This book was good but a little dry for my liking. I like a little more romance in my books and less background. This had more background. Its about Angela who was married for five years and her husband died in a auto accident. He had always told her if he died he would send her someone so she wouldn't be alone. She doesn't know if she believes this or not. It centers on her life in canada and her mom in england as they travel to greece. I think if you like a background book you will like this one

It is considered exteremly bad forms for a woman to sit on a commuter train crying her eyes out on her way home, this is the situation that I found myself in yesterday when I finished this book. Angela's last date with her husband broke my heart not only was it touching but it was extremely sensitive and beautifully written, for me this is where the story really gets going. I love the mother daughter relationship and for me Viv really brings a sence of light relief with her. A wonderfuly and creative read with some comparisions to PS I Love You but well able to stand alone as a good story in its own right.

Black with Cream and Sugar

This novel reminds me of how I always used to order my coffee:"black... with cream and sugar". I meant the pause as a tongue-in-cheek way of admitting I wasn't quite yet equal to just drinking it black.

Mason successfully sweetens and lightens the darkness of her subject matter with endearing female characters and entertaining dialogue. The black acid taste of devastating grief is made tolerable by their plucky get-on-with-it-then manner of supporting one another. Mason didn't overdo it; one knows the brew is essentially too hard to choke down without a bit of cream and sugar.

I will express disappointment in Mason's proofreaders. This book suffers from numerous proof-edit oversights.

Angela’s husband, Jonathan, promised if something happened to him, he’ll send her a lover. Two years after his death, nothing happens and Angela feels like she’s an emotional wreck.
Trying to cope with her misery, she ends up going on a trip to Greece with her over vivacious mother – Vivian, who’s although full of life, is actually afraid of dying, the antithesis of Angela.
While in Greece, Angela meets two men she likes and wonders if Jonathan is being true to his word. But which one is the one?
This is a chick-lit which reminded me at first of P.S I Love You. This is the first book of Carol Mason I read and I enjoyed her style of writing and her humour. Vivian adds a lot of wit to the story by being the innocently sweet mother who thinks her daughter insane for not enjoying life to the fullest. Angela’s somewhat sombre character who tries too hard to find a lover, thinking every men is sent her way by her dead husband. Although, she finds her happily ever after, there was not much story behind her relationship with the man she ultimately finds herself with. As a reader, I felt like I missed out on the chemistry with her ‘the one’.
But the good writing and wit makes up for it. I’m glad for Mason’s Vivian who is actually the life of the book.
I had the pleasure of meeting with Carol Mason during the SiWA conference in Surrey, BC (October) and she’s lovely with her wonderful British accent. Her books has all the entities a good read should have – humour, drama, tears and the suspense (of who she’ll ultimately end up with). We do see character development in both Angela and her mother in the end and also a much happier Angela. This is a good chick-lit for a cozy afternoon read.

This novel was nuts, it had one heartfelt over the top scene and that was it for me. Then it began to jump around and miss big parts in my opinion. The heroine started off as somewhat of a prude, only to behave in the most sluttiest of ways. Suddenly all these men are coming out of the woodwork and then she's all over the place... HUGE GAP... THE END. I was like what? What the fuck did I just read? Yeah, it was okay but it was nothing better than that.

I think this was Carol Mason's first novel and although I have to admit to being a bit of a fan, for me it lacked some of the polish and maturity of her later ones. The changing locations - Vancouver, Zakinthos and Italy/Capri - and the changing list of potential 'lovers' made the narrative a little clunky. And maybe 'Mam' was a bit too much of a caricature for this sort of novel..?

Ugh...

The ending is a HUGE and Horrible disappointment!! You get towards the end thinking "yes! Finally!" Then the very next sentence flips around so unexpectedly and just drops you right on your ass...terrible! I loved this book, until the last chapter seems as though it was written for a completely different book. I want to cry it was so bad 😢

Unexpected pleasures.

This book is a total joy. It rang e s from tragic to triumphant and is never predictable. Wonderful depiction of friendship,especially. Interesting portrayal of the Mother Daughter relationship. Love lost, grief and recovery, and all with a special sprinkling of humor. I might read it again to catch nuances I missed the first time.

Really good book. Unexpected ending, which always is good for me - 'cause I hate being able to predict an ending. Seems to drag a bit in the beginning, don't let it deter you. Very well thought out plot. More of a real adult romance, rather than the Harlequin variety. There's a ton of real issues explored in this book. You will cry, just expect it. I feel better for having read it!

This was a very good book. More realistic than most romance type books. More of a feel good mom and daughter, daughter overcoming losing her husband than romance though. I hope for more of this type of read from Carol Mason.

Another book you can't put down!

Descriptive attention to detail that lends itself to maintaining the flow of the story leading the reader to find what is the next twist in the tale. The reader can expect the unexpected - you just can't put this enjoyable novel down!

I bought this book as a "Holiday Read" and I have to admit I enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting to, This book for me was a cross between Mamma-Mia and P.S Iloveyou. The main character Angela has lost her husband 2 years ago to a car accident and she still hasn't fully got over his death so she books a holiday with her mum to Greece and meets a few men over there who she begins to like, Her husband had said that if he ever died he would send someone for her to love again. I thought the concept of this book was very heartwarming. I loved Angela as she was very down to earth and was described perfectly, She was a very realistic character as she had her own problems and struggles.
I loved the holiday part in Greece with Angela and her mum as their relationship was something I adored as they would fight but you knew deep down they loved and cared for each other.
I only rated this 3 stars as yes I did really enjoy this book and it's characters but some parts of this book was a bit predictable with the situations the characters were in had been in other books before. Also I didn't really like how this book ended simply because throughout the book their were around 5 guys Angela could of ended up been with at the end. I had no idea that the person she would choose would be one of the men that was at the beginning of the story, He wasn't a main character meaning you didn't get to read about him properly throughout the book and see how their relationship unfolded which was something you saw with every other character.
I was disappointed with the end choice but I have to admit this was a great holiday read!

This is an appealing book - dealing with Angela's recovery after the unexpected death of her husband and her "mission" to try and find another lover to live up to his ideal (some two years later). Her quest is one thwart with emotional turmoil - loss and longing, laughter and companionship. It begins with her taking her 60 year old mother to a Greek island. And I'll have to say, her mother is what saved this story from being a pretty tedious account. She's awesome - with her mispronounced idioms and her tendency to act like someone if not half, than at least 2/3s her age. Along the way, Angela keeps running into sexy men that seem to be interested in her - but there is always some sort of issue. This is a bit of a fresh and original break away from the traditional chick-lit formula, but after a while it became a bit tedious. You, as the reader, kept wondering "is this going to be the one?" and then realising, "no, not this one." And then when she finally does find "the one" you feel like you've missed out on the development of their relationship.

I think the novel could be a bit more tightly plotted, as it does tend to meander a bit, but I suppose it is as much as Angela making a new start on a life without her husband then it is about her finding another true love. It was an okay read but nothing to write home about.
