This book is the first of a trilogy. It was written to be a short and easy read but enticing and intriguing. It was designed to encourage teenagers and young adults to discover the power of a story read in a book. Young people who would not even consider picking up a book just to escape the day they would do by watching a movie on a DVD or on TV, playing a video game or going to the movies. The Author, Don Festge is also a high school teacher and his motivation is obvious here. The books in this series are packed full of intrigue, mystery, voodoo magic and a story of the life of a mistreated teenage girl who has been lied to, and cruely abused by everyone around her throughout the ages, centuries it seems. Her only friends are a group of Slaves in Hispaniola on her uncle's plantation. They share her fate and from them, she will learn the powers of Voodoo magic... the Story continues in "The Bocor".

It truly is a fast and easy read, but the story telling is complex and runs deep. This is not a shallow story line quicly put together, far from it. Enthralling, beautiful storytelling.
