What do a cozy mystery star, an award-winning blogger and a library supervisor have in common? They are all cats... once homeless cast-offs that were living on the streets or in the wild. Cats that people ignored, or worse, abused. But at some point, fate stepped in and changed the lives of these three cats and nine others. Rescued: The Stories of 12 Cats, Through Their Eyes contains the true-life stories of these cats—but each one is told through the feline’s own point of view. Human authors might have made these stories too saccharine and sentimental, but when they are viewed through the cats’ own eyes, they become funny, tragic, earthy and inspiring. This collection was carefully compiled and edited by Janiss Garza, renowned author and columnist for CatChannel.com.
If you love to read books about cats AND you want to help cats, you have to get your hands on a copy of Rescued: The Stories of 12 Cats, Through Their Eyes. The anthology contains stories told from the perspective of 12 different cats and each cat's story helps a different rescue.
You may already know some of these cats and the authors of their stories. Many of them are active on social media. However, you might not know their background and how they came into their humans' lives.
Each story is unique and I definitely loved them all, but I had a couple of favorites. First was the story of Michael in Then Came Michael. Michael was a 19-year-old cat recalling his 12 years spent with his Mom. He tells his story from a sunny spot while watching the snow fall on a cold winter day. I fell in love with Michael in a heartbeat.
My other favorite was the story of Ryker. Full disclosure here, his Person is a good friend of mine. I never got the chance to meet Ryker-or his predecessor Caleb-in person. To be able to read about him in detail was a special treat.
Here is where you, the reader, comes in to help cats. The editor, Janiss Garza, is donating a third of the book's profits to the rescues chosen by the authors. So to recap, you buy the book, fall in love with the cats, and shelters get donations. What could be better than that?
I have not read a book in nearly 40 years that touched my heart so much as this, nor one that made me want to raise a wry smile and then reduce me to tears as this one has. The true accounts, as seen through the eyes of these 12 Rescue cats, and those that they have touched and brought great happiness to, show sides of our companions that is often ignored or maligned along with the acts of cruelty and thankfully great kindness that are shown to them. A book worthy to be read, shared enjoyed and understood by everyone, no matter the age. Please take the time to read....
I loved the idea of writing cats' stories through their eyes and voices. However, I was disappointed with the writing and editing. There were some glaring mistakes, like "playing a roll". The writing itself felt childish and a bit formulaic. It's a great idea for a book.....but not this one.
This book is a great read, its perfect for cat lovers everywhere. If you have a cat, have been owned by a cat or remember one from your childhood - one of them spoke with a voice like this. It is full of humour, wit and above all hope.
I laughed, I cried, I held my breath as my heart raced! Even though these are short stories, they brought out my emotions as if I were reading the latest NYTimes bestseller. I totally fell in love with each of these kitties. One thing that has stuck with me is the acronym S.A.V.E.D. A forever home is the hope of all shelter cats, but there are always cats that remain at no-kill shelters. Cats that have been rescued, & have made it to a no-kill shelter, still need to be S.A.V.E.D. They need us hoomans to Sponsor, Adopt, Volunteer, Educate, & Donate to these shelter animals! The more people that are aware of this, the better life will be for many more furry friends.
I absolutely loved this story. As both a cat lover and someone who has rescued numerous cats, this book really hit the spot. There were places that brought tears to my eyes (both happy and sad tears) but I also laughed out loud at times. I really enjoyed getting to know each of the cats here. This book definitely brings attention to adoption, rescuing, and TNR (Trap Neuter Return) all of which needs to be done more. There are so many homeless cats and we need to find them homes before we buy our feline companions. This book just recognizes that and in a totally unique way. I highly recommend this book and am eager to read the next volume.
My own rescued kitten rescued me! My neighbor and I saw that Moma cat had babies one of the kittens got into another neighbor's shed. He trapped her inside the shed without any food or water. It was over 100 ° so we insisted he give us the cat and he did. That was the beginning of a love story. Today Penelope Garcia lives with me. She flies first class, gets brushed twice a day, and is generally totally spoiled. I was in a terrible place and having her share her love with me lifted me up to a much better place.
Cats should be accepted as they are - there is so much personality wrapped up in those furry bodies, they are perfect the way they are. This book of collected stories, told from the point of view of the cats, reflects this in such a charming way. Poignantly accurate in how rescue and vet medicine works, very little empathy is needed to put yourself in the paws of the cats as they relate their stories to the reader. You’ll feel sad and happy at different times and together, but never frustrated or angry, as you read this book.
I loved the cats telling of their stories. As a senior after having cats and dogs since a child I kept thinking about adopting a cat. After reading this story I went on my town's Animal Control website and bingo. I found a cat that had a rough start and am now waiting to see if I will be her forever home.
Hard not to fall head over heels about the catacters, err characters in this book. Each story was very enjoyable and illuminating about the various animal organizations. I was exceptionally heartened by Harriet's story.
This was a gift to me. It’s not great literature but a collection of 12 rescue cats stories told from the cats perspective. A quick read for the cat lover.
I read this book to my mom with dementia, it kept her attention and improved our time together. The stories were entertaining from the cat view point but even more so they were heart touching from the human side. Each story was well written and at times eye opening. I would highly recommend this book.
