My prayers have been answered - I’ve found a RH sequel without second-book-syndrome!! This wasn’t just meaningless pages without plot - instead, it added to the story, was exciting and new, and had COMMUNICATION!!! So much communication!
The characters learned from their mistakes, always tried their best to make up for errors, and grew as a team. They talked to one another and worked together, and each of them had a role and a unique personality.
Our protagonist was strong and human, and she spent much of the book trying her best to break down her own walls and learn to lean on others. The mmcs were flawed but dedicated to the team, and I’m excited to see how they continue to befriend one another.
The plot was interesting - I don’t know who to trust, or where it could be going, but I’m excited to find out!
Such an addictive, entertaining, rewarding sequel. Equally exciting as book #1 but it wasn’t just a meaningless addition to the series - we had major character and relationship growth! (Also communication! Have I mentioned that?).
Thank you so much to the author for the ARC, I can’t wait for book #3!
I was so excited to get to do an immersive audio and ebook read for this one! Thank you so much, Eva Chase for the ARC and ALC!
I loved book one. The unique magic, the alternate universe, the secrets, the four smokin hot fated mates, the academy setting, all of it!
This book had all of that but it built onto it and made it even better! I love the growth of Elodie’s character in this book. Kind of making this life her own, making peace with her life now. I loved getting to know the guys better! Learning more about her past and how hard it was on her to have so many secrets and to be used like she was.
The spice kicks it up a notch in this one too 🔥 and I can’t wait for it to keep building! Their magic is so unique and interesting! I’m dying to know what Asher is going to end up with! I think auntie has some explaining to do as well, seems fishy haha
This is a really fun read. I am excited for the mystery to be revealed, and to see what’s going to happen next! For them to fully bond and embrace their partnership!
Absolutely loved the direction this book took!!!! So many amazing scenes and I'm so glad certain plot points weren't dragged out (iykyk). It was such a breath of fresh air to see and I loved how it was written.
Elodie has really made me fall even more in love with her because seriously this girl?!?! She is actually just the bravest, strongest and sweetest person like wow I would so want to be her friend. Such an amazingly well written character right here. I'm forever in awe of the amount of things she has been through and yet she still remains so strong. And the way she finally let herself be vulnerable??? I can't wait to see Elodie become more confident in herself and get all the love and safety she deserves!!! Especially with her matches🥹
Which speaking of her matches--oh my gosh I adored all their scenes together and with Elodie so so much!!! But you know who really shined? SALVATORE, MY MAN. I LOVE HIM, YOUR HONOUR!!!! THIS GUY???? I genuinely melted into a puddle way too many times he's everything😭 Seriously I need a Salvatore in my life. The way he understood so much of Elodie's character?? The parts of her she tried hiding but he saw it!! He knew what was up omg. And how he accepted every part of her and is so fiercely devoted🥹 I am actually so obsessed with them. And then Cole?? I did not expect Cole to be my 2nd fav but here we are, he's so sweet😭 I don't want to say too much because its best to experience it yourself but wow I love his character so much. That one scene near the end?? crying it was so sweet my heart was soaring. Byron and Asher are also really sweet and I loved the scenes Elodie had with them but really Salvatore stole the show for me the most LOL so I don't have too much to say on them. I just can't stop thinking about Salvatore (loml I'm just too gone for him). I can't wait to see how all their relationships develop even more from here.
And the plot!! So good. We're left with so many questions after book 1 and even more so after this ending. I still have my suspicions about certain people but I will admit that one of them is really close to winning me over... STILL I'M GOING TO REMAIN PARANOID. As for that reveal at the end... damn. This only doesn't get a 5 star from me because of a little pacing issues & just not getting that 5 star feeling but otherwise I loved it! I'm so excited for the next book!!
Thank you Eva Chase for the ARC via BookSirens in exchange for an honest review!
This is a continuation of the first book, Bloom and Blood. I listened to the audiobook version.
This series has a unique premise. Our MFC gets ripped from her world to another dimension where her mom died instead of her dad in that car crash. This has altered EVERYTHING! Including the fact that she hadn't sparked with her four matches yet, until now...
Book 2 explores more about who is out to get our MFC. With the help of her four fated matches, they chip away a little more about who wanted her dead, the whole reason why she was brought to this reality in the first place. They have to keep the matching a secret though in order to uncover more of that truth. This is easier said than done when all they feel in the need to solidify their bonds.
The narrators for this series so far are incredible. The male voice acting is really skilled having to do four+ separate personalities & dialects. It's one of the more impressive casts I've heard since getting into more audio.
Perfect for lovers of mystery, fated bonds, RH, supernatural, Touch her and 💀, awaking powers, and multiple antagonist!
Trigger warnings are present but this one is on the softer side in my opinion. Book 2 is spicier than book 1. She actually seals a couple of the bonds in this one.
I received an ALC of this book and I am leaving my review voluntarily.
Well once again Eva, you have sucked me into your world and I need MORE of it! This is book 2 in the Elodie Divine Series. The stakes are higher, the mystery deepens, the action is ramped up, and the spice is HOT!
This book picks up right where we left off in book 1, and just like book 1, we start with a bang. Eva comes in hot and gets right to the action. Elodie’s life is once again at risk, her murderer is still out there, and she’s still on the hunt for who’s out to get her. The murder mystery plot thickens in this one. We get some answers, but I’m still left reeling with questions after that ending! I have SO many theories on everything that’s going on! I love a good murder mystery and Eva continues to deliver in such a fun and unexpected way! Something I also enjoyed is the further character development for Elodie, how she’s navigating this parallel universe, and we also get to know more about her glim.
Now my favorite part about this book is the progression of her relationships with her fated mates! & yes, I said MATES, don’t forget this is a why choose! I loved seeing these bonds develop and deepen throughout this book. You not only understand Elodie more, but each of these men as well. & I know we’re supposed to love all our mates equally, but confession time… Salvatore might be my favorite. I love a bad boy! & the spice really picks up in this one and I LOVE it, especially that one scene that matches my song choice! IYKYK! 🤭
Eva keeps you on your toes this ENTIRE book and makes you want to keep reading past your bedtime! And that ending?! I need book 3 TODAY because her cliffhangers literally leave me wanting more!
Once again, shoutout to the narrators Rose & Stephen! They continue to do an amazing job! What really leveled up in this book is the chemistry between Elodie and her mates, you could literally FEEL it as they spoke, along with every other emotion in this book!
I was lucky enough to get an arc read of this book-What an ending! This series is definitely one I’m excited to keep reading.
It starts off right where book 1 ended which was an amazing cliffhanger. Something about the FMC really has me rooting for her. She’s strong, smart, and does not make dumb decisions just for the sake of moving the plot forward. She learns from her mistakes and it’s so refreshing!
Also most of the secrets she kept from book 1 get brought to light and i love that. Goodbye secret trope. It’s resolved! Mostly.
One thing i wanted more from this book was more romantic and sexual tension between Elodie and her matches. It’s a why choose- and i almost forgot that here. I definitely enjoyed the first book sexual tension more than the scenes in this 2nd book, but there’s a huge plot focus which i love too.
Some books entertain me. Some books stay with me. Shine & Shadow did both. 🖤✨
When a book makes me cry more than once, I know it has completely captured my heart. This sequel was packed with raw emotions, heartbreaking moments, hope, love, fear, and unwavering loyalty. I felt every single emotion alongside Elodie and her men, and by the time I reached the final page, I was already desperate for the next book. 😭📖
Picking up immediately after the shocking ending of book one, Elodie was forced to face the consequences of finally revealing who she truly was. Torn from her own reality and given a second chance in another world, she had barely begun to understand the tangled mate bonds connecting her to these morally grey men. Now everyone knew she was the core of their union, and with powerful enemies still hunting her, there was little time to process the truth before survival became the priority. 🌑⚔️
One of my favorite parts of this book was watching the relationships slowly evolve. ❤️ The trust wasn’t instant, and that’s exactly why it felt so rewarding. These men came from completely different worlds and had every reason to distrust one another, yet little by little they chose to stand together because protecting Elodie became more important than their differences. Watching them lean on each other, find strength in each other, and slowly become something resembling a family made my heart so full. 🥹✨
The mystery also deepened in the best way. Every answer uncovered seemed to create two more questions, and I loved constantly trying to piece everything together. The danger never disappeared, the stakes kept climbing, and I genuinely had no idea where the story was heading next. Eva Chase kept me completely hooked from beginning to end. 🔥🖤
And the emotions… wow. 😭 There were scenes that absolutely shattered me. Others made me smile so hard because of the quiet moments of comfort, trust, and affection between the characters. The emotional balance was beautiful, and it reminded me why I love character-driven fantasy so much.
This officially became my favorite book in the series so far. Every character felt more layered, every relationship became more meaningful, and the world expanded in ways that made me even more invested. I loved getting to know everyone better, and I never wanted to leave them. 💙
Then came that ending.
Excuse me… I needed book three immediately. Right now. This second. I wasn’t prepared to be left wanting more this badly. 😭📚
Perfect for readers who love: 🖤 Why Choose / Reverse Harem ✨ Fated mates ⚔️ Urban fantasy with high stakes 🩶 Morally grey heroes who absolutely yearn 🔥 Slow-building romance 🫶 Found family and emotional healing 💖 Protective love interests 🕵️ Mystery woven into the fantasy plot 🌙 Strong heroine getting a second chance 😭 Emotional, character-driven stories that will make you cry
Thank you so much to Eva Chase for the ARC opportunity. It was an absolute pleasure to continue Elodie’s journey, and I cannot wait to see where this incredible series goes next. ❤️
I absolutely devoured this book!! I loved the first book Blood & Bloom, but somehow Shine & Shadows managed to raise the bar even higher!
This second book picks up immediately after Elodie has sparked her match with Salvatore, and now all her other matches know she is the core of their union. I love the dynamic of the group and especially how the guys mention how they didn’t feel anything until our Elodie came in from another reality.
One of my favorite aspects of this sequel is that Eva Chase doesn't simply have Elodie move on from her original world. Instead, the three years she spent with her original mates continue to shape every decision she makes. Rather than pretending that part of her life never existed, she uses everything she learned to help protect there guys in this reality.
especially loved how she awakened Bryon's and Cole's glims. Because she already knew the versions of them from her own world, she was able to guide them through the process in a way that felt safer and more personal. I’m not one to pick favorites but I think Cole is my favorite especially when he had her confess EVERYTHING!! The fact that she felt better talking with these mates than her original says A LOT!!
I love that the mystery never slows down and that is still their goal on finding who killed Elodie. But also that sexual tension 🔥🔥🔥🔥 and Byron and Salvatore 🥵 I am excited to see Asher’s glim!
And that ending... Yes, it's a massive cliffhanger-but it's perfect because it keeps me guessing what is going to happen next!!
Wow! Wow! Wow! What a ride this book was! I need book three immediately! I loved the magic in this universe, I couldn’t get enough of the multiple matches.
I’m curious to learn more about Elodie’s aunt, she definitely is more than meets the eye. I also can’t wait to see how her relationship with each match continues to develop. And uncle Nik… what the heck! What a cliffhanger!
Amazing story, intriguing magical system! You should definitely consider adding this series to your TBR if you like: why choose. fated mates. parallel universes. unraveling mysteries and lots more
I absolutely loved the second book. It takes off right where Bloom & Blood left us. I was able to dive right back in and continue after the interesting cliffhanger. I loved the pacing of this book. We get to spend more time getting to know the characters and their developing connections while also getting the right amount of action in between! I can't wait for the third book. The ending left me wanting for more
i am so thankful i got to be an arc reader for this book! genuinely i took my arc reading role so seriously i was LOCKED in lol. that being said, i’ll give spoiler free for the first few paragraphs and then i need to say my thoughts/theories so there will be spoilers!
end of book 1 was the unexpected bonding between eloide and her matches. in book 2 eloide is navigating how to solve her continued murder attempts while keeping everyone she cares about safe. we get a lot of spicy scenes and watch eloide refall in love with her matches. we get lots of humor from salvatore and unexpected die hard dedication from the other matches. cole is still an ass, but he won me back.
i really enjoy this series because elodie is such a capable fmc. she doesn’t need anyone else and she can protect herself. however, she is also strong enough that she is able to depend on and trust others. the way she can navigate building relationships while trying to stay alive is truly impressive.
the mmcs in this book are soooo good omg. salvatore is so hot and funny and protective and ughhh so good! the rest of the men are also protective and obsessed with elodie (as they should be).
if book 1 had you hooked, you should def keep reading this series! i was definitely just as hooked in this sequel as i was in book 1!
the rest of this review is going to contain SPOILERS!
——————————————————————————————
first of all, let’s talk elodie. i love how powerful and badass she is. i love how she does not run away from problems, but instead tackles them head on. i enjoyed her coming to the realization that she has people she can trust and fall on in this book instead of doing it all on her own. i do think at times she was stupid, especially in book 1 (aren’t we all though). i think she needs to be less trusting of her dad and aunt daphne though for sure. i really like her funny bits in her head that showed dark humor. i hope we get more of that in book 3! i love a fmc who can handle herself in a fight and does not rely on men to protect her, and protects herself. i love her loyalty to her matches and how she works so hard to make them all feel seen and cared for. the girl can balance work and play that’s for sure.
okay salvatore is my favorite match. i love how funny, protective, and ride or die he is. i also loveee an obsessed man and him always stalking her is so hot. i also just love a bad boy. byron is second fav. his morality is sometimes annoying, but i love his protectiveness as well. his spicy scenes are all super good and i love the obsession he has for elodie! asher third and cole fourth. asher just was nothing to write home about in this one. i think next book he will be better. cole really was pissing me off at the beginning, but he grew on me. i did think his hotel scene was cute, but i need him to get over the whole “i’m still your professor” stick lol. all in all i like all of them and i LOVE how they put their differences aside to take care of their girl. UGH that was so cute of them!
what i really liked about this book was elodie finally putting aside the guilt to build new relationships with these men. the speaking to her past matches bit was interesting, but i thought it was a good addition because in the first book i felt so bad for them. it sounds like the past matches didn’t treat her the best though, so i am very happy to see these matches treat her amazing. i love how protective they are over her without taking away her choices. i HATE in books when the mmcs takes away the fmc free will, so i was really happy elodie kinda stayed the boss in this dynamic.
side note, stella is lowkey growing on me. i hope she’s not secretly evil. also i have a really bad feeling about aunt daphne for some reason. she is shady asf
okay conspiracy theory about what i think is actually going on. i think uncle nik and his little group are at war with gwyn and her group. i think both groups are radiants and were all a part of one group. i think elodie was born from two very powerful bloodlines and when that happened, the group was divided on whether to kill her or to use her for some other purpose. i think uncle niks group are still probably evil and just want to use elodie as their weapon. alternatively, the other group knows how powerful she could become so they are threatened by her and want her dead.
elodies mom in her past life being so shady about her family is weirdddd. it’s giving that she comes from a very powerful/dangerous family and she ran away with elodie to keep her safe and hide her from them. i do think uncle nik truly comes from her moms side of the family and could very well be related to elodie.
basically, i think everyone is secretly evil but elodies matches lol. i can’t wait to see what asher’s powers are next book and i hope we finally get all the answers and solve the mystery.
(side note: being an arc reader is so exhilarating omg i hope i can do this like 100000 more times)
I finally got some of the answers I was desperate for but now I need to see how this ends!
I have to say Elodie’s character is a badass. Girl had been through it in her other reality and this one wasn’t much kinder to her. She was so resourceful and knew how to handle herself but when the murder plot thickened she leaned on her matches and I loved the honesty between them .
All of her matches get more attention in this book and I loved getting to know their characters. I’m hoping we get more sweet baby Asher in book 3 because I know his glim (power) is going to be insane!
I’m anxious awaiting the finale. I can’t to see how Eva brings it all together!! Thank you Eva Chase for the advanced copy.
I just finished Shine & Shadow by Eva Chase, and it was every bit as good as the first book!
This series just keeps getting better. It has the perfect mix of adventure, mystery, romance, and spice, balanced with so much heart. The love, loyalty, and sacrifices these characters make for each other had me completely invested from beginning to end.
The plot is incredibly unique and so addictive! I never knew what was coming next, and I couldn’t put it down. Eva Chase has created a world and cast of characters that I’m completely obsessed with.
Now I’m counting down the days until book three because I need to know what happens next. If you love romantic fantasy with action, mystery, emotional moments, and plenty of chemistry, this series is an absolute must read.
I need to start with one very important piece of information: I love Salvatore.
Now, onto the review. The only reason I didn't give this book a full five stars is that the pacing felt slightly slower than in the first book.
On the other hand, that slower pace gave the characters more room to grow and made it much easier to build a connection with them.
I absolutely love how original this series is, whether it's the magic system or the story itself. I can't wait to learn more because the ending was packed with action and huge revelations!
MY THOUGHTS: This series is still seriously a breath of fresh air! After reading so many books, finding one with a unique storyline is getting harder and harder! But this one right here succeeded and continues to be amazing!
This story picks up where the first book left off. She has bonded to her first mate in the current realm. The plot is so complex with so many different moving parts and characters that it keeps you fully invested from start to finish!
The spice in this one kicks it up a notch! I seriously love why choose books! The spicy scenes are just so wild to picture haha!! We get a pretty heavy dose of spice here in this one! This being said, I can not wait for the next book!! I am waiting for that moment when the group is together as a whole for spicy time! Especially when the Professor gives in and says “f*ck it!” I will raise my hands, kick my feeet and squeal in delight!
There is still a lot of story that we just don’t know yet. Ever so slowly things are opening up and revealing itself, but I still can’t really guess what is going to happen from here as far as the main plot line! This one does end in a pretty big cliffhanger as well. Verrrrry curious where book 3 will take me!
FAVORITE QUOTE(S): “He likes to be in control. This development will have ransacked his expectations like a manic poltergeist.” -Elodie (speaking about Byron)
“You have a gift. A gift that can remove the worst threats to this world—eliminate the people who’re setting us on a horrible course.” -Uncle Nik (past)
“Salvatore’s voice breaks through the renewed murmurs. ‘I want a rematch with Devine!’ F*** a falak. Does he really think this is a good idea?” -Elodie
“It must be nice to trust that someone who’s smarter than you is ushering you along an ideal path.” -Elodie
“Well, this is only as awkward as holding a faerie party in an iron mine.” -Elodie

I love this DUET-narration audiobook! I just love audiobooks as a whole! They provide the reader with a completely different & more immersive experience! These narrators are amazing and they did a phenomenal job, perfectly executed narration with plenty of emotion and voice shifts for each of the characters and each character is easily distinguishable! THANK YOU’S: Thank you to Author Eva Chase for this amazing book! I loved reading it, look forward to the next book in this series and look forward to reading future books by this author and publisher! Thank you!
A lot of time in this genre we get filler-filled book 2, where not a lot happens except (usually) sex. There's no hurried relationship or forgetting the plot in this one though, that wasn't a thing here! We got plot continuation! At a good pace! And details. Sooooo many details. The murder mystery aspect of this book is done so well. Some plot points were finished. Others left open for book 3. New ones appeared towards the end.
All of the characters have really good depth and the relationships progress at a normal rate, especially considering they're fated mates. Just a great continuation and development from the characters we met in book 1. I still absolutely love the dichotomy between the guys she knew in her reality and the ones she has in this one. That goes for all the other characters she knows in both realities too. The character growth and comparisons are just a great play on a multiverse fantasy book.
I hate a dreaded miscommunication trope. That will make me dnf so quick. We do have an FMC that's been hiding things (including for all of book 1), but I wouldn't classify it as miscommunication. Just withholding information until trust is formed, because she actually has an amazing reason. And guess what? They communicate! So well, in fact, that they meet in groups throughout the whole book JUST to communicate. So refreshing.
There were a few lulls where I got kind of bored, and some small things got a little repetitive, but overall a really good book.
*I was given this book as an eArc but my review is based solely on my own thoughts and opinions*
I very much enjoy this series. I think it is completely unique and such a cool story and premise. I devoured the first book.
This one felt more of a murder mystery than a bonded book if that makes sense. I wanted more romance and by the time it got to the romance, it took to long haha. But that’s just me and wanting romance early on. Just felt slow in that department. Overall I liked it and will continue the series. It’s still fun and I enjoyed following along them trying to figure everything out. I like that there isn’t a miscommunication trope and they are pretty open and honest with each other (well once she spills the beans lol). I’m interested to see what happens in book 3! I still think it’s a cool series :)
Shine & Shadow (The Second Fate of Elodie Devine #2) by Eva Chase
ANOTHER CLIFFHANGER?! Eva Chase really knows how to leave readers desperate for the next book.
After the incredibly slow burn in book one, we finally got some of the romance and spice I had been waiting for, and it was absolutely worth it. I'm also officially declaring Salvatore one of my favorite mates. Now I'm counting down the days until book three because I need answers after that ending.

This is the second book in The Second Fate of Elodie Devine series! I binged book 1 Bloom and Blood and I also did with this one! Finally some answers were revealed, there were more twists and turns and her relationship with her matches grew! If you love academic setting why choose mystery fated mates alternate realities morally grey mmcs Then you will love this series!
book one was good as an introduction but i wanted to dnf this so bad! everything is a mess all over the place and many things are happening, it’s too much we literally lost the plot 💀 and their relationship is getting more forced i can’t continue this series it’s so absurd
I loved it. I loved the writing. I love Elodie, Tor, Cole, and Byron. I also loved the academic setting. I loved the ending. What an ending. I loved finding out hopefully who’s the poisoner is. I also liked the mystery element leading up to it. I loved Aunt Daphne. I also liked the pacing. The writing was lyrical. The world was magical. It was a fantastic sequel. I can’t wait for book three. I loved the why choose aspect of it. I could not choose between all the men/love matches of Elodie. Overall, a great story. I want to thank the author for giving me the earc early

⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
⚡BLURB⚡ Our bond has sparked. The truth remains hidden... Despite my best intentions, I've bonded with the four fated mates I meant to avoid. The men who look and sound so much like the lovers I left behind in my old reality... but who have no idea who I really am. My attraction to them feels like a betrayal. Dragging them into the deadly mess I'm facing seems like a crime. But the more I try to hold them at a safe distance, the more I question whether that's only hurting them more. Can I uncover the conspirators out to murder me without risking the men I'm falling for all over again? And if I truly open my heart to them... will they want a mate who's ruined so many lives before?
⚡REVIEW⚡ So often in a series, book two can feel like filler, lacking plot or character development. This couldn't be further from the truth for Shine and Shadow, book two in Eva's latest series, The Second Fate of Elodie Devine. Following on immediately after Bloom and Blood ended, Elodie has sparked her matches, despite her reluctance. Someone is out to end her, and she is determined to root them out at any cost. But Aunt Daphne is acting strangely, and although she reveals the truth about who she really is to them, she's still keeping some secrets from her matches. This instalment is not only action packed, but it is full of mystery and intrigue, and the development of Elodie's bonds with her matches is wonderful, with each character having their own distinct profile and things to work through. I loved how Elodie's previous life complicated the way she approaches each match and how it informed any decisions she makes when it comes to them - particularly Asher and Cole.
Salvatore is probably my favourite of the matches. He is brash and loud, with a huge ego - but an even bigger pride in his bond with Elodie. If he thought he could, he would scream about it from the rooftops. He is the one who reminds the others that Elodie needs physical care and romantic time as well as their protection, which just makes me love him more. He is the one from the wrong side of the tracks, the one who will be the biggest shock to Elodie's friends and family when their bond is revealed, yet he is the one who throws himself 100% into it the moment their bond is revealed. I also loved his determination that all four of them should be better matches than the ones Elodie left behind in her old life.
Byron quickly accepts his bond with Elodie, and is delighted with his glim, but is more reserved than Salvatore. He is facing a big choice - his family or Elodie and the others - and I am interested to see how that is explored in the next book.
Cole is the hallmark Eva character who struggles with the bond. After *that* scene in Bloom and Blood, he is very much in the position that he is her Professor, and doesn't know how to be with her. He is harsh and combative, pushing Elodie into revealing the truth about herself - and in the aftermath he realises his behaviour has been poor. As the story progresses he starts to make amends - still in his brusque way, but you can see him coming around. I am excited to see him fully embracing the bond with Elodie and the others.
I think the plot point of Asher having been inadvertently killed by Elodie in her original realm, but being alive and well in this one has got incredible potential, particularly as they never got as far as sparking their match in Elodie's first life. She knows what Asher was working towards, and they had their friendship, but there was no opportunity to explore a relationship bond. It makes everything absolutely new for Elodie, and her huge need to protect Asher means she almost holds him at arm's length for a while. But he slowly works his way under her armour, chipping in with small, affectionate acts that show he feels everything massively and is just as desperate to protect her and cherish her as Salvatore and Byron. I am curious as to what will happen with his planned career and the bonds with Elodie and the others.
I absolutely do not trust Aunt Daphne, and I'm suspicious of Stella (I don't want to be, and hope I'm wrong!). One of the reveals at the end of the book proved a suspicion I held from early on in this book, and I'm both eager and apprehensive to see what comes next. The final reveal complicates Elodie's situation further, and I think is key to a word in the series title - Fate. The intrigue and mystery in this novel is absolutely stellar and had me gripped, desperate to know just what comes next for Elodie and her matches. I am particularly keen to see an exploration of exactly what Elodie's glim means - and just why it is causing her to be the focus of death threats.
For an Eva novel, the intimate content was surprisingly low - and in some ways it felt right, as the bonds were so new and being explored at the pace of each character - but I did miss it! I am looking forward to more spice in book three.
The Second Fate of Elodie Devine is, without doubt, my favourite Eva Chase series. It is so deep and detailed, and has so much going on that you trust nobody but Elodie and her matches. There is no way of knowing just where this story is going - and I adore that! Can't wait for book three!
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to review this book!
I absolutely loved Blood & Bloom, and somehow Shine & Shadows managed to raise the bar even higher.
Book one introduced us to Elodie after she’s pulled into an alternate version of her world and tasked with solving her own murder. Book two picks up immediately afterward as she tries to unravel who killed the other Elodie, protect her mates, determine who she can trust, accept that she may never return to her own world, and learn how to survive in a version of reality that’s familiar yet fundamentally different.
One of my favorite aspects of this sequel is that Eva Chase doesn’t simply have Elodie move on from her original world. Instead, the three years she spent with her original mates continue to shape every decision she makes. Rather than pretending that part of her life never existed, she uses everything she learned to help protect the mates in this world.
I especially loved how she awakened Bryon’s and Cole’s glims. Because she already knew the versions of them from her own world, she was able to guide them through the process in a way that felt safer and more personal. Salvatore’s birthday was another standout moment—it was such a sweet reminder that she hasn’t forgotten where she came from while still allowing herself to build something new.
I also appreciated that Elodie continued “talking” to her original mates in her head. Her gradual acceptance that, if she truly can’t return home, they would want her to embrace the life in front of her was surprisingly emotional.
Now let’s talk about Cole.
Yes, he spends much of book one—and the beginning of this one—being an ass. But honestly? I’m glad he finally confronted Elodie about keeping so many secrets. How he went about it wasn’t great, but he forced a conversation that probably wouldn’t have happened for a long time otherwise. What surprised me most wasn’t Cole’s reaction—it was everyone else’s. Once the truth was out, the four mates didn’t hesitate to accept it. Instead, they immediately decided they wanted to be better than the versions from her original world. Salvatore’s response had me laughing more than once, and once Cole finally accepted both the bond and how poorly he’d treated her, watching him swing completely in the opposite direction was incredibly satisfying and produced a few ‘aaaah’ moments. Now he just needs to get over the whole “I’m her professor” mindset.
Asher remains the biggest mystery of the group. Unlike the others, Elodie doesn’t have three years of memories with him as a mate—only their previous friendship. That makes him the wild card, and I cannot wait to see his story unfold. I’m hoping book three finally brings his glim awakening so all of the bonds can fully develop. I feel like he’s going to be key to resolving the mystery.
While all of this relationship development is happening, the mystery never slows down. Elodie is still trying to uncover who murdered the other Elodie while surviving attack after attack herself. There were so many twists that I honestly lost count of how many attempts were made on her life. The suspense stayed high throughout the entire book, and several reveals genuinely surprised me.
And that ending…
Yes, it’s a massive cliffhanger—but it’s exactly the kind I love because it left my brain racing with theories instead of simply feeling frustrated.
⚠️ Spoiler Theories Below ⚠️
1. I think the Radiants were originally one organization that split into two factions because of Elodie and the incredible power they believe she possesses. One side wants her dead, while the other seems determined to keep her alive—though I’m still not convinced their motives are entirely noble. 2. I’m convinced Elodie is at least half Radiant herself. We know almost nothing about her mother in either world, and that feels far too intentional. My current theory is that her mother was a Radiant who fell in love with a Lucent, making Elodie the very thing both factions are fighting over. 3. I also don’t fully trust Aunt Daphne. I think she knows much more than she’s admitting. I don’t necessarily believe she’s working with the Radiants, but that mysterious two-week disappearance still feels incredibly suspicious.
December 2026 can’t get here fast enough because I need book three.
Thank you, Eva Chase, for trusting me with an ARC copy of Shine & Shadows. It was an absolute joy to read, and I sincerely hope I have the opportunity to be part of your ARC team again in the future.

"I don't think there's any length I wouldn't go to if it'd see her through this storm, any number of people I wouldn't cut down to keep her with me."
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶🌶🌶.5
What you'll find in this book: • Why Choose • Academy Setting • Badass FMC • Alternative Universes • Reverse Harem • Touch Her and Die • Moody Professor • Second Chances • Fated Mates • Solving Her Own Murder
So the ending of Bloom and Blood had me in bits, I was left with an absolute abundance of questions after a pulse pounding high stakes ending. This book picks up literally exactly where we left off, and I honestly couldn't be happier that Eva didn't keep us waiting any longer. We hop straight back into this story filled with mystery, murder, romance and an academy setting filled with deadly trials. Taking the foundations created within book one in the series, and continuing to build on this in the best possible way. We learn so much more about the characters, the world and the magical system. I had the most amazing time and I already cannot wait for the next book in the series.
Elodie is such a badass and I loved that we get to see her giving up a bit of her control to let her mates help her within this book. As someone that knows more than those around her having come from another universe she has a lot of responsibility on her shoulders in trying to protect her family and her fated mates. It feels that as her fated mates earn her trust, her secrets and her vulnerability, we do too, we know there is something in Elodie's past that is eluded to but it so satisfying to have this revealed. Throughout the course of this book and the multiple POV's we get to learn more about Elodie and each of her matches individually, together and in groups.
Salvatore is exactly who he appears to be, the crime family heir that will stop at nothing to protect his match by any means necessary, hot headed and passionate. Bryon is reserved, cautious yet determined, a leader that is smart, intelligent and is nothing but devoted to Elodie. Cole is the professor, stern and cold, but this really is just a front he uses to protect those most important to him. Asher is the calm, reliable and sweet one of the group, but that doesn't make him any less capable or determined to contribute to the group. Despite the strength of each of these men, we also get to learn about some of their insecurities which provides depth to their characters. The why choose, reverse harem aspect of the book is my favourite part, their connection, the spice and the intensity of their feelings makes for such an amazing part of a great story.
We continue to delve into this mystery of who is trying to kill Elodie in this book, and it kept me guessing in the best way. This interlinked with the magical system of the world allowing for Eva to explore the tendrils of the mystery while also continuing to build on the lore of this world. There are so many potential culprits to who could be out to get her that it keeps you on the edge of your seat, as Elodie and her matches work together to try and find answers. I could not get enough of this part of the story, murder mystery and why choose with an intense magical twist makes for a top tier story in my opinion.
Don't even get me started on the deadly trials, having this weaved into the story only elevated it further, and fit seamlessly into the story. As if the story wasn't pulse pounding enough, this only adds to this further. Within the academy setting, filled with the most elite heirs to the strongest most influential families in the world there is a level of cutthroat backstabbing that is to be expected in an environment like this one. With potential enemies at every turn it makes you wonder who is friend and who is foe, keeping you guessing in the best way. Despite the reveals we get during this book, there are still so many questions left unanswered including the mystery surrounding someones glim and who is leading those willing to go after Elodie with everything they have.
Thank you so much to the author for sending me a finished copy to read and review early.
Author: Eva Chase Series: The Second Fate of Elodie Devine Publisher: Independently Published Release Date: July 16th, 2026 Pages: 488
Unfortunately this series was not for me. Which was sad because I love the Shadowblood Soul's series (it was my first ever RH/WC). I did not DNF even though I didn't enjoy the first book either but I really tried.
I guess things I didn't like/enjoy were a lot more than the things I liked. VERY LONG RANT:
(When I say OG Elodie I mean the Elodie that died)
- I really did not like the leaving the original mates thing. It irked me the wrong way when the author constantly tried to make it feel like she had two groups of mates (even though they are technically the same people in different universes) but somehow the ones she met in the new universe were "better". Also I did not enjoy how the OG Elodie in the her own universe was "hated" by the mates and they did not feel any connection to her. So our Elodie(from another universe) is the "#mate" in every universe and she has several mate groups but the OG Elodie in her original universe isn't? Justice for the OG Elodie and the mates that were LEFT in the other universe. It annoyed me and saddened me so much.
- I also hated how the author made Elodie basically hallucinate that her original mates were "supportive" of her moving on with other universe's themselves and they even made comments to help Elodie make moves with the other guys??? Like oh my god. It was also ambiguous that if the OG mates actually spoke to her or if she just imagined. At LEAST make it clear for the readers. And even if they "actually" said those things I felt like it was a very lazy and cheap way to make it seem like "it's okay!!!!"
- I don't know why it bothered me so much. I just couldn't move on from the fact that her actual first mates were LEFT behind. First they lost someone from their group and then Elodie? And everyone is suppose to be okay with it? Those poor guys oh my god. They lost everything. They sacrificed everything for Elodie and now she is gone and she will be with their otherselves??? And what are they going to do?
This is a horror story.
- I also hated that how author made it feel like Elodie could be happier with the other universe's mates which I would argue that they actually don't belong to her.
- Idk it's a mess. I'm stressed. Justice for OG Elodie and the other mates.
- Also fuck OG Elodie's mates too because they had no "valid" reason to hate her and when they learned that their ORIGINAL mate died they didn't even care? How fucked up it is? They immediately jumped into this rando (our Elodie) and were perfectly okay with moving on. Fuck off.
- I feel like they were all okay with it so that the plot would work but it didn't make sense and it made me so upset.
- Other than that, I did not like any of these MMCs, they had nothing that made me like them. I was not interested in any of them and they felt very flat, and they felt like undeveloped characters to me.
-I also did not like the world in this. Magic system was not explained clearly enough for me. It did not pique my interest. I also felt like this world was underdeveloped and flat. It's just urban fantasy I guess but the only plot that we have right now is that OG Elodie died and we are trying to find the killer. Okay! This could be a long stand alone.
- I also found myself skim a lot because some scenes were dragged a lot and they were not really doing anything for the plot. Like why is it so long? Save me.
-I normally try to not rate the books I DNF but I believe I read enough to give a valid rating.
TLDR: I did not like the mate swap thing that we have mostly. I could not get past behind it.
I am so fkn flabbergasted!!!! It’s a five star, 100% A+!!
Full review to come but just so you all know, this book is amazing, you should all read it as soon as it comes out! Oh and the AUDIO!??? PERRRRFECTION!!!!! I’m a puddle!
I need to go gather myself. Brb 🥵

Ok, now that I have time to process:
Let me just start by saying that I could easily write a dissertation of why I love this series so much but, for your sake, I’m going to try and keep it brief. 😅
Shine and Shadow is Book 2 of The Second Fate of Elodie Divine Series. It navigates the life and choices of Elodie Divine after she was basically plucked from her reality to be thrown into a different one. In this alternate reality she is living the complete opposite of what was going on in her real one (not that this one is any less real).
In book 2, Elodie is dealing with the aftermath of book 1 and it’s is such a journey!!! I knew I was going to love this book. Eva Chase has a way to write, that I knew, I just knew this book was 100% for me. I am a sucker for why choose, rejected mates, unique magic system, age gap, “he’s her PROFESSOR”, murder mystery, good plot-great spice and of course, emotional damage and this book hit all the right spots and so many more. I devoured it and if you’re like me and these tropes call to you, you’ll love this series too and will most likely binge it as well. It was impossible not to when every chapter ended in a way that it was a NEED to continue with the next.
Ok now the Audio:
I had the absolute pleasure to receive an ALC from Eva Chase and I have so much to say!!
The narrators are one of the most versatile out there. Genuinely, I was entranced by how well the portrayal of the different characters and dialogues was. Rose Dioro did a phenomenal job with Elodie and the other female characters from the book; she just blew me away. Same with Stephen Dexter!! Omg! They both did so good, performance wise. There’s only 2 narrators but it felt like a whole cast. As I was listening, I was 100% sure of which character was “talking” just because of how well they portrayed each one. The emotional weight they put into the dialogue, the different tones and even accents, it only served to enhance the whole experience. Chef kiss! Rose and Stephen have become a favorite duo of mine. If they both narrate more books together (or even alone), I’ll read them in a heart beat. 🫶🏻
I was so enthralled with the story, their performances, the whole situation going on that I didn’t even noticed that I was on the last page. My only sign was the audio saying “Shine and Shadow…” (End Credits) and then I felt like I was being unplugged from the matrix.
It was so good. So, so, so good! It kept me engaged, entertained, focused!! Elodie’s monologues and internal emotional war was top! Same with the MMC’s.
And because I said I was going to keep it “brief” (LOL) I’m going to stop here, but know that I have a million more great things to say about this book (and series in general) and will probably not shut up about it any time soon.
Huge thanks to Eva Chase for the opportunity to be part of her ARC & ALC Team and read/listen to Shine and Shadow ahead of its release. I am forever fortunate and greatful for the honor.
🌟Shine & Shadow 🌒 (The Second Fate of Elodie Devine, Book 2) by Eva Chase
😄 Holy Cannoli Batman, What a Ride! 🚕 Eva Chase Does It Again! 😄
If you thought Book 1 (Bloom & Blood) was a wild ride, buckle up your seat belts honey, because Shine & Shadow takes us on a high-speed chase! As this was an Advanced Reader's Copy (ARC) directly from Booksirens, I was blessed enough to snag this amazing second book before the masses (na-na na-na boo-boo😜)!
Booksters let me tell you—Eva Chase never fails to deliver! 😄 She is easily one of my absolute favorite authors, and this book is proof of her storytelling magic. Nonstop shenanigans, I mean it - there is never a dull moment.
🔮 The Plot & The Drama: Double the Universes, Double the Danger!:
After Elodie’s Aunt Daphne thrusts her into an alternate reality, Elodie is forced to impersonate her deceased counterpart. She has to navigate:
• Caddy Female "Friends" (honestly, can we even call them friends? More like vapid, shallow, entitled airheads)
• Conspiracies, plots, and murder attempts in not one, but two universes! 🕵️♀️
• Four unsuspecting fated matches who are morally grey, completely swoon-worthy, and yearning their hearts out. 😄
In this second installment, Elodie, Salvatore, Colson, Byron, and Asher embark on a thrilling journey to discover what their newfound bonded life can actually look like. Together, they are discovering their Glims, navigating school, and growing their relationships both mentally and physically—all while hiding their intense bonds from the other players on the board.
💞 Emotional Growth & Steamy Bonds:
What truly shines in this book is the honesty and openness that begins to bloom between the bonds. Elodie has historically been a major secret-keeper (which previously caused a massive amount of strife, guilt, and issues in her other life, largely due to her secrets surrounding what she did to Asher and Uncle Nik’s toxic influence). Seeing Elodie learn to let down her guard, rely on her men, and let them love her is pure magic. 😄 They are truly learning what it takes to build a real family together!
🎧 Audiobook Lovers, Take Note! I purchased the audiobook for Book 1 on Audible, and the narrators did an absolutely spectacular job bringing this story to life! 🎙️✨ I seriously cannot wait until the Audible version of Shine & Shadow drops because I will be adding it to my collection the second it goes live!
😱 That Cliffhanger Though...
This book is incredibly well-written, fast-paced, and absolutely action-packed. But oh my goodness, that cliffhanger! 😭 There are some massive, mind-blowing reveals at the very end that left my jaw on the floor. I am now in a state of desperate, burning need to continue on with Book 3, Blight & Bond!
My Rating: 5/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (and a million 😄 smiles!) If you love tangled mate bonds, supernatural mysteries, and fierce heroines and murder plots, you need to start this series immediately!
