Aeltyria has been conquered for twenty-four years. Its people stripped of magic. Its rebellion long since crushed. Aleaia Dieter was not raised to fight that fate—only to survive it. Until the war she thought was over starts again. And at its center stands Valerius di Calesia—prince, commander... and the man she should never trust. He is the empire's weapon. She is its subject. But the line between them is thinner than it should be—and far more dangerous. Because what grows between them is not soft. Not safe. And not something either of them can afford. As rebellion stirs and old powers awaken, Aleaia must Remain the empire's blade... or become the force that brings it to its knees. Because in a war built on conquest and control— love is not a weakness. It is a threat.
The first half of this book completely hooked me. The relationship between the two main characters is tender, patient, and beautifully developed. It’s very much a slow burn, and getting both of their perspectives adds so much emotional richness. Val’s gentleness toward her is especially moving, and watching their connection grow felt incredibly genuine.
There are intimate scenes throughout the book. I skipped them because they aren’t my preference, but their presence didn’t affect my rating. At times, the characters seemed hyper‑focused on physical intimacy, yet it still fits who they are and never overshadows the emotional core of the story.
The beginning is especially strong. The author introduces the characters in a way that feels natural, then moves forward in time with a seamless transition. Aaliea feels wonderfully real; her reactions, her thoughtfulness, and the way she processes her world make her easy to connect with from the start. The world is also rich and well-developed, which feels immersive.
My biggest critique is in the latter portion of the book. The pacing shifts noticeably, and the tension that had been building starts to lose momentum. Both main characters take risks that feel out of place compared to how careful and strategic they were earlier in the story. The ending also drags a bit. I felt like the story had this big climactic element, and then the story slowed down before picking up again. Personally, I was struggling to get through the end of the book. On top of that, some world-building elements and lore are introduced very late, slowing the final chapters and making them feel somewhat disconnected from the emotional arc that had been so strong.
Even with these issues, I genuinely enjoyed the book and look forward to seeing where the next books take the characters. The emotional intimacy, the character work, and the beautiful slow burn made the journey worthwhile.
“The Forged Heart”, by H.R.Vitale, is one of the best written books I have ever had the privilege to read!
The slow burn isn’t too slow and keeps you engaged, wanting more, from start to finish. The characters are so well researched for the way they should act for the time period and/or traits that they have. Romance is hard to get right and not come across as fake or cheesy, this book masterfully accomplishes what real romance would be like for most people. Not exaggerated and unrealistic. Seems like the author may be pulling from lived experiences and passions. That makes it even more compelling and relatable, even in a fantasy world.
Brings me to the world the was created, and described with an attention to detail not found in many other books, really makes you feel immersed in surroundings. Love the way the author takes the time to build up the main characters, secondary characters, even the a warhorse, and let you fall in love with them and their journey. The two main characters love for each other grows before your eyes, burns deep, and unrelenting from the moment they meet. You can feel the passion, though they don’t explore it right away because of class differences. Those differences soon fade as risks are taken and lasting connections are made that will change them forever. The ending will leave you very satisfied but begging for more.
Again, excellent storytelling, beautifully done, bravo H.R.Vitale! Let’s hope you bless us with many more from this series. If you are reading this review and like fantasy, real character building, brilliant character arch’s and a strong plot that isn’t drowned out by an unrealistic romance, you will too love this book. I can’t wait for what comes next.🖤🗡️🥰🔥
The author has created an expansive world. The reader is sucked into this world and will thoroughly enjoy their time there. This is a fantasy romance with rich characters that will draw you in. The reader will become invested in these characters and want to find out what happens to them. Take your time, savor this story — you will be so sad when it is over!.
