Doug Chambers doesn't have any friends, but he is OK with that. He'd rather everyone just leave him alone to work on his science projects and to care for his menagerie of animals locked up in cages. He is the typical Middle School nerd. About to be clobbered by the school bully, Doug reinforces his nerdiness when a new student, a girl, steps in and sticks up for him. Doug learns that Jai-Ling is from Taiwan and will only be in New York for a few months. A friendship quickly evolves between them and Doug learns how to be a friend to Jai-Ling. But what will happen when Jai-Ling's true and unfortunate reason for visiting is revealed? Will Doug be brave enough to face what's to come? The Tadpole and the Butterfly is a tale about growing up, finding courage, and the power of friendship.
