The Fire Sacrifice

उपन्यासकार एवं लघुकथा लेखिका सुषम बेदी का जन्म फिरोजपुर (पंजाब) में हुआ। दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय से एम.ए. करने के पश्चात उन्होंने पी.एच.डी पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय से की और उनका शोध का विषय था- “हिन्दी नाट्‌य प्रयोग के सन्दर्भ में”। उन्होंने 1978 से लिखना प्रारम्भ किया। अब उनका नाम समकालीन कथा और उपन्यास लेखन में जाना-माना नाम है। उनके अधिकतर उपन्यास पश्चिमी जगत के प्रवासी भारतीयों के अनुभव, परिस्थितियों, अनुभवों और अंतरद्वंद्वों को व्यक्त करते हैं। उन्होंने उन्होंने एम.ए.(दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय) और पी.एच.डी पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय से की। सुषम बेदी हिन्दी को अतिरिक्त पंजाबी, अंग्रेज़ी, फ्रैंच, उर्दू और संस्कृत भाषाओं का धाराप्रवाह ज्ञान है।

1975 तक दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय में अध्यापन के पश्चात अपने पति के साथ ब्रस्सलज़ (बेलजियम) चली आयीं और वहाँ रहते हुए “टाईम्स ऑफ़ इंडिया” की संवाददाता बनीं। 1979 में यू.एस.ए. में प्रवास करने के पश्चात कोलम्बिया विश्वविद्यालय में हिन्दी भाषा एवं साहित्य का अध्यापन आरम्भ किया और अब भी वही कर रही हैं।

सुषम बेदी की पहली कहानी “कहानी” नामक पत्रिका में 1978 में प्रकाशित हुई। अमेरिका आने के पश्चात वह कई उपन्यास लिख चुकी हैं। जैसे कि- हवन (1989); लौटना (1992); क़तरा दर क़तरा (1994); चिड़िया और चील- लघु कथा संग्रह (1995); इतर (1998); गाथा अमरबेल की (1999); नवभूम की रस-कथा (2001)। उनकी अनेक कृतियों का अनुवाद कई भाषाओं में हो चुका है।

सुषम बेदी का सम्बन्ध रंगमंच, आकाशवाणी एवं दूरदर्शन पर अभिनेत्री के रूप में भी रहा है।

Susham Bedi is a good writer and The Fire Sacrifice could have been an effective representation of immigrants’ struggle to succeed in a new society while still preserving their cultural heritage. However, she needs to work on her plotting, as the last half of the novel did not live up to its initial promise. Apart from the protagonist, the characters had few defining characteristics and were hard to keep straight. There wasn’t much of a plot and Bedi didn’t seem to know how to end the novel, so she just rained misfortune down on her characters until everyone was sufficiently miserable. Instead of being left with a balanced picture of the challenges and benefits of immigration, the reader has the impression that America is a wasteland of materialism and moral decay and that living in poverty is preferable to living without traditions.

Interesting plot that raises questions rather than answering them. The repeated inclusion of short scenes of the fire sacrifice throughout the novel provides gives the story a nice touch. The language used is a bit too plain though.
