Play Tough: A Single Mom Age Gap Instalove Romance

Rate this book
Bruiser
They call me Bruiser because I leave men broken on the canvas.
Because I spent ten years in prison for nearly killing a man with my bare hands.
No regrets. He deserved it.
Then Joanna walks into the Iron Pit—single mom, exhausted, cleaning up my blood.
When some drunk grabs her, I protect her without thinking, and suddenly this woman who should be terrified is bandaging my knuckles like I'm worth fixing.
She doesn't even run when I tell her about prison. She calls me brave. She believes I can be more than my worst moments.
I'm Danny Cross, and I've spent my whole life being a weapon.
But Joanna makes me want to be a shield instead.
For her. For her daughter. For the family I never thought I'd deserve.

Play Tough is a short, sweet, and steamy small-town instalove romance with a happy-ever-after. It can be read as a standalone or together with the rest of the books in the Blackwater Fighters.

These days, novellas feel like the Temu version of books. The blurb sounded great, but the delivery just wasn’t there. Also, I can’t stand how kids are written, authors always give them overly clever lines or forced “sweet” moments that end up boring me to death.
On a 100pages novella spending around 10 with the kid tea party was criminal…

If you love a romance where a hardened hero finds something soft, steady, and life-changing in the most unexpected place, Play Tough by Zoey Rose hits that emotional sweet spot perfectly.

Danny “Bruiser” Cross is exactly what his name suggests—a man built for damage. A fighter with a past that’s as brutal as his reputation, shaped by years in prison and a life spent surviving instead of living. He doesn’t pretend to be good. He doesn’t ask for redemption.

And then Joanna walks in… and looks at him like he’s already worth it.

Joanna is tired in a way that feels real—single mom, working hard, just trying to keep things together. She’s not looking for danger, not looking for complications, and definitely not looking for a man like Bruiser. But when she sees him—not the fighter, not the ex-con, but the man underneath—everything begins to shift.

What makes this story so compelling is that Joanna doesn’t “fix” him.

She believes in him.

And somehow, that’s even more powerful.

There’s something incredibly moving about watching a man who’s always been seen as a weapon start to want something different. Danny doesn’t just fall for Joanna—he redefines himself because of her. He wants to protect, to build, to belong. Not just to her, but to the small, fragile family she brings with her.

And Joanna? She’s not naive. She knows exactly who he is. But she also knows what he could be. Her strength isn’t loud—it’s in her steadiness, her compassion, and her refusal to judge him solely by his past.

The chemistry between them is intense, grounded, and emotional. Every interaction feels layered—with tension, trust, and that quiet hope that maybe love really can change the direction of a life.

And when Danny shifts from fighter to protector?

That’s where this story truly lands.

✨ Tropes to love:

Redemption arc
Protective, reformed bad boy
Single mom romance
“I’ll be your shield” energy
Grumpy/tough hero x soft but strong heroine
Found family
Emotional, character-driven romance

Play Tough isn’t just about love—it’s about second chances, about being seen beyond your worst moments, and about choosing who you want to become.

If you’re drawn to stories where the toughest man in the room falls hardest—and finds something worth fighting for instead of against—this one will absolutely stay with you.

Play Tough by Zoey Rose is the first title in the author's new Blackwater Falls: Fighters series and it was a good read.
As a steamy small town, age gap, single mum, instalove romance, the plot and storyline was interesting with the main characters of Danny/Bruiser, the older ex-convict and fighter and Joanna, a younger, curvy, single mum, both engaging.
Danny spent ten years in prison and now uses the fights at the Iron Pit to temper his rage and violence to help keep himself under control. Joanna works several jobs including the cleaning job at the fight club to make ends meet for herself and daughter but when a drunk man grabs her one night after a fight night Danny steps in to protect her. The awareness of each other sparks growing attraction to one another and Danny feels undeserving of a woman such as Joanna but even though he tells her to not get involved he can't quite walk away either.
Their mutual attraction develops to a connection and understanding that each other sees more of the person than the world does and their sizzling chemistry ignites.
This is a short, fast paced story with steam and spice, warm heart felt and found family moments that are perfect for a break time escape and easily had me hooked right to end to see how their HEA comes about.

What a beautiful hopeful story

It is so rare nowadays to read a hopeful story of redemption, second chances, and love that fights hard for a place in today's world.

Joanna and Danny have just about every brick in the deck stacked against them. Single mom, menial job, ex con, underground fight club as his only job. Yet, these two broken souls make each other whole and happy again. Their journey is small to outsiders but so important to us regular folks struggling in life.

I loved this short novella. There is passion, tenderness, love and laughter. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more of this author's work.

Bruiser/Danny makes his money as a fighter, he's been in prison and still has to overcome his anger issues, underneath he's also calm and contained. Joanna is a cleaner where he fights, he steps in one day when a drunk won't leave her alone. She's working hard to look after her young daughter, Daisy. She's compassionate and unperturbed by his choices. Good value for the money.

Play Tough is the perfect quick escape. I loved the dynamic between Danny, the protective fighter with a haunted past, and Joanna, the hardworking single mom. It hits all the best tropes—age gap, small town, and instalove—with plenty of heat and genuine, heartfelt emotion.

The "found family" moments were a wonderful touch, and the chemistry kept me turning pages right until the sweet HEA. If you’re looking for a fast-paced, spicy romance to get lost in during a coffee break, this is it! Highly recommend starting this series.

I loved this change of pace from this author. Joanna is a cleaner for after the fights and she tries to stay to herself. It doesn't stop men from trying to rough her up a little. She is shocked when Danny steps in and saves her from an awkward situation. The way these two gravitate to one another made for a really good read and I loved how the author developed this story. I so cannot wait to see where she takes us with this new series.

Danny and Joanna come together in a romance with a hardened by life hero and a soft and steady heroine. She sees him not the fighters ex-con but the man he is underneath it all. And he redefines himself because of her and her daughter.

Loved It

I loved this book. Both of the characters were down on their luck. Danny is fighting in an underground ring and Joanna is cleaning up after each fight. Loved how he took charge and cared for her and they got their HEA. It was great read and I look forward to the rest of the series

Quick

And a tad random writing with strange formatting. Not really a lot of depth. I don't know. The premise is good, but the landing was not.
