If someone tells you the word “cryptid,” you might not know what it means. But, if that same someone asks you about Bigfoot, Yeti, the Jersey Devil, Chupacabra or the Loch Ness Monster, you are bound to know at least something about these creatures, also known as cryptids. When talking about cryptids, i.e. animals whose existence has not been proven, but whose existence is adorned by numerous stories dating back hundreds of years ago, about their other-worldly nature, one cannot avoid the mystery as well as the appeal that these creatures have. While some are said to have a blood-thirsty nature, like for example the stories surrounding the Black Shuck (a dark haired Hellhound who attacks on a dark and stormy night with piercing red eyes and a howl to make your blood run cold), the goat-sucker better known as Chupacabra or even the mysterious invertebrate ruling the underground passages of the Gobi desert, by the name of the Mongolian Death Worm. On the other hand, there are also cryptids whose main purpose in life is not to attack people, but actually to hide from them and keep a low profile, as they have managed to do for centuries. Some of them include the Loch Ness Monster (a gentle, solitary creature, thought to be many things, even a plesiosaur, referred to by many by the sweet nickname Nessie), Bigfoot (also known as Sasquatch) or Yeti, who are creatures of a similar nature, only inhabiting different places. You might also find it interesting that some cryptids have actually been proven to exist, as it is the case of the Kraken, a horrifying, once thought to be mythical monster, who is known today as the giant squid. So, if you feel like enveloping yourself with the mysterious world beyond what the mere human eye can see, read this book and allow the strange and almost fantastical enigma that is cryptozoology to broaden your horizons and make you see the world through completely different eyes.
