If I had the patience to actually get through this slop, I’d rated it a negative 5. I’m not one to throw stones blind (that’s def not a saying lol), so let’s just say I didn’t vibe with the writing style. It’s confusing, weird phrasings, the rhythm is off because every sentence is written. Like. This. Not good. Not well. Something else.
I wanted to love this so much. I need more scifi horror in my life and when I saw this pop up I was so excited. Unfortunately, the first half of this book lets it down massively. I almost DNF'd it to be completely honest, but I didn't, I read a review and someone else said that the second half gets a lot better so I stuck it out. I'm glad that I did, but ultimately didn't love it like I'd hoped.
The writing style in the first half of this book is...interesting. It's written incredibly strange, and the sentence structure really didn't do it for me at all. It's very segmented and stilted, there's no flow whatsoever, and I don't know if this is a stylistic choice, or something else, but it almost lost a reader. The story is an interesting one and it gets a lot better in the second half, so I'm not sure if there was an editing axe that cut through a lot of the beginning or whether Vale was attempting to set a certain atmosphere, but yeah, I feel like it does more of a disservice to the story than anything else.
The story is an intriguing one and I was left guessing at what the outcome would be, once I settled into the second half, I blazed through the story and couldn't help but wish the entire thing had the vibes that the latter half did. By that stage I felt very out of the story, and none of the creepy scenes held much weight or impact for me which was a shame because the visuals were great.
I don't want to say too much about this because it's only short, I do hope that it can potentially hit another round of editing and perhaps a rewrite of the first half because this book deserves a massive chance as the premise is so interesting!
For fans of Event Horizon, Together to the End is about a recovery team sent to retrieve a relic in an abandoned spaceship.
The story is fun, the prose was fitting, especially the dialogue, and we are given a lovely and deadly bunch of main characters and some action that shows how ruthless the crew can be. Although it didn't blow me away, and I must admit that I saw the ending coming, the whole "crew meets crazy things in a derelict spaceship" aspect of the plot is one I will enjoy every time.
Give this a try if you enjoy the idea of tough super soldiers finding something that makes even them squeamish.
I love space horror and this reminds me of the book Paradise -1 about an evil AI. Though this book is a lot shorter.
The writing was a bit choppy until chapter 4 where it smoothed out a lot. I wonder if the author maybe adjusted a 40k novel. Though I'm not entirely sure about 40k there were a few instances in the beginning that made me tilt my head.
Either way it was a fun read, and thank you for allowing me to review this!
If Event Horizon and Hellraiser had an abomination baby together, it would be this novella. Unsettling, disturbing and dark, some passages are extremely creepy, and being such a short book, it’s a fast read. Despite the low page count, the characters are well developed and the setting is detailed. The writing is atmospheric, so it’s impossible not to picture the creepy, creepy Harrow. I’m not a huge fan of cosmic horror, but the way it’s shown here is manageable. The dread creeps slowly, until I was screaming at the characters to run, run, ruuuun. The plot is perfect, there isn’t a wasted word. For those who think you need tons of pages to write an engrossing novel, this one shows it’s not the case. I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, NetGalley/K.S Vale.
A very cool premise with a somewhat choppy execution. Some stories work as novellas, but I fear this premise would have been better executed had it been longer. The writing was also weird and stilted at times, especially at the beginning, which was awkward to read.
The atmosphere was creepy and is easy to imagine cinematically. However, there were several central characters, and given the short length it was hard to differentiate any of them. I understand it is hard to develop characters too much depth in a novella, but I think even limiting the core team would have made it easier to understand the players here.
The world-building was unique, and I liked the elements of the automatic drug-injection to support their operations. The reveal and ending was also well-done.
Overall an interesting read. Thank you to K. S. Vale & NetGalley for the ARC!
This is the kind of story that creeps up on you slowly and then suddenly has you completely hooked.
Together to the End starts with a simple recovery mission but quickly turns into something far more unsettling as the team ventures deeper into the abandoned ship. The tension builds through eerie recordings, failing systems, and the unsettling sense that the ship itself is holding onto memories that don’t want to stay buried. It’s claustrophobic, intense, and filled with that lingering dread that makes you question what’s real right along with the characters.
If you like space horror that messes with your head, this one is definitely worth picking up.
Cold... Isolated... Watching... Together to the End wastes no time turning a routine mission into a nightmare where nothing can be trusted—not the ship, not the systems, not even memory itself. Every corridor feels tighter, every discovery more disturbing, as the crew realizes they aren’t alone with the past they’ve stepped into. The horror here isn’t just what’s lurking in the dark—it’s what’s happening inside their minds. Sharp and unsettling this story is a quick but haunting descent into cosmic dread that will leave you uneasy long after it’s over.

A horror book taking place on a space ship. The atmosphere in this makes everything seem hopeless. This was a unique and fun short story. Thank you to NetGalley and K. S. Vale for the opportunity to read this book early in return for my honest review.
Opens with an Event Horizon vibe. Team of mercinaries set upon a ship to retrieve a treasure for their ruthless overlord. This is a fast-paced scifi-horror and it hits all the marks for me. I couldn't put it down! Thank-you, K. S. Vale, for this complimentary copy. Opinions expressed are entirely my own.
