How to Avoid Dying in India

Rate this book
From the Preface: "This short book looks at the eight most common causes of death among people engage with India from teh outside, either living or working with teams here. It puts a name to those things that slowly wear you down until one day you are shouting and cursing in the middle of a mobile service shop because all you want to do is change the address on your bill. It also give a few strategies to avoid falling prey to the causes, and serves as an introduction to the articles on my website that take these topics to a deeper level.

Very short booklet on 8 cultural traits in India that can be stumbling blocks for ex-pats who go to India to live and work: role of power and position, highest value on relationships, vast diversity that is India, murky concepts of right and wrong, indifference to client/customer needs/desires, super-sensitivity to insult, event-oriented view of time (delay), ingrained disorder (lack of western logic). Pretty superficial and I thought the strategies were pretty weak. Much of what is said about India would also be true of East Africa and, I suspect, much of the developing world. From my experience (28 years) in East Africa, I'd say Miller identifies the primary cultural issues that cause stress for ex-pats here.
