Waiting in hospital rooms. Waiting for a heart that would never come. Waiting to actually live instead of just survive.
Now, with a second chance beating in my chest, I have a list of things I need to do before it’s too late. The only problem? I’m too shy, too reserved, and too alone to do any of them.
Enter Rowan Pierce. The captain of the Kings of Hart U hockey team. The Golden boy with legendary luck. He’s also the most distracting, infuriatingly handsome man I’ve ever met, and for some reason, he’s volunteered to be my partner in crime.
Rowan
My life was a highlight reel until it wasn't.
One traumatic event shattered my luck, my confidence, and my sense of self. Now I feel like I’m barely holding it together. The ice feels foreign, and my friend’s expectations feel too big to handle.
Then I meet Millie. She’s quiet, fragile, and beautiful. With her, I’m not the captain or the lucky charm. I’m just a guy helping a girl chase the life she was scared she would never have.
As we cross items off her bucket list, the pull between us becomes impossible to ignore. And when she starts experiencing strange, terrifying things tied to her new heart, I realize I’m not just falling for her. I’m fighting for her sanity, for our future, and against a force that can’t be seen.
Fate may have given us a second chance but that doesn’t mean there aren’t strings attached.
If you go into Lucky Shot by Willa Wren expecting a chill college hockey romance… no such luck ❤️
This is very much “we should not be doing this (we are absolutely doing this)” energy with a side of chaos and feelings nobody planned for.
You’ve got: College hockey player who should be focused on literally anything else FMC who somehow becomes his entire problem and a situation that starts messy and just… stays messy
The MMC? Immediate downfall. Like he starts out acting normal-ish and then very quickly it’s: “this is casual” → “why is she everywhere” → “actually I would ruin my life for her”
No gradual build. Just vibes and poor decision-making.
The FMC holds her own though..she’s not just along for the ride. She pushes back, calls him out, and doesn’t just fold the second he starts acting obsessed (even though… he absolutely is).
Also this book thrives on:
Tension that’s not even trying to be subtle Teammates who 100% know what’s going on and that constant “this is a bad idea but it’s already too late” feeling
Like the denial phase? Extremely short. The “we’re fine, this is nothing” phase? Embarrassing for both of them.
Is it messy? Yes. Did I read it fast anyway? Obviously. But Im going to be honest, this wasnt my favorite book in this series, I prefer the first two over this one.
This is peak college hockey romance chaos with fast feelings and zero self-control.
You’re here for:
“it’s casual” (it’s not) MMC who spirals immediately tension + bad decisions + vibes
A surprisingly sweet hockey romance with a supernatural twist I did not see coming, Lucky Shot proved to be a good introduction to this author, leaving me invested in the Harts U world she created.
Millie and Rowan couldn’t be more different in their personalities - one a shy and awkward heart patient, and the other a popular hockey captain. I think that’s why they clicked so well together, and though not without their own faults, as their relationship progressed they more than made up for each other’s shortcomings.
Kudos to the author for being inclusive of heart health representation and I found Millie’s experiences and feelings well written.
Enjoyed this book and I plan on reading the others from this series.
Lucky Shot by Willa Wren is the story of Millie, who just had a heart transplant and wants to live life to the fullest, and ice hockey player Rowan, who does not know what to do after a near death experience and everything feels off. When the two meet, sparks fly. Rowan is entertained by Millie, who is a bit of fresh air. As Millie has a bucket list, he wants to help out. But when Millie starts to have strange dreams and hears voices, the story really picks up.
This book was such a great read! It is not your typically hockey romance, but a story with a paranormal twist. Millie is a great character, full of life and says whatever she wants, but in a cute way. Rowan is a bit depressed, he has lost his luck, but he also is a wonderful character. Their interactions are great and I loved the banter between them and how Rowan steps up to help Millie make sense of her dreams. As a reader you have some idea where the story is going, but Willa Wren writes in such a way that you want to go on reading.
The writing style is flowing, fast paced and I had a really hard time putting the book down. The book is filled with humour, but also with drama, with real emotions, trauma and heartbreak, but there is also the romance story we love to read about.
Lucky Shot is a really great novel and I can absolutely recommend reading it. It is one of the best (hockey) romances I have read lately. I can’t wait to read the next book Willa Wren will write!
Two people who were dealt difficult fates and found their way to each other. Hockey romance meets paranormal twists. The story of Millie and Rowan is filled with both tragedy as well as hope and second chances after thinking that it was the end. Millie is a sunny and still badass girl, despite what she had to go through. Now with a new heart in her chest and the new life she was given due to that, she wants to live to the fullest. It seems fated when she meets Rowan, who is willing to help her fulfill her list of wishes. Rowan, who lived through a tragedy that changed him in every way, is trying to find his confidence again. When everything on and off the ice seems to break, he finds Millie. Their chemistry, and the way these two ultimately helped each other heal, was amazing to read about. Despite the pain of what happened to them, their blooming love is nothing but beautiful in the end. The story takes you on a journey, and the unique twists and turns will have you want to keep reading.
I truly forgot how much this series keeps you wanting more.
Its the perfect mix of Hockey Romance and a dash of paranormal fun, that will keep you hooked to what's going to happen next. Millie is so easy to love, and I just want to be her friend!
This book picks up straight after the events of book 2 and Rowan is still troubled and lost his groove and once he meets Millie his life starts to move in the right direction.
Having all our favourites from the first two books come back has been like coming home from a long day of travelling, its relieving and oh so welcoming, I would highly recommend this book as well as the previous books in the series! For fans of Hockey Romance, Paranormal Twists, Slow Burns, Found Family, and a dash of Spicy Goodness.
I really enjoyed this book! This is the third book in the Kings of Hart U series! It’s a college hockey paranormal romance book!
This book checked all the boxes for me! Hockey, paranormal, and a little bit of spice! Rowan and Millie are my favorite couple in this series! I loved reading their journey together! I loved how much Rowan cared for Millie!
I loved reading Millie’s journey through her health journey. I also loved reading about her journey after healing.
I absolutely loved the paranormal aspect in this book and it definitely made a great twist and mystery!
If you love Hockey and a nice paranormal twist you’ll love this book!
The story between Millie and Rowan has been one of my favorite this year. Millie is 6 months post op from a heart transplant and Rowan is only half living after an accident almost claimed the life of his best friend’s girl. Millie was such a personality, you couldn’t help but adore her. I loved the back and forth in their relationship, the banter, the emotions, as they tried to figure it out. At first I didn’t really love the supernatural aspect, this book didn’t real feel like it belonged, but by the end I did and wouldn’t have changed it. It was one where you just needed to trust the author. Maybe it’s different if you read the first books in the series, I have not, but this can absolutely be read as a standalone.
I fully admit I was team Rowan and Stella during book two. But in the end Ms Wren knew who they needed and they found their perfect match.
It was heartbreaking the guilt Rowan has lived with since book one. But he shouldn’t feel guilty for something he had no control over. Yea I know easier said than done.
Millie is an absolute bad ass hero of what she’s had to deal with since a baby. I’m so glad that she had to great support system in her parents.
Anna and Lucy break my heart. We may not know their full story. But what we know that was soul sisters who had a one of a kind friendship.
I have been waiting for Romans story since I finished book two, I'm so happy he finally got his HEA!!! That man deserved it. The relationship between these two was so beautiful, the trauma he is going through and the new life she is experiencing after spending her life in the hospital, takes you on such a wonderful journey. I loved how two polar opposites brought each other together and helped heal without even knowing. Sprinkle in the hockey romance and paranormal twist and you've got such a fun suspenseful book.
I am loving this series! Im enjoying the supernatural feel to these stories, ghosts, premonitions and all that. It gives the story an extra edge. Throw in the ice hockey, hunky players and you have yourself a winner!
This is a story i did have to go back and reread the previous ones though just to ensure I was fully up to date. Seeing Lily again and seeing how that expierence Rowan and her went through and how it is still impacting Rowan in every aspect of his life was raw, felt realistic as, yeah I could see something like that impacting every facet of my life as well.
I’ve read all the previous books from this series and honestly I seems to can’t get enough of them.
This one was no different then the other ones. Millie and Rowan each battling their own demons. Meeting each other and spending time make them fall for each other.
But the question is will they be able to fight with the biggest demon ?
3.5⭐2🌶️ Standalone #3 in The Kings of Heart U Series Millie and Rowan Millie is so funny, her internal dialogue cracks me up. I like how this book showed what it's like to have a chronic illness/organ donation and all the other ways it affects one's life. I do feel like the climax (no, not that kind 😜) was rushed, and to close to the end.
This book was everything I never knew I needed. The instant connection between Rowan and Millie even just on a friend level to start was so well done. The banter and sass had me giggling the whole time I read. The relationships Rowan has and the way they just bring Millie into the folds. I need another book!
Millie a women that been sick whole life now well meets Rowan who if you read book before now trying to figure out life . Millie is such a spitfire trying to live finally and Rowan is right there . What a great story . Loved it
Better late than never; I have finally finished this book. I received an ARC and voluntarily leave this honest review. Although a bit slow to start I really enjoyed this book. It was great to see Rowans HEA and Millie is perfect for him.
It's a wholesome story that shines a light on the difficulties that come with having a transplant and how isolating a life could be with a chronic illness. I love the dynamics of rowens group of friends, welcoming, caring, loyal, and just wholesome. It was quite refreshing how crass she could be for someone so sheltered. Chapter 16 Beau made me cry. Please end up giving him someone special, too.
At first, i was not a huge fan of the flashback memories/ghost part as it just seemed way too far-fetched when it's the brain that stores memories and not the heart. I, however, think if I had read Lily's book, it may have got on board easier. But as it went on and prophetic dreams were mentioned, i looked the term up and learned how they are real experiences that those who have had heart transplants go through. I love learning through reading experiences this way. I still didn't feel I got on board with the idea of ghosts, but the rest of the book was worth the read to continue. Maybe if it was made more apparent in the blurb rather than hinted, i would have gone in expecting this direction, and i would have given it 5 stars instead.
