Barnaby Grimes is a tick-tock lad, running errands in his city, day and night, and 'high-stacking' around the rooftops in search of new mysteries to solve. In this first adventure, Barnaby is attacked one night by an enormous dog. He kills it - but that's not the end of this particular mystery . . . as Barnaby finds himself swept up in a world of crooked doctors, poor and ill-advised patients, strange tonics and very expensive furs. Could there be more to the seemingly respectable Dr Cadwallader and the tonics he doles out to the poor? Is there a link between the tonic and the huge dogs - or possibly wolves - that are roaming the city at night? When Barnaby's old acquaintance Benjamin goes missing, Barnaby fears the worst for him, and decides to dig deeper.

This was a fun, quick Sunday afternoon read. In fact, I could read an adventure of Barnaby Grimes, the tick-tock lad (basically a roof-hopping messenger) in his weird, Victorian London-esque city, every Sunday afternoon. Though a predictable plot, I found the ideas and details clever and still rewarding. It definitely fed my hunger for stories set in quasi-dickensian worlds. It's basically the Artful Dodger doing parkour (wikipedia if you don't know what this is): two of my absolute favorite things. Wish I'd thought of it.
Barnaby Grimes is a tock-tock lad. He'll deliver any message for any client, anywhere, anytime. He's the fastest messenger around and he'll even climb on rooftops to deliver his messages on time.
One night, while Barnaby is traveling by rooftop, he is attacked by a huge wolf-like beast. When Barnaby's friend, Old Benjamin, disappears, Barnaby suspects the wolf had something to do with it and sets out to discover the truth, meeting a cast of strange characters along the way.
CURSE OF THE NIGHT WOLF is the first in the new BARNABY GRIMES series from the authors of THE EDGE CHRONICLES. The story combines mystery, history, horror, action-adventure, and the paranormal into a perfectly scary story for tweens. The black and white drawings add a chilling effect to the story. The characters are brilliantly drawn and the villain is perfectly evil.
Barnaby's story will continue in RETURN OF THE EMERALD SKULL, and from the preview in my copy of CURSE OF THE NIGHT WOLF, his adventures are going to get much scarier!
3.5 Wonderfully illustrated as always, grimey enough to be thrilling, but the mystery part was quite obvious. I know I'm not the target audience, but still. However, the beginning was so promising I had to kerp reading and the characters are vivid and interesting. All in all, a good read.
This first installment in the Barnaby Grimes series starts like this:
“Have you ever felt your skin being peeled slowly away from your arms and legs? Your muscles being torn and shredded as every bone in your body fights to burst through your flesh? Have you ever felt every tendon and sinew stretched to breaking point as your skeleton attempts to rip itself apart from the inside?
I have, and I’ll never forget it.”
With that, we are whirled into the action-packed Victorian London life of a certain young Barnaby Grimes, a young tick-tock lad whose job it is to hand-deliver messages to and from people all over London. He often employs the rooftops as a shortcut, spinning and leaping his way along the skyline of London in a practice known as “highstacking.”
In the course of his duties, Barnaby has a near-death encounter with a wolf. Soon, it is evident that this wolf has something to do with a rather dodgy doctor who has been administering doses, free of charge, of a miraculous elixir to some of the poorest and loneliest folks in town. Barnaby investigates, and eventually finds himself in that appalling situation described in the first few pages as he is transformed into a wolf himself.
Barnaby is a daring and intrepid lad who knows London – a rather fantastical and gravity-defying version of it, anyway – backwards and forwards. Full of pluck and plenty of hints about intriguing and outlandish adventures in his past, he caroms around his city like a Dickensian guttersnipe, wearing ragged yet raffish clothes (his extremely tall stove-pipe hat is a wonder) and bearing a slender swordstick at all times.
At 205 pages, this is a fairly short fantasy (much shorter than your average Edge Chronicles installment), and the large font size and small trim size make for a quick and breezy read. Reluctant readers who find themselves sucked in by Barnaby’s fast-paced adventures will find themselves challenged – hopefully pleasantly – by Barnaby’s employment of rather ornate and colorful turns of phrase, and by some unusual vocabulary. Running across a pair of young river-toughs with chin tattoos who threaten him with their swordsticks, he addresses them thus – “’No need for roustabouts, my dear ink-chins,’ I said. ‘Why don’t you sheathe up your slicers, I’ll sheathe up mine – and I’ll be on my way.’”
I’m betting that the large font, enticing opening, and colorful characters will lure kids in and that they’ll keep reading even when they encounter words and phrases that challenge them. Kids don’t need to know what “foppish, if tatty, double-knotted cravats and embroidered waistcoats” look like in order to savor the description of the two river-toughs – and if they wish, they can check out the detailed illustrations by Chris Riddell, which pepper the book and bring Barnaby’s grimy, intriguing London to life.
Hopefully we’ll learn more about Barnaby’s home life, as well as some of those adventures he hints at so tantalizingly, in the next installment. Recommended for grades 4 to 6.
Undoubtedly my favorite Paul Stewart book. He's always kind of disappointed me in the past, y'know? Never really lived up this potential. This book marks a change, delving into a pseudo-Victorian style that's fun, fast-paced, and far better than anything he's done before.
There wasn't anything bad about this book, but. There wasn't anything special about it either. Unless you consider Chris Riddell's work of art special, which it is. The artwork by him has a special place in my heart from all of The Edge Chronicles books.
But that aside, this was written (I'm assuming?) for the younger side of Middle Grade audiences. That's not a bad thing, I just personally prefer those stories written by Paul Stewart to be closer to the Young Adult genre (hense, The Edge Chronicles - which technically is on the border of Middle Grade and Young Adult, I think).
Anywho, I liked the historical feel to it and the story was good. It was a nice light and easy read, which I reckon is something we can all related to needing now and then.

It's not the destination, but the journey, that counts. I hope folks remember that when they criticize this book for not being suspenseful enough. So you knew where the plot was headed only a chapter into the book? So what? That's not what makes this book totally charming and a worthwhile read.
Barnaby Grimes is a fun, loyal, thoughtful, and wily character. I LOVED the idea of high-stacking and wished I could go with him, adventuring across the rooftops of Victorian era London. (And what a great setting!) He's a total scamp, with a clap on the back for his friends and a wink for the ladies.
He's also a sleuth, and following him around as he unravels the mystery is way more fun than sitting outside the narrative saying, "Oh, yeah. I already knew that was gonna happen."
I didn't read this book because I wanted a shock at the end, or a broad-reaching, sinister government conspiracy. I picked this one up because I love a good story with a little something extra to offer. I intend to keep following Barnaby Grimes' adventures, and I hope you do, too.
Paul Stewart narrates scarily in first person and Chris Riddell inks fine-lined fancies. A short shiver perfect for Halloween. A tick-tock boy, courier in Victorian London, is always in a hurry to make deliveries on time. Clues are in our face up front, so we easily guess where the trendy lush fur trims originate, where the impoverished sickly patients with luxurious manes disappear, and why our brave orphan lad suffers for confronting the clever doctor alone. I am a chicken-heart and already have a sweeter (wigwigs as carnivorous tribbles are still scary) book by the same duo to represent them on my 5* favorite fan shelf, the rating should be 5*. I would add Scary or Fear shelf, but most of my recent YA would all qualify.

I am enjoying this series very much, but dont be deceived by its Innocent looking children booky appearance, looking like a small book with a large font.
it is full of darkness and savagery and lots of complicated words. not a real YA but in appearance, and very VERY entertaining.
update 27th July 2025 so I reread it again, and i still LOVE IT , the short fast paced macabre tale , is just exquisite. only problem , only four of these in the series.
I bought this for my 13 year old son but ended up reading it myself. The writing is tremendous and the tension in the story is palpable. True to the horror genre, bad things happen to good people and no one is safe. Fans of Gothic horror should grab up every book in this series. The bonus comes in the form of the excellent pen and ink illustrations - excellent value!!
read in one day... didn't even have the time to update the pages. thanks to my dear sister for recommending, it was very good. easy to read, captivating storyline, short and snappish, likeable main character and a nice story. will definitely read more.

Barnaby Grimes on nuori "tick-tock lad", pikalähetti, joka oikaisee kattojen kautta viedäkseen viestit nopeasti vastaanottajille. Mukanaan Barnabyllä on aina kävelykeppi, jonka sisältä paljastuu tarvittaessa miekka.
Shokkivaikutus on taattu.
I love anything Paul Stewart & Chris Riddell create together! The worlds that their writing and illustrations bring to life are interesting and incredibly creative and Barnaby Grimes is no exception!
Barnaby Grimes is a tick-tock lad living in Victorian London. His job is to deliver and carry packages, letters and important documents across the city as quick as he can - which means criss crossing the rooftops of London instead of taking the streets, also known as high stacking. As a tick-tock lad, Barnaby sees all sorts of interesting and sometimes dangerous people.
In Curse of the Night Wolf, Barnaby is attacked by a mysterious wolfish creature one night on his way home from a job after discovering that an old friend has gone missing. Between the attack and delivering mysterious letters for a new client (who Barnaby suspects is not as well intentioned as he claims to be) Barnaby certainly has his hands full.
Curse of the Night Wolf is a great choice for fans of scary stories in 4th-6th grade. The historical aspect & vocabulary used in the writing make it just challenging enough for this "tween" age group. Riddell's cartoon-like line drawings bring the characters to life & add and extra "chill factor" to the scary moments. Curse of the Night Wolf is a great choice and I'm off to order the rest of the series for my library!
This thrilling story introduces the indubitable Barnaby Grimes, an intelligent, brave, and incredibly likeable character. Barnaby's adventures begin with a bang as the first chapter acts as a teaser for events that actually happen later in the book. The story is very fast paced and full of unique characters. The readers will, of course, know the answer to the mystery but watching Barnaby unravel it and attempt to stop the evil doctor is what makes the story so interesting. Barnaby has a great deal of spirit and the details of his journeys over the roofs of the city are fun and fascinating. The authors also manage to make his job sound very interesting with its varied duties and rituals. The idea of a boy (he seems to be at least close to be a teenager) who lives on his own and has such an intriguing job and lifestyle is sure to appeal to middle grade readers. His dashing but practical attire, including his handy sword cane (used in a duel and in fighting off a beast), give him a rakish appearance in the excellent illustrations peppered through the book. This is the first in a series and I can't wait to find out what other adventures await Barnaby Grimes!
the first one in the series. and a very promissing start (to also very good follow ups!). paul stewart starts with the most thrilling part of the story and on the point when it's getting the most dangerous for barnaby or when the secret is nearly revealed he makes a cut and starts telling the story from the beginning. very easy technique to draw the reader in from the beginning and it works very good! the atmosphere of the book is great: a big not really clean city (it's not clear which one, but i'm guessing london), weird characters and a great deal of mysterie which is on the edge of being supernatural. the time is not told as well, but i'm guessing (again) that it must be round 1900. giving it no definitly place and time is also a good thing, because it could be everywhere - even in a complete different universe - and everytime, so stewart don't need to be accurate about any historic things.
Surprisingly gruesome for being a kids book, but not overly gory. I think younger kids would love it, and maybe find it a little frightening - though the easily frightened, in a bad way, and over-protective parents might stear away from it.
I wish I liked it more than I did, though. It's one of those books that, while told in first person, feels distant. I never really clicked with it, and never really felt the terror of the situation. Also, I had the mystery figured out in, like, the first 5 pages, and you know that it ends well since it's sort of told as a flashback, so maybe that takes something of the edge off?
Fast read, enjoyable enough, and I loved the illustrations by Riddel. I'll still probably get the next in the series, even though I didn't love it, more because I'm hoping there's a payout to the potential.
Barnaby Grimes: Curse of the Night Wolf is a rare case for me. I happened to come across it in my library's catalog while looking for another book and the title and cover proved interesting enough that I didn't bother reading the synopsis before picking it up. I imagine that most older readers will be able to figure out what is going on by the second chapter but even with the lack of surprises my over all enjoyment wasn't diminished. Stewart's writing immersed me in Barnaby's world from the very first page and I found it hard to leave it when the real world came calling. Riddell's illustrations prove to be a wonderful addition and make me wish once again that more adult books would do the same. As an adult I hadn't expected to enjoy this book so much but now I'm wishing I had the other three so that I could continue the adventure right away.
A fast paced deliciously morbid Victorian Gothic targeted towards middle grade readers. Barnaby Grimes is one of London's most efficient Tick Tock Lads, these young men are couriers who deliver important documents at top speed. When one of Barnaby's friends goes missing he finds himself caught in a chilling mystery that may just make him the next victim! Paul Stewart supplies a first rate Gothic offering with plenty of atmospheric prose and delicious suspense. I figured out the ending prior to the final reveal but it was still a satisfying journey. Looking forward to the next installment in this series!
This was a fun read - ok its aimed at +11 so i was in with a chance. the writings big and spaced out and at only just over 200 pages its a fast read. I wont spoil the storyline but if you like victorian London with a twisted view then this is actually a very entertaining read. It does not take a genius to work out the story and in the number of pages thats a good thing rather its one long plunge in to the story rushing you to the conclusion. I really enjoyed it and drove me on to buy the rest in the series.
If you’re a fan of The Edge Chronicles, you will love this! The wit and flair of this writer and illustrator are perfectly matched, combining an exciting, adventurous story with whimsical and evocative line drawings. Although the city remains unnamed, it’s most certainly based on Victorian London, filled with hansom cabs, messenger boys, ruffians and nobility. The supernatural twist will keep young readers hooked (especially boys – this is perfectly suited to them!), and the antics of Barnaby Grimes will entertain readers of pretty much any age.
