Being a real witch in Salem isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Just ask Piper Knight, who fled the East Coast for the West Coast after graduation—grand plans of being a “normal” naturalist taking up residence in her head—only to have to return to her hometown if she wants to save her grandmother’s failing boutique hotel, the Salemdipity. As a descendent of one of the original women accused of being a witch during the trials hundreds of years ago, Piper is determined to keep her grandmother’s legacy alive. Unfortunately, the old witch might be going a little batty. Since Piper’s parents refuse to help—they’re threatening to lock up Wanda Alden and throw away the key if she causes one more public incident—that means Piper is on her own. She’s a witch, so everything should be okay. Or maybe that’s just witchful thinking. Jasper Cage grew up in Salem hating witch stories. There are other paranormals in the world after all, thank you very much. Why should witches get all the attention? As a half-vampire—he’d much prefer being a whole one but he didn’t get a say in the matter—he has attitude to spare. That’s why, when he collides with Piper over a dead body, things immediately come to a head. Jasper wants to solve the case on his own. He actually knew the dead woman. He’s not some upstart who purposely left town only to return and try to steal his thunder. Since the body was found on her property, Piper refuses to be cut out of the investigation. It’s not going to be easy for either of them. Between a haunted hotel, an eccentric bar clientele, and a city that hides real magic behind tours and kitschy drinks, Piper and Jasper are about to do something extraordinary. That is if they both survive to tell the tale. Welcome to Salem, where the witches, ghosts, and vampires are in charge. Just don’t tell the DDA.
Review of audiobook for Hotel Hex, since the audiobook came out before the ebook and I was impatient. This is the first book in a new series, it's still early in the story, but it seems like a promising start. The beginnings of a potential romance that, because I've read many books by this author, I know will grow over the next few books or so. I actually really like this narrator as well, she also narrated a bunch of other books by this author, initially I was unsure about the narrator but she has grown on me. This series takes place in Salem,MA, which I love.
Hotel Hex is a great beginning for Lily Harper Hart new series Salemdipity Inn. You have a chain smoking ,bourbon drinking Grammy living in a dilapidated ghost filled Hotel in Salem (yes that Salem). Piper her witchy granddaughter moves across the country to help her cantancorius Grammy bring the Salemdipity up to code. Unfortunately, there are alot of people who would like the property to be condemned and auctioned off to the highest bidder, including Pipers own mother who may have hexed Pipers memories and powers. This leads to an interesting story which has murder, vampires and of course match making. This is a good fall read so grab a pumpkin spice latte ( sorry not sorry Jasper) and enjoy!
I am looking forward to finding how this story arc develops. We have a good list of main characters and an interesting set of anti-heroes in two parents. As Piper is introduced she almost seems hard to understand but when we find out there may have been a spell on her, the fog lifting shows a delightful person, “warts” and all. Good chemistry that can become a good partnership?
I loved the premise and new location for this series! Hoping it continues to be great. I liked the new characters and think they should be good. I just worry a bit the males and some are getting repetitive. Crazy granny who drinks and smokes pot. Been there, read that. Supporting characters deserve a bit more development.
Really enjoyed the start of this series. Can’t wait for the next book. It’s going to be fun to watch Piper and Jasper’s relationship progress. Love the setting and the underlying mystery should provide a lot of intrigue. Definitely recommend.
Wasn't sure I would like this one, it always takes me a couple books to get the new "groove". However I read it very quickly and realized belatedly I was already more than half way through the book, then 82% through the book. I really liked it. The characters are great.
The characters are lively and fun to be with. Lily Harper Hart can not write anything bad. The story is amazing. I can't wait for next book. ******** 1000 STARS
Great start to the series. Humor, danger and family that drives you crazy. Couldn't put the book down. Looking forward to the next book. Love this author.
