and I suffered from whiplash. This becomes less of an issue further on in the book. It was one of the reasons why I didn't like the fmc right away. The names of places and events feel young-ish as well. The term Purple Slay and Kingdom of Skye being examples of it. I was thinking this is more for a younger YA public (bar one small part of a scene and the swear words Iris likes to use - no judgement, it's just a choice she made). A last example is the nicknames: Aurelia is also adressed as Li, Princess and Little storm. Esmee goes by Es, the mmc is Dimples. August is also Augie/fluffball.
This fantasy is quite romance driven. The mmc is mostly described by the hard panes of his torso/abs/chest or his golden/honey and amber specked eyes and his dimpled smile. I can't quite flesh him out in my imagination. But the tension building and the denial the main characters keep up, give this arc a nice drive. Am I going weak in the knees? Almost.
So all in all a book with lots of fun stuff, some nice stuff and some things to think about. Will rate it 3,5☆ on my instagram (come on Goodreads, we want half stars!).
‘Fan-fucking-tastic’ Quote Aurelia.
Theatrical, huh? Fine. I’ll bring the entire drama club with a hint of my writer’s imagination.'
‘Maybe we were meant to be broken. Maybe we can still mend the broken pieces back together in the end. Time will tell.'
Iris de Vree lives in Belgium, has two golden retrievers, and it shows. Dogs play a notable role in her books.
Some stories you can simply picture, as if you've stepped into a film. Mend to Be Broken is exactly that kind of book. Iris de Vree writes with such feeling, colour and atmosphere that every page breathes.
Aurelia grew up in an orphanage and carries that emptiness with her. That gives the story an immediacy, something that gets under your skin. Her daily life revolves largely around Coffee & Books, a café-bookshop I could picture so vividly that I almost wanted to order a coffee there myself.
When she suddenly has to flee and finds shelter in a cottage in the woods, described in her mother's diary, the fantasy element truly begins. She discovers she can control the wind. Author Iris makes it feel believable, because Aurelia's inner journey weighs heavier than her magical powers.
The slow burn with Asher worked for me, and how. No over-the-top dramatic gestures, just tension that builds quietly. So much stronger than a romance that's in full swing after twenty pages. Asher is a warrior of fire, literally and figuratively, sent to protect her, and oh, does he deliver! 😜
The worldbuilding around The Purple Slay and the four kingdoms is explained beautifully in a short space of time, yet never felt rushed.
The bond between Aurelia and her dog August, the friendship with Esmee, the atmosphere the author manages to conjure... it makes so much right. This is a book that carries you along, and one that stays with you even after you turn the last page. For anyone who loves magic, loyalty and a story that takes its time: just read it!
First of all, a huge thank you to Iris de Vree for this ARC!
A fantasy story from a local author? I was immediately sold. Having devoured her previous two books, my expectations were high and once again she exceeded them. From the very first page, I was completely immersed. The story unfolds at a perfect pace, drawing you in effortlessly and keeping you hooked with just enough tension and unanswered questions to make it impossible to put down. It is one of those books where “just one more chapter” quickly turns into reading far later than planned. What truly makes this story shine is the depth of its relationships. The romantic tension is captivating and adds an exciting layer to the plot, while the friendships bring warmth, heart, and authenticity. These connections make the world feel alive and give the story so much more emotional weight. And of course, I cannot forget the Goldie, who is simply adorable and an absolute highlight throughout the book.
The character development is beautifully done. Each character grows in their own way, and these personal journeys are so seamlessly intertwined that everything comes together in a rich and layered narrative that feels incredibly satisfying. And then… the ending. I was genuinely on the edge of my seat, completely caught off guard. It left me in total shock and immediately craving more.
This is a story that lingers long after the final page, a carefully crafted and heartfelt fantasy that I would absolutely recommend.
Iris De Vree thank you so much for letting me be part of your ARC team!
Mend to Be Broken was such an easy 5 star read for me. I’ve read Iris de Vree’s previous books and already loved them, but this one is definitely my favorite so far.
I was hooked pretty much right away. Her writing is just really easy to get into and the story flows so well that I kept reading without even realizing how much time had passed. I know it’s meant to be a bit of a slow burn, but the pacing honestly worked perfectly for me.
I really loved the characters, especially Aurelia. She felt very real and I found it easy to connect with her, especially with how deeply she cares about the people around her. The relationships in this book were one of my favorite parts. The friendships felt genuine and supportive, and I just loved that aspect of the story.
The plot kept me interested the whole time too. I love stories that slowly reveal hidden powers and long buried secrets, and this one did that really well. It was fun seeing everything come together and learning more about Aurelia’s story.
And the ending?? I was literally crying. It hit way harder than I expected and just made me love the book even more.
Overall, this book just had everything I enjoy in a fantasy read and I already can’t wait for more.
"Then came Phantom Night. Every year, on the seventeenth day of April, one Kingdom hosts a gathering to celebrate the peace between us. Until the Purple Slay."
What an amazing book! For real. This book was so good, I would never have guessed this was a self published book. From the artwork and the cover, the details that were carefully added to the book, even the lay-out of the text... it looks and feels like a book published by a publisher.
The way this story unfolded was just magical. The first chapters were a necessary introduction to the fantasy world, but I was hooked from page one! This book was a "let's read one chapter in bed and suddenly it is 2 a.m."-book. The paste in this book was just right, the charachters very lovable and the plot... it just made sense! I absolutely devoured this!
Although I loved this, some elements were a bit... vague to me? Sometimes I had to reread a certain passage to understand. But that was only thing in this book I can criticize! And it did not happen that often.
And, God, the end! I don't know how to survive until the next book! 😭 I can not wait to see what happens next, what will happen to Esmee and how the relationship between Aurelia and Asher will unfold. And i will scream at the top of my longs that people should read this. YOU HAVE TO!
Thank you so much, Iris, for this ARC. I loved every second of this!
Hoi!
✨ Recensie: Mend to be Broken – Iris De Vree ✨
Mend to be Broken is een fijn fantasyverhaal vol magie, spanning en romantiek.
“Mend to be Broken” is the third book I’ve read by Iris De Vree, and since I enjoyed her previous book, I was extremely excited to dive into this one. We follow Aurelia, who lives an ordinary life together with her dog, August, and her best friend, Esmee. One night, in an act of self-defense, magic awakens within her. She is forced to flee and leave everything behind.
Along the way, she meets Asher, who seems to know more about her family’s history. Aurelia must travel to the Kingdom of the Air to reclaim her birthright and learn to control her magic, called animadverto. However, due to a slaughter event in the past known as the Purple Slay, the elemental Kingdoms have been shattered, and not everyone is pleased with her reappearance.
This story grabs your attention from the very first page. Aurelia is a relatable character, and her friendship with Esmee is admirable. The first chapters slowly introduce us to their daily lives, while gradually revealing information about Aurelia’s magic. As the tension builds, the stakes become increasingly clear. The Purple Slay immediately sparks curiosity and makes you want to uncover more.
The way Iris De Vree portrays the elemental Kingdoms is vivid, making you truly want to step inside the book. Animadverto is such a unique magic system. The character development really peaks, especially when it comes to the friendship between Aurelia and Esmee. The romance between Aurelia and Asher is introduced slowly, but the chemistry between them lingers from their very first meeting, leaving you craving more.
The story also incorporates important themes such as body positivity and diversity, alongside heavier topics like sexual violence, which makes it really stand out. The ending kept me on the edge of my seat—and then the cliffhanger! I can’t wait to read the second book as soon as possible.
If you’re looking for a unique fantasy story with a lovely slow-burn romance, I highly recommend this book. And I also need to make an honorable mention of the adorable golden retriever, August—he truly stole my heart!
Thank you, Iris De Vree, for an eARC of this book!
My first read by Iris de Vree and I will be back for more for sure! This was one of those reads where you start the book and before you know it, it's finished. I loved every second of it and I can't wait for the second book in this series!
Iris de Vree has a really nice writingstyle, making it easy to fall in love with the characters and the places the story takes place. I personally loved that the FMC of the story was a plus-sized woman, making it a bit more realistic because she had a love/hate relationship with her own body. And can we talk a bit about August? I freakin loved the puffin loving dog! he was soo adorable!
This book was an amazing mix between action, adventure, learning more about your true self and a bit of romance. And with the ending Iris gave us readers, I cannot wait to read book 2!
Iris de Vree thank you so much for this ARC to read and review in the blogtour.
Such a good book! I was soooo drowned into the book that I wanted to keep reading! I love how Aurelia loves her dog and how the bond is between her best friend and her, how they appear to be just like us in some ways, I like that she's described as just a women being with curves, not the perfect XS size but she loves herself and with her affirmations, I really liked that too! I love the journey they are on and how it develops! I also chuckeld a few times with the humor and sarcasm🤭👌🏼 I'm really glad I came across such a great dutch autor who writes incredible english books!😊 Can't wait to read her other books!
The end is suchhh a cliffhanger I CAN'T!!
I really can't wait for the second part and also the rest of the story to be there!!!🤩🤩 I'm really curious for it! Fan-fucking-tastic like Aurelia would say😉
Mend to be Broken is the third book by Iris de Vree. I haven’t read any of her books before, but the synopsis of this fantasy drew me to it. Even though I wouldn’t pick this book by it’s cover, the synopsis was enough for me to dive into the story. What will this book have in store for it’s readers?
Wow! This book is really awesome! The storyline has a fast pace which fit the story perfectly. This book really is a pageturner and I could hardly put it down. I feel like the story has a lot of personality, but also really is a strong fantasy story.
Friendship is a really important theme in this book and really shows through the love of Aurelia for August and Esmee. In addition, there is room for development of the charachters and the mysteries surrouding the story. The storyline has an nice build and I loved getting to know Aurelia, Asher and Esmee.
Meant to Be Broken is a must-read for any fantasy lover. It has everything I look for in a great story: a touch of magic, a compelling romance, and a high-stakes adventure. The pacing was incredible—I finished it in one sitting! I can't wait to see where the story goes in the next book!
I went in completely blank into "Mend to Be Broken", since this was the first time I would read anything written by Iris De Vree. The blurb sounded promising though & I had heard some good things about her previous book series, so I was excited to dive into new territory!
It's very easy to sympathize with the female main character, Aurelia. In every. Possible. Way. Not only is she very likeable & down to earth, she also comes across as someone who is very strong-minded & determined. If anything, she's someone willing to go to every length to care for & protect her chosen family, since she lost her parents when she was little.
The magic system is very different from other fantasy books I've read so far. First of all, the different elemental kingdoms & what they each represent, plus the fact that the book holds a map in which they are depicted. The story doesn't elaborate on all of them, but I think that's a very smart move, since otherwise, the worldbuilding aspect would be too heavy, especially concerning the animadverto element when it comes to Aurelia's magical powers.
When it comes to the connection between Aurelia & Asher, you can cut the tension with a knife! I mean, what am I saying, 10 knives even! Their connection is so broody, mysterious & they're both trying not to give in to the other, which amuses me even more!
Right about when it seems like nothing in particular is about to happen, I was hit by a specific scene that blew everything up all at once. I was shaken to my core & even more hooked! As a result, every single sentence after this one kept me reading like a maniac, since I wanted to know what happened next as quickly as possible!
The ending nearly broke me, because it leaves us with a massive cliffhanger (Iris, I have a serious bone to pick with you!). There I was, gobsmacked, mouth wide open! Now I have to wait for the second instalment to know what happens next. The torture!
Lastly, I would like to focus on the aesthetic of the book. The hardcover is so stunning, with glittery details, special edges & let's not forget, the details in the interior & on the edges. The puffin's image is intentional, but you'll have to read the ending to know why! #sorrynotsorry
If you’re in the mood for a fantasy that pulls you in fast & leaves you desperate for more, this one might just be your next obsession. Broody tension, strong female leads, unique magic systems & stories that keep you hooked until the end, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!
I got it and it dragged me into this new world ... it held me hostage until I finished it and now I am hungry for the next book.... I really loved the story of Aurelia and August, and I cannot wait to find out more - I could relate, it was fun, a pretty quick read with its 337p, it definitely left you wanting more and a whole new world to discover.
I would recommend this to people who like romantasy or just a cute romance story with a side of magic... And the magic promises to get better and more in book 2 and maybe the answer to a question or 20 we have left
*** SPOILER ***The only remark I have is that E. deserved more development, a bit more explained, I felt like I missed part of that storyline
