Shinoa... I told you not to touch Yuu!!!! Jesus Christ just stop this!!

Stop trying to create a thing between them because that will not happen!

Only Mikayuu is real!

Well, Mikayuu and Gurenshi.

Guren and Shinya... I just can't get enough of them! I need more. These two need to become canon.

I keep saying this but.. I'm so excited for Catastrophe at Sixteen! Seeing teen Guren and teen Shinya.. seeing their Squad come together. Knowing more of Goshi and the others.. Young Mika, young Yuu and young Shinoa!

I was a bit iffy about the first few volumes of this series but damn now it’s getting good! The art is super nice and clean and looks great in all the action sequences. Excited to read the next one!

There’s really good tension and action here, as the Imperial Demon Army at first have success against the vampire nobles in Nagoya…until they meet the absurdly powerful Crowley Eusford and his minions! Meanwhile, Mika learns that his Yu-chan is on his way to Crowley’s base in the town hall.

Full review of anime and manga up to chapter 100 or so: https://ajungleoftales.blogspot.com/2...

Favorite moments (spoilers, obviously!):
- The coordination between the Shinoa and Narumi squads as they take down Lucal Wesker…with their jubilation being somewhat deflated by encountering another team who lost half their members accomplishing a similar task.
- Guren and Shinya’s whole dynamic. This Nagoya episode is where you can start to see why a lot of fans ship these two! But, even if you don’t, the affection and understanding they have is sweet. Guren is kind of a grumpy, disrespectful asshole, so seeing someone as pleasant as Shinya not only like him but express things like: “Hey, I know losing comrades is hard for you. I’m here if you need me” really opens up a whole other side to his character.
- Mika constantly calling Yuichiro “Yu-chan*” actually becoming useful! The vampires catch one of the squads of humans, and Mika prevents his from biting down on a poison pill, promising that he’ll let her go if she tells him where Yuichiro Hyakuya^ is. She says she won’t betray her friends, and he snaps back that humans aren’t Yu-chan’s friends. Then, when the other vampires plan to head to the town hall, she tells Mika to stop them, because Yu is there. Mika is confused about why she changed her mind, and she explains that if he’s calling their rookie an affectionate nickname like “Yu-chan,” he’s probably telling the truth about not wanting him hurt!
It would be 5 stars just for that! I do wish that soldier had gotten a happier ending, though…

*Which you can hear in the subbed anime, but unfortunately is only rendered as “Yu” here!
^Actually - since the anime gives their full names right up front - I only noticed on this read that Mika says Yuichiro from the Hyakuya orphanage. He doesn't know yet that Yu gave himself the same last name! Auugh, why do we not get to see the scene where he finds that out! (OK, see, in the light novels that focus on Mika and the vampires, one of the first scenes is Yu and Mika talking about names. Yu doesn't remember what his last name is. Mika does, but would rather link himself to his chosen family rather than his abusive biological one, and so is calling himself 'Hyakuya' after the orphanage where they met, and suggests Yu do the same. Yu does his whole "I don't have a family" thing...but clearly changed his mind later!)

The mission to exterminate the vampire nobles of Nagoya begins for the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. Some squads have more success than ones. The one sent to deal with Crowley Eusford had zero success. Yes, he’s the same vampire whom faced Shinoa’s squad before, who showed such a teasing interest in Yuichirou and ended up taking a bite out of their commander (Shinoa). Shinoa, Yu, and the rest of their squad join with not only Narumi’s team once more, but Guren Ichinose’s own to free the soldiers Crowley, Chess Belle, and Horn Skuld have taken captive. Only Crowley is strong enough to take on Guren and Shinya Hiragi together, even when the two commanders are drawing upon all of their experience and wiliness. In the meantime, Vampire Mikaela Hyakuya continues his search for his lost Yu, as he heads for the same location this intense battle is centered at.

Lots of action and drama sped by in this volume, punctuated by tough choices and side characters dying in a way that their loss was felt, even in the brief time they appeared. All of this was balanced out by playful moments of banter among Shinoa’s squad. I chortled over Kimizuki’s sulleness over Yu being too liberal with his appreciation for the aid of everyone else without singling him out more. Equally amusing were Cross and Skuld’s criticism of Ferid Bathory for being sneaky, followed by Crowley’s comment that Ferid might be sneaky, yet there’s never a dull moment with him. Heh, I think that’s one of the highest compliments an immortal can give another immortal! All of this humour felt like the calm before the storm, moments of pressure release while a major climax builds, one that’s hinted at in the cliffhanger ending. For doing all of this in an exquisite art style which makes me linger over the panels, I give this four stars.

A lot of more fighting, some deaths and some new characters.

Mika and Aiko? Oh, wow.

I'm wondering when Mika and Yu will finally meet (again) and what will happen.

Guren & Co wanting to rescue everyone in five minutes? That will be interesting. :)

So I think it would be a good idea to write a mini-summary of each volume so i can remember more or less what happens in each. This one is actually still part of the anime (second season) so I pretty much knew all that was going to happen. I really want to get to those that have not been made into anime (where’s my 3rd season!?) so i can finally know what happens after that ENDING :/

Either way in this one the whole Guren mission to kill the vampire nobles in Nagoya has started alredy.

Narumi and his squad appeared in the other volume (je je better not to get attached to them :v) and the two teams kill the very creepy looking... 15th progenitor (?) i think... yes yes 15.

None of them die (for now :”) and that’s very good... yeiiii. Everyone happy.

And then the whole thing goes crazy wrong and the vampires capture a lot of people. Guren finds out and of course they have to go rescue them.

And now the ones that didn’t get captured (or killed) go save the others even though it is kind of suicide mission because they would have to fight against Crowley (i think he is 13th progenitor) and his two... maidens. And they are like... yeah we can’t take this dude and his friends. Which is understandable since Guren and the others are about to get KILLED by them.

Thankfully the “Shinoa Squad” is going al rescate soooo... nothing to worry about right? :””)

En fin... the whole thing is a mess and if I remember correctly things are about to get even uglier.

Aaaalso Mika got information from the long haired girl (aiko or something like that was her name...) about where Yu is and at the end he’s there and I’m just here... waiting for them to hug or something.

Anyways that’s about it.

The team are fighting against vampire noble Lucas Wesker. Lieutenant Guren learn from a soldier that twenty others are hold hostages at Nagoya City Hall. It obviously a trap, but he still decides to go with Shinoa & Narumi’s squad. They have a new target: Crowley Eusford.
The vampire lord find humans are starting to become quite strong and wonder if someone from their rank are feeding them information. It is not confirmed yet, but I would bet that it that creep Ferid Bathory!
The rest of the Demon Army get attack by the vampire troop which include Mikaela. One of them get caught by Mika, the young vampire is determinate to find Yuu and use the young soldier for information. It is clear that nothing nor nobody will stand in his way to be reunited with is friend. Mika seems without feelings, nor remorse but I think what he did was a mercy kill. He slips up from the group and is on his way to City Hall.
Once the Demon Army realize that they are up against three powerful Noble, they are not sure what actions they should take. Shinya think it is better to kill the hostage before they talk, but Yuu wants to rescue them. Since this is pretty much a suicide mission, Guren’s team get to distract Crowley while the two others free their friends.
This volume was action pack. While I found the last one was mostly filler, now thing finally start to move. I can’t wait for Mika to be reunited with Yuu! I also really like Crowley (even if I shouldn’t since he is beating up the “good guys”), he is just so chill and relax with everything, he clearly know that the humans are no match for him.

4.5/5 rounded up to 5! Seraph of the End's pacing is a bit weird. It's very build-up heavy until its explodes all over the place into a massive climax. This volume feels like the main climax to the Nagoya arc albeit with some likely more of it in the next volume. The volume covers the Nagoya fights escalation as Lucal quickly dies and Crowley returns with Chess and Bell with hostages from a failed 30-man attack on them. What follows is more cold military rationalism clashing with idealism as the humans devise a plan to try and rescue as many hostages as possible before killing the rest to stop information getting leaked via torture.
The clashing of cold military raitonalism against group-centered idealism is a neat conflict that gives emotional weight to the reading experience and provides oodles of fun conflict in our characters as some struggle like Yu, fret like Yoichi, hide their anger and deal with it like Narumi and Guren, strongly follow it like Aoki Aohara.
Aoki Aohara is a great segue into the small diversion throughout the latter half of this volume as Mika continues his solo-lobo rogue agenda. Mika's conflict is a strong one and is leading up to what will be a memorably moment when the two reconnect. You can tell they'll set up a deal with Mika wanting to stay in the past and Yu having dealt with the tragedy and moving forward with new friends and joining the Imperial Demon Moon Army.
Aoki Aohara is also just a memorable side character done right. A lot of series have tried to do the one-off side character who dies bravely but Aoki manages to do it perfectly. Her inner strength, the scene of her "playing along" with Mika's deception, her part in Mika's journey to hide his visit to Yu means she's very memorable.
The art side in general continues to be as strong as ever with grand art from Yamamoto and strong storyboards from Daisuke. The art has evolved some form the beginning of the series. The scratchy and thick outlines have been reduced to be either gone or just strong line weighting now. Yamamoto is also drawing a bunch of detailed outfits meaning that while the outfits are more detailed it is more often to see the detail hidden away under full-blacks (and understandably so jesus the man has his work cut out for him in some of these panels and scenes).
Lastly, the fight scenes are amazing in this volumes! All of the fights have strong paneling. I do think Yamamoto struggles a bit with “basic” fights (like sword slashes and stuff) in comparison to when he does stuff with the cursed gear but it’s still strong. The fights are also living up to the focus on teamwork and tactics brought in from the last volume. I’m enjoying this sort of "flow" for fights that Kagami writes but it does continue to be a bit too wordy but I think that will be a main element of this manga that I’ll always gripe on lol.

Very action packed hello!!!

The demon army has launched their attack on a bunch of vampire nobles but it's a hard fight and things don't go exactly as planned.

That first fight was insane but it was really cool to see everyone work together. The vampires, especially the nobles, are so powerful and I appreciate how this shows it. I don't personally understand how their power levels work or what a progenitor even is and at this point I'm too afraid to ask.💀

The ass beating they were getting by one single vampire was so embarrassing lmao. Like how many against one and y'all still almost died??? They were fighting for their lives and it was impressive honestly.

This is why my weapon would be a bow because there is no way in hell would I be getting close to those monster bitches !!!

Mika omfg my beloved. Obsessed with him going off saying no humans or vampires interest him while being continuously feral about saving Yu. I'm a feral dog myself when I think about how much Yu also wants to save Mika and how their love for each other and desire to save each other is the driving force of this entire series.

The vampires are such dicks like I hate them but then I like them?? They are good opponents tbh. Crowley is very hot and he was giving. 🤌

Absolutely hated how the female vampire nobles were dressed though like why are you guys so weird about the women?? Then having one of them get on her knees and suck Crowley's blood off his finger like okay freaks.

Ugh Guren, my other beloved along with Shinya. Nothing is gonna stop my shipping of them now I fear. Guren being rightly upset at all the soldiers he lost but then having to save his emotions for later as Shinya genuinely asks how he's doing?? 🥺

Shinya and Yoichi best sniper duo. 🙏 Can't kill a vampire from that distance for shit but bless their hearts, they were trying.

Also cool illusions but imagine sitting around with your buddies chilling talking about your cool demon possessed weapons and yours is a fucking smoking pipe. 😭😭 OR THE ONE THAT WAS LITERALLY JUST CHAINS?? I would quit I'm sorry.

Another solid volume, this one continues the arc in which Lt. Col. Guren, Yuichiro and co. attack a gaggle of vampire nobles so as to provide a distraction under cover of which the main force of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army attacks elsewhere.

There's a clarification of relative strength for sure--if the book stays consistent going forward--as there is no pretense by any of the humans that it takes anything less than a whole squad(s) to deal with a vampire noble. The success in last volume has lead up to the attempt to redeem the failure of squads that don't include Kagami's protagonists leads to the group facing an even more powerful group of nobles. Also Yuichiro's connection to at least one young vampire seem's on the verge of not just being discovered, but put on display for his Imperial Demon Army fellows.

The book seems to me to definitely be headed towards "can't we all just get along" territory at some moments, not something I like when dealing with stories with vampires. I'm hoping it's not as simple as that as the complexities that lead to cooperation makes sense and could be the extent of the foreshadowed changes in vampire human relations.

An okay volume. I like seeing Guren show genuine care towards his troops but pulling himself together to lead them, but I'm having a hard time with the power scale in this series. The audience is not given any indication as to why vampire nobles are stronger than regular vampires or what their ranks mean-they're just stronger because they are. And no, the notion that the army doesn't know because there's little information on them is not a good excuse. I really don't like seeing characters defeat one bad guy only for the next bad guy to be impossibly stronger. If you want me to buy that, you have to explain what makes them so much stronger, otherwise I'm going to get frustrated and think, "well, he's only stronger because he's important and the story needs to keep him alive longer". I hate berating this series for this, but considering how fast paced it is it feels like the story is side-stepping the issue just so it can keep it's pacing. Hopefully this will eventually be explained, but I'm not counting on it. Oh, and in case you're curious, the vampires are still phenomenal assholes and I hate them.

Interesting volume with a lot of fighting going on. There have been many causalities but none of the main characters have died as of yet, which I’m not surprised by. I guess it’s too early on in the story to start killing people off yet. Mika is still looking for Yu, and extorts his location out of a human from the Moon Demon Company. She willingly tells him because she feels he will not hurt Yu as he referred to him by a nickname when he asked about him. After she tells him, she begs him to kill her so she doesn’t get tortured by other vampires for more information. He does so, rather unwilling. He sets off to city hall to find Yu. Meanwhile Yu and his friends are in a tight spot, falling into the trap of three vampire nobles. They try to rescue the hostages regardless, and Guren faces the leader. Hopefully he doesn’t get hurt. That’s pretty much what happened, to be honest. Just more war. Maybe we’ll get some spice in the next volume.

Volume 8 continues where the previous volume left off with our protagonists finally going into the field to take out one of the high ranking bloodsuckers. The action was incredible as well as their teamwork. It was great. The second half of the volume was just as great as the change to Guren Ichinose side was welcome. Additionally, putting him in a situation where he needed his protege's to come to rescue him was really nice to see. I enjoyed seeing him on this side of the equation for once and seeing our protagonists rush into things. I cant wait to see how the situation resolves.

The volume featured Guren on the cover, a YuuMika mini poster, chibi art, the usual afterword, and the cast of the anime. (the anime was great).

Love the mini-art poster in this volume - It looks like a playing card with Yu and Mikaela.

Continuing the Nagoya arc - Yu's team take out Lucal Wesker and then rejoin Guren - Crowley has captured 20 of their soldiers and our heroes mount a rescue aware that they are walking into a trap.

Another solid volume. Lucal looks great with his eyeliner and top hat - Looking just how I imagine the Toreador Clan in Vampire the Masquerade - the panel where he rushes them is particularly good and a notch up for the art on this series which is not bad, but so far never amazing.

Characters are nicely individualised and I do like the different vampires who all have their quirks.

Seraph of the End, Volume 8 continues the battle on Nagoya. The group must take on vampire nobles. This edition tells the tale of the battle. The group will lose and grow at the same time. There is more going on that will be revealed. The tales is a good one in this volume and leads to hope in the future for the series.
