"Alone does not necessarily mean lonely." ―Lettisia Gianti
A Letter to the Past). Ia mengingat bagaimana seorang pria mengajaknya berkenalan di suatu kafe (The Right Time) atau saat seorang pria memberikannya hadiah The Tiny Books of Tiny Stories dari Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Smell of Nostalgia).
See A Better Day, Laughs and Happiness, A Story).
Kita dibawa pada pengaruh sabda Bill Waterson yang dikutipnya di buku ini: "Rainy days should be spent at home with a cup of tea and a good book".
Ia menulis: Losing myself into the music is like the best feeling ever. Like for certain amount of time, I could at least forget all the problems in the world. Closing my eyes evaporated into the world of the music. Thinking about nothing but the melody. I love how music has that power to revive some events of the past. Like movie with soundtrack, one by one, every scene starting to come back into vision.
Itu sebabnya kita akan cukup sering menemukan judul-judul lagu, seperti There Was You dari The Beatles (A Letter to Mr. Spaceman), Flights to the Sea dari Graham Coxon (Flights to the Sea), Sweet Song dari Blur (Flights to the Sea), You and Me Song dari The Wannadies (You and Me Song), See A Better Day dari Graham Coxon (See A Better Day), Hello It's Me dari Todd Rundgren (A Story), dst.
Untuk tujuan pembentukan momen manis dan situasi romantis itu, beberapa judul lagu bahkan dibuat sama dengan judul cerita (Flight to the Sea dan You and Me Song).
Two quotes about my first love story in this book:
It began with: "Sometimes you meet a person and you just click-you're comfortable with them, like you've known them your whole life, and you don't have to pretend to be anyone or anything." - page 16
And ended up with: "But now, things are different. We turned into strangers." - page 20.
Lately, I came across Naela Ali’s instagram account (her username is @naelaali) quite often, because apparently some of my followings are her followers. So I kind of check her feeds every now and then because it is decent, clean, and I love the tone of her pictures. Her artworks are also great. Based on those stalking activities, I found out that recently she just published a short story collection. It was originally self-published, but this year, a major publisher republished it.
Just like other published books by Kepustakaan Populer Gramedia’s POP, Stories for Rainy Days is aesthetically pleasing, and is filled with beautiful watercolor illustrations by the author herself. Its small size reminded me of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Tiny Book of Tiny Stories (it was mentioned a few times, so I think this book is probably inspired by them).
The thing is, I didn’t really find the stories inside fascinating—not that i did not like it, because some of them can resonate with me. I know that they are probably based on the author’s personal experiences, and stories about life (and love) usually pique my interest, but it just felt too personal that I felt like merely peeking through someone’s diary. Beside, I think they are a little bit Tumblr-ish (if that makes sense). That’s why I only gave 2 stars for the stories.
It was an entertaining read nonetheless, I enjoyed the book and had a good time reading it. My favorite was the pilot story, where she wrote the letter for Mr. Spaceman, especially when she wished him well :”) Oh, and there’s an illustration of Clementine and Joel, which came from my favorite movie (so that’s a plus), and I also love the musical references. For those, this book just earned another star, hence, 3/5 stars it is!
Anyway, I did not buy it because earlier today I spent quite a loooong time in the bookstore that I did not realize I was already on the last page hehe >.< BUT if I did, of course I would not regret it, because Stories for Rainy Days is one of those books that will sit prettily among other books in your bookshelf! :D

"I realized that life is all about letting go - letting go our own egos that we are willing to make certaim amount of efforts and energy to take the risks and accept the good or bad circumstances that might happen for the one we love
Letting go also means that sometimes, no matter how much you thought you've put efforts into it, certain things are just not meant to be
But then again, "In the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make". If it's means to be, things will be just great..eventually" (Pages 195)
Synopsis: It was a rainy day, with a hot darjeeling tea, warm striped blanket and polka dot socks. One perfect moment to read stories for cats.
Review: Stories for Rainy Days is a collection of stories by Naela Ali. If you are familiar with Naela Ali then you must've known that a book with the same title had been self-published by her before. I'm not sure if the self-published version was different than this one since I didn't read that one. By the way, if you are not familiar with Naela Ali, she is an illustrator based in Jakarta with a penchant for writing and illustrating with watercolor as her tool. As the description implies this book is written and illustrated fully by herself.
The stories are all in English, some are a couple of pages long and some are only a page long. Starting into this book I didn't have a high expectation since I don't really read many short story collections and the ones I've read were either good or just fine. Among the other short story collections I've read this book definitely ranked in the top. The stories inside this book varies, mostly about love and life (even though there's random stories in here like the ones about a cat and a cactus). Some of my favorite stories from this book are: Lucky, Conversations and See a Better Day (not exactly in that order).
She was waiting for him to come. Waiting with hopes and expectations. But that was the kind of waiting that has no anger. Waiting with pleasure for the arrival of the loved one. -taken from Waiting.
I need to remind myself that I don't have to write review of every book that I read. Especially this one. Well, this still considered as a review, just not an in-depth one.
I noticed (and followed) Naela Ali for her artworks. Her watercolor illustration to be exact. When her self-published book published by a big publisher (in hardcover!) I knew that I will buy it... I did, when it was on a book sale. And, oh God, how I am not regretting I didn't buy it in normal price. This book is.... well, let's just agree that Naela Ali's illustrations are so beautiful.
That's that. I hope that everyone who reads this review have an amazing weekend and do not forget that your love to your partner (and vice versa), was not the only great thing that happened in your life. Give yourself a pat for going through life this far. You are special and amazing just the way you are, with or without your lover. You go, you!
Not really a big problem for me, tho.
The size help to finished it in one-sitting. Read it on my way home from work. For the most part, I felt that the stories like a continuation from the previous story. But suddenly, it's not. Its kinda threw me of the track. I get why people would love this book. Its sweet. Luckily I read Love is... by Puuung first, so it didn't get me a cavity for my teeth because its sweetness. But there are also bitterness when the girl got her heart break. It repeated in half of the book.
Naela also crafty when baring her feeling and put it into words. Like this one.
That solitary moment you have at a crowded place, when nothing else matters, only you and your book. That is bliss.
I personally love this edition (hardcover with minimalist cover design and the cat illustration is my favorite). Stories for Rainy Days comes with deeper love story along with those hipster (or not so hipster) songs mentioned at some pages (maybe for some people it is uneasy because they have to listen it first if they're really want to know) yet some pages didn't change from the first edition. The illustrations also become more elegant and mature. A tiny book of tiny stories by Joseph Gordon-Levitt got mentioned in this book which give me a hint that Naela writes this book inspired by it (her favorite and mine too) Overall this book is a type of light reading that you can enjoy with your favorite snacks.
"Love is a funny thing, you know, you felt that it was so real and you thought you would die to live without that certain person, but then one day, you woke up feeling nothing about him. Like, the feeling was vanished just like that. And you look at that person with nothing at all. Like you often wonder, 'how did I ended up loving this man?' Well, love is funny. Life is funny."
3 stars for the cute illustrations, 1 stars for the story, so 2 stars :D The stories are totally cheesy, and it's like peeking into someone's personal diary, and honestly it made me uncomfortable. But, I really like its illustration!
This book is simply perfect with deep-meaning-words in it. Even though i'm not reading this on a rainy day and a lil bit cheesy for me. Lol. But, I'm sure these stories will be warming up your heart. Oh, and i love the illustration
Astaga, bolehkah saya kaget sendiri?!!! Lol. Padahal, baca buku yang berhalaman ratusan biasanya seperti kura-kura berjalan.
Isi bukunya oke sih.
Still cheezy for me but quotes-able ✨ . . Anyway, good quotes for y'all:
---"Forever was a word too strong to be said. And anything could turn into promises and i didn't want to say something that I wasn't sure myself."
---"She really loves her cactus. Unfortunately she can't hug or even touch it even if she wanted to. But she loves it anyway. Because love isn't about touching, it's about caring and giving."
---"I'm tired of feeling things that I shouldn't never feel. I'm tired of hoping things that I shouldn't never hope. I'm tired of loving things that I shouldn't never love. I'm tired of missing things that I shouldn't never miss. I'm tired of being tiredly tired to feel tired of something so tiring."
---"Letting go also means that sometimes, no matter how much you thought you've put efforts into it, certain things are just not meant to be"
My comfort cozy book! It feels so good to read this, like it's building up the atmosphere surround you while you read it on rainy days with tea or coffee in your hands and listening to acoustic songs or instrumentals.
It talks a lot about couple and breakup. It makes you feel sad thinking about it but at the same time it makes you feel that it's already in the past and you must go on.
Anyway, I love the illustrations, that was my main reason why I bought this book! Actually, I've read the second and third book but it all feels the same to me so I prefer the first one since the first one is the one I read for the first time. All the memories and all the feelings already attached to it.
Cerita pertama tentang A Letter to Mr. Spaceman menarik perhatianku dan juga yang membuatku terus melanjutkan baca buku ini. Semakin jauh menurutku semua isi cerita sangat cheesy, beberapa kali hampir berhenti baca, tapi karena singkat aku tetap lanjut baca sampai akhir.
It's encouraging that more and more young Indonesian authors wrote interesting stories like these. I wonder though, for such young age with classic music reference, how far would she go?!
when i read this, it feels like im reading someone's diary and anw the book has really cute illustrations, but i guess the story is not really my thing
