Another book I couldn’t put down
Duty Preserved — Dominic Pierce

Five books into the Citadel Solutions series, and I am officially hooked. I genuinely love these books.
Duty Preserved was another fast-paced, action-packed romantic suspense that kept me turning the pages. This time we get Donovan and Sarah’s story, with Donovan working for Citadel Solutions and Sarah working as an American veterinarian on a wildlife reserve in Kenya.
What I continue to love most about this series is the heroes. Donovan is strong, protective, capable, and completely tuned in to Sarah. These men don’t just protect the women they love—they notice them. They pay attention to the little things, see what other people miss, and make their women feel known. And apparently, that is my ultimate book boyfriend kryptonite.
I also really appreciate that the romances in this series are built on communication and trust. There isn’t a constant stream of unnecessary misunderstandings, ridiculous secrets, or manufactured relationship drama just to keep the couple apart. The characters actually talk to each other, work through things together, and become a team.
The action and suspense are another huge part of why these books work so well for me. They are fast-paced without feeling rushed, and the danger comes from the actual story rather than unnecessary romantic melodrama. I was completely invested in seeing how everything would play out.
And, as always, I love knowing that these couples aren’t just getting a happily-ever-after at the end of the book. The epilogues give us that glimpse into their future and show that these relationships are for the long haul, which matters so much to me.
At this point, I think I can officially say Dominic Pierce has become an author I’ll automatically pick up. Five books into Citadel Solutions and I’ve enjoyed every single one.
Strong, protective heroes. Women who are genuinely seen. Great action. Solid romances. Communication instead of unnecessary drama.
What’s not to love?

I absolutely loved Sarah and Donovan! Their initial meeting was unforgettable, but Sarah ran back to the safety of her life caring for animals. Fate had other plans, though. When Donovan moves to Kenya to train elite reserve rangers against poachers, both are stunned to find themselves working in the very same camp.
Sarah has been burned before and is terrified to let her guard-down, but Donovan makes her want to take that leap of faith. And Donovan is completely blown away by her—she’s beautiful, strong-willed, and a fierce protector of both her animals and the rangers. The chemistry between them is electric, starting as a convenient arrangement to manage their past emotional baggage, but quickly deepening into a connection neither can ignore.
Just as the heat between them ignites, the poachers make a bold, dangerous move, setting off white-knuckle, high-intensity scenes that kept me totally mesmerized.
The descriptive writing is incredible. The vivid details of the Kenyan bush, the majesty of the wildlife, and the intense ranger training make you feel like you are standing right in the heart of the reserve. It’s a beautifully written, passionate, and altruistic story that glues you to the pages. Sarah and Donovan's journey to their happy ending is one I'll remember long after finishing the last page. Highly recommended!

Enjoyed it, pillar to post
I have been following this series for a while. I had reservations about book one before I read it, solely because it was written by a man, and I have never read any male romance author who did the romance well. The action, the storyline, yes, but not the romance.
This is different. I can still tell to some extent that the romance is from a male perspective, but it's a believable one. There's some growth to both the MMC and FMC, and the FMC is not completely helpless, although there are several issues with her self esteem; but I find that to be the case often even with female authors. It seems that women with a healthy self esteem don't get to have great romances.
All that aside, I find myself looking for the next book in the series, and enjoying the one before me, becoming immersed in the story and intent on finishing it to see how everything resolves. The author has gotten the " being supportive without trying to fix everything and listening to what the FMC is saying " part down pat. I really appreciate that. The military aspects are believable without being bogged down by too much detail.
The series is worth reading. Each book is self contained. No cliffhangers and a definite HEA for the characters, and did I mention enjoyable?

Donovan and Sarah’s first meet, does not go well, Donovan is on assignment and Sarah is on vacation. After a very embarrassing night in Paris, Sarah returns to work in Kenya as a veterinarian at a conservatory, where Donovan’s next assignment is to train the rangers to protect the animals from poachers. Neither can believe the two have met up again, and now Sarah is face to face once again with the man she embarrassed herself with. They are both there to do a job and as the two work side by side, the attraction grows until neither can deny it. The danger is real and it’s getting closer to them and it will take all of them together to survive an ambush.
Another page turner that grabbed my attention from the beginning. Sarah is dedicated to her work and doesn’t believe she can hold the attention of Donovan, which bit by bit, proves her wrong…she is worthy…loved it. And Donovan, has his issues but with Sarah and the rangers, prove him wrong as well. Great story line, some suspense, amazing characters, steam, and descriptions that were spot on kept me flipping and loving Donovan and Sarah.

DUTY PRESERVED is the fifth instalment in Dominic Pierce’s contemporary, adult CITADEL SOLUTIONS romantic suspense series. This is veterinarian Dr. Sarah Calloway, and for US Army K9 Handler turned security specialist Donovan Hughes’ story line. DUTY PRESERVED can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Sarah and Donovan) DUTY PRESERVED follows Dr. Sarah Calloway and her team, Alyson Gooodwin, and Daniel Henderson as they embark on a year’s long fellowship, tending to the wildlife on a Kenyan reserve but Sarah never expected to come face to face with the man who rejected her months earlier while on vacation in Paris, the man who is now in charge of training the local rangers. Donovan Hughes, Andrew Volante, and mission commander Cole Braddock have been assigned as security for an American team of doctors but Donovan finds himself facing the woman he has never forgot but from the outset , the team realizes the young rangers are ill-prepared both physically and militarily, and when a series of big game kills finds everyone on alert, it is not only the animals in danger but the people as well.

Our couple met ‘accidentally’ months before-Donovan saved the life of an oblivious Sarah, and our heroine responded rather aggressively. Donovan saw his chance at making amends but their priority is the protection of the animals and the people hired to keep them safe. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate.
The secondary and supporting characters are charismatic, energetic and dynamic. We are introduced to Donovan’s co-workers Andrew Volante, and mission commander Cole Braddock; Sarah’s team members, Alyson Goodwin, and Daniel Henderson, as well as the newly hired young rangers who are determined to learn their craft. Alyson and Cole’s story line is next.
DUTY PRESERVED is a story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, greed and money, acceptance and love. The character driven premise is detailed, dramatic and edgy; the romance is seductive; the characters are determined and animated.
There is one question of Daniel Henderson’s role, and the fall-out with the team, that has not been addressed-I am hoping the author reveals more in Cole and Alyson’s story line. At this point, Daniel is more of a red-herring than anything else.

Citadel Solutions: Duty Preserved Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️
Citadel Solutions is a fantastic book series full of alpha males that are protective, supportive, professional, and will do anything that is needed to protect those that matter most. Duty Preserved is the 5th book in this series and to say I enjoyed this book is an understatement. To me this book stands out because it starts with some action but the story unfolds like a long beautiful walk around the preserve. Donovan and Sarah happen to both be in Paris at the same time she’s there to relax and he’s working, however he manages to make an impression on Sarah. Sarah also leaves a very lasting impression on Donovan as well, which makes her want to crawl under a rock forever. Sarah is an amazing vet working in a nature preserve in Africa and loves everything about her career. She has the pleasure of also having her bestie Alyson right by her side working as well. As much as Sarah was hoping to forget her moment with Donovan, well fate decided they needed to come together again. Donovan enjoys working for Citadel Solutions and using the skills he learned in the Army, however this next job may bring his past screaming into his present. Will Donovan be able to help train the young men that want to protect the animals and people in the preserve? Can Sarah move past her mortification of her first time meeting Donovan and show him who she really is? Alyson is the best friend almost everyone either has or has known she’s loud, her personality walks through the door before she does and she will push you out of your comfort zone. Sarah loves her loud friend and someone else seems to notice her as well. When the unthinkable begins to happen around the preserve such as poaching and then a horrific incident can Donovan help Sarah to move forward? Will Sarah show Donovan that he doesn’t have to shoulder his past alone, that together they are stronger than when they are alone? But when the team gets close to figuring out who is poaching will Donovan and Andrew make it in time? For everyone who has ever been told they weren’t worth anything or that you will never be good enough, this book shows you that you are to the right person. That person can heal you in ways you never thought possible and feel whole all over again. There are two characters that I was secretly hoping we would get their story as well and I’m beyond thrilled to know it will be the next installment of Citadel Solutions!! What I liked:
* Sarah Calloway: veterinary fellowship in Kenya, loves her work, intelligent, persistent, consistend, responsible, good friend, excellent at what she does, strong, survivor, perfect for and with Donovan
* Donovan Hughes: Former Army K-9 Handler, excellent trainer, lethal, focused, great team member, supportive, strategic thinker, focused, open, honest, perfect for and with Sarah
* The mature, honest communication between Sarah and Donovan and the way they supported and uplifted one another
* Alyson Goodwin: Veterinarian, Sarah’s best friend, influencer, outgoing, talkative, strong, resilient, impacted by her last animal treated in the field
* The growth exhibited by the twelve rangers working to protect the preserve and the way they came together as a team under the guidance and training of Donovan, Andrew, and Cole
* Knowing that Cole and Alyson will be the main characters in the next book
* Looking forward to books starring Jace (tech guru), Andrew, and any others of the Citadel Solutions team
* Learning more about the training of the rangers and the animal care scenes
* Being able to dislike the poachers and glad that they were dealt with as they were
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* All of it really except…

I wasn’t sure how I would feel about a book set in Africa, but this author brought the area alive while threading through a love story. Sarah Whitman has never felt enough even though she graduated, as a doctor, to care for large animals. While spending time in Kenya, an area she has come to love, she feels at home and has made a dear friend in her coworker, Alyson. When Alyson plans a quick trip to Paris, Sarah hesitates to tell her no and they are accompanied by Alyson’s boyfriend. Encouraged to break out of her shell she asks a man if she can join him and is told that he is waiting for someone. What she doesn’t know is that Donovan Hughes is working a dangerous case for Citadel Solutions. Later when she leaves for the hotel, she is accosted by a man and is saved by Donovan Hughes, the man from the bar. Donovan, along with Cole Braddock and Andrew Volante are on assignment. When she and Alyson return to the preserve, they learn that a team will be arriving to evaluate the rangers who are their security. What they find is a group of young men with little to no training. It is up to Donovan and his team to train them to guard the preserve and animals from those who see the animals as trophies or financial rewards. They will face danger from the animals as well as poachers. The relationship between Sarah and Donovan is interwoven between the challenges they face day to day to survive and protect the animals they have come to love. Duty Preserved was such a fun read! I really enjoyed Sarah and Donovan’s story and the way Dominic Pierce combined romance, suspense, and adventure with the incredible setting of Kenya.
Sarah is a great character. She’s compassionate, independent, and completely dedicated to the animals and the people around her. I really liked seeing her find her confidence again and realize that her past doesn’t define her or what she deserves.
Donovan is the perfect counterpart to Sarah. He’s tough and experienced, but there is a much softer side to him that comes out as he gets closer to Sarah.
Sarah and Donovan have both been through things that have left their mark, and I loved watching them help each other move forward. Their relationship is a slow burn, and I liked that it developed naturally rather than feeling rushed.
And I loved the Kenya setting. The wildlife, the reserve, and the work being done to protect the animals made the story feel different from the typical romantic suspense.
There is plenty of danger and action when the poachers start closing in, but there are also lighter moments and some humor that keep the story from becoming too heavy. At its heart though this is a story about healing, trust, second chances, and finding someone who sees you for who you really are.
A great addition to the series with wonderful characters, an interesting setting, romance, action, and enough suspense to keep me turning the pages. I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes romantic suspense with a little something different.

Sarah and Donovan have both been through things that have left their mark, and I loved watching them help each other move forward. Their relationship is a slow burn, and I liked that it developed naturally rather than feeling rushed.
And I loved the Kenya setting. The wildlife, the reserve, and the work being done to protect the animals made the story feel different from the typical romantic suspense.
There is plenty of danger and action when the poachers start closing in, but there are also lighter moments and some humor that keep the story from becoming too heavy. At its heart though this is a story about healing, trust, second chances, and finding someone who sees you for who you really are.
A great addition to the series with wonderful characters, an interesting setting, romance, action, and enough suspense to keep me turning the pages. I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes romantic suspense with a little something different.

This was another solid instalment in the Citadel Solutions series with a vet(erinarian) FMC and a vet (military style) MMC. I didn't like it quite as much as Book 3 - I suspect maybe Mr Pierce made a deliberate decision to step back from the slower pace and the touchy-feeliness of Duty Unleashed - and I'm a little sad about that, but it was still an enjoyable read.
In particular, I love that we still have the competence dynamic I really enjoy in romantic suspense pairings - and in any other genres, for that matter. Sarah was extremely competent at what she did (managing wildlife as a vet fellow), and Donovan recognised and respected that competence without being threatened by it. I seriously need more books by male authors that feature that dynamic!
That said, the one thing I feel like this series is missing is any women in non-civilian, operator roles. Yes, his FMCs mostly get to be competent in their own (civilian) spheres, which is awesome... but the security and operations sphere that the Citadel guys cover is still a complete sausagefest, and after 5 books, that's starting to grate a little. I'd really like to see Ethan hiring ex-military women and at least seeing them there as NPCs in the background of a Citadel Solutions operation (if not actually having a book with an FMC operator and an MMC civilian for a change)

Sarah works in Kenya on a reserve, and she’s a vet who protects the animals with two other colleagues. What she doesn’t expect are animals dying. She sees Donovan and two other men who are in Kenya. Not sure, and he explains his company Citadel Solutions have sent them here. They are sent to train the rangers at the camp.
A Paris trip is where they met, and with the courage of her friend she approaches him. A situation she has no clue she’s in the middle of comes into play, and he comes to her rescue.
He makes sure she gets back ok to her hotel room. He even goes a step further, but does it anonymously.
Nothing is said until they see each other in Kenya. Which was a surprise to both of them.
A spark of attraction comes between them. I was a bit confused as he made a comment that if he had not been working on an op that he would have been interested in her? So they spend a night together to wait for medicine for the animals. It gets heated. Then nothing is remarked after that. It just jumps to them back at camp.
I mean all and all it was a great book. A fast paced, heart pounding situation on the edge of my seat. One other little thing that was missing which I hope is cleared up. Does Sarah stay in Kenya? I mean Donovan’s job is always on the go.
I can’t wait to read Cole and Alyson’s book.

Someone give me bandages please, something to wrap around my heart. Donavan and Sarahs first meet is epic and will stay with you as will the vivid descriptions of Kenya and the people. I cannot put this book in one neat little box and move on to the next. The characters have become real to me; Kenya is now front and center in my face. I love the strength and the compassion that Donovan and Sarah have. Watching their relationship stumble and grow. The rangers, young boys learning and growing as they realize what is really needed to protect the animals. Donovan, Andrew and Cole are in Kenya to train the "rangers" to help protect the animals on the preserve. Sarah, Alyson and Daniel are there as vet to take care of the injured etc. There is tension, romance, intrigue, adventure and more. This pulled me in, taught me, moved me and left scars on my soul and a window of hope as life moves on. Thank you for the advance copy. I freely share my honest thoughts and opinions. Wow this was such a great book. The cast of characters and not just Sarah and Dominic but the rangers as well, actually all of them.
There was high points and emotional moments plus the sweet romantic moments that were slow to come but worth the wait. And oh boy the climactic moments at the end was amazing with a fist raising. Incentive.
Sarah had her issues as did Dominic but they were so right together and everyone knew it but them at first. Dominic was called in with team mates Andrew and Cole to train the rangers of the preserve to be the first stop to protect the animals. He was forthright and very knowledgeable and I enjoyed the way he got satisfaction from the efforts of the rangers.
Sarah is the wildlife Vet who in the end was running everything herself when her fellow vet were no longer there. She was so good at her job and that insight into the work she did really added interest.

This story has made Kenya my dream and fantasy land. So clean and pure, until it is spoiled by malicious outsiders. It reminds me of the movie Out of Africa.
We are all impacted by our past experience. Donovan and Sarah are no exceptions. Donovan’s past decision causing a young man’s death, so he never wants to be responsible for anyone else’s life again. Sarah has lost her self esteem under a man she loved. Sarah has come to Kenya reserve fellowship to prove herself. After the debacle of their first encounter in Paris, she has never thought she will see Donovan again. There is humor about the way she keeps ruining his shirts. Donovan only agrees to train the local rangers in this assignment. Then the poachers show up in their reserve, killing animals for their horns. It changes the local rangers’ training. Now they have to be soldiers too. The danger is no longer just with animals when money is involved. I love the way Sarah and Donovan help each other cross their emotional hurdles and come out on top. I can’t wait to read about Sarah’s best friend after she got mauled during a lion rescue.

This book is my favorite so far in the series. Not only were the story and characters compelling, but preservation in all forms is a subject near and dear to my heart. Sarah is a wild life veterinarian in Kenya to help animals on the preserve have long lives whenever possible. Donovan and team have come to train the local militia that protects the preserve and keeps the vets safe. While there, they find that poachers are killing rhinos and taking only the horns. Sarah and Donovan have been getting close and Donovan's protective side tries to keep Sarah safe. She has a few self-esteem issues but is no shrinking violet. She won't stay safe when the animals need her. I love how Donovan and Sarah really "see" each other and this understanding leads to the happy ending they both deserve, while the militia and the Citadel Solutions guys work to bring the poachers to justice. Another wonderful book in a wonderful series.

I was excited when I found out the premise and the venue of Duty Preserved. I've read books before that took place in Africa but not like this one. It's set in the wilds of Kenya with all sorts of big game animals woven into the story. I was fascinated by the treatment protocols and the human interaction with these creatures. Sarah Calloway has found herself on this outlying game preserve and is trying to unlearn that she's essentially worthless, as an old flame told her in many different ways on many occasions. Donovan Hughes is a battle ridden warrior with demons too. He left the service because of those demons and now works for Citadel Solutions training a group of untested, naive young rangers. He and Sarah's relationship has a memorable start, one she'd love to forget but the longer they're together the stronger the attraction grows. The final chapters are dangerous, dramatic and suspenseful enough to have you turning pages to see what happens next. I've really come to love Dominic Pierce's characters and the tales he weaves around them.

Has to be my favourite in this series so far by far, such a great story. Loved the setting, loved the characters, loved the plot, nothing I didn't like apart from the fact it had to end. Sarah Whitman made quite a first impression on Donovan Hughes when they meet in a Paris nightclub, one she'd prefer was buried deep never to be revisited or spoken of again but fate can be a funny thing and low and behold Donovan turns up at the village and vet clinic in Kenya where she has been working for a year and bam her second impression is only marginally above the first. Donovan is in Kenya with two team mates from Citadel Solutions to train the local rangers and turn them into a professional force against poachers.
Utterly dedicated to her veterinary work Sarah loves her job and this beautiful country, animals she understands but men baffle her, she is slowly trying to rebuild her confidence after a previous boyfriend destroyed her self-worth. She is instantly attracted to Donovan but simply cannot believe he would see anything in a woman like her. Donovan wasn't expecting Sarah and the smart, strong willed woman quickly burrows under his skin and into his heart. What an author Dominic Pierce is! Such a different perspective than the normal romance writers :) I have devoured every single book in the series. I crave the suspense and romance. Each one better than the last, and his first book was awesome!
Donovan Hughes has had cameo appearances in other books, but now it's his turn. A chance meeting with a woman in Paris ends abruptly and embarrassingly for Sarah Calloway.
Imagine her surprise when he shows up on the wildlife reserve where she's a vet fellow. Citadel Solutions were there to train the rangers responsible for protecting the animals from poachers.
The attraction from Paris was still there. Sarah has some baggage, but Donovan has a way about him that quieted that little voice in her head. Their relationship developed organically as they navigated the dangers of the rugged Kenyan terrain. I'm talking both the animals and the people.

Donovan is broody, keeps to himself, and is completely focused on his assignment. Then there’s Sarah, the veterinarian working on the reserve and responsible for all of the animals.
The two actually ran into each other in Paris shortly before Donovan arrived in Kenya. He had to blow her off at the time because he was on assignment, but now that they’re “working” together on the reserve, they finally have a chance to see where their attraction might lead.
I loved this slow-burn story about two people finding each other while working together for the greater good. The chemistry, the setting, and the storyline kept me completely invested from beginning to end.
This was such a great read, and I’m already looking forward to the next book! I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Loved the first meeting between Donovan and Sarah. It still makes me chuckle to think of the end of that meeting as well as their next meeting in Kenya.
Donovan is a man of few words, has a steady presence, and is direct in him communication. Sarah is fearless, stubborn, and compassionate, especially for the animals in the reserve.

Donovan Hughes was briefly introduced in Duty Compromised and ever since I have been intrigued with his character. Now he's got his story and it's a great one! Duty Preserved is a great addition to the Citadel Solutions series. Donovan and his teammates have been sent to Paris on a brief mission. A young lady catches Donovan's eye but he's working a mission so nothing can become of things. Sarah was in Paris on a break from her veterinary work in Kenya when her's and Donovan's paths cross. She feels that it was never meant to be but fate has other plans for these two when Citadel assigns Donovan and his team to Sarah's game preserve! Duty Preserved is loaded with action. There are so many twists and turns to their story I was glued to the pages. It was told from dual POV and has all the action, angst, laughs and heat that I have come to expect from this series. I can't wait to read what comes next!

This new author gets better with each book he writes. This book takes place in Kenya on a reserve focusing on Citadel Solutions Donovan and veterinarian Sarah. Donovan and his team are sent to train the local “rangers” who are really kids with no experience. The descriptions of the preserve, the animals, and the lifestyle is so vivid, I could clearly picture the entire story as it happened. This book is a slow-burn romance between Donovan and Sarah who met in a very humorous way in Paris. Both had baggage that they had to confront. I also loved the secondary characters who brought levity (Andrew and Alyson) to the story. The trainees and the unfortunate practice of poaching brought realism in a part of the world that may be difficult for some to understand but is real, nonetheless. Overall, this was a beautiful story. I can’t wait for Alyson and Conrad’s story.

I loved the setting, getting to know that way of life and the people there, seeing the rangers, vets and Security get to know each other and work together to protect the animals made for very good reading. I enjoyed seeing the connections and chemistry on display, the bonds that were made and the way two people who met in a club found themselves living and working together thousands of miles and many days later. There were things that took me by surprise in this which helped to keep my interest as the setting meant that you never quite knew what was going to happen. I felt strong connections to many of these character and am a little sad to say goodbye to them, I am however looking forward to what Cole and Alyson's story will bring. I am voluntarily leaving this review after receiving an ARC.

An action packed romance
Sarah is in Kenya with a veterinarian fellowship and is really enjoying it. Donovan has come with another Citadel operative to train the new, young ranger recruits so they can patrol their piece of the conservancy. They actually meet in Paris where Sarah threw up on Donovan in the hotel hallway. They are both shocked to see each other but as events start heating up they find themselves more attracted to each other.
These two fabulous characters are real with their own baggage that is dealt with sensitivity but realistically. The characters around them are wonderful as well and add so much to the book. I was drawn in from the beginning and didn’t want it to end! It was a really interesting setting as well along with the issues they all had to deal with. A superlative book!

They are both shocked to see each other but as events start heating up they find themselves more attracted to each other.
These two fabulous characters are real with their own baggage that is dealt with sensitivity but realistically. The characters around them are wonderful as well and add so much to the book. I was drawn in from the beginning and didn’t want it to end! It was a really interesting setting as well along with the issues they all had to deal with. A superlative book!

When I was around roughly 70% through this book I was almost certain how I would rate and review, and then those last few chapters came along to save the day.
New plans had to be formed.
Don't get me wrong, the first 70% was good, but wasn't completely loving it like other books in this must read series.
I struggled to understand/connect with the female main character until the last few chapters. I also wish that one of the secondary character's actions/departure got explained more. But that's because I'm a nitty gritty details reader, not because they were important to the book over all.
BUT THOSE LAST FEW CHAPTERS..... No words could do them justice so I'm not even going to try.
There were several scenes throughout the book that will tear your heart to shreds and one reasons why I'm looking forward to the next book.

This is book 5 in the Citadel Solutions series and it features Donovan and Sarah. She was in Paris on vacation. He was there on a op. Their paths crossed and she ended up drunk and vomiting all over him. The next time they see each other. she’s doing a veterinarian fellowship on a preserve in Africa. Him and another teammate have been sent to this preserve to train the rangers that work there. To say she was shocked to see him was an understatement. The action and suspense was perfect! The romance grew at a believable pace. I was so immersed in this story! It was playing like a movie in my head. I love all the books in this series but this one is my favorite! They just keep getting better and better!
