When Britney Taylor is assigned to serve as NHL superstar Jake McCoy’s personal assistant, she is anything but pleased. Although most women would be overjoyed at the chance to spend two months with the drop-dead gorgeous hockey player at his luxurious cabin in Stanley, Idaho, she isn’t one of them. Haunted by the demons of her past, she’s spent the past four years hiding behind a protective wall she’s built around herself. But now, all that she’s done to protect herself is suddenly in jeopardy.

When the owner of the Minnesota Blades, determined to re-sign Jake for the upcoming season, offers him the temporary use of his personal secretary to get him through the off-season, it might have seemed like the perfect solution. That is, if the woman in question was anyone other than Ms. Britney Taylor, aka The Ice Queen. Her cool, almost frigid demeanor has earned her the unflattering nickname within the organization and from what Jake is able to tell, it’s a fitting title. Unfortunately, however, desperate times call for desperate measures.

What neither Britney nor Jake can anticipate, however, is what will happen once they arrive in Stanley. That a burgeoning friendship will slowly ignite into a passionate love affair that neither one of them ever saw coming.

As their time together draws to an end, Britney is faced with perhaps the most difficult decision of her life. To hold on to the man of her dreams and live the life she never thought possible, she will have to break free from the past and overcome the fears that threaten to crush her one shot at happiness. But can she…

Suddenly Jake, a man to whom everything in life has come easy, will have to fight for what he wants, the woman he loves, the woman he can’t imagine living without. But can he prove to her that he’s worth fighting for, or will her deeply-rooted fears destroy their chance at happily ever after…

I absolutely loved this book by Jennifer McNare. This was the first book that I have read by Jennifer and I wasn't disappointed. The storyline was great and had me from beginning to end. The opening of the book immediately grabbed my attention and never let go. The characters were solid and you couldn't help but fall in love with them. Loved that the author took their relationship slow and let their chemistry build. Looking forward to more books by Jennifer!!

I must admit that I had doubts about this book, but I actually really enjoyed it. If you're into a lot of sex scenes, you won't get that here. If you're into the guy being a d*uche, you won't get that here either. The H was actually extremely down to earth, even though he was famous. He didn't use women or treat them bad. He was just an all around good guy.The h was really likeable as well. She wasn't whiny or depressing. She was just trying to make it through a hard life.
It wasn't a fast love, there was a good amount of build up, so if you like insta-love, you won't get that here. But the attraction does begin soon.
Anyway, all around this was a thoroughly enjoyable read. I couldn't give it 5 stars, but I would certainly say 4-4.5.

I picked this one up for free from Amazon thinking it would be a hockey romance. It's not. The male lead is a hockey player, but there is no actual hokey. Despite that, I enjoyed this story and would read this author again.

This was a very well written contemporary romance novel that I was fortunate enough to pick-up this week as a freebie on Amazon. Britney is broken because of a tragic event that happened four years ago and out of fear she hides from the world with ugly clothes, glasses, hairstyle, and closed off personality. She is actually a beautiful person inside and out and Jake is lucky enough to discover this over the eight weeks they spend together. Britney gets to know Jake and as their time together goes on she slowly starts to put herself back together by showing all of her beauty and letting others in for the first time in four years. I would recommend this book to others!

Britney has been transformed by a horrific tragedy in her recent past. The only way she feels she can cope is by erecting a mousy, quiet exterior to keep people away. Jake is a hockey player under contract renegotiation for the team she works for. Much to Jake's dismay and Britney 's horror her boss offers up Britney as a P.A. for Jake over the summer. Jake discovers that Britney has a warmth incongruous with her Ice Queen rep and Britney discovers that Jake is a sweetly sexy guy. Well-written story, the trauma is handled well; not glossed over but not exploited either. A very satisfying read.

This had a really disturbing beginning - unexpected given the description of the book, which sounded like a cute assistant and NHL player fall in love story

had lots of cliches in it - hot girl "disguises" herself in glasses and frumpy clothes; hot girl's best friend is a sports phenom; last minute confusion over a girl that's just a friend - but I liked it anyway
I mean, how can you not like a story that uses the word, "discombobulating"? (seriously, I like that word, it's a fun word!)

I'd recommend it as a mostly easy, light, fun read (except for the disturbing scene at the beginning that does come up again later in the book, but not to the same degree as in the prologue)

Another great freebie contemporary. Though, if I had paid I would have been slightly disappointed. I guess it seemed a bit rushed and shallow on some parts - but that was because I knew Jake's point of view as well - I like first person for a bit more mystery and less all-knowingness. The fishing/touring bits were a little boring as well...

Good book otherwise - certainly entertained me for the afternoon.

Jake and Brittany are forced together by her boss Ian to get Jake to sign back with the Blades. What they both didn't expect was to fall in love. She was the ice princess and he was the hot hockey player but Jake slowly saw more to Brittany than he expected. This was a great story and a lovely epilogue to top it off. If you want to read a story with a girl who over comes a tragic past to fall in love with a hot guy then I recommend you give this book ago.

I thought this one sounded intriguing from the blurb. It surprised me and turned into a really good read. Britney's struggle to step out of her safety zone made for a fascinating character. I was really impressed by her strength.

I really liked Brittney, and the story was cute. I liked how the darker aspects were dealt with in the story also. It felt like it was missing something to really make it special. I would try something else by this author, but I probably won't read this again.

Loved it! Thoroughly enjoyed seeing Brittany find herself again. Loved the fact the jocks in the story were not jerks like we all assume, but rather caring and wholesome men. Bravo.

Well written story. Might have some trigger stuff for people because of backstory. But overall nice job. The ending could have been explored a little more.

A well written, and quite moving, hockey romance about a young woman with a terrifying past and the NHL star who helps her overcome her past.

Cliche, predictable plot. Dialogue was mundane and many times unnecessary. Quick, light read.

Very different from her historical novels, nonetheless it had me gripped from page 1.
