After dedicating decades to hunting monsters, 150-year-old vampire Maura has become an expert in her craft. But when a human woman is found dead under very suspicious circumstances, Maura is thrust into an investigation she is not prepared for.
As the death toll grows, the vamp soon realizes she’s in over her head; especially when the arrival of a dangerous hunter triggers long-forgotten memories of her dark history. Convinced that his presence in her territory is no coincidence, Maura must decide if he can be trusted as they unravel the intricate details of the case together.
Tormented by the demons of her past, Maura must confront corruption, deadly secrets, and forbidden desires as she fights for redemption and hunts a monster that threatens the very fate of her kind.
Spoiled Blood is a gritty urban fantasy set in a dark, atmospheric world, with fast-paced tension, pulse-pounding action, and edge-of-your-seat suspense that will leave you wanting more.
Fuelled by a healthy dose of weird, Isla has been writing stories since she could first put pen to paper. Drawn to the darker things in life, Isla relishes in gritty, atmospheric worlds, crafting novels filled with complex characters, high-stakes tension, and a hit of spice.
When Isla isn’t writing (or doesn’t have her nose in a book), she spends her time baking and watching old reruns of Midsomer Murders, Buffy, and anything that packs a punch.
She lives in rural Canada with her husband and their sassy cat, Lola.

Super fun read. Isla created a unique way to portray this world and the characters in it.
Maura, our FMC is a strong and confident investigator. Tasked with investigating disappearances and murders happening. Joining forces with an unexpected MMC, Ilie. The banter between these two is refreshing. It was basically like reading a noir detective mystery.
The world building could use a little more detail, just to be clear on where and when things are happening, but otherwise, it was pretty well captured.
The pacing was great. Loved that the action picked up towards the end, which would be expected in a story like this one.
And the twists and turns that this took was great.
I would really like to see a story that maybe talks more about Ilie and his past?
Set in a dark political dystopia filled with vampires, humans and shifters, this felt like Gotham City with fangs. The atmosphere was bleak, the mystery kept me guessing, and while the romance wasn’t the main focus, the slow burn added just the right amount of tension.
The last 10% of this book was absolutely unhinged and I loved every second of it.
After simmering for most of the story, our vampire Maura finally unleashes her rage and the result is a satisfyingly bloody finale that made the slower sections worth pushing through.
Marketed as a standalone, but there are definitely a few threads left hanging that I’d happily follow into future books.
🦇 Vampire x Hunter 🔥 Female Rage 🗡️ Dystopian Fantasy ❤️ Slow Burn Romance
I am not gaga over the vampire genre. Oh, I’ve seen Interview with the Vampire and the Twilight movies and enjoyed them very much, but I don’t generally seek out the genre. In fact, I had never read vampire fiction—not even anything by the queen of the genre herself, Anne Rice.
However, my child suggested I read Spoiled Blood by Isla Storm. I hemmed and hawed, but said child pointed out that, above all else, it was a murder mystery—and I do love a good murder mystery.
Quite frankly, I was very impressed.
The pacing is fast, the mystery is solid and well thought out, and there are enough plot twists to keep you guessing right until the end. What I particularly liked was that the author never lets you forget that this is a mystery set in a vampire world. The novel is peppered with just enough information about that world to keep you curious and draw you further into it, without requiring you to suspend all reason.
In this novel, vampires run the world, while humans are allowed to inhabit it alongside them. It is an intriguing premise, and Storm does a good job of making this unusual world feel believable. The main character, Maura, was fascinating, and by the end I found myself wanting to know much more about this woman and her history.
For someone who doesn’t normally read vampire fiction, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Spoiled Blood is an impressive debut novel, and I’ll definitely be interested to see what Isla Storm writes next.
This book was so fun! It was like a thriller and a fantasy mixed together and I enjoyed it! I could see the scenes play out in my head as if it was a movie, and I enjoyed how descriptive the story was!
You get thrown right into the action from page 1 which I really enjoyed, and then learning about the world and politics. I loved the different elements of creatures we got in this book, the vampires being my favourite.
The only reason I rated it a bit down was it started to slow down for me around the 40-60% mark but then quickly picked up. I loved the last 5 chapters as it was filled with action and twists! I would recommend this to anyone who’s a thriller and/or fantasy lover, and looking for an easy fast paced story!
I would love to see where this world goes next and get more from these characters. Though this was a completed story, I could totally see this being turned into a series!
Once again, thank you so much to the author for the ARC!
I liked this, it was unique with being a kind of murder mystery fantasy. I do wish the world and magic was flushed out a little more, I had trouble understanding the layout of the different “realms”, they just blended together for me. I was really not liking Maura but she redeemed herself in the end. The pacing was really nice and the end of chapters made you want to keep reading. I would read more of this world! Especially Ilie!

Do you ever read a book that just gives you ennui? That was the book for me because it was giving me Angel vibes with Maura's dedication to solving crime and redeeming herself for past crimes. I was incredibly behind in my schedule, so I read this book much more slowly than I wanted, but the way that Storm wrote this book made it feel like you were taking a break between weekly episodes, and you have to get to the next one before you learn what happens next.
The narrative flows smoothly from start to finish as we collect the pieces of the puzzle Maura is trying to put together along with her. However, Storm's style allowed the action to interweave with the emotional turmoil that Maura was experiencing, so there were peaks and valleys. It was just the right balance as I was hooked throughout the course of the book. Actually, the only real problem I had with the writing was that the phrase "dropped to my ass" was used a bit too much throughout the text.
I did enjoy the cast of characters, which was diverse in their role in the dystopian landscape of humans and vampires. I do wish that there had been a little more exploration of the relationship between Maura, Boris, and Zaff. The found family dynamics and connection between them were clear, but felt a bit unexplored.
I also liked how there were elements of romance throughout the book, but Storm's focus was on the world-building and mystery aspects of the story. Maura was such a strong character, and while finding love is great even from the first page, it felt unrealistic that she would become a romantic.
The way that the mystery was tied together was really well done. At about the 50% mark, I began to have suspicions about who was involved, which proved to be correct, but the plot twists continued to occur right until the very end. I do hope that with this ending, there will be more books in the series.
If you enjoy dystopian and murder mystery books with dashes of the supernatural and a pinch of romance, I would highly recommend this book. It will send you back to the late 1990s and early 2000s when these genres were popular, but with darker elements for a more mature audience. Storm has created a fabulously morally grey character in Maura, and you will be rooting for her from the very start.

Definitely well-paced and gritty. As someone who enjoys murder mysteries and reads them on occasion, as well as being a huge fan of vampire-related media, the crossing of the two is just a beautiful blend I didn't think I needed, but damn, is it good. Maura is a very intense woman who definitely knows her worth in the world, but isn't afraid to show strength in her vulnerabilities, which, despite all the cussing and her interesting choice of language, made me come to like her a lot by the end.
What would definitely push it to a five-star for me is to work on developing smaller characters, such as Boris and Zaff, and maybe even delve a little deeper into Silas' character, too. I feel like there was a missed opportunity to really give B and Z, in particular, more personality, especially as they are essential to the team and would have provided a cool extra dynamic that is much needed; I found it hard to tell Z and B apart at times, as their mannerisms and dialogue were super similar. I think it would have been a nice balance to the intensity that is Maura's character. Also, I was a little unsure about who/what Maura and co. worked with as far as their wider purpose. Are they an independent group investigating cases?
This is a great read for anyone who's looking to 'sink their teeth' into something a little different within the paranormal realm.

Spoiled Blood was gritty! Maura spends her nights hunting the monsters no one else can stop. When a young woman is found dead in the middle of a vampire transition, what starts as a murder investigation turns into something much bigger and pulls Maura into a web of secrets and power plays that hit way too close to home for her.
Maura is exactly the kind of FMC I love. She’s absolutely terrifying when she needs to be, but underneath all of that is someone with a lot of guilt and grief that it practically bleeds off the page. She’s been surviving for so long that she doesn’t really know how to do anything else, and seeing how she confronts everything she’s been running from was rough. I am a sucker for two emotionally damaged people who absolutely do not want to trust each other and then somehow become the person the other needs most. The tension between Maura and Ilie was so good. Not just the romantic tension, but the constant questioning of motives and the reluctant vulnerability despite desperately trying not to open up to one another. I ate that up. Nom! Nom!
The world-building was really good and the mystery had me second-guessing everything. Every answer seemed to create three more questions, and I loved how all the pieces eventually came together. I'm going to need the next book immediately because I am not okay after that ending!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Isla Storm wrote her characters with a lot of depth, secrets, and senses of humour. Her main female character, Maura, is what I'd call a 'cleaner' - a person who investigates crimes, and eliminates the most evil and degenerate of their dystopian world. Maura is a very complex vampire, and she has many numerous secrets which she would rather remain hidden. She also doesn't even recall any memories prior to being turned into a vampire over 150 year earlier.
Ilie, a celestial and vampire hunter, arrives on the scene with the purpose of eliminating Maura, but as they interact, realises he can't do it. It is their interaction which at times had me laughing with the amount of sarcasm exchanged between them, as well as with those around them.
Besides her character development, Storm has created a rich and detailed backdrop to the dystopian world Maura & Ilie are living in. The twists and turns of the overall story, the investigation of crimes against both the humans and the vampires, and an epic battle at the end of the book make it worth reading. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoy vampires, crime, murder, power-struggles, and epic battles between good and evil.
Spoiled Blood by Isla Storm was such an addictive and action-packed read! From page one, the story throws you straight into the chaos, and I was immediately hooked by the dark atmosphere, intense pacing, and cinematic feel of the writing. I could vividly picture every scene playing out like a movie in my head.
One of my favorite parts was the worldbuilding. The politics, creatures, and darker fantasy elements made the world feel alive and immersive, especially the vampires. While there were moments where I felt slightly overwhelmed trying to piece together all the details at first, I found myself completely invested once everything started coming together. The final chapters especially were incredible — full of twists, action, and surprises that kept me flying through the pages.
The characters felt real, flawed, and compelling, and I already want more from Maura, Ilie, Boris, Zayne, and the rest of the crew. This was a fun, fast-paced fantasy thriller with great tension, memorable characters, and a world I’d gladly return to. Definitely a 5-star read for me!
4.5 ⭐️ Received an ARC and I am providing my honest review
I loved this story. The FMC Maura reminded me so much of Selene from Underworld in her personality. Dark bossy femme. This is a vampire detective story. I love that the plot stayed consistent. You only got enough information about Maura's past to move the plot forward and tell you why she is the way she is.
There is a enemies to lovers slow burn. I usually hate this trope, but I think there was a good amount of yearning and while the current storyline was wrapped well, there is an opening in the way this story ends for it to be a series to be loved.
I loved that everything had a reason for being mentioned. I suspected the main villian but it bounced a couple times with new evidence. Thinking back, if I thought hard enough, it may have been obvious once a particular event was mentioned, but the beauty is I didn't connect that dot and got to enjoy the story more.
Overall, a great read. Underworld is one of my favorite vamp series and this could've fit right in!
I loved discovering and stepping into this dystopian world that was filled with creatures that are known for being 'monsters'... added mystery and thrill, and this book was great! Unique in its factors and aspects that lent it to be compelling and intriguing. I found myself liking the female main character, Maura. There were so many interesting facets within this book that leave me wanting to know more, with characters as well as where the story goes! The main event of the story did wrap up towards the end, however there were other things through the book that leads to open ends that could be further explored in a next book- and I am hoping for it to be the case! I enjoyed this read and getting to know this world.
I really enjoyed this story. Maura is a bada$$ main character. I love her strength, intelligence, and her characters emotional growth. This story wascreative and I felt like there was a possibility for it to have been a 5 star read. I felt the MMC did not have enough engagement and wanted more from him. I love Maura being a completely independent, strong character but I hoped for more support or possibility of emotional connection for her.
The ending really makes me hope for a book two. So many peices set up for a good second book. If there is a second book I would definitely consider it for my TBR.
Action-packed from the very start! I loved this book: the characters feel so real and compelling, the plot is non-stop, and I wanted to dive into the world and learn as much as I could about it. The world building is really awesome—it's a dark world that feels very tangible and alive. I didn't see the ending coming at all and already want more of Maura, Ilie, Boris, and the rest of the crew (special shoutout to Zayne!).
A very fun, engaging, and addicting read from start to finish. Five stars!
Spoiled Blood had a good plot and great pacing that kept me continuously turning pages, however I was rather bored at times. From the beginning the story just jumps right in and I get confused when that happens. I found myself confused as to the world, politics, and characters. I kept reading though and I did enjoy the story I just feel it could have been better executed. Thank you so much for the early copy to BookSirens and Isla Storm. My rating is 3.4 ⭐️
First, thank you for allowing me to read this book. I was so eager to start, and as soon as I did, I couldn’t put the book down. I quickly became invested in the story, and the FMC has such a character growth throughout, that I was just rooting for her all the way.
This was a very unique story, and I don’t think there is anything out there that is like it! The crime solving duo, the fantasy, and the touch of romance?? It just was so very refreshing!
I can’t wait to see where this story goes. I truly think this could be something big. Again, thank you!
The description of this book lured me in. However the book itself missed the mark. In the start, we are to be convinced that Maura is good at being a detective, when in reality she is a brute. We also get snippets into her thoughts where they trail off without explanation
I didnt feel that characters were very developed.
I felt alot of the points were repeated. We were told instead of shown.
Great mix of thriller, mystery, detective vibes, and fantasy. The vampire aspect was interesting as well as the dynamic between the MFC and MMC. While there was a lot of tension and banter, it was closed door with really only one scene described. A lot of the F word with some other language here and there.
I loved the crime solving mixed with the fantasy aspect and hope to see more. I was happy to take part as an ARC reader.

Spoiled Blood by Isla Storm was an amazing read! Action packed from the very beginning. When I think of a Paranormal Thriller this is EXACTLY what I’m looking for. I definitely recommend reading this book and can not wait for the next book in the series.

This was a really fun book, and I absolutely enjoyed it. The characters and the world are really well developed. It started a bit slow for me, I struggled to get hooked in the first 40% or so but I am glad I stuck with it.
This was a fun murder mystery with vampires. I enjoyed the world building and twists. It hooked me from the beginning and the ending is didn't feel rushed.

As non fantasy reader, I was apprehensive when a friend recommended Spoiled Blood. Now I’m looking forward to reading the 2nd book. I was immediately hooked on the first page. Great characters and action packed. Would definitely recommend Spoiled Blood 🩸
