Elise Carter has perfected the art of holding it together.

As a senior marketing director, she commands boardrooms with precision. As a wife, she's built a beautiful life with Graham, warm, intimate, and deeply loving. But after losing a pregnancy in a devastating accident, Elise has learned to brace herself. To manage her anxiety. To make everyone comfortable, even when it costs her peace.

When both families descend for a weeklong visit, Elise does what she always she hosts, she smooths over tension, she makes space. Graham believes his mother will eventually soften. That love alone will be enough. That time will fix what he won't defend.

He's wrong.

One careless comment at dinner detonates everything Elise has been holding back. And as she walks out the door, Graham is left with a truth he can no longer love without protection isn't love at all.

Now he has to prove that choosing her means more than words. It means showing up, publicly, fiercely, and without hesitation. Because Elise isn't asking for perfection. She's asking to feel safe in her own home again.

A deeply emotional, no-breakup romance about marriage, grief, and what it means to be chosen, every single day. Guaranteed HEA.

Let me tell you something: Sunday Dinner is the kind of book that feels soft and cozy until you realize Zahara Woods is quietly dragging every married person in the room — lovingly, but still dragging.

Elise? My girl is doing everything. Cooking, cleaning, working, holding the whole house together with emotional duct tape… and somehow still feeling invisible. And then Graham’s family shows up — especially his mother with her Olympic‑level judgment — and he just lets it happen. No defense. No “hey, chill out.” Just vibes. If you’re married, you felt that in your spirit.

But here’s the thing: Graham isn’t a villain. He’s a good man who got a little too comfortable, a little too used to Elise being the one who keeps everything running. And that’s what makes this book so real. It’s not about big betrayals or dramatic blowups — it’s about the tiny, everyday cuts that build up when you’re married and tired and trying your best but missing each other anyway.

This is low angst, low spice, but the emotional truth? Oh, it’s seasoned. It’s simmered. It’s Sunday‑dinner slow‑cooked.

And listen — if you’re not married, this book might have you yelling at the pages. You might be like, “Girl, LEAVE.” But if you are married? You’ll be nodding like, “Yep. Been there. Felt that. Survived it.”

What I loved most is that Woods gives us something we don’t get enough of in romance: a couple who is already married, already in love, already committed — but still human. Still flawed. Still figuring it out. Watching Elise and Graham work through their mess with honesty and tenderness felt refreshing. No cheating, no chaos, just two people learning to see each other again.

This was my first Zahara Woods book (read in exchange for an honest review), and I’m genuinely glad I picked it up. It’s rare to find a romance that celebrates long‑term love without pretending it’s perfect. This one is gentle, kind, and quietly powerful.

If you’re married, this book will feel like someone finally put your unspoken frustrations on paper. If you’re not… you might side‑eye Graham the whole time. But either way, it’s a sweet, grounded story about choosing each other even when life gets loud

⭐⭐⭐✨3.75/5 for the story and plot
🌶️🌶️2/5 spice

Who’s Coming to Dinner?
Sunday Dinner by Zahra Woods is the third book that I have read by this author. Much like her previous novels, Sunday Dinner is an emotional, well-rounded story featuring two extremely likable main characters as they navigate the pitfalls of life, love and family. While not a traditional “suspense” novel, readers anticipate the eventual derailment of peace as tensely as we would in an espionage story!
Friends before they were lovers, Elise and Graham Carter have a loving and nurturing relationship. Elise suffers from an anxiety disorder and Graham is beyond supportive. In fact, he is ALMOST the perfect partner. His one major defect lies in his handling of his mother. Traci, Graham’s mother, is the personification of a Queen Bee (we would really leave those two ees off). She is passive and constantly makes barbed remarks designed to inflict maximum damage while “appearing” to be unintentional. And Graham has thoughtlessly invited his entire family to visit during the week that Elise is hosting her family after a two-year separation. With so many people in one house, his mother’s constant putdowns, his father’s nonengagement, what could possibly go wrong? Will this be the time that Graham speaks up and puts his mother in her place for once and for all or will this “perfect” partner fail Elise again?
Conclusion:
Ms. Woods gives her readers another emotionally decadent story with intoxicating passion and engaging characters. While deeply and passionately in love, Elise and Graham allowed their communication to falter. They are still grappling with a devastating loss without conveying their feelings and true expectations. Adding devious, denigrating Traci to the mix was a real recipe for disaster. When the floodgates finally broke, the air was cleared but at what cost? Throughout the story, it was obvious that Graham had good intentions, I was gratified when those intentions became actions. Final words, Ms. Woods continues to entertain through her plots and to satisfy our need for emotional catharsis. I look forward to her next concoction.
Favorite Lines:
Not because he was cruel, but because even angry, Elise Carter was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen.

“I forgive you,” she said, and the words landed heavier than he expected. “But don’t do it again.”

At home, she could be soft. Anxious a little, yes, but soft. With Graham, she didn’t have to perform.

He was going to have to buy more books.
“It’s like when you grow up in something,” he said. “You normalize it. You think that’s just how things are.”

“She’s been running around all week,” he said. “Cooking. Cleaning. Making sure everyone’s comfortable. And your family treated her like the help.”

“Forgiven,” she said softly. Then she pulled back, meeting his eyes. “Very cautiously.”

As someone who is married, this story hit home for me. Sunday Dinner is a reminder that marriage isn’t where the work ends, it’s where it really begins. A lot of people think everything gets easier after the “I do,” but this book shows the reality: Which is it takes effort, patience, and constantly working to keep things together.

I also appreciated the representation in this story. The couple is biracial, but it isn’t overly explained. I picked up on it through context, which made it feel natural.

Elise really stood out to me. I loved that she didn’t step outside of her marriage just because she was upset. That says a lot about her character and her commitment.

Now the mother-in-law… she definitely tested my patience 😅. I felt like she could’ve been checked early on, but I understood why Elise handled it the way she did. She was trying to be respectful and expected her husband to speak up. That situation really highlighted how important it is to set boundaries with extended family, because when you don’t, it can cause real issues in a marriage.

Overall, I loved how this book showed both love and the reality of marriage. Especially when it comes to communication and boundaries.

This is my first book by this author. Sunday dinners were always big in my family so I went into this book thinking about family. This book is about Elise and Graham who seem to have it all, great careers a fabulous home but Elise suffers from anxiety. To make matters worse her family is visiting from London for the week and Graham also invited his parents and sibling. Now Graham’s mother is very critical and isn’t particularly fond of Elise. This book will have most married women shaking their head and mumbling remembering their own in-laws. Elise tries to project this image of perfection doing, serving and taking care of everything while inside and alone she suffers. Graham is so blind to how his family is treating Elise and how it’s affecting her. This was a wonderful fast paced book with a happy loving couple who needed to be open, honest and support one another. I enjoyed this book because it really resonated with me and I could empathize. I especially enjoyed Elise’s reckoning. Great book if you enjoy reading about a happy married couple who have some family issues.

💭

I’m always surprised when books under 300 pages leave such a lasting impact but this one truly did. I absolutely adored it.

Elise and Graham have built a beautiful marriage together. Elise has mastered the art of keeping the peace, even at her own expense. But when years of family tension finally come to a head, Graham is forced to take a deeper look at their relationship.

First of all, Elise is a saint. The composure and grace she showed while her mother-in-law openly disrespected her in front of her own family and husband. Whew, she’s better than me. I really liked Graham but he needed a backbone when it came to his mom. He should've called his mom out for what she was a racist.

What I especially loved was the portrayal of a Black family and the way they didn’t hesitate to hold Graham accountable. I loved that this had a happy ending they were such a beautiful couple and family.

Guess who's coming to dinner.

Sunday Dinner by Zahra Woods was an emotional roller-coaster for Elise and Graham Carter as they navigate a week of family visits.
From the outside this couple has it all figured out.  Both have successful careers and a beautiful home.  A happily married couple with the usual struggles that noone really talks about. Feeling invisible, communication issues, family drama. The struggle is real and most married folks can relate to many of this things discussed in one way or another.

Trish, Graham's mother takes every and any chance she can to criticize... She honestly had me so mad I was cussing her out to myself.  Graham says nothing, just glosses over or tunes it out line he did his whole life growing up. Until Elise reaches her breaking point.

This book explores some heavy issues.  I cried so hard for Elise.

I felt every word.

This is the second book I’ve read by ZW and I’m officially a fan. I love being able to get emotionally invested in the primary and secondary characters. I like the POV shift to the other “people” in the world, when they have a direct impart on the life of our primaries. I firmly believe no one and no world is an island; the other people in their sphere are important too.

Graham and Elise, I loved them. Their story was beautifully told: love, and hurt, and growth and reconciliation with each other, their families, with their circumstances. Life doesn’t just happen, you are not a casualty if you decide to fight. And they did.

206 pages of swift, progressive, rounded, full story telling. I’m locked in on this author from here on out.

I received a ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

*I received this book as an ARC*

The way I’m crying right now. Elise and Graham? They have split me open and sewn me together again. The love they have for each other radiates off the page. And the anxiety Elise feels throughout the story is written so well. I was feeing all the anxiety with her. I only wanted to fight Graham’s family a lot. But their redemption arc totally worth it! The heartfelt talks, the steamy scenes, the watch how you talk about my wife??? Chefs kiss! Graham and Elise getting their HEA? It’s worth the anger, anxiety, and tears that you got through reading this book! It’s such a quick and heartfelt read. I recommend highly!

This book was very good! I love supporting indie authors. I will say that mother in law made me so mad I wanted to spit fire. I’m still not clear on why she didn’t like Elise, but I got some ideas 🤔😒 and she can kick rocks with no shoes on! The explosion was what I was waiting on the entire book because baby she would’ve had to leave my house the first night!! Definitely will pick up another one of this authors books!!

The book was a very easy read. The plot was definitely something relatable to probably a lot of people. The book reads more as a long short story than an actual novel. I wish there was a little more plot development. I feel like if it was more written from a dual point of view of the two main characters, we could get more of the inner thoughts of both of them. Overall, a sweet book to read.

I have so say some of this subjects in this story a relatable.. Many married couples go through these trials and strain on their marriages from outside sources/ influences. Lovingly Graham and Elise are able to get through these trials together..
