A wingless FMC, a brutal trial, and a crown prince who greets her by throwing her off a cliff, safe to say this book captivated me from the first page!
I ended up spending the entire day and a good part of the night devouring the nearly 700 pages.
Kira is wingless in a society where wings define status and worth, yet her success in the trials threatens the entire power structure. The worldbuilding around wings and flight is wonderfully detailed, and while there is no magic, there are plenty of beasts and brutal challenges.
Rynthian and Kira start firmly in enemies-to-lovers territory. Their attraction never feels like insta-love; they are fascinated by each other, but openly acknowledge that they barely know one another, which makes the tension and banter all the better. Add betrayals, twists, shifting power dynamics and lovable side characters, and the story moves at a relentless pace.
Minor logic hiccups or maybe editing slips were noticeable but never distracting.
I also dreaded a brutal cliffhanger toward the end, but while the story is clearly not over, the ending itself felt satisfying for the moment.
I was so lucky to receive this book as an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. I have to admit I was in a chokehold from the very first page due to the unique writing style and descriptive prose. I very quickly grew attached to the FMC Kira Skyborn (what a name!) and her fiercely protective and loyal best friend Loris. In a world where there is a strong and unfair divide between the impoverished wingless and the ruthless winged, an ascension trial is put into play, one where lives mean nothing to those in power. I was so immersed in the characters and their growth, the world building, the scenes of both beauty and violence, and the slow burn yearning between the FMC and MMC Ryn. The plot twists and turns, complex motivations of characters, and fast paced and highly descriptive trials, had me on the edge of my seat throughout. The outstanding theme of the book being never underestimate or discount the underdog as “wings are not what make us rise”.🥰
I can’t praise this book enough, it made me want to get to the end to see the outcome whilst also never wanting it to actually end! I can’t wait for the next instalment, please pick this book up, you will not regret it! 🥰 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I began Astaris: Ascension Trials not knowing what to expect, and I ended up really enjoying the story, especially the final reveal. I’m extremely excited to read Book 2. I love Ryn and Kira, and where things are heading. I was beyond surprised that a book with trials throughout would keep my attention, and I enjoyed the lore building around the political implications, the rebel uprisings, and the Kira history reveal out of nowhere. The book was romantic, but the romance never felt forced. It was a true slow burn that felt organic and fun. I loved the wing detail between our FMC and MMC, it felt very fated mates, a concept I love. I wonder if that’ll be stated in the next book, as it was kind of implied already.
That said, my main (and only real challenge tbh) with this book was the writing style in the first half (roughly the first 50–60%). Without the following stylistic choices, this would’ve for sure been a 5 star read for me, but they were so distracting I gave this a 4, almost a 3.5. In short, the stylistic crutch was how often I would notice the prose delve into using short, fragmented sentences and repeated phrasing. For example, instead of describing something directly or succinctly, we repeatedly saw, “the kind that…” used to possibly create drama or intensity. While this can powerful occasionally, it’s used so frequently that it actually pulled my attention away from the story. One example was, “Good stone. Honest stone. The kind that held if you asked it properly.” This phrasing was used at least 3x in a single chapter which made it stand out. Another example was, “More silence. The kind that stretched like scar tissue, uncomfortable and revealing.”
There is also a heavy reliance on metaphor heavy descriptions. Each can be atmospheric on its own but due to how often we saw these purple prose examples, it felt unnatural and distracting. These stylistic elements actually heavily reduced or disappeared in the latter half of the book and I felt a sense of relief. I began to enjoy the actual story far more, the pacing was great, and it didn’t feel like every description was trying to outdo the last one for a “mic drop” moment anymore. I want to see more subtlety so that readers can decide how to feel, and more direct descriptions.
Overall, this was a great read and I’m glad I stuck with it. I’m hoping the prose style and pacing in the last 40% of the book is retained in book 2, and I’m extremely excited to see what happens with our heirs next.
3.5 ⭐️ I didn’t get chance to just sit and binge this so it took longer to read than I’d have liked. This could have potentially effected my rating. Luckily Bradley’s writing is packed full of descriptions so I could picture each scene that vividly, I didn’t forget what was going on in the time it took me to pick this back up again. Honestly, I don’t know if I’d have found the descriptions too much if I had read the whole book in the span of a week.
Asteris is a creative world unlike any other I’ve read about so far. (Which I find very impressive considering the volume of fantasy and romantasy books available now!)
The FMC Kira is a stubborn, crafty character and very likeable. She collects injuries like pokemon but they aren’t forgotten, Bradley doesn’t magically cure her overnight and I liked that as it made the story more realistic. I’m 50/50 on Ryn… However, I would love for Loris to keep a more prominent side character role throughout the rest of the series, I think he and his relationship with Kira are great.
The trials were fun and fast paced, some spanned a couple of days and some were just an hour or so long. I felt that the mix kept the storyline interesting and also helped to hone in and focus on the important characters while also building background. Similar to this, Kira and Loris’ backgrounds were mentioned throughout, which helped add depth to them as we understood their history and connection.
I did notice that quite a few points in the story were repeated throughout scenes. I’m not sure if this was meant to reinforce a point but they were written so close together and repeated so often, I don’t think they were needed.
The ending was very satisfying and I’m looking forward to reading the next one!
I’ll admit it: I went into this book thinking, "Oh great, another 'trials' series. Get ready for a bunch of boring, predictable traps." I couldn’t have been more wrong. Within just a few pages, I realized this wasn't your average trope.
The trials in this book are brilliantly executed. Instead of feeling like filler or "traps for the sake of traps," they are well-conceived and organic to the plot. They push the story forward and reveal the true nature of the world and the characters involved.
The cast is what truly makes this story shine. Kira: A powerhouse protagonist. She is strong, self-assured, and fully aware of the dangers surrounding her. What I loved most was her mindset—she knows the stakes are high, but for her, giving up is simply not an option. Loris: The ultimate companion. He is a loyal friend and a steady rock Kira can lean on through every challenge. Ryn: The "grumpy prince" archetype done right. There is so much more simmering beneath his prickly exterior than meets the eye.
The love story has a natural, progressive development that feels earned rather than forced. But the heart of the book lies in its core message: a complex web of connections built on the simple yet powerful concept that humanity is more important than a pair of noble wings.
This book is an absolute blast from start to finish. I’m officially hooked and desperate for the next installment. Seriously, tell me when the sequels are coming out because I need them now!
⭐️⭐️⭐️Not enough stars possible ⭐️⭐️⭐️ " You became the thing I couldn't afford to lose. Everything else is negotiable. " " So decent odds then. Since everyone else is definitely stupid. " 'I don't have a word for what this is. But it feels like the thing people write songs about. The thing that ruins kingdoms. " 💗
I literally have no words. This book was incredible!! I devoured 600 pages in less than two days, and I regret nothing!! Take Hunger Games, pump it up on steroids, but make it SPICER with wings!! Kira is wingless in a world that would consider you invisible at best or better off dead at worst for not having wings. Determined to make a difference, Kira and her best Loris enter the brutal Ascension Trials - a chance for wealth, nobility, and to make a difference. Standing in their way, Prince Rynthian and his circle. The trials in this book were insane and I loved it. Imagine having to go through some Basgiath/ 4th Wing like trials and surviving only to get to one called "The Culling." Happy Hunger Games, people!! Kira and our MMC have some serious tension!! Halfway through the book, I'm silently screaming at them. " Kiss already." Then we get our MMC's POV and swoon. Please hurry with book 2!!! Thank you for choosing me to be an ARC Reader.
A fast paced book full of action, romance, politics and trials. The trials (lasted from start to finish) were deadly especially for our FMC Kira who is the only wingless participant.
Kira manages to ignite the fire of resistance in the people by succeeding in the challenges well. The romance was wonderfully tingly and the banter worked between the main couple as well as the other characters.
The story hooked me right from the start and I can see why it is recommended for both the Fourth Wing and Hunger Games readership.
Thanks to author Frances Bradley and Netgalley for the advanced reader copy!
If I had the ability to go beyond a 5-star rating, I would, as this book deserves more than 5. This Romantasy book is a breath of fresh air amongst the many Romantasy books I’ve read. To better explain, I have been looking for a series that allowed me to immerse myself with each character and feel each moment, like I did when going through Throne of Glass. The storyline has Hunger Games’ vibes with a twist of fae x10000000. There were moments I also felt like this had a touch of Throne of Glass vibes, mainly surrounding Kira, FMC. The writing impeccable. The world building - fantastic. The character developments for each character a masterpiece. The plot beyond amazing. The trials - absolutely brutal and had me on the edge of my seat. Honestly, I would’ve devoured this book within 24 hours, if I wasn’t resting from being extremely under the weather. France’s Bradley, the author, I applaud you and thank you for this ARC. It has been the highlight of my 2026 reads.
Welcome to the world of Astaris, where wings mattered and the wingless were beneath the lowest of the lows. Kira, our wingless FMC, fighting for her life alongside her best friend, Loris, in the Ascension Trials. The purpose to repay a family’s debt and to prove groundlings are people also and have the capability to do as much, if not more, than the winged. Prince Ryn, our winged MMC, going through the trials to prove his worth to the King and all the noble families, especially as heir to the throne. Trained since basically birth, Ryn is dashingly handsome, intelligent, brutal, and beyond lethal - surrounded by his circle, each individual a “useful tool” to gain what he wants and hopefully win the trials. The trials are brutal, meant to break you or kill you. As one advances, each trial becomes more complex than the last. When their paths, the world will change. Loyalties challenged. Decisions questioned. Secrets discovered. In the end it comes down to survival. What would you do to survive?
Will unsuspecting alliances form? Will there be a betrayal? Who will survive the trials and at what cost? Who will win? Will secrets make or break our characters? If you want to know, read read read this book!
Spice Level: 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️
Parts I highlighted in no particular order - Quotes: ‘“Look around you, groundling. Look at their faces. They want blood. His Highness wants to see what you’re made of.”’
“I wanted to ruin him. I wanted him to forget every other person who’d ever touched him.”
“Worth it. Every risk. Every calculation I’d abandoned. Worth it.”
“I wanted to rewrite what his skin remembered, replace the arithmetic of not good enough with something that had nothing to do with earning and everything to do with being wanted exactly as he was.”
“Not because I was bound to him by blood or politics. But because I chose him. Because whatever we were building together was worth protecting.”
Absolutely amazing book! Started slow, but only due to incredible world building! Once I got going I was completely hooked, I laughed, I gasped, I squealed! Can not recommend this book highly enough. I was lucky enough to be chosen for this ARC read, I will be buying it and I am already so excited for book 2!!
I received Astaria as an advanced reader copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This book had me invested from the get go. Hunger Games for adults with a great slow burn full of tension and some added spice. I enjoyed how the relationship between the underdog FMC and royal MMC evolved from enemies to lovers, how side characters supported the main characters. every single one of them was well defined and believable, real within my mind. The story was absolutely action packed from start to finish and flowed incredibly well throughout. I would've happily skived off work and hidden myself away from the world to read, savour and love this book. My only real complaint is that it's now over and I have to wait for the next book because I honestly didn't want it to end.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ If you read anything else this year, let it be this action-packed, harrowing, unputdownable, flawless debut novel!!!
"Wings are not what make us rise." This is the central theme of Astaris: The Ascension Trials and the journey of the main female character Kira, a wingless woman born into a society of ruthless winged factions that was built on the backs of the wingless and impoverished.
In Astaris, author Frances Bradley has created an immersive world, a city literally built into the sky amidst waterfalls and twin suns - a place where ones ability to fly often makes the difference between life or death.
Kira is a brave and sometimes foolishly daring FMC, with a mysterious, unusual jungle upbringing. The reader is immediately introduced to Kira's particular brand of resilience at page one as she fights for a place of respect among cruel winged nobles, in trials designed to kill her kind.
And what trials they are! From jungle quests to kill the worst monster you can find and gladiator-style hand-to-hand combat, to underwater cave races against time (talk about edge of your seat!) and gauntlets floating in the sky - each one is brutal, inventive and will have you gasping out loud!
Kira is joined by her faithful childhood friend Loris and a cast of other memorable characters both cruel and calculating, including the lethal, beautiful and dark prince Ryn. You might think their immediate natural attraction is foreshadowing an insta-love kinda romance but NO - just wait! This romance builds slowly beyond initial attraction to a tantalizing, yearning slow-burn forbidden love that will leave you breathless and wishing for more, more, MORE! 🥵
Kira becomes the unsuspecting (and somewhat unwilling, at first) symbol of the growing underground revolution, and how this part of her journey unfolds amidst her survival of both the trials and palace politics is a testament to Bradley's ingenuity and depth as a storyteller.
This story had me chewing my nails with anxiety at each turn of the page, shaking my head at the utter beauty of some of the most powerful intimacy scenes I've ever read, highlighting enough deep quotes to fill a novella, and almost crying at the end over how the revolution gains its own wings.
Please read this wonderful book! I can't fathom how it couldn't possibly be the next big thing!
Thank you to the author for sharing an advanced reader copy of this story with me; my review is voluntary and my honest opinion.
Astaris: Ascension Trials (book 1) Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 🌶️🌶️.5 Vibes: Hunger Games; Serpent and the Wings of Night Tropes ✅ Strong, brave FMC ✅ Controlled, lethal MMC ✅ Enemies to allies ✅ Forbidden love ✅ Winged vs wingless ✅ Prestige determined by wing color ✅ Underground revolution ✅ Deadly trials ✅ Hidden identity
✍🏼 [Excerpt] He was beautiful and lethal and possibly the worst decision I could make. I kept making it anyway.
[Excerpt] It wasn't revolution that I wanted. What I wanted was slower, harder, less satisfying to those who craved immediate justice. I wanted systems that bent rather than broke. Change that outlasted the people who made it.
[Quote] "I've never wanted anything the way I want you. And it's not just want anymore. It hasn't been for a while. I don't have a word for what it is. But it feels like the thing people write songs about. The thing that ruins kingdoms. The thing I'd let ruin me, if it meant keeping you."
[Excerpt] Tomorrow, I'd be sensible again. Tomorrow, I'd remember all the reasons this was complicated and dangerous and probably doomed. Tonight, I was going to sleep in his arms and pretend the world outside this room didn't exist.
[Quote] "Maybe 'impossible' is just a word for things we haven't properly wanted yet."

Immersive worldbuilding, evocative prose, and unforgettable characters!
Frances Bradley's first book, Astaris: The Ascension Trials is a high-calibre fantasy debut that has raised the bar for the Fantasy Romance genre.
In a Kingdom driven by an unfair class system, and built upon the backs of the proletarian masses, the Ascension Trials presents a unique opportunity to even the playing field. The lower classes enter for the chance to become nobility. The nobility enter to prove their standing at the top.
Kira is determined to rise to the challenge, even though she is at a severe disadvantage; the city of Astaris, and the trials, are made for people with wings, and she has none.
The trials are dangerous and deadly (creatively written and unique to the world), filled with nightmarish mystical creatures, physical/mental & political tasks, and manipulative two-faced competitors. But the political climate is just as dangerous and deadly, with years of oppression and unrest building to a powder keg. Kira, and best friend (and trial partner) Loris, find themselves fighting battles on multiple fronts
To survive it all, alliances must be forged, but with betrayal not only sanctioned but encouraged, how can anyone be trusted?
Her presence is a threat to the status of the trials - to what it takes to succeed and where people belong- and the displeasure of the crown is manifested in the Prince himself. Displeasure, intrigue, and longing. For as much as he taunts Kira with his own deadly threats, Prince Ryn also can't seem to stay away from her.
Kira is strong and resilient. Skilled in ways the wings don't understand. Her resolve only falters under the Prince's attentive eye. She disrupts every plan he has for the throne; He threatens the walls she has built up for protection. They could save their kingdom or tear it apart and no one is willing to bet on the outcome.
Filled to the brim with interesting supporting characters and an exciting new fantasy world. Frances Bradley holds you tightly in the visceral grasp of her writing with a myriad of tension points keeping you on the edge of your seat. Loyalty, betrayal, alliances, attractions. You will be swept into the Ascension Trials and will not willingly put this book down until you have seen it through.
TROPES: - Strong outcast FMC - stubborn to her detriment at times (Thank you for giving us realistic character flaws) - Controlled/disciplined MMC - he keeps it all hidden beneath the Prince mask (but she is alarmingly disarming) - Dangerous/Deadly Trials - Unfair class system/political manipulation/social unrest (Kingdom) - Reluctant Hero - Unlikely allies - Enemies to lovers - Slow-burn tension
TRIGGER WARNINGS: - All that accompanies dangerous and deadly trials. - Brutal hand-to-hand combat & extensive battles with both humans and creatures - all of which - requiring healing and recovery (Not overtly graphic) - Frequent death (referred to) and near-death experiences (experienced by the FMC) - Class system bigotry/injustice/bullying - Mystical creatures that may very well terrify you (I cannot tell you more without spoilers)
SPICE: - The spice in this book is presented respectfully but for those who prefer a closed door read, these parts (within 2x chapters) are easily skipped without losing depth of connection and plot.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Keep an eye on this author for she is expected to do great things!
I received an advanced reading copy from the author, this is my honest review:
From first page, I was hooked. The authors tone and writing style really resonated with me.The deeper you venture, the better it gets. I wanted to shirk every responsibility I had to read one more page! It is a harsh competition, and brutal world with extreme classism. It has elements of darkness, but is well balanced by the author. Her brilliant use of well placed humor tempers the weight of the storyline beautifully.
This FMC is everything you want: strong, gritty, honest, ruthless and resilient, all while still maintaining an empathetic heart. Instead of being diminished by her lower class designation, she uses it to her advantage, letting people underestimate her while sharpening all of her edges to a deadly point. I loved her internal banter with herself, and the way she sees and assesses the world around her. She trusts her instincts and intuition, even while consciously making some choices that she knows are reckless, which she will always admit. Her sidekick, Loris, is the golden retriever we all love in the supportive best friend.
And OMG, don't get me started on the yearning and push and pull of the romance! The author creates the ultimate forbidden romance, and reinvents the meaning of slow burn, its more of a constant sizzle if you ask me. I loved the layered intricacies weaved into the relationship between Kira & Ryn. The MMC is complicated and infuriating and annoyingly perfect. He is very hard to predict and understand. The duality the writer creates in his character is incredible. This feels so much more realistic than other romanticies I've read, because despite the strong pull they feel, they recognize the futility of giving into it, the societal expectations (or rather, limitations) rest too heavily on their shoulders. They are an impossibility, and yet, spark of hope is kept alive between them through the smallest moments of intimacy. She makes you feel like you're getting behind closed doors action, before they have even kissed! It's quite magical, I must say. The touching of hands, stolen glances, their reactions to each other, almost kisses and close proximity tease in the most delicious way.
Highly recommend this book! Definitely gives some hunger games vibes, but it own unique story. A very gratifying ending, that leaves you salivating for the next book (but not a cliff hanger)!
My singular critique is that I found the writing to occassionally be repitious in nature. Re-stating essentially the same thing in a slightly different way, and everyone saying things "rougher than intended". This did not compromise my experience, however, making it a minor annoyance.
I’ll start off by saying I have NEVER read a book like this before. It feels like it has Fourth Wing, Hunger Games and Acotar vibes - YET it’s firmly in its own lane.
At the beginning of the book I did have some struggles with the world building BUT i’m really putting that down to being a newer fantasy reader.
Although I was slow reading the beginning of the book, the world building was written very well. It was detailed, it was thought out and I felt like I was truly in Astaris. I enjoyed the detail on the different wing types and flight patterns too!
With that being said, it picks up quickly and you really find yourself getting stuck in. If I wasn’t ill this last week I would have finished it within 24hrs.
The FMC Kira Skyborn lives in Astaris, a vertical city where wings determine everything: power, status and whether you live or die.
This city isn’t built for people like her - shes wingless, a groundling, but what she does have is a hunters instinct, a talent for reading people and the kind of stubborness that gets mistaken for a death wish.
We meet Prince Rynthian early on and he is everything Kira absolutely hates and this is where we land firmly in enemies to lovers territory. He’s cold, untouchable because of his inner circle and he’s an apex predator in a place thatbreputation is build on blood.
Kira wants to enter the Ascension Trials which is a brutal competition designed to cull the weak and crown the worthy. But her success in the trials will threaten the entire power structure.
Now let me tell you this. I ate this book up.
What I didn’t expect in this book was for there to be a twist. A twist that had me in a chokehold that hard I had to stop reading before the scene even finished playing out because of a sudden moment where I realised what was happening, or what was about to happen. When I went back to finish that scene I just knew this was going to be a powerful and pivotal moment to the story.
If you’re looking for magic you won’t find it here but there are plenty of beasts and challenges along the way for the characters.
And speaking of chracters, the character developments in this book were done amazingly. We also get to meet some pretty great side characters, Loris being a firm favourite and I enjoyed learning about all their different motivations, alliances and watching their growth throughout the story.
Spice? Yes we have spice. But it’s a slow burn with lots of yearning before we arrive at the licky licky.
By the time I got to the end of this book once the trials had ended I needed more. Like now. Like yesterday.
“-you ruined everything. All my plans. All my careful strategies. You walked into my life and set fire to it all.”
First off, thank you to the author - for writing this and for the arc. This book was honestly amazing - I was unsure of exactly what it was I was getting myself into - but I was completely blown away by the end. First person is not my usual cup of tea but I read through it anyway and I am glad that I did (and I’ll definitely be sticking around for the rest of the series). Kira Skyborn is a wingless young woman in a society of winged individuals - a society that isn’t built for her and other outlanders and lowborns. She’s brave and reckless with a lot of heart - and lethal climbing skills - skills that are immediately noticed by the ever-so-perfect prince Rynthian Malachar. The other characters are just as great, though also just as terrifying and reckless at times. Loris, Tarian, and Echo are definitely some of my favorites. Slowburn enemies to lovers type books are my favorite - I really enjoyed the connection that Kira and Ryn had and I appreciated it wasn’t an insta love situation. The trials in this book were also very unique and well thought out. There were so many trials the characters had to go through and I was on the edge of my seat throughout every single one. Due to this, I was able to finish this book in just 5 days despite working for most of those days. I was truly hooked. The worldbuilding, however, was a little overwhelming at first, I almost thought I would never remember all the names or places, but I eventually did. It felt very natural by a few chapters in and the world itself was really beautiful. It was very detailed and I was able to picture it, which made reading about the aforementioned trials even more thrilling. The writing in this book was great, I personally love details and the author delivered. The plot of this book was phenomenal. I was rooting for Kira the whole time and I really loved that the book wasn’t just focused on the romance aspect - there were a lot of greater lessons throughout. There are definite themes of class division and power throughout this book, making it feel all the more realistic. It was heartwarming to see Kira work hard and fight against the stereotypes barriers that really tried to push her down. She was constantly defying the odds and proving herself more than worthy. Also noteworthy was the amount of twists, turns, and betrayals throughout the book that kept me going. It was grim and brutal at times, but that made it all the more fun (and scary). It really feels as though this book is for the odd one out, the one who feels like there is no place for them. I truly enjoyed reading this, and I would say that this book is definitely a must read!
From page one I was hooked. We are thrown straight into the chaos and it never lets up. The pacing is insanely good—constant action, constant tension, and even the quieter moments still feel charged. It’s one of those books where you keep saying “just one more chapter” and suddenly it’s 2am.
The trials were a huge standout for me. They felt brutal, high-stakes, and actually mattered to the story instead of just being there for vibes. Every round raised the tension, and with Kira being the only wingless competitor in a world where wings = power, it made everything feel that much more intense. Very survival-game energy in the best way.
The worldbuilding was also super immersive. I loved how the whole hierarchy around wings was handled. It was clear, impactful, and didn’t need a ton of over-explaining to hit. You really feel how stacked the odds are against Kira, which made every small win so satisfying.
Kira herself is such a strong FMC. She is exactly the kind of main character I root for—strong, resilient, determined, and absolutely refuses to back down even when everything is stacked against her. And the dynamic with Ryn?? So good. It leans into that enemies-to-lovers tension but keeps it slow-burn and grounded, which made it way more compelling than insta-love.
I also loved the underlying thread of rebellion running through everything. Kira just existing—and succeeding—in a system that was never built for her starts to shift things, and you can feel that pressure building the entire time.
I did notice a couple small moments where things felt a bit repetitive, but since I read an ARC, I’m guessing that’ll be cleaned up in the final version. It didn’t take away from the experience at all!
Overall, this was such an addictive, high-stakes fantasy that completely hooked me. If you love high-stakes trials, tension, slow-burn romance, and a fierce, underdog FMC who refuses to stay invisible, this one is 100% worth picking up. I already need the next one!
Thank you to Frances Bradley and NetGalley for the ARC.
Astaris: Ascension Trials hooked me from the very beginning! The entire premise is different and unique in the best of ways.
I am a sucker for good world building in any fantasy novel. I want to know literally everything in detail and the lore behind it. And France's Bradley delivers on that! A vertical city, society rankings built on the kind of wings a person has, and a FMC who is wingless, joining the cities deadly trials to prove she matters, wings or not.
Kira Skyborn is a tough as nails character. She's witty, intelligent, and never quits. I thoroughly enjoyed her character and the struggles she's dealt with her entire life. The true grit she has in her soul to overcome a place that is specifically designed to tear her down and see her fall. Her character growth is also incredible and I loved seeing how she slowly opened herself up to vulnerability with the prince, our MMC.
Rynthian Malachar is the crown prince of Astaris. He's brutal, unforgiving, and always willing to play the political game. There are layers to him for sure! I felt like as the story progressed we see more and more of who he truly is, and what he stands for. For me Ryn's character truly came alive about half way through the trials. I loved seeing him crack open for Kira eventually.
For me there was a bit too much repetition in the first 50% with certain phrases or information that we already learned, but with that, by the end half of the book the flow felt really good!
If you love fantasy with dystopian elements and deadly trials, found family aspects, then this book will be perfect for you!
This is an ARC review I am leaving voluntarily and all thoughts are my own. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
First, thank you for gifting me an arc to read to the author and her team! It was my privilege to be selected and to read and enjoy this book!
Astaris, is a world, a story that is a mix of feelings, reminding me of reading things like hunger games, acotar, from blood and ash! The author does a great job building a world you can visualize and imagine! A world full of strong characters and story line combined! The story follows that of a female lead, Kira, through challenges and obstacles, that has the “nobles” believing and setting her up for failure! She continues to defy the odds against her and builds friendships, achievements and succeeds in so much more! She grew up through struggles and challenges and now faces the world to prove that everyone is capable of achieving so much! The story drew me in, kept my attention, had me wanting more! Her challenges began with her biggest obstacle the royal prince, Ryn, who we discover isn’t all that we see! This story had me holding my breath at moments, shocked and in awe, and had my heart feeling! You felt what Kira felt, you cheered and cried with her! This book is the beginning of a world, a story that is worth the time to read! The author, Frances Bradley, did an amazing job, reminding us throughout the book, that less is actually more! That you don’t need the world given to you, the world is yours for the taking! Some discredits, there were times the information was repetitive in the beginning of the book. If you enjoyed the books mentioned above, even just one of them, take a moment and read Astaris: Ascension Trials! Join a world of imaginable things!
I was fortunate enough to read this book as an ARC. It is breathtaking.
The character development - their complexities, instincts and decision-making - are top notch and create a breadth of characters which combine effortlessly to create relationships that you yearn to keep learning about. The same is true of the world-building - I've never read a book where I can see the city, jungle and environments so clearly. The descriptive language and action create a tension that left me holding my breath until I turned the page.
The trials are original and are a twist on the typical scenarios, with the winged competitors having the advantage over FMC Kira. The unique, deadly creatures each offer their own threats which add further depth.
I was amazed by how well-balanced the action of the trials is set against the political scenario, which just builds & builds throughout.
And then, there is the romantic tension between Kira and Ryn (FMC / MMC) which actually feels refreshingly realistic, despite this being a fantasy.
The support characters are equally fascinating - Tarian, Loris, Echo etc all have depth which I can't wait to learn more about.
The author has committed to releasing the full 4-book series in circa 12 months. I cannot wait for book 2 which is due out in May/June.
I was absolutely blown away with this book and it was an easy 5 star read for me. I am actually beyond impressed that this is actually her debut. This book is very long but extremely bingeable, I feel like I could read this story continuously!
I was hooked from the very first page which was full of fast paced action. We follow our FMC and fearless woman who is a total BADASS, holds herself and never backs down from a fight. I love it how strong she is and how she proves everyone wrong.
Kira lives in a world where wings equal power. She is wingless amongst the winged, they all expect her to fail and all look down on her from the start of the competitions. There's a broody prince at the start that wants to see her fail but there's something simmering between them. Can they both hide the obvious attraction and ignore the pull the pulling them together? The yearning was strong from the long looks to the slight touches and when it clicked into place it was perfect. True enemies to lovers!
I also really liked the relationships with side characters, particularly Kira and Loris and I loved that they had this history and that mean Kira felt safe when all these stressful trials were taking place.
With that being said, I enjoyed how the trials were written, brutal and the detailing was out of this world.
Overall, an amazing book and has left me wanting more. I can't wait for book 2.
Thank you to NetGalley and Frances Bradley for a copy of this book for an honest review.
What a debut! We have trials from the beginning to end of this book- it is super action packed!
Astaris: Ascension Trials is about a wingless girl navigating a world where wings determine status. She competes in a brutal, deadly competition (the Ascension Trials) against elite winged rivals, forcing her to try and survive deadly challenges while navigating feelings for our MMC.
“She was born without wings in a world built on flight.”
We have forbidden love, combat, secrets, yearning, politics, and of course high stake trials.
In chapter 21 we get the MMC’s POV- those are always my favorite chapters. I love knowing what’s going on in his head too.
This book is available now and I am so pleased to tell you the next book is coming out NEXT MONTH and the third book is scheduled to come out this fall with the fourth book coming out early next year?!?! I’ve never seen a series released this quickly and I am here for it!!
Some small notes- it’s little repetitive in the beginning, regarding how intriguing she was and such. Would’ve loved a bit more into our FMC’s background and past. That’s it.
I had fun reading this and thank you again for the copy!
First, let me just say that this book had me hooked from the get go. It began with action and the action just kept going, and going, and going. I just want more.
So for the world building/ the trials: the way the action is in the trials keeps you on the edge of your seat wanting to keep reading. The descriptions that were used and the way things were explained made the entire picture pop into my mind as I read the story.
The Characters: Oh my goodness, I picture them in my mind and the wings in my minds eye are beautiful. They were written about in a way that you see the colors, texture and size so amazingly written.
Story line and cliff hanger: The story line is explained in a way that pulls you in and drags you along, wanting to call out of work just to read more. The cliff hanger at the end has me dedicated to impatiently wait for the next ones to be released.
The Author: Frances Bradley; Well this is the first book of hers I have ever reads and it was and ARC. I am already a fan. I love your love for fantasy writing and am definitely going to be getting more of you works of art.
Being wingless in a world of wings means being lesser in the eyes of many. When Kira and her best friend Loris enter the "The Ascension Trials" determined to improve their circumstances and the circumstances of their families, but the trials are not meant for the wingless. As Kira and Loris navigate around the fact she is wingless and come up with solutions that will aid them (Think harness and giddy-up Loris) also the fact that she and loris both come from a more hunter gatherer type village, where what you kill depends on whether you eat or not, and if you're the hunter, hunted or the prey. But the trials themselves are not the only obstacles, Prince Rynthian or Ryn as he's known to some, is brutal, and ruthless in his determination. And he wants Kira gone. But Kira begins to see the man beneath the ruthless image Ryn portrays to everyone else, and the way his wings seem to only pulse for her. This book is full of trials, intrigue, forbidden love, friendship and revolution and the determination for a better future. Read this book it was a fast- paced adrenaline fueled read. Looking forward to book 2 Rising Heirs.
I swear if I keep starting series that aren't finished I'm going to lose my ever loving mind 😭😭😭😭 Im so dang proud of Kira and she's not even real!!!! Everything she fought for, everything she suffered, for that ending. Ugh!!! My girl better be happy in the next book. Love love her!!! She's so strong and so amazing.
But as great as she is, I also have to mention how great Ryn and Loris are. Loris with his friendship to Kira and Ryn fighting for his life against his feelings for her. Ryn is hilarious. Constantly fighting how he feels and getting so frustrated. There were a lot of betrayals here but by the end, I couldnt be angry. What he was trying to accomplish, I understand. I understand his fear especially when Kira threw a wrench into his plans.
The main characters were amazing but I love the background characters. Little pieces being moved around the chess bored. The king got the biggest check mate and I was here for it. There is so much I need to know. But I also don't want to read book 2 because I'm scared of what happens next. Everything about this book was perfect. Excellent writing and perfect timing
I loved these characters! Kira is fantastic, never giving up no matter what is thrown at her, doing things her way. I really enjoyed the world building in this story, the idea of the class structures and the differences in the lives of those with wings and those without was well done. The plot moved at a good pace keeping me engaged throughout. I struggled a little with the writing style (remember this is subjective and what one person struggles with, another will love). I found the ways things were overexplained/over described, and explained/described more than once, often in threes, was quite distracting for me. I generally prefer books that the leave the reader to figure out the things that don't really need explaining, especially if it was already explained earlier in the book. There were also a number of inconsistencies/discrepancies throughout the book (mostly in the fist half) that felt more a results of edits rather than poor plotting. If these are things that don't generally bother you then this is a great book. If not for the things I mentioned above this would have been a near 5⭐ read for me. I'm looking forwards to the next book.
I devoured this book WAY too fast for its size and now I need more immediately 🔥
A wingless girl in a society that literally worships wings?? Deadly trials where everyone wants her eliminated?? And a cold, morally grey prince who absolutely cannot stand her… except he keeps showing up anyway??
Kira is the ultimate underdog—you root for her from the very first page. The tension during the trials had me stressed in the best possible way. Even at the bottom of the social ladder, she holds her own with cleverness, resilience, and a strength that completely throws the elites off balance.
And the romance??? Slow-burn enemies-to-lovers DONE RIGHT. The banter. The constant run-ins. The lingering looks. The way they keep gravitating toward each other despite everything telling them not to… I am unwell. If you love rich world-building, high-stakes competition, fierce heroines, and romance that starts as a simmer before going full 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥… read this immediately.
This needs to be in every book shops and I need special editions
A book that finally got me out of my reading slump - I’m telling you, this one is special.🤩🤩
First of all, WOW. I still think it’s criminal that almost no one seems to know about this book. Every chapter is either a trial or preparation for one, so the tension never leaves and keeps you completely invested.
The female main character is absolutely amazing-smart, precise, calculating, strategic, and always finding a way out of impossible situations. You simply can’t help but love her. As for the male lead, he’s definitely the one who falls first and falls harder. Even though he can be harsh with his words, he’s always there for the FMC and does everything he can to protect her.
The fantasy world, winged characters, and the broken system built around the trials make the story incredibly engaging. I couldn’t wait to see how the FMC would overcome each challenge thrown her way.
If you’re looking for a strong and intelligent FMC, high-stakes trials, romance, and characters with wings, you should definitely give this book a try.🔥🪽💕
Wow what can i say this is a solid 4⭐️ read! I did read this as an arc!
At first i did struggle with the first few chapters of the book, because of the amount of detailed world building, descriptions of whos who, their wings and what they mean etc but as i read on im pleased the author did this!
This is a unique fantasy book that ive read, there is backstabbing literally and figuratively, right from the start dont trust no one!
The hidden secrets that come out, the plot twist that plots and twists and keeps you thinking, no one is safe in the deadly trials i defiantly get next level hunger game vibes from these trails and games!
The enemies to lovers to….. between Ryn and Kira, the tension; the guessing if they will or not and when they do 🫦 The friendships that are made with everyone including the side characters, the ones who survive im so pleased!
This book was sooooo good. It takes familiar tropes and twists them just enough that you don't feel you know exactly what is coming. The side characters had their own growth and character arcs which I love.
The novel drops you right into the trials and doesn't let you go. The exhaustion and cost of the trials carries true throughout the novel and it lends believability to this fantasy story.
I've never read a book with winged characters but I have a feeling it will be hard to beat this one. The wings do not feel superfluous and are integral to the plot. Characters have realistic consequences around their wings.
This book truly pulled me in and I got so mad and so happy throughout and I can't wait to read more.
