Eighteen-year-old Ember Wallace is a magical misfit. Her power has a mind of its own and a nasty habit of killing anyone it perceives as a threat. She’s resorted to sleeping in the trees in order to get some peace from her neglectful paranoid father. Scorned by the town, Ember’s dreams of acceptance has never seemed further out of reach.

If that wasn't enough, their caste system doesn't tolerate deviants. If Ember doesn't prove herself she'll be killed, or worse, exiled to the wastelands. Desperate, Ember studies day and night, refusing to surrender to despair. She never thought she would be coveted by two rival castes poised for war. Now, Ember’s worst tormentors want her dead for surpassing them.

Ember is about to learn that in a world which prizes talent above all else, recognition isn’t only dangerous. It can get you killed.

Don't wait another minute. Try out Derailed today.

I really enjoyed exploring this universe created by S. G. Dean. The balance of technology and magic in their society feels natural on this future Earth. Seeing this though the eyes these young people, who are about take their place in the world and the pressures they expect to face, takes the reader into many surprises as they find out that scores from school and graduation are the least of their worries.

You really feel Ember’s isolation and fear as she decides to face her hostile social environment, this scorn is all she knows as the local misfit. But she does discover that she is not as alone as she feels, and the friends she finds are not as afraid of her wild power as she expects. I found the dynamic between the various characters intriguing, and it just drew me into this action packed story.

I really do look forward to learning more of the historic forces that led from the world we know today to the society we get a glimpse of through the turmoil that these characters face. I am looking forward to the next book in this series as there are some great avenues to explore.
