Loved this one. Good amount of post-apocalyptic stuff like scavenging/issues with other humans, and with two MCs who are drawn to each other but maybe don't know how to people anymore. There's some pushing away, but there's also maturity about it. I can't explain it well rn but I enjoyed their story.
The FMC was a badass doctor. We love to see it. She's so competent and assured, it was refreshing to read about.
This would have been a 5 star for me if there were less telling and more showing. The author writes well, and I was compelled by the emotions that were being displayed. I just wish we got to see more of what happened instead of hearing about it.
It is a short story (though it felt longer than 133 pages? Istg there were more words than I'm used to in books at that length but I didn't mind), so that does explain some of it. If this were written as a full length novel with more description/showing, I would snatch it up and devour it swiftly.
Also a few continuity errors, but they weren't horrible.

I would like to read more in this world. I thought the setting was interesting. We don't get a lot of information about what caused the fall. But its called the Bloom. It destroyed some cities, plant life, and caused some people to become zombies...but not everything or everyone. But I do like the mix of MC and post-apocalyptic.
I didn't mind his character. I thought he was expected of a MC character. But she was a third year med student with the ego of a successful doctor. I thought it was a bit strange that she was the ONLY medical professional alive for 200 miles. But we need plot. I found her character so frustrating and inconsistent. She obviously needed more time in school (I'm pretty sure she left a tourniquet on someone's arm for too long). I might pick up more in this series for a quick read but not if there will be more characters like her.
There were also several other small writing and plot inconsistencies. I hope this was a human author and not AI book.

There was a lot of telling instead of showing, which made the characters and world hard to connect with. Was a quick read. The author tries a little too hard to sound deep and profound---a bit dramatic, IMO. Needs a better editor too.

What a shockingly prolific author. After finishing this book, I went to see how many stories this “author” has written… hundreds, really? And all of these have been published since January 2026?
I started to get a little suspicious at some inconsistencies that a human should have easily caught. For example, the fmc has been handcuffed (with her hands behind her back) yet she miraculously holds the mmc around the waist on the motorcycle ride back to the compound. That’s some talent girl!
Whether this is AI written, or an actual human author, it wasn’t horrible. But, I really would like to support actual human artists.
I saw him, and the seeing was dangerous, because once you see someone — really see them, past the armor and the posture and the carefully maintained facade — you can't unsee them. They're in you then. Part of your internal landscape, as permanent as a scar.

compassion in surviving
I thought Maren was brave, courageous and strong. It takes courage to survive when you’re alone. The strength to survive by yourself is immense because it is only yourself in a dangerous world. Then the bravery to leave the people you love behind to make sure you survive is beyond anything else I can describe. These are the best words to describe her survival but then there is compassion, loyalty and caring. When Maren cares as we have seen with Shepherd she shows those characteristics. I loved them together and I am hopeful we see them in future books.

Gripping
I have read many of Tessa Knox books, but this was the best so far. The background of the post apocalyptic world combined with two characters that you want to find a belonging for. It isn't your typical formulaic HEA, but a story of two people finding home in a lost world.

wow wee
Look I’m all for a mc romance and I love a great dystopian read, but this combined both seamlessly !
Well written with deep characters and well thought through backstory,plot points, and twists. I truly can’t say enough good things about this book. If this trend continues this series will be amazing.

Rust & Ruin was a good book to read

I like it.
A good read. I like it. This dystopian story has lots of action from the very beginning til the end. Good romance as well.
