Paul Goldman is an Ecstatic Poet, Author and Spoken Word Performer.

Goldman released the chapbook, Shades of Darkness/Open the Blinds, Calliope Club Press, in 2017.

His latest and longest collection, Silence Speaks, debuts from GenZ Publishing in 2018.

His third poetry collection Upon Your Canvas has been described by one reviewer, Author Paula Rosenfeld, as:

"Paul Goldman's poetry movingly explores the paradigm-shifting, inward journey of awakening - through an ecstatic dance with the Divine Within."

Paul Goldman produced the CD Wild Joy Released: The Ecstatic Poetry of Paul Goldman with the assistance of friend and extraordinary musician Tom Jacobs. Just a few short months after the CD
release, Wild Joy: Ruminations was published in 2010 by River Sanctuary Publishing. The poems in this work were quite favorably to Rumi:

“[Written] with the freshness of an adolescent’s first love and with the maturity of wisdom in declaring that “the bringer of joy unbounded brings deep sorrow,” these “chanted words connect like a string of rosary beads,” to reveal a new human, Homo Luminous. The wild, holy energy within this book can burst forth only from a “man who has lost himself in love,” such as Rumi and other seers, whose poetry this volume now joins.” -Vern Barnet, Faith and Beliefs columnist, The Kansas City Star

Journey Into Oneness, his next collection of ecstatic poetry was released in 2011 by O-Books, London, England.

Paul Goldman is now on Book Tour across the USA.

I love poetry that is Classic and has a nice flow as well as some rhythm. As such when it comes to poetry books I am quite harsh when it comes to the poetry within their pages and it just seems to me that so much modern poetry isn't quite poetry. Why this change?

Unfortunately Upon Your Canvas continues to carry on this tradition since when I pick up this book and open it the poetry just seems words written in poetry format but without prose. It seems dry with no flow to it and cannot be saved by its rhyming either. As such I found the writing to be stifling and hard to get through, which is a shame since the concepts offered would have been interesting in any well written style otherwise for those who like the subject matter.

And talking about the subject matter it is mostly a combination of New Age and self-help themes exploring one's psyche as a canvas that is painted by one's self-development. As such these works were accompanied sparsely by artwork produced by Natosha Keefer.

These artworks maintained the same color theme and most of them were just named after the poem that it was used to decorate. In my opinion I preferred the artwork more so than I actually enjoyed the writing and just wished that instead of using so much blank space around the painting they would have made it page-wide instead.

All in all if I hadn't read other books that were more complete in writing and more in-depth about self-discovery than I may have found this book of poems to be a bit more interesting. Instead I found myself having to slog my way through what would have normally been a fast read and not really able to compare these poems at all with what I normally prefer.

I was in a poetry mood tonight, so I went to my TBR pile and pulled this book out. I'm so glad that I did. Mr. Goldman writes spiritual poetry that takes you out of yourself and makes you want to strive for better. This is a fairly quick read, but I often stopped on certain lines to think further about what was being said and how I interpreted the words. It is an emotional journey that is ably enhanced by the paintings interspersed throughout the book. The artist is Natosha Keefer and I would be remiss if I didn't mention her work and how well it matches the poems.
There is much to choose from here, but I especially liked the title poem, Upon Your Canvas, Syncopation, This Reverent Madness, Live Simply, Have You Ever, Believe Anything, and I Am Who You Are. Truthfully, there were not many poems that I did not enjoy reading. I heartily recommend this book for when you would like to delve just a little further into your own heart and mind. It is well worth it.

While this is a quick read, there is a lot here for the reader to digest. This book is divided into three sections, and there are beautiful paintings to accompany the poetry. The combination of poetry and art creates a powerful experience for the reader, with poems that seek peace, hope, and awakening.

I particularly loved the incorporation of Leonard Cohen’s song “Hallelujah” in the poem “The Fourth, The Fifth, The Minor Fall, The Major Lift.” Another favorite is “Live Simply,” which is a wonderful reminder for everyone.

If you are looking for a momentary escape, this is a good book to pick up, as the poems are well-crafted and passion-filled. The beautiful cover, with its vivid strokes, is a wonderful complement to what is inside.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Upon Your Canvas is a collection of connection, a deep reaching that can only be relayed encapsulated within a poem. The writer shows how to see One in All or many in One. Opening the reader’s heart and mind to receive the Peace and Love reiterated within the pages and paintings of this lovely book.
