Carmelina Dahl is used to taking care of herself. Growing up below the poverty line with an addict for a mother, she hardly had another choice. At twenty-six years old, she still guards her heart like a penalty box, but her journalism career is well on its way and she wants a white-picket-fence life of her own. On a sweltering Friday afternoon, she tags along to a Major League Soccer game with her friend from the sports-desk, but she doesn’t expect to strike the attention of “golden boy” Shane Mitchell, the goalkeeper for Austin United, infamous for his hard-partying ways and love of playing the field (in more ways than one). Carmelina is no fan of soccer, jocks, nor this particular Texan soccer-jock. She refuses to be another notch on his bedpost, despite the fireworks of desire exploding between them both. Nonetheless, the tournament for Carmelina’s heart has hardly begun, and Shane is used to getting what he wants. With eyes for her alone, he's not about to back down. Possessive and domineering, this man lives to save and plays to win. The walls around Carmelina’s heart were fortified long ago, but this cocky and confident soccer goalie is just the man to tear them down. Shane might be hell-bent on proving that some people are worth trusting, but little does he know that Carmelina guards a “red-card” worthy secret of her own. When it comes to the woman he loves, will Carmelina’s truth even the score, or prove too offside for Shane to handle? Standalone novel with HEA - no cliffhanger ending. Recommended for 18+ due to language and sexual situations.
Jennifer Watts is from suburb of Vancouver, Canada. She studied creative writing at the University of British Columbia and has worked in finance for the last 17 years. In her spare time she loves to play soccer, drink wine and discover new authors.
I had a lot of issues with this story. It was recommended to me bc it had a crazy jealous and possessive H. That much was true. I liked the H bc he was REALLY into the h. However, the h was the reason I didn't like this story. She grew up with an alcoholic mother who did nothing but drink and party. The h resents her mother for not caring for her as a child. Unfortunately, the h is no different than her mother. She claimed to love beer and drank frequently throughout the story. She had no issues with getting drunk and even flirting with guys while she is with the H. I'm sorry but next to smoking, drinking is a huge turnoff for me.
The h also made extra money by working as a waitress in a topless bar. Whenever someone didn't come in to do their set the h would do one. She keeps this a secret from the H and even lies on several occasions to cover it up. Of course, he finds out when his entire soccer team sees her topless. The h claims she doesn't like doing it and only does it for extra money but I didn't believe her. She had favorite outfit that she kept for the topless dances and was very comfortable with dancing.
Of course, the h has a gay BF, don't they always. He is there to do the typical, "Hey girl you need to sleep with a HOT guy." (Insert eye roll!!)
When the h meets the H she keeps turning him down bc she didn't want to be just another notch on his belt. She was super annoying and gave a lot of attitude. Her friend who accompanied her on the job was also a raging drinker and was frequently drunk. She would also sleep around. I was pretty disgusted by these characters. I don't know why authors believe that people in their 20s want to drink and party like frat boys. Many don't drink alcohol at all.
It will come as no surprise that the h was incredibly beautiful but had low self esteem, don't they always. Everyone kept complementing the h on her beauty and she would ignore it. Even her boss would hit on her and would not give up. I frankly didn't see what was so attractive about her. It was pretty annoying that so many characters needed to constantly boost the h's self esteem. Of course, this also meant that when the H's ex insults the h, she can't handle it and immediately falls apart.
Near the end there is a separation and I was very disappointed at the way the H handled it. He had been so devoted but then nothing. He could have found the h if he really wanted but he kept on playing soccer. This story and its characters were a huge let down.
Cute story. He is a hot super soccer star and she is a hot girl just trying to survive. She does not put with his BS and she will not agree to go out with him. He is not use to girl saying no and making him work for it. Really cute story!
Carmelina Dahl is a twenty six year old full-time journalist’s assistant and part-time waitress who is struggling to not only pay her own bills, but to support her alcoholic, ungrateful mother. Aside from her best friend, Matty, Carmelina keeps most other people at arm’s length. Her abusively dysfunctional upbringing has left her mistrustful and closed off to relationships. That is until she meets hunky soccer player Shane Mitchell.
Shane Mitchell is a Texas golden boy, with a fantastic job and a loving, supportive family. On the surface, Shane seems to have it all, but just under the surface is a dark and sad past. When Carmelina and Shane connect, the sparks turn into tumultuous fireworks.
On His Turf is a modern-day love story with a definite edgy-ness to it. The sex scenes are graphic enough to be considered erotica – hence the 18+ warning that the author has wisely added to the book’s description.
I would have liked to have seen Shane’s caveman-attitude dialed back a bit. I did have some difficulty imagining Carmelina’s strong-willed character so readily accepting of some of the book’s rougher sex scenes. Parts of the book were somewhat predictable and I found myself correctly guessing what would happen next. However, there are only so many boy-meets-girl scenarios available and most follow the same formula. Jennifer Watts has added a few plot twists to prevent the story from being overly predictable.
I would recommend On His Turf to anyone looking for a fun, quick poolside read.
I absolutely loved this story! Of course there's quite a few grammar and spelling mishaps but I'm not a stickler for that... I really don't like how quickly everything worked out for the HEA because there was so much emotion and detail in the rest of the book. The epilogue, however, was AMAZING!! There's something about getting to see what happens to the characters you go on a journey with throughout a story. All in all, I loved it
I was very pleased with this book! It was enjoyable and light enough to make it a great pool side read. I happened upon this book and I am so glad I did:) The characters were relatable and easy to love. I really enjoyed her relationship with her best friend and how it changed over time. I'll definitely be looking for more by this author in the future.
I absolutely loved the H. Strong and sure! However the h had no self-worth and was hypocritical to say the least, constantly got on my nerves. She is the only reason i did not give this book a higher rating.
I was excited about the athlete aspect of this book. I have never read a soccer romance book... But I did feel like I could predict a lot of the book before it happened. I think there was a good mix of frustration and a good mix of everything working out. I really enjoyed the epilogue, it had a lot of really good sensory descriptions.
This was a predicable but great sports romance book. Carmelina is a strong woman who had to grow up with a drunk of a mother. Because of this she knows what she wants and how to go for it. Shane is the typical cave man that we have read several times, I am not complaining about this. I loved the way they were together and really enjoyed reading this.
Good characters, Bossy, overprotective male. Good HEA. I had a fees issues towards the end but it worked itself out. I think the drama at the end could have been solved easier but it ended up ok.
