I know there are a lot of women who enjoy an older man when it comes to romance, myself included. So that’s one trope that I really enjoy, and this one totally hit the spot.
The author brings in complex characters that have a long history. Complex, touching, and even a bit obsessive in certain areas. But she also builds this intense connection between the two of them that really entangles you in the story.
The author does not shy away from intense topics related to first responders, particularly police dispatch and response. Several scenes could be intense for certain readers. But it does play into the story, particularly the strength and connection of our characters.
There were a few areas of repetition and errors in the book copy that I received. But overall, Restraint was a bit intense in spots. Wonderfully hot as the main characters fought against the tide and lost. The story is deep, emotional, steamy, and you continually cheer them on to figure it all out.
I will for sure read this author again. Thoroughly enjoyed her writing!

This book is HEAVY. I love it, understand, and have empathy for dispatchers. I was a dispatcher and it definitely takes a dedicated, strong person. You bring home calls, victims, and losses even when you try not to let work mix with home life.
I was skeptical at first, thinking this girl is psycho and trying to make "love" happen between the officer (August) she met as a child and herself (Florence). Florence happened to "bump" into August to get back into his life, but it worked out. Miranda Levi does a phenomenal job at creating a love story with horrific 911 phone calls, personal development, and tarot readings.
I really loved that the split between August and Florence lasted longer than the typical day or two that I read in other novels. Both had to grow and realize what they want/need before getting back together.

Spicy and so fun!
Restraint is an age gap romance that sets the stage for everything you want in a spicy read. The introduction of Florence and August is delicious, and reading about them dance around each other - fighting something neither can resist- makes the ending so much more satisfying. If you like happy ending forbidden love stories, this one is fun!

Hooked Like a Great Limited Series
My wife and I love binge watching six to eight episode limited series, especially mysteries that grab us within the first few seconds and keep us guessing until the final moments. That is probably why this book was such a welcome surprise.
I was hooked almost immediately. What really worked for me was how each chapter felt like another episode. The movement through different moments in time gave the story a classic storytelling quality while revealing just enough to keep me reading. I kept thinking I had figured out where everything was going, only to have another detail change my expectations.
The tension between the characters also builds naturally. Small moments, conversations, and decisions carry enough weight to make you want to know what happens next without rushing the story.
I read many books, but few make me immediately imagine the screen adaptation. This one did. I hope someone eventually turns it into a limited series because I would definitely binge watch it.

This is my first book by Miranda Levi and I really enjoyed it. The story was good and gave me lots of feels. Florence came across a little stalky and August a little spineless, but I loved them together. I also loved the relationships they both had with Lilly and Ruth.
My one big bugbear was the gas station chapter, it was a great concept but edited with poor continuity. It was quite clearly stated that there were 2 assailants, but in the end there was only one. Also, Florence works out who the caller is (and confirms it) only to be surprised, approximately 2 pages later, by finding out the caller’s identity.

This story had the back bones of a truly amazing story, I found myself easily getting lost in the plot. I understand I read a pre release copy of this story, and I understand it has not yet gone through its final editing stages but I had some issues with the plot preventing me from saying this is the best book ever. With a little tweaking this could really be something special. I have never read a character like Florence before and i really enjoyed her being a 911 dispatcher!

Florence is a 911 dispatcher and August is the chief of police. Before they met in the world of work, they had a very hot and no names night.
Now they try and stay away from each other, its not the age gap that’s the problem his daughter is Florence’s room mate.
Secret kisses, his control, family . Just ups the heat.
Her calmness and his control, drama and brilliant characters.

An engrossing and enjoyable read. If you like psychological thrillers with suspense, secrets and unexpected twists, I would definitely recommend giving this one a try. Kept me guessing right to the end.

Wasn't sure what I was reading at first
Interesting book. Not my normal topic and it's episodic layout is different with its 911 focus. It seems the author has background in that world which makes it feel real. .

August 23, 2026DNF 32% it was way too metaphorical. like every sentence was trying to be deep 😭 but the plot seems interesting and fun but i was just too annoyed about it.

This is a well written story that I enjoyed reading. It has great characters and interesting storyline.
