What if someone saw the darkest crevices of your soul —
And was drawn to you because of it, not despite it?
I confess: this book had me completely hooked… until it lost me.
For clarity, I would rate this a 3.5 if I could.
Someone who reads more for vibes and enjoys a dark book with sensual themes and a smooth MMC might rate it a 5 star — this is just my take.
This is my first ARC reading experience and I'm beyond grateful to have received an early copy, I do not take it lightly. Thank you to the author for reaching out and I hope this review does it justice.
What I loved:
1) The Atmosphere
The author has real skill with descriptions. Everything felt alive, like a real place might, which made it easy to sink into. We navigate the streets with Selena and get an immediate sense of the place and dynamics of society, we feel her rage, her guardedness, the way she's treated. The book also doesn't shy away from graphic descriptions of corpses and the like, which I found refreshing.
2) The Concept
This felt unique! The storyline was unlike anything I've ever seen: sins being confessed in a ritualistic manner that blends pain, pleasure and surrender. The way it was treated was especially fascinating, with Silas being more of an impartial, if alluring, receiver.
3) The Characters
Immediately likeable.
We ally with Selena, who's quietly oppressed by the police and underestimated throughout. We swoon and fan ourselves whenever Silas speaks in that husky, velvety way of his. Their backstories are interesting, the tension between them, palpable. Unlikely partners, they start investigating the murders together. While Selena holds her secrets close to her chest, Silas wants nothing but to pry them from her grasp. The tension that follows sizzles and crackles every time they're together on the page. They also have a bit of an evolution, with Selena learning to let go and Silas reconsidering what his faith means and what a true confession should look like.
I also absolutely loved the aunt, the dynamic between her and Selena, it felt incredibly realistic and this person truly felt like someone I might know. The aunt's prodding into Selena's love life and the way she completely MELTED when she met Silas were two of my favourite moments.
4) The murder mystery
This is the part I didn't expect. It flew over my head while the author was describing the plot (Silas took my attention, oops), but I devoured it. It's done very well, it grips you right from the start, it's gruesome, it's just what it ought to be. As the plot unfolds, I started being a little sympathetic towards the killer, which is writing done RIGHT.
So... if I loved so many things, why give it only a 3.5?
Let me explain.
1) The Characters
While likeable, their backstory was not fully expanded upon. We find out their trauma and the scars they carry, but the emotional journey doesn't land. There are multiple instances where I expected an emotional reaction, I expected them to break down, but all I got was a shrug-off and carry on. Which is a shame, because they both had immense potential.
I also couldn't really identify a flaw in either of them. Sure, they both believe things that are not great and they make some questionable decisions, but I had yet to see a genuine flaw interfering with their connection, with the story.
The biggest pain points for me were Selena's final confession and a traumatic event that Silas barely reacts to. I needed these to hit and they didn't.
2) The Pacing
This is one of the biggest issues.
The tension resolves too quickly, around the 60% mark. A few high-impact moments stack too close to each other (Selena's final confession, her surrender to Silas, discovering who the killer is, the confrontation between Silas and the killer) and none of them hit as they should.
After that, there is not enough real tension to propel the reader forward. We know who the killer is, we know why, Silas and Selena are all lovey-dovey. All that remains is stopping an evil plan. This part takes up 40% (FORTY!) of the book and is the main reason I didn't give it a 4 star. I found it difficult to get through it because the tension collapsed, some reveals and moments didn't land for me (especially a big one) and there was a bit at the end that completely undermines the stakes.
The romance aspect also felt a little rushed. Apart from Selena's reluctance to reveal her secrets and trauma, there isn't much in terms of friction between them. After they cross that part, it reads a little too perfect. We are told they love each other, we are told how attracted they are, but I would've loved one or two examples that move their relationship forward.
All in all, I think this book will work for you IF the psychological aspect of characters isn't the most important.
If you want an immersive world, two MCs that have chemistry, and a sensuous, decadent descent into what it means to confess your sins in a wholly unique way, you're going to enjoy this.

I am officially entranced by this world! I gave The Confessor a 4-star rating. It is a dark, atmospheric fantasy that explores the thin line between salvation and surrender, set in a city where magic is as unreliable as the people who wield it.
Villedor is the City of Lights, but as our FMC Selena knows, it’s also the City of Murder. Selena is an Arcane Counselor and a powerful mage whose magic is mysteriously failing her. When she crosses paths with Silas Delamort (The Confessor), she is drawn into a world of "Sacred Surrender." Silas has a God-given power to pull the deepest, darkest secrets from anyone, and the tension between his dangerous "intent" and Selena's broken magic is electric.
• The Magic System: I loved the contrast between Selena's psychic residue magic and Silas’s divine power from the god Bahuul. The idea of the "Sigil of the Beating Truth" and how confessions are handled felt so unique and visceral.
• The Dynamic: Silas is a "beautiful and dangerous" MMC. The way he teases Selena’s magic back to life through the act of confession was intense. It’s a true "enemies to lovers" feel where the battle isn't fought with swords, but with truths and vulnerability.
• The Twin Mystery: Silas’s sister, Juliet, is his complete opposite, and the secrets she keeps provide a fantastic layer of suspense. The mystery surrounding a string of murders and the "Dead Bloom Society" kept me guessing the entire time.
• Found Family: Leila, the bounty hunter, was such a standout. Having her become a quick friend to Selena provided some much-needed groundedness in a world full of cult leaders, necromancers, and psychic residue.
This was a beautiful, haunting read. The prose is gorgeous; one of my favorite lines was about magic remembering motive where steel only records wounds. It handles themes of trauma and power with a lot of grace, all while keeping the "spicy" tension at a boiling point. If you like your fantasy dark, devotional, and full of mystery, this is a must-read.
In a city built on secrets, Selena learned that the most terrifying power isn't magic; it's the freedom found in finally being seen; a 4-star confession that will leave you breathless.

Selena is already fractured when we meet her (or Re-meet her if you read The Court Wizard) - her magic broken, her past heavy, her sense of self… unstable in a way that feels intentional. Watching her move through this world, especially one shaped by ritual and confession, made her feel less like a heroine being “fixed” and more like someone being revealed piece by piece.
And then there’s Silas Delamort.
He’s not loud. Not chaotic. Not even traditionally cruel.
He’s controlled. Devout. Intimate in a way that feels more unsettling than overtly aggressive.
Everything about him is restraint and precision - the way he listens, the way he pulls truth out of people, the way desire is woven into something that feels like ritual instead of indulgence. It’s not just attraction - it’s submission to something deeper, and that dynamic is what makes the tension in this book hit so hard.

A former magister turned arcane counselor who is barely holding it together her powers are fading, her past is haunting her, and her job is basically “clean up everyone else’s mess while ignoring your own.” Relatable. Exhausting. Iconic.
Then we have Silas Delamort… and listen this man is not your typical morally gray love interest. He’s morally pitch black with a holy complex. A self-proclaimed confessor for a god of undoing, he offers “absolution” to the elite through rituals that blur the line between salvation and straight-up indulgent darkness. Spiritual guidance? Maybe. Sin management? Definitely.
And the tension? UNHINGED.
Their dynamic is this delicious push-pull of control, vulnerability, and “this is probably a terrible idea but I’m going to do it anyway.”
But it’s not just vibes and spice there’s a genuinely gripping mystery underneath it all. The Dead Bloom Society brings in necromancy, ritual killings, and a level of horror that keeps the stakes razor sharp. While the City Watch plays by the rules, Silas and Juliet are out here rewriting them entirely and honestly? Sometimes you get why.

There’s something dangerously addictive about the way he offers both release and pleasure through confession, and honestly? I would gladly spill everything to him 🖤
Then we have Selena—powerful, commanding, and absolutely magnetic. She’s a mage working alongside the police, but there’s a catch: her magic isn’t fully working. Watching her slowly reclaim her power as she reveals pieces of her dark past was SO satisfying. The way she carries herself? Pure authority. She owns every room she walks into, even while hiding her vulnerability—and I loved that contrast.
The story pulls you into a dark investigation where someone is targeting men… not just any men, but truly awful ones. As Selena and Silas work together, the tension (in every sense) builds beautifully. I did figure out part of the mystery about halfway through—but that didn’t ruin a thing. The ending still managed to shock me, especially with a moment that had me thinking, “oh HELL no—take them out immediately.” 😳
This book does not hold back. It’s twisted, detailed, and unapologetically dark—and that’s exactly what made it impossible to put down. The descriptions, the intensity, the morally gray edges… all of it just worked.

As Selena and Silas work together, the tension (in every sense) builds beautifully. I did figure out part of the mystery about halfway through—but that didn’t ruin a thing. The ending still managed to shock me, especially with a moment that had me thinking, “oh HELL no—take them out immediately.” 😳
This book does not hold back. It’s twisted, detailed, and unapologetically dark—and that’s exactly what made it impossible to put down. The descriptions, the intensity, the morally gray edges… all of it just worked.
If you love dark, steamy romance with power dynamics, mystery, and a touch of the forbidden, this one is absolutely for you.
And seriously… thank you to the author for that wild ride 👏📖

This book was such an enjoyable read! I loved how unique the story felt, especially with that strong murder mystery element woven throughout. And that twist? I mean we sort of get hints through out the book, but it’s not until one particular scene that my suspicion becomes clear, and I liked the way that particular scene was written, this book kinda gave Sherlock Holmes vibes.
I also preferred this portrayal of Selena much more than in The Court Wizard. Here, she felt more grounded, whereas before she came across as overly desperate for the court wizard’s attention, which I didn’t enjoy as much.
I LOVE SILAS CHARACTER SO MUCH! I love what he represented! I Don’t have words but if he was real I would surrender to him just as Selena did 🔥🥵
V.M.’s writing style really stands out. The descriptions of the settings are vivid, and the emotional depth of the characters genuinely pulls you in. I really like to read weird plots sometimes. And this one is just the right amount of weirdness for once in awhile. Something that isn’t cliche and make you curious of the plot. This story involves religion, murders, crucifix and torture (consensual) that could make it hard to put it away.
I know it's weird because of some fictional religion that just makes sense despite the weird method of confession. It sounds weirdly make sense (in a fictional way) especially coming from Silas because the way he was portrayed as a religious man is really spot on except how horny he was for Selena. Okay maybe religious men might be a bit too horny. This man could make out as a cult leader if he wants to.
The whole mystery murders combined with cult and religion is really good and everything connects nicely like puzzle pieces. And even though it’s a second book in the same universe, it’s completely okay to read as a standalone and you won’t feel left out or missing out on anything important.

I really enjoyed the blend of fantasy and crime—it made for a unique and engaging read.
However, the magic system wasn’t clearly explained and felt a bit confusing at times. I found myself wondering if reading other book set in this world might have helped me better understand it. Silas’s powers, tied to his god Bahuul, were also somewhat unclear.l, but I think that was meant to be the case? It definitely gave him a mysterious vibe!
That said, I did enjoy watching Silas slowly unravel toward the end—it added an interesting layer to his character. The conclusion, though, felt a little rushed, especially in the epilogue.
The spice was definitely well done.

It is not necessary to have read The Court Wizard, but you’ll enjoy the FMC even more. Silas is our MMC…oh Silas, hot as hell, that’s what he is, and very devoted 😮💨. Emotions run high in this book; guilt is a very strong subject and how it changes us completely. Remorse, or lack thereof and faith, and how often it can be absolutely blind. If book one was like waiting for an elastic to snap, this one was like waiting for a pressure cooker to burst. I love V.M’s books and I’m waiting, biting may nails, for the other 2.

This story was amazing! V. M. Couture has a genuine talent for storytelling, and I truly hope she continues doing what she does.
Selena and Silas have one of the best dynamics I’ve read in a long time; I particularly loved how Silas’s obsessive nature was balanced by his caring side. Both characters showed great development throughout the book.
My only minor gripe was Selena’s total reliance on her magic. Because she didn't know how to defend herself otherwise, she felt a bit like a 'damsel in distress' during battles.
Aside from that, the story was incredibly immersive—it sucked me in so deeply that I forgot the real world existed for a while. Sometimes we all need a break from reality, and this book provided the perfect escape.

I rated it 4.5 stars, it was so so good. It started off a bit slow (which is why it’s not 5 stars) but picked up quickly and I ended up loving it. The ending was the perfect conclusion to the story and I love the main characters and how they interact with each other. Overall I really enjoyed my time ARC reading this and I would definitely recommend it to someone who loves fantasy and wants to get into dark romance (or the other way around). The author is an amazing writer and so so nice to communicate with, it was a lovely experience and I would definitely read her next book!

The second book in this excellent series (you can read them in any order) is set in a dark city with Gothic vibes where a serial killer seems to be targeting a particular kind of people.
The main characters, Selena and Silas, meet during the investigation and the evolution of their relationship through Silas' sensual rituals is captivating.
The writing style is addictive and you'll finish the book more quickly than you expect. I strongly recommend!

The story and concept of the book is so intriguing! I loved the magic system and the world they’re living in. It was a little slower to start but I binged the last 60%ish! If there is another book I would read it! I’d be interested in seeing more of the other magic types are and the school! So cool!

Absolutely stunning! Most definitely not something I would’ve picked up off the shelf but I’m glad I had the opportunity to read this!
I loved the characters, especially the MC!! The plot twist at the end had me in a chokehold. I cried, I giggled, I even contemplated throwing the book a few times, but I couldn’t stop reading in order to throw it.

Wow wow wow! I felt the characters pain, struggles and love. This is one tale that's definitely haunting and beautiful. Mystery, suspense, magic, and romance. The world reminds me of old fantasy stories that I read in high school and I just don't see often anymore. I want more!

I'm not typically one for religious tones to my fantasy, but the reverence of ritual was well respected, and fit well within the story. I was actually excited to see how the premise would be fleshed out in a romantasy, and was pleasantly surprised. The contrast of brutality and tenderness carried throughout, and I loved the growth and devotion in multiple facets for the characters. Well done!
