3.5 stars. Very useful volume; not always satisfying; the claims to be operating scientifically and objectively are a somewhat humorous reminder that the book hails from a previous generation of scholarship. Still, its findings and its attention to the details of the texts demand to be wrestled with. I hope to write more shortly.

This purports to be the work of a study group of Roman Catholic and Protestant scholars, however the Protestants are all Lutheran and not representative of the broad range of theological positions.
