"I don't date my brother's teammates. End of story."
Or is it?
Harper's life is her career, and most guys don't vibe with it. No problem. One and done satisfies the score. Besides, after a disastrous fling with her brother's linemate she vowed it would never happen again.
Gavin sacrificed having a life for a goal he never quite netted. He's skating toward middle-age and loneliness is hitting hard. But the constant travel and demands of his job don't exactly make women swoon.
A single blazing hot hookup shakes them both off their game. Harper's convinced one isn't anywhere close to done with him. And Gavin might finally have met someone worth a work-life balance. Too bad they don't even know each other's real names.
Until they come face to face at the last place either ever expected. And Harper's forced to hide behind secretive fiery nights or risk shattering the most important promise she ever made.
This is my first read from this author and I really enjoyed the story! I love a good spicy hockey romance and this one delivered. We have good plot, good romance, good spice, and a lot about hockey!
Harper is a badass FMC and I really liked her! Immediately we jump into Harper (Nixie) and Nash (Gavin) meeting and hooking up with a one-night stand and neither one of them knows who the other really is. When they come face to face soon after and learn who the other one is...well...let's just say Harper has broken her brother's number one rule. But guess what? Neither one of them want to stop.
I really love the journey with Harper and Gavin, and I really love the hockey component. I don't want to give anything away, but it all just really works and I really like the different twist on it. I feel like we got some great character development with Harper throughout the story and she really learned what she wanted and how to deal with things in her life.
The one thing that I struggled with while reading this was the POVs. Harpers POV is written first person, but Gavin's POV is written third person. This was really confusing for me and took me until about halfway through the book to really wrap my head around it, but it was still confusing. It also wasn't always really clear when the POV was changing. Unfortunately, this did pull me out of the story some.
This book is full of spice, hockey, great banter, yearning, and a really good HEA. I definitely recommend that you check this one out if that is your vibe! Thank you to the author for the early copy to read!
There was so much I enjoyed about this book that I’m not even sure how to start this review!
I LOVED that there was a glossary of hockey terms that were used throughout the book. I’m a hockey fan but if you aren’t, this gives you the ability to understand what is being talked about. It made the story feel much more authentic to an actual hockey romance by using hockey lingo.
The FMC & MMC are introduced right away but you don’t actually find out how they’re connected until several chapters later. I loved that bit of mystery at the beginning. It made it hard to put the book down!
Queer inclusion is one of my favorite thematic elements in a sports romance because it’s still so taboo in real life. This book had just a sprinkle of queer inclusion that made me really excited for the second book in this series.
Last - and most certainly not least - the spice. My goodness, the spice. Open door. Forbidden love. So. Much. Yearning. 🥵
If sports romance is your thing, read this book. You’ll love it.
*I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed reading Coach’s Challenge because it had a well written plot and captured my attention right from the beginning. It did take me a little bit to get used to the author’s writing style of the first and third person POVs but once I did, it was easy to understand.
I am a fellow hockey fan so I enjoyed that the correct terms were used describing the game and that there’s a glossary for the hockey terms used for those who are not familiar with hockey.
I also appreciate that Harper is written as a strong FMC who is a hockey player. The personal struggles that Harper goes through which include falling in love with her brother’s coach (Nash) and sorting through commitment issues because of her family history, is well represented. Nash the MMC is very caring, respectful, and mindful of Harper’s struggles and they work through it together in their own ways.
The spice is spicy and again, well written scenes.
I would give the spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
I had the opportunity to ARC read for this author in exchange for an honest review.
Need a new hockey romance rec that actually portrays the game well? Coach's Challenge by TL Matson has it all! The plot. The game. The romance. And all the innuendos provided by Harper Phoenix!
Despite the rule to never be with another one of her brother's teammates (or anyone associated with his team) a chance encounter with Gavin Nashlund lead to a relationship neither one could stop, even after finding out about his connection to her brother's new team.
The book does jump from the end of one season to the beginning of the next without much notice (but this could also just be due to formatting), but makes sense after a couple pages into that chapter.
Overall, great read and highly recommend! She does also have a glossary at the end that explains specific hockey terms, which is great if you don't know much about the sport or are still learning!
I received this eARC from the author/publisher, but this honest review is voluntary
A one-night stand turns into something so much more than they both expected. Harper is from a well-known hockey family, and Nash is the new defensive coach on her brother’s hockey team. Despite their best efforts, these two are unable to stay away from each other despite the challenges that their relationship could cause.
Once I started this book, I was unable to put it down. I loved the character development. I especially loved how Harper was shown to grow throughout the story and truly become an even better woman. It is one of the strongest FMC I have read in a long time.
For those who don’t understand hockey, the author provides a glossary at the end of the book, which was a great unexpected touch.
This novel is full of spice and great banter between the characters.
High Spice 🌶🌶🌶🌶 Hockey Romance 🏒 Secret Romance Yearning HEA
This was the first book I have read from this author. This is a true hockey story - you are getting an insiders view to the hockey world along with the romance of course! The FMC Harper is a professional hockey player (she is badass). The story starts off with a steamy one night stand. Of course that is not the end of it - it turns into a forbidden romance as the MMC Gavin is her brother's coach. The character development was done well, you can really see the growth of them and the relationship. The style of writing was a bit different than what I am used to, but it was still well told. Lots of spice along with sweetness. This is the start of a new series (Shoot and Score), I am already hooked to read the next story as there seemed to be lots of teasers in this one for it.
TL Mason takes on an interesting take on this spicy hockey romance with a strong FMC and a third person MMC. It took me awhile to get used to her style of writing but once you get into it, it takes the book up a notch. This coach/brother’s little sister romance is always a fav trope of mine. Definitely recommend!
I really liked this book! I loved how sweet Nash was and how he was so in tune with his emotions. I loved that Harper was a pro hockey player and she could hold her own and chirp at the guys. She also had great character growth.
A one night stand that gave them a shock later. This was so good and the passion heat between them especially in the gym, well that’s one way to workout! He was all in and just had to get her on board. This was so good!!! And I can’t wait for the next book!!!
