Anna Kirby is sick of dating. She's tired of heartbreak. Despite being smart, sexy, and funny, she's a magnet for men who don't deserve her.
A week's vacation in New York is the ultimate distraction from her most recent break-up, as well as a great place to meet a stranger and have some summer fun. But to protect her still-bruised heart, fun comes with rules. There will be no sharing stories, no swapping numbers, and no real names. Just one night of uncomplicated fun.
Super-successful serial seducer Ethan Scott has some rules of his own. He doesn't date, he doesn't stay the night, and he doesn't make any promises.
It should be a match made in heaven. But rules are made to be broken.
The Empire State Series comprises the novellas A Week in New York, Autumn in London and New Year in Manhattan.
Praise for the Empire State Series

International, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author, Louise Bay writes contemporary romance novels that make you laugh - the kind she likes to read.
Ruined by the bonk-busters of the eighties, Louise was inspired by Judith Krantz and Jackie Collins, but wants to be Emily Henry when she grows up.
Louise loves the rain, RHOBH, London, days when she doesn't have to wear make-up, hanging out with her kid, elephants and champagne (not necessarily in that order).
This was pretty hot, I have to say that! I loved Louise's writing when I read King of Wall Street and I still love it but I did not feel the connection I expected with these characters and this story.
So, for me it was an okay in-between read to pass the time! Still, give it a go because I have seen many other readers/bloggers enjoying it!
Let me just start out by saying this is one hot, hot, hot read.
I was introduced to Louise Bay from her Indigo Nights new release and I fell in love with her writing so I had to go and grab this book. I am so glad that I did.
You just know that book like this is going to be really good when you can't put it down even after the very first chapter. Wild story that has a somewhat typical storyline but the character development and the smoking hot scenes are anything but typical.
This Book is super sexy. I love Ethan! He is just so sweet. The man oozes sex and certainly knows how to make his woman happy.
Louise Bay is amazingly talented at writing the panty wetting scenes that make your heart pound and this book was completely loaded with them. Deliciously hot and oh, so memorable! Not one to be missed
I've given this an A-/B+ for narration and a B for content at AudioGals.
Having recently listened to Louise Bay’s King of Wall Street, which I picked up on the strength of the review by one of my fellow AudioGals, I was keen on trying more of the author’s work. The Empire State Series caught my eye because of the narrator pairing; I’ve listened to and enjoyed Saskia Maarleveld in a few historical romances, but I’ve never listened to her in a contemporary; and Sebastian York… yeah, well, he could probably make the phone book sound sexy, so I was sold.
A Week in New York opens with Londoners Anna and Leah, at a bar in New York on a night out. Anna has recently come out of a bad relationship and Leah has travelled with her fiancé on a business trip and both are determined on a week of hanging out, retail therapy and soaking up some culture. Anna is approached by an unutterably gorgeous man who makes his interest in spending the night with her very clear – and Anna thinks “why not?” – and decides to go for it. One night stands aren’t her normal style, but the guy is hotter than hell and, she’s sure, knows his way around a woman’s body. She insists on a few rules though; no real names (which he refuses to go with – after all, he doesn’t want the woman he’s in bed with screaming any other name than his own!), no personal details, no exchanging numbers or email addresses; just one night of steamy sex. Other than the names thing, the guy – Ethan – is perfectly happy with all of those things, although he scoffs at Anna’s choice of name – Florence – and insists on giving her a better one, deciding upon – Anna. She can’t deny that’s a bit weird – that he should somehow have hit upon her real name, but doesn’t dwell on it. There are better things to do, after all.
The sex is every bit as hot and satisfying as Anna had hoped, but while she wakes alone the next morning, it’s clear that Ethan hasn’t left, as his clothes from the previous night are still there. Still, it’s for the best – this way, there’s no awkward morning after chat – and she leaves, heading back to Leah’s place to change and get ready for their lunch date.
When Ethan returns from his early morning run, he’s oddly disappointed to find Anna gone. He doesn’t do complicated – he has sex, but not relationships – but something about Anna’s uninhibited, genuine response to him the night before makes him want more. She’s in New York for only a week and will then be going back to London, so where would be the harm in spending some more time with her before she puts an ocean and 3,000 miles between them? He tracks her down to the restaurant she’s booked for lunch with Leah, and things progress from there, with the pair of them spending most of the week together, usually ending up in his hotel suite screwing each other senseless.
The night before Anna flies home, she insists on deleting their text messages and phone numbers – from his phone as well as hers – as that was their initial agreement; a week of fun and mind-blowing sex and then goodbye.
Yet it’s clear that both of them have changed since that first hook-up, Ethan especially. They both remind themselves and each other that ‘this’ is just sex, and their mantra is “no bullshit” – so they’re pretty honest with each other – yet before the week is out, they each admit to themselves that there’s something more going on than just sex. But their time is up, and Anna leaves as planned.
Over the course of the next two stories, Ethan and Anna find each other again and decide that they want to spend more time together. They adhere to their no bullshit rule, and the fact that they talk and are (mostly) honest and open with each other is extremely refreshing, even though there’s the sense that Anna is still waiting for the other shoe to drop. Her track record with men has not been stellar – she describes herself as a “shit magnet” – so she’s almost always holding something back from Ethan emotionally, even though physically she’s completely open to him. Ethan senses this, but isn’t sure what to do about it – after all, he’s never had an actual relationship, so he’s new to this boyfriend thing (although of course, he’s awesome at it!). Anna’s reluctance to let go of that last bit of her insecurity and allow herself to commit to Ethan as wholeheartedly as he is willing to commit to her did get annoying and I admit I wanted to smack her; but at least she is self-aware enough to know what she’s doing, recognise she’s being irrational and want to do something about it. The real emotional meat of the trilogy is in Autumn in London, as this is where the relationship develops into something more than just sex, and in the final novella, Ethan and Anna are an established couple wondering how they can sustain a relationship when their lives are on separate continents.
The story is well written, the central characters are easy to like (Ethan is just dreamy), the dialogue is great and the sex scenes are steamy and plentiful. But there’s a problem right there, because while I’m as big a fan of a well-written, well-performed sex scene as the next woman, each story very quickly turns into a seemingly endless succession of Anna and Ethan going at it like bunnies, and I actually found myself wanting to fast-forward through All The Shagging so I could get on with the plot. Which is actually fairly thin now I come to think about it, and would probably have been sufficient to produce one short novel/long novella had some of the sex scenes been removed – plus there might have been space for a less abrupt ending.
But this is one of those times when the audiobook is saved by the narrators, although fans of Sebastian York – and I include myself in their number – may be surprised when I say that he is outgunned by the smallest gnat’s whisker by Saskia Maarleveld, whose American accent is flawless (to my ears) and whose interpretation of Ethan is every bit as sexy as her co-narrator’s. The natural huskiness in her tone really works here, as she gives Ethan this lovely, gravelly growl that almost makes you forget you’re listening to a woman. The other aspects of her performance are just as strong; her pacing, differentiation, characterisation and variety of expression are all spot on.
Where she really scores, though, is in her voicing of the British characters, because although Mr. York is fantastic at bringing to life these rich, hot, alpha males and while he is undoubtedly able to bring the sexy like few other narrators can, accents clearly aren’t his thing. It’s probably for the best that he doesn’t have a great deal of dialogue as Anna, because although he pitches the female voices right – no falsetto, just a slight raise in pitch and softening of tone – his British accent is… not good. But with that said, it’s only a small part of his narrative overall, and for the bulk of it, he delivers the sort of accomplished, emotionally nuanced performance we’ve come to expect from him.
If you’re looking for a sexy (with lots of bedroom scenes) contemporary romance that is relatively angst-free, then The Empire State Series might be just the ticket. The audio is clearly divided up into three sections, so it’s easy to break up the listen if you want to and both narrators are excellent.
I thought this series was ok. I thought it could have been better. Every time I turned a page it was about Ethan and Anna having sex. There's nothing wrong with having the sexual passion throughout a book, but in this series I felt it was excessive. After some time Anna became annoying with all her doubt about the relationship she had with Ethan. By the time I reached thevend of the book I felt like the last chapter was rushed and just abruptly ended.
A Week in New York brings about the meeting of Ethan and Anna. It’s fun and interesting and leaves you wanting more for both couples. Their short time together is fun and super sexy.
Autumn in London shows us how hard it is for both characters to deal with not being together. It’s a book about second chances and love so deep it hurts.
New Year in Manhattan is the finale of Ethan and Anna’s story and it’s a great finish. Reading what they both overcome and the emotions they feel throughout this book is interesting. The love they have shines and it’s been great to read
I’ve rated this series 3.5 stars as I found myself skimming through all 3 books as they didn’t catch my attention as much as the other parts did, that was my own down about this series. Would definitely read another Louise Bay book in the future.
This has the premise of being my favorite type of genre, attractive alpha billionaire. However this entire series lacks any conflict. I now realize that a HEA throughout 3 books is too much of a good thing. There are times when suspense would be natural, etc. heroine's aversion to marriage, or getting caught breaking fraternization policy I also have a difficult time understanding why this was a trilogy - I think this is a popular way to stretch out stories unnecessarily and be some sort of marketing ploy, but only a handful succeed in distinguishing each element. There were so separate segments in this series and the ending was extremely disappointing by being so abrupt. There was no closure, no epilogue, and it left me upset which is the last feeling I want to feel after investing time and energy into a three book saga. Book 2 was best, Book 3 least. Overall 3 stars.
Mochte den Schreibstil, aber es ging nur von einer Sexszene zur nächsten und dann war es Liebe. Anna fand ich auch mega anstrengend und Ethan und sie haben teilweise wie Teenager geklungen bzw sich auch so verhalten. Keine Chemie. Keine Entwicklung. Keine Persönlichkeit.
Louise Bay!! My goodness, what can I say!! She has quickly stolen my heart with her passionate, raw, and beautifully written romance stories. The Empire State series is definitely one of my favorites!! Anna and Ethan are a match made in heaven. They balance each other. They complete each other. Two halves come together! Their story was hot. It was steamy. It was packed full of giddiness!! This first installment starts off with Anna Kirby visiting New York after a horrible breakup with her biker boyfriend Ben. Not looking for love, but just a chance to get away, she heads to New York to stay with a friend for the week. This is where she meets Ethan! A no Bullsh#t kind of guy. One night only. That's all it will be. But what happens when fate steps in and Ethan and Anna end up crossing paths the very next day?!? A week in New York together is what happens. "No Ambiguity, No Promises, No Bullsh#t" This is their motto and they stick to it. At the end of their HOT and HEAVY week, the two part ways. No phone numbers or ways to contact each other are left behind.
In the second installment, An Autumn in London, we pick up where the first book left off. Ethan is still in New York and Anna is home in London. For both of them, there's never been anyone who has left an impression or impact on their hearts the way the other has. Neither of them thought they'd miss the other, but they do. So much to their surprise, Anna's company has been purchased by another firm and her new boss just happens to be none other then her last fling, Ethan!! When the two reunite, it's like magic. Sparks fly and passion ignites!! Three months! That's how long Ethan will be staying in London to complete a job. They can handle three months together with "No Ambiguity, No Promises, No Bullsh#t". At least, that's what they both think. But the more time the pair spend together, the harder it becomes to part ways. With the end of the three months coming to an end, they must make a decision. Will they part ways once again, or take a chance on love??
Part three, New Year in Manhattan, is the final installment of Ethan and Anna's story and it's packed full of passion, angst and tough decisions. It was PERFECT!!! Louise Bay brought these two together, nurtured their relationship with love and care, then delivered an ending that was beautiful for the pair. This was full of emotion. I was sad for Ethan and Anna but continued to cheer them on the entire way through. I loved how the story unfolded. It gave me goosebumps and all the feels. I seriously am crushing on Louise Bay's beautiful stories right now!!!
Now let's talk about the narrators!! OMG!!! They were AMAZING!! Sebastian York and Saskia Maarleveld brought this story to life!! They were the perfect pair to tell this story. Saskia has the most beautiful voice and the perfect accent for Anna. She portrayed Anna's character and thoughts better then I could've imagined it in my own mind. Ethan!!! Sebastian York is the epitome of Sexy Alpha Male with his powerful and passionate voice. He becomes the character and delivers a story that will make you giddy and hot!! I seriously am going to miss Ethan and Anna!!! I will definitely be listening again and highly recommend this series to anyone who is a fan of romance. You get it all with this series!!! Second Chance, Sexy alpha male, long distance struggles, low-angst, drama free, and an HAE!!! Love, Love, Love it!!!
Well, I think I've just stumbled upon another amazing author and I couldn't be happier about it! Wow, how happy am I that I just read the amazing Empire State Series by Louise Bay? It was fabulous and honestly had everything that I look for in a "lighter" book in this genre. I loved how quickly it started - she really just jumped right in to exactly what we are all looking for and hope we don't have to wait too long for! The sex in this entire series was off the charts hot, but the banter between the H and h was fantastic! Neither of them wanted anything but one night together but, as we all very well know, it doesn't usually happen like that! Two different continents, one love and two people trying to find their way back to what they long for...their true soulmate.
I truly loved everything about this book. The writing was outstanding, the characters seemed so familiar that I felt like I was their friend (sad, I know!) and the overall storyline flowed so well that I couldn't put it down - I didn't want to put it down. Well done, Ms. Bay! I will continue on with each of your fabulous books!
Wonderful story, and what a dream come true.. The promise of hot sex with no rules. Ethan soon finds his one true love in Anna, he can't be with out her. She comes from a broken heart and discovers that Ethan is what her hearts been aching for.
Another new author to add to my list - I have had many of her different series' tagged to read for awhile - finally getting back to my KU stash! I believe this is one of her first or early written stuff published 2104....which is always questionable for me because that was a time of such swing in romance writing genre. This was originally published as 3 novellas, but put together in this box set makes it equal to the size of 1 regular book.
This book captivated me from the beginning. It didn't start out with anything more than a no frills week long fling for Anna and Ethan. It had...and quoted...all the pretty woman vibes, minus the hooker, LOL! The best thing about this story was no complications, no drama, no crazy conflict - just feelings growing stronger and ties getting tighter. Sometimes its just nice to get a book full of swoon!! This series is also at least 60% sexy times...but with that comes all the feels of falling in love for 2 people who weren't looking for it!! I am definitely checking out the other series she's written!
I'm not really sure how I feel about this story. There were things I liked, and things I really did not care for. As little as we know about the characters, especially in the beginning, I liked Ethan, Anna, and their friends. It was fairly well written and edited. There is a happy ending, and I found myself wanting to know more of their after story. That being said, I'm not a big fan of erotica, nowhere in the description does it mention this is an erotica story. Dont get me wrong, I'm not a prude, I like sex in my books, but I also want character development, engaging dialogue, and a story to go along with the sex. These two meet half way through the first chapter, and are going at it hot and heavy by the second. And it never lets up. Too much, too fast for me. I also really dislike serial books, (that's why I bought the boxed set). This is not a true "trilogy" it's one story, that's been separated into three "parts". To me, a trilogy is three seperate books, three seperate stories with a common thread between them. Was it a bad story. No. Was it great? No, not in my opinion. Will I read it again? No.
5 no b.s. stars! What a great series. I thoroughly enjoyed every part of it. What was only supposed to be one night together turned out to be an extremely intense connection. There is a lot of sexy times, like off the chain a lot, but that Ethan...Damn! Grab a fan ladies!
The Atlantic Ocean couldn't keep them apart. Ethan and Anna were both easy to relate to. There wasn't any unnecessary drama. A few things in their own heads, but that happens to everyone.
I would have liked an epilogue, but I'm a huge epilogue girl. Still a very excellent enjoyable read.
3- 5 star reads!! I'm int love with BOTH Ethan and Anna. This series is perfect!!!
A Week in New York (The Empire State Trilogy #1) ✯✯5 New York Styled Stars!!✯✯
I can't believe how much I liked this. I mean I knew I'd like it. But, man did I love both Anna and Ethan. Anna had a bad break-up and went to New York for a vacation with her best friend. She needed to get away and start over. And, wow what a way to start over!
While out with her friend Anna meets Ethan. He oozes sex appeal! She figures there's nothing wrong with having a one-night stand. They head back to his hotel room. Anna comes up with all these rules. Which is perfect for Ethan!! Ethan too has rules. He does not date. He doesn't do sleep overs & he makes no promises. And, he never gives his phone number out. But, one night with Anna and he's breaking all his own rules and then some!!
Now, that Ethan has had a piece of Anna he wants another. Ethan tracked Anna down and it literally gets hotter & hotter. Ethan has always had his rules for his own reasons. Yet, he's willing to throw them away for him. Anna seems to keep reminding him that this thing between them is only for a week. Every time she says it the words seem they cut deeper and deeper into Ethan. I am rooting for Ethan to smack some sense into Anna. To make her realize that the thing between them is real. I can see it.
They literally spend the whole week together. And, all of Ethan's rules are 110% broken times 10. Which was awesome to see. Because, he is the alpha-male. But, Anna is awesome. Who's been hurt. I wish she'd realize Ethan is it. But, she doesn't. Now, their week is over and my kindle almost went up against the wall. The 2nd novella can't come out fast enough.
Autumn in London (The Empire State Trilogy #2) ✯✯5 Second Chance Stars!!✯✯
From the minute I finished A Week in New York I could not wait to get my hands on the second part of Anna & Ethan story. Anna went to New York with her friend after she broke up with her boyfriend. She met Ethan at a bar. What started as a one night stand with no strings attached and no complications.Turned into a week of complications. Ethan who doesn't do relationships and has a strict policy of no sleep overs, no exchanging phone numbers. He wanted to keep Anna as close as possible. They decided to enjoy the week & that was it. When the week was over Ethan wanted to change the rules. But, Anna. Deleted phone numbers out of their phones and left to go home to London.
A few months later both Anna and Ethan are still miserable. Everyday that passes the more miserable they get. Neither of them doing much except throwing themselves into work. Not going out and dating. And, thinking about each other all the time.
Ethan winds up having to go to London for 3 months to head up the merger with another law firm. He';s looking forward to spending time with his sister. While on the plane Anna has invaded his mind. He vows after he gets settled in he will get an hold of her best friends boyfriend and find her.
Anna has to go to an important meeting at work. There's talk about a merger or a takeover. She's not sure. Anna is prepared for anything. Except for when the meeting starts and she's looking right at Ethan. The guy who's invaded her thoughts for months. Anna is instantly pissed!!
Ethan is Ethan and gets the issues resolved with Anna. They make-up, make-up for lost time very quickly. These two sure are hot together!! Wow. Ethan lets it be known right off the bat when they're not at work they will be together. He does something he's never done before. A relationship. Ethan has no idea how it works. But, with Anna it's right.
I absolutely love these 2 together!! They fit so perfectly. Like 2 puzzle pieces made for each other. They have such a good routine. Between working and spending time with Ethan sister & her family and hanging with Anna's friends. Everything is perfect. Except their 3 months are coming to an end. Ethan tries a thousand times to talk it over with Anna. Anna being Anna refuses to talk about it. Both Ethan and Anna are both hoping and praying for the same thing. They want the other to say either "stay with me" ,"be mine", "don't leave my side" & "let's do everything to make this work".
They drove me crazy!! Even though they knew what they wanted. Louise did an excellent job keeping you wondering and guessing who was going to make the 1st move to making their short term thing into a permanent thing. Louise is an evil genius. I can not wait until January when I find out what happens next. Louise is most definitely an author that when she puts out a new book out I won't have to read the synopsis. It will def go on my TBR list. She is that good!!
New Year In Manhattan (The Empire State Trilogy Tour #3) ✯✯5 Epic Hot Stars!!✯✯
Another grand slam by Louise!! There should be a button on Goodreads that gives them permission to automatically put new books that the authors add. Because, Louise is on my automatic add to TBR even if there's still no synopsis, no cover or release date.
This book picks up exactly where the last one ends. Ethan is on the airplane headed back to New York. Anna is standing in the airport hoping he'd comeback.
In true Ethan & Anna fashion now that they are living on opposite parts of the world they have set rules. Oh, Ethan and Anna and their rules. There rules are:
1- They will talk to each other daily, regardless of how short the conversation 2- They will see each other every other month. 3- There would be no bullshit. They would communicate freely to let each other know what was working and what wasn’t.
They def talked to each other daily. That was not a problem at all. Seeing each other wasn't a problem either. The 3rd rule with no complete 100% communication. Now, that wasn't to easy.
Anna wanted Ethan to ask her move to New York so bad. Everyday they talked and he didn't ask made her rethink his commitment to her. Oh Anna. You stupid girl!! Ethan who went from never having a girlfriend/relationship to being head over heals in love with Anna. He was thinking of moving to London and opening a new practice. But, they never spoke about that. Instead, their conversations got hot, heavy, steamy and oh yea hot!! Phew did these 2 step up their hottness.
When Anna does get to New York the hottness continues. And, Ethan. Man oh man. For a guy who's never done a relationship before. He lets Anna know she's his queen. The stuff he sets up for them to do. Man oh man!!
After, a romantic night out Ethan is all confused. Ethan knows Anna is his forever. Anna knows Ethan is her forever. But, their POV of marriage isn't exactly the same. Now, instead of Ethan listening to rule #3. He says nothing at all. Lets Anna go home the next day with her thinking he was acting weird because she was leaving. When Anna does find out she must get back to New York. Back to Ethan. But, will she get there before it to late??
I can't tell you how many times I'd be laughing out loud. Then, tearing up because of the things Ethan either did or said. Total pantie wetter that Ethan is!! I could not put this book down and I didn't want to.
This novella series is a must read!! I was very happy with how it ended. I wish we could get more of their story. What happens next. I think Louise should give me that. Hahaha. I don't know anybody else who could of done Ethan & Anna story like Louise did. I will miss them. But, I'm holding out that Louise will give me more **wink wink hint hint**
Anna is visiting NY from London and has a one night stand with Ethan. Ethan doesn't date but there is just something about Anna that has him tracking her down to "surprise run into her" at brunch the next day. They commence an affair with the understanding that there are no strings attached. They will hang out until Anna leaves for London and that is that. They won't even discuss what they do for a living (they are both attorneys). In the second installment, Anna is sad and lonely in London when her law firm is bought out. She's surprised when the partner sent to manage the transition is...Ethan! They immediately start their relationship back up but things are up in the air when Ethan has to leave for NY. He doesn't want to to ask her to give up her job for him and she doesn't want to be the one to initiate the conversation.
This book reminded me a little of 'Arrogant Playboy' in that we have a one night stand that results in the guy (who doesn't date) falling for the woman in question. Is it realistic? No, but if this is a fantasy, at least he's hard working, rich, good looking and a genuinely nice person. Unlike most romance books like this, there aren't exes threatening to come into the picture or any major drama. The main pressure point is the inability for the main characters to communicate their feelings and future plans to each other.
Overall, I liked this, it was a fast read with a few sexy scenes.
I like the theme overall although the constant misunderstandings irritated at times. This didn’t have to be three books but I understand the marketing strategy. The London installment was my least favorite.
I couldn’t detect any indication of diversity. Everyone in New York and London seem to be straight and white.
Sebastian is a great narrator for American characters. His attempt at a British accent was inconsistent. Saskia is better at accents.
I’m glad I got the box set because I would have wanted the other two books in the series. Don’t waste your time buying them one at a time. This was a really gray series with a strong heroine and a sexy as hell hero. I loved the New York and London aspects of the novel.
I have previously read The Empire State Series as three individual books. It has been a while since I've read them- and honestly, I was looking for something with a British accent- and decided to pick up the audiobook for the trilogy. I was not disappointed. For starters, how can you go wrong with Sebastian York narrating?!? And Saskia Maarleveld- I love her accent!
It took me a while, but only because I didn't want to rush though it. The only reason I held back the extra star was because of the ending. It was well written and I really enjoyed this story.

Wow, loved all these 3 books...when is a one night stand not a one night stand? When you are Ethan & Anna of course....the chemistry between them was just out of this world...it was scorching and I sure as hell felt the heat right through the pages! I loved both of the lead characters especially the total honesty between them and I felt that it was such a real relationship from the passion, the insecurity and uncertainty that the misunderstandings however small were always going to happen...how can they not when you are so far apart? Despite this any misunderstandings were dealt with swiftly and with minimal angst and I loved that. Well written...well edited....well good! A fab series and I'm missing Anna & Ethan already....is there more? Not that I'm aware of but I really would love to see beyond the ending...as perfect as it was...Hint hint!
