Charpentier died in an automobile accident shortly before the first edition of this book appeared in 1981. It was reasonable that the publisher felt the need for a new edition more than twenty years later. Unfortunately, the result was not on the same level of quality as the original.

I think this is a really good guide to learning how to read the New Testament. It tries to open the mind to understand how the texts came about, what the intentions of the authors may have been and what their writing style reveals about them. It helps you go beyond a wooden, literal reading of the text, to see the Scriptures as part of Christian tradition. The book helps to show the relationship between God's revelation and the Bible which is honored in Christian tradition.
