Ever since “The Night In Question” left her with a hideous scar and no memory of what happened, Theo Lane has been hiding. An aspiring filmmaker, she uses a hidden button cam to keep the world at bay. She spends the entire summer in a Manhattan café, secretly documenting random “subjects.”
Once school starts, Theo finds her best friend has morphed into a flirtatious, short-skirt-clad stranger. Everyone ignores the scar. As if that will make it go away. The café remains her lunchtime refuge.
Her most interesting subject is the Lost Boy, a stranger who comes in every day at the same time. When she finally gets up the courage to talk to him she discovers why: the Lost Boy, Andy, is waiting for someone who said she’d meet him there…four days ago. Intoxicated by Andy’s love for this mystery girl, Theo agrees to help him find her, and her unhealthy obsession pulls her into a perilous, mind-bending journey. But is it really Andy’s world she’s investigating? Or is it her own?
Barnabas Miller has written many books for children and young adults. He also composes and produces music for film and network television. He lives in New York City with his wife, Heidi; their cat, Ted; and their dog, Zooey.
Readers looking for a thrill ride of a book should absolutely put The Girl with the Wrong Name on their radars. It is an intense psychological thriller that has an aspiring filmmaker as its protagonist. Also, the plot is so unpredictable, it leaves the reader in a constant state of wonder.
Barnabas Miller has created an amazing whirlwind of book that is full of suspense! Lately, I have been really into this genre, which is probably why I enjoyed this book so much. It honestly has it all, a mysterious scar, a night in question, a creepy sanctuary, everything that makes an interesting thriller. This is the kind of book that will blow the reader’s mind!
Theo, in The Girl with the Wrong Name, is such an enjoyable main character. She is brave and curious, and goes with her instincts. Theo’s name is also really interesting, since it has an interesting backstory. One of my favourite things about her is how she wants to be a filmmaker. I always love books with film/TV components, so this book was quite entertaining for me.
The plot of The Girl with the Wrong Name is so unpredictable. This is the kind of book with a powerful and shocking ending that the reader won’t even see coming (think We Were Liars). However, I did feel like there were some loose ends in the book, and I have so many questions after reading it. This was sort of disappointing, because I grew pretty attached to the characters, and want to know more about what happens to them. Other than that, the plot is so fast-paced and thrilling, making this book impossible to put down.
The Girl with the Wrong Name is a thriller with a curious main character and a twisty plot. It is a book that readers will find unputdownable, as it is so fast-paced. Fans of We’ll Never Be Apart by Emiko Jean should definitely read this book, as there are many similar components that will leave readers breathless.
Take an unreliable narrator. Mix it with an unpredictable plot, mystery, suspense and what do you get? The Girl with the Wrong Name.
Psychological thrillers have been one of my favorite genres for some time now and this one was one of THE BEST that I have read. I am usually pretty good (around 85%) at figuring out what is going on/whodunnit/what is real type of THINGS and I could not figure this book out to save my life. And I can't even talk about ALL THE THINGS because even one small inkling could tip you off and ruin the whole experience.
Theo is one of those contradictory characters that I love so much. She is strong; yet vulnerable. Snarky; yet sweet. She has this strong passion for film making and even though it's not something that I would typically enjoy, seeing things in her eyes makes everything POP. She's just so real.
There are a few things in the end that I wanted answers to that I just didn't get. Is that the point? Probably. It doesn't take away from my enjoyment because the whole NOT KNOWING left me wondering for days (okay, weeks) after finishing what happens from here!?
Vague I know - but you must head into this one with blinders on. It's thrilling, unpredictable, a little dark but with a whole lotta greatness. I highly recommend The Girl with the Wrong Name.
I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
What a high, pulse-pounding story this was. I knew there would be twists and turns, but I assumed all the wrong things and this story completely wow'd me.
I didn't anticipate the end or even that final twist but I loved it - every minute. So glad I grabbed this pretty cover and gave the story a try. I loved it
Seventeen-year-old budding documentarian Theo Lane secretly films strangers and obsesses over NYT wedding announcements. She can't remember how she got the scar on her face 2 1/2 months a free The Night In Question. She meets Lost Boy Andy Reese, who's searching for Sarah, a chance encounter with whom he's fallen in love.
Confused yet? THE GIRL WITH THE WRONG NAME had me wondering what the heck was happening and the reliability of narrator Theo. We aren't privy to why she's in therapy, but know she's taking an antidepressant, but I immediately wondered if her problems ran deeper that PTSD and depression and into the realm of psychopathy. Theo had a great, sarcastic, unique voice that drew me in from page one. Even when I didn't like how she treated her friends and parents, I loved her character. I had a hard time seeing why Theo's best friends liked her, she was thoughtless and often unkind. While Theo was fleshed out, the secondary players seemed to exist only to support Theo.
The plot had me guessing and wondering and the resolution took a fill third of the story to explain. Barnabas Miller included so many details in the wrap up that destroyed any credibility that THE GIRL WITH NO NAME could be anything other than a story created in Miller's mind. I was glad that the book had a definite ending, even though it lacked authenticity.
So I can't really decide what I think of this book. It was all too muddy and confusing. Although the book did certainly keep me guessing in its second half (as you could see from my various status updates along the way), and it was full of things I didn't expect, I wouldn't say it was particularly a SHOCK VALUE type of book. It absolutely was unexpected and had elements I've not seen before, but it still had a lot of those fall-back tropes (), not to mention that sheer amount of coincidence that had to occur in order for everything to come together the way it had. I'm awarding points for creativity and the mental gymnastics required of the author to piece together such a complicated plot, but at the root of it all, my reaction to this story was just lukewarm.
Wow, what a page turner! The story gets weirder and weirder with each chapter. Who is Sarah? Who is Andy? What is with that scar on Theo's face?
This is the story of Theo, who's avoiding high school because she was in some sort of accident that disfigured her face. She meets Andy from Texas in a coffee shop and he's searching for a girl named Sarah he met a few days ago who disappeared.
The problem is who IS Andy exactly? Things start to get totally bizarre as they start looking for Sarah.
The only downside I felt about this book is the ending. A little TOO bizarre, IMO.
I love psychological thrillers and this book didn't disappoint me. Theo is the main character, a female, who meets Andy while she is secretly filming him. He happens to be waiting for Sarah, who is his would be soul mate, if he can find her. So Theo takes up arms with him and they go on a search to find Sarah.
Sarah is this mysterious girl that Andy just can't get his mind off and she becomes practically a part of Theo's every thought, too. The two of them go on some pretty scary adventures to find this perfect girl for Andy.
The thing about this book that I really loved is that it was not predictable. I did have some guesses as to what happened to Sarah but I was never spot on. I had some ideas about Andy and other characters as well, but I was off there too.
I have so much I want to say but am afraid I'll spoil it for others who read this, so I'll leave it at that.
Recommendation: If you like psychological thrillers, read this one!
When this started off exactly like some Julia Roberts wedding movie, I NEVER would have guessed how psychologically twisty the story would get.
Like, literally, imagine a twist tie that has been twisted not one or two or even three times like a normal story or a loaf of bread. No, this twist tie has been twisted and turned and flipped and knotted right down to the very end of its little wire tips and then you realize, wait, that isn't a twist tie at all-- it's a freaking necktie in an Eldredge Knot!
Because yes, you've been tricked, you fool! You thought you had it figured out back in the early stages, but jokes on you, because that wasn't the big secret that explained the whole story, that was just one measly piece of the puzzle, and a red herring at that!
This book really amazed me. I received this book as a Christmas gift last year and the blurb seemed pretty interesting but I didn't feel the urge to pick this book up (I have a huge collection of books I still need to get around to) but I'm glad I finally did. This book was full of plot twists and I do mean full. Every time I got used to one plot twist, another one quickly took over. For a little while I was pretty confused on where this story was heading but everything started to make sense/fall together around the end of the story. When I read the blurb I assumed this would be a cute sappy love story but it turned out to be a physiological thriller. It was just what I needed to get back into reading, what started out as a book I felt no real urge to read turned into a book I didn't want to put down.

17-year old Theodore (Thee/Theo) Lane doesn't remember the so called "Night in Question." She believes something awful happened to her but doesn't remember what. Every time she looks in the mirror, she claims she has a 4 inch scar on her face. One could say right from the top, that Theo repressed the memory of what happened to protect herself.
The Girl with the wrong name is dark & twist filled. Some of the twist you think you've figured out only to be hit with a different twist. I thought I would like this book but instead I love it. The year is still young but this book is my favorite book I've read so far.
Prepare for the biggest plottwist EVERRRRRR. En een mooi einde. Dit boek is mijn serendipity.
I love Theo and her personality and her obsession with the wedding announcements in the newspaper. I love Max and Lou and I just really enjoyed this book.
It was fun trying to figure out who Sarah was and the relationship of everyone in the story. I did not see the ending coming and it was a surprise to me that the story went in that direction. But I think it was great anyway. I actually really like how everything came together in the end. All the pieces were put into place and everything made sense.
This one started off not to my liking when Theo declared that she looks like a serial killer because of a 4" long scar on her cheek. I found that very insulting to people with scars, and it was stupid. Most serial killers don't look any certain way.
The format of the book was unique, but I couldn't connect with it. I got tired of Theo talking to herself.
was not expecting this book to give as much as it did!!! i have to say tho it’s good in a bad way. as in it’s entertaining and stupid and fun and shocking but not good but not bad. take off that thinking cap and it’ll be a fun time!
i was thinking it’d be a sappy little romance with a little “mystery” but i was wrongggg
you think you know what’s going on but it just keeps going and kept on shocking me very unexpected.
i hateeeeed that everything happened in september 2003 tho. like that’s wayyy too close. everything tragic happened september 3, 2003…
it’s very unbelievable for a 5 year old to be able to remember everything that theo did. but wooooowwww.
spoilers:
theo was hallucinating everything!??? she had an older sister?? Andy wasn’t real but wasn’t real?? the video tape where we find out her sisters bf/ husband was actually insane?? emma killing andy in the end!!!!
THE REAL ANDY??!???! YUCKKKK
theo was 5 when her sister, cyrano, died. cyrano died at 18 the day she got married to andy.
I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT HE REALLY MARRIED CYRANO AND THEN THE NIGHT OF THEIR WEDDING HE MAKES A WHOLE THING FOR THEM TO DO THE DO WITH FLOWERS AND CANDLES ALL ROMANTIC. WHILE THEYRE DOING THE DO HE GOES CRAZY BC HE THINKS CYRA ISNT “PURE” SO HE BEATS HER UP JN THE REFUGEE THEY MADE TOGETHER FOR WOMEN ESCAPING DOMESTIC ABUSE!!! AND WHEN 5 YEAR OLD THEO WALKS IN, TO STOP THEM THEN THE ROOM CATCHES ON FIRE AND HE GRABS THE WEDDING RUNG OFF HIS BEATEN WIVES FINGER AND RUNS OUT SLAMMING THE DOOR LEAVING HIS WIFE AND A 5 YEAR OLD IN A BURNING BUKDINNG?!!?!!!? i genuinely gasped.

While it was well-written and plotted, I just think I'm not the ideal audience member. This book is a thriller, yes, but the way the plot comes together seemed implausible to me....but I think this story is one genuinely written for teens.
*semi-spoilers ahead*
------------------------ Things that bothered me: --Theo's mom as a character seems a little incredible. Why she decided to conceal that info is beyond me. --How did Theo's very important tape survive that fire? How did her family not know there were two budding filmmakers in the house? Wouldn't those tapes have been found much earlier? --How had the real Andy, if he was so insane, manage to not have another episode in the last twelve years? How had Emma not figured it out in all their years of dating? --How had no one noticed that Theo was acting so erratically? -- Could that song be enough to trigger such a strong reaction?

This book was an interesting book with some unique aspects. On page 258, Max and Theo(a girl) exchange a conversation. "What's so funny?"... "Just Lou and her whole 'married' thing. She's freakin' hilarious." "I know." I roll my eyes. "Like that will ever happen." Max and Theo secretly like each other but they aren't going up to say that they like each other. Lou thinks that they are perfect for each other. When Theo says "Like that will ever happen," she is doubting the future. It isn't great to doubt because the things you want to happen, won't happen. I liked this book and I would recommend it.
Great story. Lots of fun, humor, weirdness, at least at first, then, oh oh, not so much fun, then, holy shit, scary. Wondering what's going on, what's going to happen, never quite sure till the very end. Twists and truths and more twists and more truths.
Finished it in two days. Couldn't put it down.
Great main character. Lots of heart, lots of pain, lots of confusion, trying to figure things out.
And nice writing style, good, easy flow. Thank you so much for that.
And, yes, interesting from the very first page. Thank you so much for that also. So rare.
I absolutely hated this book the characters and their bad choices but I guess I liked it enough to finish it and the ending was very anti climactic. Not a good debut book.
This book floored me. I cannot believe everything that happened! Honestly one of the best books I have read in a really long time! I would recommend this to anyone!
The synopsis doesn't even begin to serve justice to this book. It has great twists AND explains everything. There's some sexual harassment in it, so trigger warning for that.
I really didn't see the twist coming and I was actually surprised. It was a good read, but the ending was a little boring for me. I didn't understand what was happening at first, but I eventually caught on.
