Fire and Blood

Rate this book
Three centuries of absolute, cold discipline have made Izan Sulien the perfect weapon for the Cinder Flight. As an Enforcer who doesn't just burn his enemies but unmakes their very existence, he has successfully caged the predator within to maintain a fragile order in a city of fire. He is a creature of volcanic wrath who has never known a distraction—until he finds a witch in a blood-stained basement and realizes that the only thing more dangerous than the war he’s fighting is the primal urge to possess her.

Alerie Narayan is a master of escape and a student of scars, a Vireth witch who can sever the magical bonds that keep empires enslaved. She has spent a lifetime being a "useful tool" for cruel masters, but no cage has ever been as terrifying—or as intoxicating—as Izan’s obsidian stronghold. One "touch her and die" decree later, Alerie understands the terrifying math of her survival. She isn't Izan’s guest; she is his obsession—a predator who treats her scars as his personal injuries and her very breath as his property.

A tyrant’s trap is closing, and the only way out is a lethal alliance between a man who unmakes and a woman who severs. But in the airless heat of the stronghold, Izan has traded his badge for a brand. His protection is no longer a shield—it is a siege. As his iron restraint shatters into an all-consuming need, they must decide if they are each other's ultimate sanctuary or a fire that will leave only ash behind.

★★★★ — A Scorching Start to a Dark New Series
"A witch, a weapon, and a world on fire — Milly Taiden's boldest book yet."

Fire & Blood is Milly Taiden at her most ambitious and, honestly, I’m here for it. This is a departure from her usual shifter romance fare — darker, grittier, and with a world-building depth that surprised me in the best way.

Izan Sulien is a brooding, centuries-old Enforcer who has spent his entire existence being the perfect weapon — cold, controlled, and utterly terrifying. Then he finds Alerie, a Vireth witch with the rare ability to sever magical bonds, locked away in a blood-stained basement, and suddenly all that iron discipline starts to crack. The tension between them is electric. Taiden does a fantastic job of making you feel the push and pull — Alerie is no passive heroine. She’s a survivor, sharp and resourceful, and she doesn’t just accept her situation even when the odds are stacked against her.

The post-apocalyptic paranormal fantasy setting is richly imagined. The city of fire, the Cinder Flight, the politics of power and enslavement — it all feels layered and lived-in. I appreciated that Taiden committed to the darkness here rather than softening it. The morally gray characters are genuinely morally gray, not just edgy for the sake of it.

My only gripe — and the reason this is four stars rather than five — is that the pacing stumbles in the middle section. There are moments where the romance and the plot feel like they’re competing rather than complementing each other, and a few threads that felt underdeveloped by the end. I also wanted slightly more time in Alerie’s head; her inner world is fascinating, and I felt we only scratched the surface.

That said, the ending left me breathless and absolutely desperate for book two (Flame & Ash, coming soon — already pre-ordered). If you’re a fan of dark paranormal romance with a fantasy edge, possessive heroes, and heroines who hold their own, Fire & Blood is well worth your time.

Recommended for fans of: dark paranormal fantasy, enemies-to-lovers, morally gray characters, post-apocalyptic romance.

In all honesty, I wanted to enjoy this book and I am choosing to DNF it at 62% because the cons I have accumulated significantly outweigh what I enjoyed about this book.
The romance is too insta-love for my liking and the whole "he's a dragon and he's naturally possessive of what's his" seems like more a personality trait to the character more than an aspect of what he is. I don't whole heartedly agree with the claiming without consent because even if he just claims and possesses- if he loved her it would've been a conversation BEFORE he did it not after.
