Women are being brutally murdered in New Orleans. Their bodies, wrist cut, dumped in different locations inside the fabled French Quarter. The murderer gains the confidence of the young women through lies and deception coaxing them to his expensive French Quarter apartment. He laces their drinks with a drug that has never been seen by forensic experts, although the drug is similar to another chemical, succinylcholine chloride, a powerful muscle relaxant which is used by anesthesiologist during surgery to immobilize surgery patients. While the murder victims remain conscious and fully aware of what is happening to them they are unable to move.. Their bodies are completely paralyzed while they are raped and their wrist cut. Veteran New Orleans cop, Mason Thibodaux, follows the killers trail full circle, from the New Orleans French Quarter, to the bayous of south Louisiana, the Mississippi gulf coast, and back again to the French Quarter. The pursuit takes several unusual twist and turns and leaves the old cop with doubts about his own survival.
This was an entertaining book but I couldn't figure out the time period the author was using. There seems to be no mention of cell phones or video surveillance equipment being used in the entire book. It was as if the author just left out all technology that would have solved this mystery sooner. I actually thought this book was set somewhere in the 80s but then a movie that was not released until 2012 was mentioned in the book. The end finally tells you the year is 2006. Having said that I still really enjoyed the book and thought it was well written and a good story
