Fast paced, brutal and thrilling
I was warned that it was violent at the start of the book. This isn't psychological thriller violence, this is pure violence by a psychopath. The novella keeps the writing tight and the pace moving.
The scenes are set clearly and I completely fell in love with Muddy, the horse.
Castle is Reacher sized, it is a birth story of the man he becomes when his world is destroyed and becomes about vengeance.
Definitely worth reading.

Hot Lead by Elwood Flynn is a taut, atmospheric entry into the Western, crime thriller genre, balancing grit with a surprisingly introspective edge. Flynn crafts a narrative that, on the surface, follows familiar territory within an old Western setting, violence, moral ambiguity, and the underbelly of urban life but distinguishes itself through its psychological depth and stylistic restraint.
The novel’s pacing is one of its strongest assets. Flynn avoids the trap of relentless action for its own sake; instead, he builds tension gradually, allowing scenes to breathe while maintaining an undercurrent of unease. When violence does erupt, it feels earned rather than gratuitous, amplifying its impact on the reader. This measured rhythm gives the story a noir sensibility, echoing classic Pulp Western & crime fiction while still feeling contemporary.
The protagonist, world-weary, believable and often caught between competing codes of loyalty serves as more than just a vehicle for the story. Flynn takes care to explore his internal conflicts, particularly the tension between survival and conscience. Supporting characters are similarly well-drawn, each contributing to the moral complexity of the narrative rather than existing as simple filler characters.
Stylistically, Flynn’s prose is lean but evocative. He favors sharp, economical sentences that mirror the harshness of the world he depicts, yet he occasionally shifts into more lyrical passages that reveal a deeper emotional register. This contrast enriches the reading experience, preventing the novel from becoming monotonous in tone.
Thematically, Hot Lead grapples with issues of power, corruption, and the cost of violence not just physically, but psychologically.
Elwood Flynn demonstrates a firm grasp of genre mechanics while pushing beyond them to explore deeper emotional and ethical terrain. It’s a work that will satisfy fans of old Western Pulp, Classic Western & noir and thrillers alike, particularly those who appreciate character-driven storytelling over spectacle.
For me Hot Lead lingered after the final page and left me wanting to read more.
In summary, Hot Lead is a compelling and thoughtfully executed Western crime novel which takes me back to the old Western Pulp novels and I really enjoyed it.
I will be buying a physical copy of this book to add to my bookshelf. 📚

I felt a little disappointed in this one. I was craving a western and everything about this screamed perfect. But in truth, I don't really think it can be classed as a western.
Most of the story happens in New York City, and the rest involves a summary of travelling from there to California. There's very little actual western content. I also saw that there were mentions of violence in other reviews and that is true. It is in fact quite disgusting in places and felt a little disconnected with the actual story.
The other issue I had was the sharpness of the ending. After everything, it was over very quickly and without much fanfare.
Overall while I like that this was probably the origin story for the man we would see in sequels, it left all the areas of what I was looking for unfulfilled and I probably won't continue with the series.
If you are looking for a bloody novella about revenge in the 1800s, it will probably fill that gap well. However if it's a pure western you are looking for, best to look elsewhere.

Just like the old pulp books it is short (40k words) but don't let that fool you it is a page turner, I looked forward to picking the book up everyday to ready more of Robin Castle and the world he lived in.
Castle is on the way to being a Western version of John Wick and Jack Reacher. Not a bad crowd to be around unless you're a bad guy (😉).

The murders were grizzly and the killer blatantly walked past the crowds. He had gall and guts he didn't deserve. He sickened me with the pleasure he derived from his kills. Castle wants revenge and
deserves it, but will the killer find a way to flee in public again??? The book does have a positive ending, but the killer gave much more pain and suffering than he ever received imo. I threw up after reading this, so I can't continue with this author, but it's a great read if you have the constitution for it. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest review.

Excellent! For any reader like me, the main selling points are:
* Short chapters (2-3 pages)
* Moves with pace
* Efficient scene-setting
* Evocative, primal character motivations
I loved this novel. Pocket-sized dime novel, self-propelled narrative. Just brilliant all over.
It’s worth noting there are some very disturbing scenes of violence though too, just in case that’s not your bag.

Wow. Just wow.
I planned to read just a few chapters.... Read the whole book!!! Couldn't put it down.
Now, I'm off for a hot shower to get rid of the dirt, blood and vengeance of the Wild West.

Excellent and well worth your time!
Its bloody, brutal and very well written. Everything I wanted from a western: realistic, violent and dangerous. I don't understand some people saying this should be nicer and not violent. Overall, a brilliant start to the series. More please...

A thoroughly entertaining pulpy western with an ultra-solid hero on the trail of a vicious psychopath who killed his wife and daughter. Looking forward to reading more in the series
