ARION ZIMMERMAN is a naïve, average teenage boy with unlikely charm and a big heart. He’s also the son of the two greatest superheroes on the planet. When his abilities emerge on his 15th birthday, his life changes for the better. Now armed with super strength, speed, senses and more, he decides to follow in his parents’ footsteps and become TITAN, the young superhero that will revolutionize a generation.
LUCIAN LIEBER is a teenager that’s no different from you or me. He only has one minor difference. He’s a god. After being granted the manipulation over Energy, Time and Space by ancient beings, he finally turns his life into what he always wanted it to be…a real-life comic book. He takes on the superhero identity of QUANTUM while not only battling supervillains, but dealing with the unbelievable truth behind his parents' death.
JASMINE ROLAND is your typical, sassy, beautiful teenage girl. When she was eight, she discovered that she had abilities that the other kids didn't have. She didn't think much of it…until now. When her father comes back into her life, she begins to question what path she must follow. Now equipped with magical powers and an attitude problem, she becomes known as CIRCE, the enchanting sorceress, a superheroine with a complicated past that will make or break her relationships.
“Gifted” which I won through Goodreads Giveaways and the first in the “Guardian Saga” opens when the powers of Arion Zimmerman the son of two superheroes, one who was murdered, the other who lost his powers in an epic battle ten years before, begin to emerge on his fifteenth birthday. While training with his father Arthur Zimmerman (aka Atlas) Arion puts together a team of gifted Guardians who fight against the rising powers of darkness.
Fascinating and exciting as the Guardians take on an entourage of powerful villains including “the Superiors”, "Animon", and "Immortalis" the action never stops as they also face wild cats, sharks, explosions and fire while learning about their heritage and developing their abilities. There’s a host of subplots in this novel that revolve not only around the Guardians’ fight with supervillains like Rage, Huntress, and Nexus but reveals their heritage which for Lucien Lieber (Quantum) means his status as a god with power over Energy, Time and Space and for Jasmine Roland (Circe), ties to an arch-villain which could impact her future. Amid all the adventure and clashes Mylan Allen weaves strong elements of friendship as the Guardians learn to work together and love triangles especially with Arion, Thalia and Jasmine.
Mylan Allen has created three strong and complex superheroes in Titan (Arion Zimmerman) a double alien hybrid who’s a amiable, kind and generous teen; Quantum (Lucien Lieber) who’s good-natured and funny even though abused as an orphan in a group home; and Circe (Jasmine Roland) a foster child with a sassy, fighting spirited. Among a host of characters that infuse the plot with lively energy, excitement and adventure I expect all these personalities and others will continue to develop with each new plot.
From a technical perspective, I felt the subplots overpowered the central theme which wasn’t too obvious until near the end. I often got lost in all the action as the story kept skipping back and forth between the main characters, which for me affected the flow of the story. But this is an excellent beginning to a story line by a seventeen-year-old writer that can only get better as Mylan Allen develops his writing skill and lets his imagination flow. I would suggest an editing and formatting review but otherwise will look for future novels in this saga. I rate it 3.5.
hmmm... what can I say about Gifted... Well I'm impressed because a 15 year old names Mylan Allen wrote it... that has to say something in itself... very awesome... Mylan's story line was easy to follow... I liked the Superhero vs. Super Villain thinking... as always good always wins over evil every time... looking forward to find out what will happen in his next book... I thought it was interesting that he double spaced his text... most books I have read are not double spaced... but all in all... A super job.. His parents should be proud of him
