was it entertaining?
this was overwhelmingly fine and exactly what it says on the tin. it's a why choose (or reverse harem, if you like) series of cozy, low fantasy romances with multiracial MMCs, a witch FMC, and a talking cat familiar. each story introduces a new MMC, who can't help but be taken in by the ethereal, but also adorable, aurora. everyone loves aurora and she has never done anything wrong, ever, at all. each book is multi-pov, with more being added as new MMCs are introduced. all 4 books take place in the span of a year and heavily feature gaelic and pagan festivals like samhain, lughnasadh, and beltane.
book 1 introduces alden, a vaguely brown-skinned and very large man with curly brown hair. (hair is very important for all the the MMCs.) alden is the grumpy to aurora's sunshine, he only communicates in grunts, and he doesn't really have much in the way of consent or agency. he gets roped into repairing aurora's cabin for free (she makes a token attempt to pay him, but he's just so taken with her that he turns it down.) he just kind of stands there when she forces her way into his cabin. and he just kind of falls into bed with her after very little to no indication that he might be interested in her. they fall wildly in love, of course.
book 2 introduces rowan, a smaller — but still large because aurora is so smol — man of undefinable origin with obscenely long, flaming red hair. he's a knight and aurora is his queen. no, really. they finally stop (literally) bumping into each other when aurora is named the may day queen and rowan the horned god. this becomes a recurring thing throughout the rest of the books. they fall wildly in love, of course, and alden is just along for the ride after a very brief and ultimately anti-climactic conversation. there's also a chicken, named lucy. for reasons.
book 3 introduces faolan, an ostensibly black wolf shifter (not a werewolf, a literal wolf) with inexplicably straight, waist-length, black hair that never tangles or knots despite sleeping at least 12 hours a day. faolan shows up in aurora's forest with multiple wounds of unknown origin, after tracking her sent because she's his fated mate. a consistent theme throughout, and moving forward, is that faolan has little to bo control over his emotions, allegedly because shifters are slaves to their beasts, which constantly puts everyone else in danger. faolan is also an asocial recluse who doesn't like to share aurora. sigh.
book 4 introduces thorne, a stranger with pale skin, paler hair (short this time), and even paler eyes. he shows up in the middle of the night, during a catastrophic snow storm, with a vague explanation of travelling and refuses to answer any questions. despite all good sense, aurora invites him to spend the night in her remote, isolated cabin with one bed and a couch (and 3 other live-in lovers and some unexpected guests). faolan doesn't like him (or anyone), because he smells weird. rowan doesn't trust him because he's cagey. alden has no feelings about anything, he's just there.
i guess. 3/5 stars
was it enjoyable?
technically, yes? it was so just so saccharine and one-note. every one has trauma that is neatly resolved in one book, one conversation, one hasty sex scene. the MMCs, especially alden, are largely convenient hat racks with requisite dangly bits. faolan is also a walking stereotype. it all just kind of is. 3/5 stars
was it well-written?
without knowing exactly when these are supposed to be set, it's difficult to say. but know this: they get around by horse-drawn carriage and light fires in every room, but also say things like "pussy," "clit," "haul ass," and "sourdough starter." 3/5 stars
DNF at the endish of book one. Repetitive writing and word usage, boring, boring characters. Aurora "i'm so small" whatever her last name is is a witch who moves into an inherited cottage in a new village. Sounds so cozy and fun and romantic! Except that she has zero personality short of the fact that she's a witch - which is literally never fleshed out - and that she's so skinny and small and everyone else ever is bigger than her in some way. She falls in love with the first love interest after one conversation (if you can call it that, she talked to him and he stayed silent).
2/5 because i'm weak and 1 star feels mean.

I did struggle with the multiple lovers part of this book. It just came off as cheating, much of the time. I'm glad I stuck it out, though, and I'm very happy with the ending.
I loved, loved, loved this series. It had spice, but the entire story wasn't about that. It made me feel warm and cozy while I read it. The setting of a small cottage and garden hidden in the woods. She bakes sourdough, is a garden witch and somehow keeps collecting men, and they all end up being okay with each other. It is a fast, happy read that puts you into a cozy state of mind, with just a few sprinkles of good, raunchy spice.
