Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents: Romeo & Juliet & Godzilla

The explosive literary mashup series returns! But this time, Godzilla is taking on the classics one story at a time. O Godzilla, Godzilla, wherefore art thou Godzilla? First, it’s invading the Bard’s most revered play, Romeo & Juliet. Families at war! Forbidden love blossoming! Godzilla on its path of destruction! Fair Verona won’t be so fair for long! And that’s not Tom Scioli is returning to the series to write and illustrate a backup story starring the legendary thief entitled “Robin Hood and the Monster of Nottingham!”

From the first time I read Romeo and Juliet, I felt like something was missing. And now thanks to this book, I know exactly what that was.

Romeo, O Romeo.
Wherefore are thou...
HOLY F*CK!
IS THAT GODZILLA????

This is my first approach to this classic story. If Godzilla weren't in this, I would've never read Romeo and Juliet.

The book is well researched on the language that was used. My complaint is that Godzilla was just there. The main R&J Story was playing with Godzilla in the background with the characters basically ignoring him. It was not a full reimagining of this story. Nonetheless, it was fun enough. And the MechaGodzilla art fully covered the price for this issue for me.

Big and dumb on the outside, secretly thematically deep on the inside? Nothing can make me hate this. I would 1000% read a Godzilla mashup of every Shakespeare play.

Finally a good modern Shakespeare adaptation. The iambic pentameter went hard 🔥🔥

I love how seamlessly they insert Godzilla (and supporting Kaiju) into these classics and you just accept it. I’ll read every one of these.

Cualquier historia mejora con Godzilla, pero es como las primeras pelis. Una historia de humanos con un bicho muy de fondo (aunque la historia sea Romeo y Julieta).

If the portion of this long title Romeo & Juliet & Godzilla didn't grab you, then I don't know what I could say to convince you to read this.

The first in the Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre series, the team of Tom Scioli, Adam Tierney, and Sean Peacock boldly ask: "What if Godzilla and his foes were attacking Verona during the events of Romeo and Juliet?"

I love that there are minds that work like that. Overall, I had a fun time reading this goofy romp. There was one particularly comedically well-timed appearance of Godzilla that made me snort a laugh while all by myself. In general, I thought the weaving in of Godzilla worked shockingly well.

My biggest suggestion (and it's still fairly minor) is I wish Romeo and Juliet (and all other characters) had been drawn their age. Romeo and Juliet are meant to be young teenagers and I think it would've added to the humor if they were depicted as such instead of like the full grown adults who usually portray them on stage.

All in all though, if the idea of "Why not?" when it comes to Shakespearean adaptations appeals to you, I recommend that you give Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents: Romeo & Juliet & Godzilla by Tom Scioli, Adam Tierney, and Sean Peacock.

*2.5 stars

Sadly, this is a big step down from Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theater. Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla tries to hard to follow the original Romeo & Juliet text, and I really think it would have benefited from straying from the original plot and just going bonkers. As it is now, it’s honestly pretty boring. The bonus story about Robin Hood is more promising, but it’s also only Part One. Let’s hope the next entry in Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre can recapture the magic of the first.

I really needed this! Just a great big laugh from beginning to end! Godzilla appears just as Romeo and Juliet fall in love...and it complicates everything! If you are looking for something that will take you away from all the bad stuff going on right now this will help. Second story is Godzilla and Robin Hood - but the R/J story is the main feature!

I had a very good time with this although the actual Scioli comic at the end felt a bit perfunctory.

The main story itself was a great combination of drama and pastiche. With stunning art and excellent visual gags.

eh

Its fun, but compared to the other Godzilla mashup kind of lackluster some funny moments but overall nothing to write home about.
