The Forged Heart: An Epic Romantasy

Rate this book
Aeltyria has been conquered for twenty-four years.
Its people stripped of magic. Its rebellion long since crushed.
Aleaia Dieter was not raised to fight that fate—only to survive it.
A soldier in the empire that destroyed her homeland, she has spent years learning how to endure, obey, and stay alive within enemy ranks.
Until the balance begins to break.
Until the war she thought was over starts again.
And at its center stands Valerius di Calesia—prince, commander... and the man she should never trust.
He is the empire's weapon.
She is its subject.
But the line between them is thinner than it should be—and far more dangerous.
Because what grows between them is not soft.
Not safe.
And not something either of them can afford.
As rebellion stirs and old powers awaken, Aleaia must
Remain the empire's blade...
or become the force that brings it to its knees.
Because in a war built on conquest and control—
love is not a weakness.
It is a threat.

I genuinely don't know how to write a coherent review for this book because most of my reading experience consisted of alternating between "I love this" and "this is emotionally destroying me."

Going into The Forged Heart, I had fairly modest expectations. It's a debut novel, and while the premise sounded interesting, I wasn't prepared for how deeply invested I'd become in both the story and the characters. H.R. Vitale delivered a fantasy romance that felt heartfelt, emotionally intelligent, and surprisingly immersive.

The standout for me was the character work. Aleaia and Valerius felt like people rather than archetypes. They carried trauma, guilt, regrets, and responsibilities that shaped their decisions without completely defining them. One of my biggest frustrations in romance is unnecessary miscommunication, but this book handled conflict in a way that felt refreshingly mature. When difficult conversations needed to happen, they happened. When wounds needed healing, the characters actually put in the work.

And the romance? Incredible.

This is yearning done right. The slow build felt earned, the chemistry was undeniable, and once the relationship developed, it balanced emotional intimacy and physical attraction beautifully. What I loved most was the emphasis on trust, respect, communication, and consent. The relationship never felt rushed, and every milestone felt meaningful because of the foundation that had been built first.

The worldbuilding deserves praise as well. It was present throughout the story without ever becoming overwhelming. Information was layered in naturally, allowing me to learn alongside the characters rather than sitting through long exposition dumps. As someone with aphantasia, I was also surprised by how vividly some scenes came across. There were moments where the descriptions were so strong that I almost felt like I could see them.

Emotionally, this book hit hard. Grief, guilt, healing, hope, love, belonging, identity, found family, rebellion, redemption... it seemed determined to make me feel everything, and it succeeded.

If I had to offer a small critique, there were a handful of moments where the pacing felt slightly different from the rest of the book. None of them were significant enough to impact my enjoyment, but they were noticeable in an otherwise incredibly strong reading experience.

Overall, this was a fantastic fantasy romance and an incredibly impressive debut. I absolutely plan to continue the series, and I was recommending it to friends before I even reached the final page.

If you love slow-burn romance, yearning, found family, healing journeys, emotionally mature relationships, and fantasy worlds with rebellion simmering beneath the surface, I highly recommend giving this one a try.

Ok wow! I was not ready to enjoy this book as much as i did!
The Forged Heart is the debut novel of H.R. Vitale, and yet the intricate and immersive world they have created is better than some of the most popular authors doing the rounds on tiktok!

Admittedly, the first few chapters were a little fractured, a new world with new languages and time zones to get used to is difficult for me. And when a few years pass between the first few chapters, I did get confused!
But Thats definitely a me problem! I always get confused with romantasy until i learn all the lingo!!

With that being said, that is my only critique of this book!! It was bloody brilliant!!
The plot development was evenly paced, with a great mix of emotion and action!
The romance was a sub-plot; not the main event! And i love that! the relationships built authentically, cautiously and did not overcrowd the main story with unnecessary drivvel!!!
The book has had me gripped. All of the characters are well placed and each contributes a unique perspective of the story, giving it greater depth and I cannot rave about this book enough!!
I really have had a great time reading this and i cannot wait to see what the author does next!

First off, I want to disclose that I received a free copy of this book via BookSprout and am leaving an honest review willingly.

Okay, now to the good stuff.

I. Loved. This. Book.
If you like Outlander (which I doooo) with the battles, the storyline, the characters, Jamie & Claire (DUH) ! Then you’ll like this.

Immediately I could feel Aeltyria’s politics would play a huge role, and that there was a rebellion bubbling to the surface. Every battle was fast-paced, and had consequences that followed. Throughout the book, I wanted to HUG Aleaia so hard and never let go. She’s just a girl, and truthfully so incredible. She deserves all of the love, and I’m so glad Val is such a green flag because their relationship and love blossomed so beautifully. It felt so incredibly natural, and crush-like at first. Exactly how it would in real life, and it really helped draw you into their bond. There is heart break, grief, and trauma as well as heartwarming moments, some spice, and friendship. I cannot wait to read H.R. Vitale’s next book in this saga. This is such a beautiful story, and I’m so thankful to have read it !

The Forged Heart by H.R. Vitale completely pulled me into its world from the very first chapters. The story has a beautiful slow-burn romance between Aleaia and Valerius, and their relationship develops in a way that feels natural, heartfelt, and believable. I found myself genuinely invested in both characters and eager to see where their journey would lead.

One of my favorite things about this book was the world-building. The setting feels rich and immersive without being overwhelming, and the supporting characters add so much depth to the story. Every interaction felt meaningful, making it easy to become emotionally connected to the entire cast.

What stood out most to me was the emotional connection between Aleaia and Valerius. Their relationship grows gradually, making every moment between them feel earned and genuine. The blend of romance, fantasy, and character development kept me turning pages.

The ending left me satisfied while also making me excited for what comes next. If you enjoy fantasy romance with strong characters, immersive world-building, and a slow-burn love story, The Forged Heart is definitely worth reading. I can't wait to continue Aleaia and Valerius's journey in the next book.

Some vows are worth breaking the world for.

As a fellow author who has loved following H.R. Vitale’s writing journey on Instagram, seeing The Forged Heart come to life is incredible. This debut is an absolute masterclass in romantic fantasy! The world-building is incredibly rich, the stakes are sky-high, and the slow-burn, forbidden romance between Aleaia and Valerius kept me turning pages late into the night. It is inspiring to see an indie author deliver such a polished, gripping epic. Add this to your TBR immediately

“The Forged Heart”, by H.R.Vitale, is one of the best written books I have ever had the privilege to read!

The slow burn isn’t too slow and keeps you engaged, wanting more, from start to finish. The characters are so well researched for the way they should act for the time period and/or traits that they have. Romance is hard to get right and not come across as fake or cheesy, this book masterfully accomplishes what real romance would be like for most people. Not exaggerated and unrealistic. Seems like the author may be pulling from lived experiences and passions. That makes it even more compelling and relatable, even in a fantasy world.

Brings me to the world the was created, and described with an attention to detail not found in many other books, really makes you feel immersed in surroundings. Love the way the author takes the time to build up the main characters, secondary characters, even the a warhorse, and let you fall in love with them and their journey. The two main characters love for each other grows before your eyes, burns deep, and unrelenting from the moment they meet. You can feel the passion, though they don’t explore it right away because of class differences. Those differences soon fade as risks are taken and lasting connections are made that will change them forever. The ending will leave you very satisfied but begging for more.

Again, excellent storytelling, beautifully done, bravo H.R.Vitale! Let’s hope you bless us with many more from this series. If you are reading this review and like fantasy, real character building, brilliant character arch’s and a strong plot that isn’t drowned out by an unrealistic romance, you will too love this book. I can’t wait for what comes next.🖤🗡️🥰🔥

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Forged Heart

The Forged Heart is a compelling fantasy read that leans heavily into emotion, conflict, and the consequences of power, delivering an engaging story that’s easy to get invested in. It’s the kind of book that pulls you in quickly with its central premise and keeps you turning pages thanks to a steady mix of tension and character-driven stakes.

One of its strongest aspects is the emotional core. The characters feel shaped by their past choices and the burdens they carry, and that adds weight to even the quieter moments. The relationships, especially those built around trust, betrayal, and shifting loyalties, give the story its real momentum.

The worldbuilding is solid, with enough detail to feel lived-in without slowing the pace. While some elements lean on familiar fantasy tropes, the execution keeps things engaging, and the story knows when to expand its scope and when to stay focused on character arcs. Be aware that the book contains a few dark scenes, so it’s worth checking the trigger warnings beforehand if you prefer to know what to expect.

That said, it isn’t without flaws. A few plot developments feel predictable, and certain sections could have benefited from a bit more depth or slower pacing to fully land their emotional impact. Some side characters also don’t get as much development as they deserve, which makes parts of the story feel slightly uneven.

Still, these issues don’t overshadow the overall experience. The Forged Heart succeeds in delivering an emotionally driven fantasy journey with strong character dynamics and enough intrigue to keep readers hooked.

The first half of this book completely hooked me. The relationship between the two main characters is tender, patient, and beautifully developed. It’s very much a slow burn, and getting both of their perspectives adds so much emotional richness. Val’s gentleness toward her is especially moving, and watching their connection grow felt incredibly genuine.

There are intimate scenes throughout the book. I skipped them because they aren’t my preference, but their presence didn’t affect my rating. At times, the characters seemed hyper‑focused on physical intimacy, yet it still fits who they are and never overshadows the emotional core of the story.

The beginning is especially strong. The author introduces the characters in a way that feels natural, then moves forward in time with a seamless transition. Aaliea feels wonderfully real; her reactions, her thoughtfulness, and the way she processes her world make her easy to connect with from the start. The world is also rich and well-developed, which feels immersive.

My biggest critique is in the latter portion of the book. The pacing shifts noticeably, and the tension that had been building starts to lose momentum. Both main characters take risks that feel out of place compared to how careful and strategic they were earlier in the story. The ending also drags a bit. I felt like the story had this big climactic element, and then the story slowed down before picking up again. Personally, I was struggling to get through the end of the book. On top of that, some world-building elements and lore are introduced very late, slowing the final chapters and making them feel somewhat disconnected from the emotional arc that had been so strong.

Even with these issues, I genuinely enjoyed the book and look forward to seeing where the next books take the characters. The emotional intimacy, the character work, and the beautiful slow burn made the journey worthwhile.
