I wanted to love this one. Formula 1? Latina lawyer heroine? Enemies-to-lovers? A goldendoodle named Turbo? Sign me up.

Unfortunately, Checkered Love just didn’t work for me.

The strongest parts of the book were Izzy’s connection to her family, Marcus’s complicated relationship with his father, and honestly Turbo. The dog was the highlight of the entire story. Carmen, Izzy’s mom, was also hilarious and brought much needed personality to every scene she appeared in.

My biggest issue was how repetitive the book felt. Both Izzy and Marcus spend page after page thinking about each other, repeating the same thoughts and insecurities. Instead of building tension, it made the romance feel rushed and oddly shallow. I never felt like I got to know them outside of their attraction to one another.

For a Formula 1 romance, there was surprisingly little racing. For a story about a lawyer, there was very little legal drama. Most of the book consists of Marcus and Izzy thinking about each other, talking to each other, or worrying about each other. I kept waiting for the plot to expand, but it never really did.

The enemies to lovers dynamic started strong, but the enemies phase disappeared almost immediately. Their chemistry never fully clicked for me and when they finally got together, I felt absolutely nothing. No butterflies, no excitement, no payoff.

By the end, the most memorable character was Turbo, and his chapter in the epilogue was genuinely one of my favorite parts of the entire book.

Overall, this wasn’t a terrible book, but it was a boring one. I can see why it might work for readers who enjoy character focused romances with lots of internal reflection but I needed more plot, more racing, more legal drama and a lot less repetitive inner monologue.

Sports romances are a big love of mine at the moment. I’m usually focused on ice hockey but when a good Formula 1 romance comes my way, I’m there to grab it. Unfortunately, this one ended in a DNF for me. It felt too info dumpy to me which resulted in my engagement being incredibly low. I didn’t feel a connection to the characters either and when I’m still feeling like that 15-20% into a book, I know it is extremely unlikely to change. So I’m afraid I have to step away.

Overall, Checkered Love is a book that just really isn’t my cup of tea.

This was such a fun, heartfelt racing romance! 🏎️⚖️

Izzy is a strong, determined lawyer who finds herself working in the racing world after a past case changes her perspective. Marcus is a talented racecar driver who initially comes across as arrogant and full of himself—but as Izzy gets to know him, she realizes there is so much more beneath the surface. 💙

I loved watching their relationship grow, especially as Marcus shows his sensitive, sweet, caring, and thoughtful side. Izzy has spent much of her life protecting her heart because of her complicated relationship with her father, so seeing her slowly let someone in was really meaningful. 🥹🐾

The story also explores Izzy facing another difficult situation where she has to stand up for what she believes is right. Her mom was honestly one of my favorite characters—she always seemed to call at exactly the right time and brought so much warmth to the story. 💐

The main issue with this book is that it tries to tell a story in too short a period. F1 is very different from a lot of sports, they don't have a home base they go back to every week or every couple of weeks, they spend time in a country for a week then move on to the next, which means when writing the love story you either rush the whole thing, or you have to figure out away to keep our love interests running into one another.

I am probably being a bit harsh with my rating, but that last chapter was one of the worst things I have ever read and by the end of the book I was just like, what did I read? For those who don’t know it was written from the POV of the dog. The concept of the story isn't bad, but this is a book that is very much still in the fine-tuning aspect of it, something with potential but the execution is just a little wrong. Neither Marcus nor Izzy are that likeable and there isn't enough time in this book to make it a believable love story. One thing that might help is making all the US races happen one after another; invent a reason why, this means the love story can have three weeks to develop which is just a little more believable. There is too much inner monologue, and plenty of chapters could be cut; this reads more like a novella than a novel.

I really wanted to like this, but I just can't bring myself to mark this higher.

I really enjoyed reading Checkered Love by Mary Rebekah! It was such a fun and enjoyable story, and I found myself getting really invested in the characters and their journey. The romance was sweet, engaging, and kept me wanting to see what would happen next.

I also absolutely loved the dogs’ POV! 🐶 It was such a fun and adorable addition to the story and definitely made me smile. I don’t want to say too much and risk spoiling anything, but I thought it was such a clever touch and one of the things that really stood out to me.

Overall, Checkered Love was a lovely read with great characters, romance, humour, and plenty of heart. I had such a good time reading it, and it’s definitely a book I would happily read again! ❤️ I’d absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, sweet, and heartwarming romance.

Checkered Love was such a fun read! 🏁💕 I loved the mix of romance, drama and the whole racing atmosphere. The chemistry between the characters kept me hooked, and there were plenty of moments that had me smiling, swooning and occasionally yelling at the book. 😂

I really enjoyed the characters and watching their relationship develop throughout the story. The pacing was easy to get into, and the drama kept things interesting without taking away from the romance.

And Turbo?! My favourite little character and the perfect addition to this book!!

Overall, this was such an enjoyable read and a great addition to my romance shelf! Definitely recommend if you love a little racing, a lot of chemistry, and characters you can’t help but root for. 🏎️💗

i love this book so much!! we have a sharp tongued lawyer and a cocky but charming f1 driver. the story and the plot were very interesting. i loved seeing the things going on the in the fmc's brain, and they actually felt very real. she was literally fighting her demons. it was so good watching her over come all that. and omg the mmc is sooooo charming. he was so witty i absolutely loved it. turbo is the real mvp.

i do watch f1 so it was very nice to read and understand how behind the scenes of a grand prix work. i literally finished this in a day.

First, I'd like to thank the author and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I honestly thought I would love this book, not just as an F1 fan but also as a paralegal. My two worlds merged into one? Sign me up! Unfortunately, I couldn’t get into the book as much as I'd have liked.

Although I didn’t love the book, there were a few aspects of the book that I did like. The plot is fun, making you root for Izzy and Marcus’ love story to work out. And then there’s the banter, which absolutely was the best part of the book. The constant back and forth between Izzy and Marcus was truly entertaining; it was like watching an extremely funny tennis match. And then there was Carmen, Izzy’s mom, and Luca, Marcus’ race engineer, who, although they are secondary characters, still happened to steal every scene they were in. You can always trust those two to knock a bit of sense into the MCs, which, trust me, you’ll want to happen often. Also, a shoutout to Turbo is needed for providing the best comedic relief.

To Rebekah’s credit, most aspects of the book that I couldn’t get behind were completely of my own fault. As a person who works in the legal profession, I spent the entire book internally yelling at the characters, especially Izzy, for so willingly and openly breaking their contracts with what seemed to be very little care or pushback. Also, the inaccuracies in the legal aspects of the book had me getting annoyed with Izzy’s character, which I must admit is my fault; I should not have expected a romance book to have accurate legal depictions. Additionally, I did expect the book to have more motorsport action in it; yet again, I can’t take it against Rebekah for making her romance novel more romance-centric.

Overall, this wasn’t a horrible book; it was sweet and fun, and I haven’t given up on Mary Rebekah yet. Although a few aspects could have been better, Rebekah did write a pretty good first book, and I have no doubt she’ll get better with more experience.

I went into this book wanting to love it—being from Indiana, racing is practically in my veins, especially in May! Turbo the dog instantly won me over with his adorable antics. But despite these promising elements, I struggled to get through the first half. The romance felt distant and hard to connect with. The only reason I didn’t give up was the final quarter, when the story finally picked up steam: the plot accelerated, and the characters became more interesting. Then there is, of course, Turbo the Goldendoodle. He stole the show, come on.

My biggest frustration was the repetition—Izzy and Marcus endlessly circle the same thoughts and insecurities, page after page. Rather than building tension, this constant internal monologue made the romance feel rushed. The first 60% dragged because of this, leaving me waiting for something to truly spark.

By the end, it was Izzy’s Mom, Carmen, and Turbo who left the biggest impression. Carmen’s phone calls provided much-needed comic relief, and Turbo’s chapter in the epilogue was genuinely a highlight—one of the most enjoyable moments in the entire book.

Overall, this wasn’t a terrible novel—it was just, unfortunately, a dull one. Readers who enjoy character-driven romances filled with introspection may find something to love here, but I craved more action and plot. Still, as a debut, it shows promise, and I’m genuinely curious to see how this author evolves. A solid first effort.

As a debut, Checkered Love had a lot of things working in its favor. 🏎️❤️
The Formula One-inspired setting immediately caught my attention and was probably my favorite part of the entire book. I always love seeing sports romances branch outside of the usual hockey and football world, and the racing atmosphere added something fresh and fun to the story.
There was also some genuinely good banter throughout the book, and I enjoyed the environmental advocacy elements woven into the plot. It gave the story an extra layer beyond just the romance. And of course, Turbo absolutely stole every scene. 🐾 If there's a pet in a romance, chances are I'm going to become emotionally attached immediately.
That being said, I never fully connected with the romance itself. The story held my attention, but there were sections that felt repetitive and slower than I wanted. I found myself wanting a little more depth from both the relationship development and some of the supporting characters.
I also felt like certain conflicts appeared very suddenly and wrapped up just as quickly, which left some emotional moments without the payoff I was hoping for.
Overall, this wasn't a bad read by any means. It was a solid debut with a unique sports setting, some fun moments, and enough to keep me reading until the end. I just didn't find myself completely invested in the characters or their love story.
And my fellow first-person POV lovers should know this is written in third person, which personally made it a little harder for me to fully connect with the characters.

A lawyer and a climate activist on opposite sides of an issue? That’s exactly the kind of setup that gets my attention. Add an enemies-to-lovers vibe and I was ready to love this book. ❤️

I liked both main characters and could understand why they were attracted to each other. The chemistry was there, and there were some genuinely sweet moments.
My biggest issue was the emotional payoff. I bought the attraction, but I didn’t always buy how invested they became in each other so quickly. The setup was strong, but the relationship often felt further along than what I was seeing on the page.

I also found the book repetitive at times. Certain thoughts, emotions, and observations were repeated so often that it slowed the story down for me. Later on, the dual POV made this even more noticeable, with some scenes and conversations feeling repeated rather than expanded.

And then there’s the heroine’s mother 😅. For a while she seemed to know absolutely everything her daughter was doing, thinking, and feeling. It became more funny than believable.

Overall, I liked the idea of this book more than the execution. The characters had potential, the premise was great, but I wanted less repetition and a stronger emotional payoff.

First of all, I want to point out that this isn't a 'bad' book, but rather one with potential.

*Checkered Love* has some really great aspects: a lawyer-versus-F1-driver dynamic, a delightful dog 🐶, an F1 theme, and a focus on a single race rather than an entire season. The conversations between Izzy and her mother were also enjoyable to read.

However, the issue lies in the story's repetitiveness. With "instant love," it makes sense for characters to find each other attractive right away and keep thinking about one another. But here, they were constantly thinking about each other—literally all the time. Every chapter felt like a monologue about one character's feelings and thoughts regarding the other.
The phone conversations between Izzy and her mother also revolved almost entirely around Marcus Laurent.
Additionally, the story began with Izzy disliking Marcus intensely, viewing him as arrogant and spoiled. So, I expected an "enemies-to-lovers" arc. But unfortunately... Izzy was charmed by him very quickly—too quickly, in my opinion.

Finally, I want to mention that the book got off to a strong start with the introduction of Izzy and Marcus; there was a lot of variety in that section. I also really enjoyed the epilogues featuring time jumps 🥰!

In short, it’s a book with a great concept; the execution falls a bit short, but it definitely has potential 😇☺️!

I genuinely tried to finished but by 50% of this book I have to call it quits. The summary is promising and everything I would want in a book. The writing of this book is simply put it bad. There is too much repetition of scenes and thoughts. It made the characters so bland I was ready to jump into the story myself and tell them off. I also did not understand why the author uses Carmen's name when in Izzy's point of view. That is her mom and she seems pretty close to her. I feel like it is unnatural to label her mom by her name. She should be called mom, mami, or some other language that Izzy would use. Honestly, at one point I was questioning if Carmen was the mom.

There were also several errors in the book plot wise. At one point, Izzy is laying on the bed but then the next paragraph she is on the desk. I double checked and there was no transition to move her there, so I was very confused.

Honestly, the only redeeming part of the book is the dog named Turbo and that is only because he's a dog and he is cute.

I really liked the sound of this book, unfortunately it didn't really work for me. I put this book down at 25% and decided not to continue.

It felt like the book started in the middle of the story, as if the two leads had more of a prior relationship than we were shown or told. Every interaction between them seemed as though it should have held more weight than it did, because they didn't actually speak to each other very much so context for why they acted the way they did was missing.

The biggest problem, for me, was the repetition. A lot of time was spent with characters having the same thoughts about themselves and each other, only to have this repeated in the next chapter with a tiny bit of updated context, and I found that incredibly frustrating to read. With better structure, this book could have really worked but I'm sad to say it didn't do it for me.

On the bright side, the dog was really cute and I did like the interactions between the two leads. Also the theme of an F1 driver championing the environment was a big plus point.

I’m rating this book 3.5 stars. I enjoyed the plot line and I liked both main characters so it felt like a cute read with a slow burning tension that laid the foundation for both of them to allow themselves to fall in love. I love Turbo!

Some of the narrative leading up to Izzy’s character flaws felt a bit repetitive, especially when conversing with Carmen so that had an impact on the overall rating score but I understood that it had to lead to Izzy’s breakthrough development. Marcus was a stable character throughout the book and I enjoyed the lawyer lingo that is heavily used throughout the book because it enlightens a major side of Izzy’s life without feeling overly technical or boring.

It’s a solid read, which is why a 3.5 star rating seems fair considering that there are no major happening events during the plot line, which did impact my reading time but I enjoyed it generally speaking.

I’ll admit that part of the reason I requested this one was the goldendoodle on the cover. Another part of the reason was that one of my besties in high school was obsessed with Formula One racing and Michael Schumacher (yes, I know I’m totally aging myself here) so passing this one up seemed like a crime.

For a debut novel, this one was cute!! I liked Izzy and Marcus together, and Turbo the goldendoodle as their quasi-matchmaker. I did feel like things got a bit bogged down in dialogue at times, and certain things and timelines were a little unclear. I also honestly found Izzy the boss babe lawyer a far more compelling character than Izzy the female main character in a romcom. Anytime she was faced with a legal challenge, she absolutely lit up! F1 fans might be wanting a bit more F1 content than what was on the page, but what was on the page was done well! Overall an enjoyable read.

My favorite parts are:
1. Character development for Isabella Vega (FMC). She was truly inspiring as a baddie, knowledgable, courageous, and very headstrong. It was nice to see how her character has a change of heart as the story progresses
2. Relationship between Isabella and Marcus (MMC). I loved the banter and you could literally feel the chemistry right off of the pages. I believe their characters were so well described and their relationship truly allowed the characters to grow/change their mindsets/beliefs.
3. Marcus's furry friend. Who doesn't love a dog companion!

Overall, I truly enjoyed this sports race car romance read. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a sports romance and/or likes racing in general.

i was really excited for this book. i am an avid formula one fan and the premise sounded like something i could enjoy. however, it fell flat for me in about 50 pages. there are so many just logistical inconsistencies as far as f1 itself is concerned. (i cannot talk about it without ranging into the spoilers)

and it is so repetitive. we don't get much of formula one action either — the pages we do get, the qualifying merges into the race day.

the romance itself wasn't anything that made me excited. i just didn't connect with the main characters at all. i also thought that this book could've benefited a lot from having a lot of side characters than the handful it offered.

turbo was the light of this novel.

Every once in a while, a book comes along that clicks from page one and this was absolutely one of those reads for me. The author's voice is what really sold me. It's sharp, engaging, and has an energy that pulled me right into the story and wouldn't let go. I found myself completely hooked, turning pages way faster than I intended to.

The racing world makes such a fantastic backdrop here, adding speed, glamour, and just the right amount of chaos to the story. But what really elevated this one for me was the care taken in developing the central relationship. Every beat feels earned and the level of detail in how the protagonists grow together is perfect. The dual points of view were the right choice too, giving readers a view inside both characters' heads and making every moment between them land meaningfully.

And can we talk about Turbo? Undoubtedly, the true star of the book! An absolute scene-stealer who had me grinning every time he showed up. Add in an ending that left me genuinely satisfied and smiling, and this one's an easy five stars. If you're into romance with high stakes, sharp wit, and a whole lot of heart, do yourself a favor and pick this one up!

For any Formula 1 fans, this book has the race track setting and a lot of environmental details I never thought about before reading it. I thought the meet cute scene with Turbo was adorable, too. I struggled with the first 40% of the book because it felt like both protagonists were stuck in their heads and had a lot of internal dialogue, like maybe more interactions with Carmen and Luca would have helped the pacing? But, the second half paced much better, and I liked the intelligence of Izzy and her driven personality. The complexity of her job and how good vs evil affects lawyers was well done as well— we need more lawyers like Izzy, who recognize when a win is no longer winning.

I love Formula One and will pretty much always pick up a Formula One romance, so I was really excited for Checkered Love. I loved the legal aspect and felt that it was really consistent throughout the story, and I enjoyed Izzy and Marcus and their banter. My sole reason for the 2.5⭐ rating is the lack of Formula One scenes. There was really only one proper Formula One scene in the whole book, and I just wanted so much more of the racing world. Had there been more Formula One throughout, this definitely would have been a higher-rated read for me.

I had high hopes for this book, but unfortunately, it fell a bit flat for me.

Izzy and Marcus spent too much time stuck in repetitive internal monologues, which made their emotional growth feel rushed rather than earned. Believing they were deeply in love after just one week was a stretch for me. I usually prefer romances with a stronger external plot and richer relationship dynamics, though readers who love pure character-driven, whirlwind romances might appreciate this more.

That said, Carmen was easily the highlight of the book—she was hilarious, sharp, and totally intuitive!

For someone who normally doesn’t like sports contemporaries, this book really surprised me with how much I loved it. Mary Rebekah has combined sharp wit with incredibly descriptive prose, I could practically smell the tires and the ink in the pens. Our main protagonist, Izzy, is the lawyer every little girl dreamed of becoming. Izzy and Marcus’s story hit all of the marks you want in a contemporary: good story, steamy romance, and an ending everyone is happy with. I really can’t wait to see more of what this author writes!

Overall, I liked this debut! It had great banter, and I liked the Formula One setting and the environmental subplot. I also liked the scenes with Turbo. I always enjoy having a pet in the story. I am a huge F1 fan and have slowly started reading F1 romances. Checkered Love is a good book, but there is barely any F1 racing.

It is pitched as a enemies to lovers, and it begins that way but the enemies fizzles out really quickly and the became a story of a romance that never really gave me butterflies.

I love an F1 romance, but this was not it. The story was hard to get into, there wasn't any chemistry between the MCs, and just couldn't find myself rooting for them. It got to the point where I was just there for the dog.

(Unrelated to the plot, the ARC format was also not reader friendly and made for an unfortunate distraction)

This book was okay. I rate this 3 stars because it felt like an average rating and it doesn’t mean that it’s a bad rating. There were some parts of the story that got me questioned because it was getting overwhelming on the characters and a bit boring as well. Overall, I still recommend the book if you like a sports romance book that involves racing cars.
