This book hit hard at the beginning and really showed the frightening experiences of 9-11 with an up close and personal style. It really shook up my emotions and remembrances. Things seemed a bit odd and unfitting toward the end, but overall I really enjoyed this book and the perspective it showcased.

In 2001 I worked and lived in Manhattan and on 9/11 I personally witnessed the destruction of the World Trade Center and the aftermath in Lower Manhattan. Because of or despite this, I've never really been interested in artistic responses to 9/11, other than the controversies over the various memorials. The one exception is the overlooked graphic novel, "Tribeca Sunset" by Henrik Rehr.

Originally published as the 4-issue comic book "Tuesday", Rehr addressed the events from his perspective as an eyewitness and the aftermath in two stories. The first story is Rehr's recollection of the day and it's impact on him, his family and his neighbors in Tribeca. The second story is an artistic take on the effect the event had on a group of friends, examining their lives a year later.
I was taken with both stories and with Rehr's understated, European-style graphics.

I understand that others prefer the non-fiction of the first story, the eyewitness account, and dismiss the second, fictionalized take. I feel they take the 2nd story too lightly- 9/11 was one day, a long one, and the shadow that day cast over New York City was permanent for many of us who lived through it. I'm not one for maudlin self-pity or sentimental tributes (much), and I found Rehr's fictionalized take on the lingering effects of 9/11 on his group of friends to be more personal for me.

Perhaps because Rehr is a Dane he takes a more oblique, less emotive view of what remains an emotionally devastating event for his characters. It is a drama of small moments and understated expressions and I found it to be very moving and remains a touchstone for my memories of my time in Manhattan. Highly recommended.

Tribeca Sunset was an amazing graphic novel I was captivated throughout the entire book. Though I was just a baby when 9/11 took place, this book allowed me to view it from the standpoint of those who were more greatly affected by the tragedy. It allowed me to see the real long lasting impact the attack had on the United States and specifically citizens of New York City.

The book told a story of a family that was greatly impacted by the terrorist attack. It told us how the aftermath destroyed the apartment complex they lived in and how they struggled to find a place to live for a while and how hard it was on the kids. The book expressed how the attack will never be forgotten, and how it not only impacted the city or state but the whole country.

I recommend this book to people of all ages specifically to those who think the attack had nothing to see to them and to all Americans to remember the day pride was stolen from us.

The first section (through p 67 or so? Need to check book again) was interesting, compelling, moving - but not quite worthy of the comparison (on front cover) to Maus.

The rest fell flat. The digression into the artist's was not interesting to me at all, and pulled my overall rating down. What was the point of it? It wasn't clear when it took place, wasn't clear if the characters were real, and they weren't the least bit likeable. I'd rather know how Rehr's family was coping 5 years later.
