Some kind of magic happens when Diane Capri writes. And that magic is front and center in her “Hunt for Reacher” tales. Like her previous novels in this series, “Shadow Jack” links to a Lee Child Reacher novel (“Blue Moon”). You don’t need to have read the Reacher tale to enjoy “Shadow Jack” (but do yourself a favor and read all the Reacher novels, too). If this is all new to you, please trust me when I tell you: “Shadow Jack” is worth your hard-earned money. If you like thrilling stories packed with relatable characters, you will love this book! That goes for the entire series.

The set-up: FBI Agent Kim Otto and her partners are tasked with finding Jack Reacher—not an easy task, as any fan of Lee Child’s Reacher novels knows. Reacher is off-grid. And he likes it that way. Complicating an already daunting task is that the “trail” is 15 years old. The agents start tracking Reacher at Margrave, Georgia, the location of Child’s very first Reacher novel (“Killing Floor”). Somehow, (magic, remember) Capri makes that 15-year gap serve the story. It’s so well-written it brings those now 15-years older characters to us fresh—interesting, and captivating. And, always, moving along behind the scenes, Jack Reacher is shaping events, motivating friends and frightening enemies. Don’t sleep on these.

Kim Otto and Reggie Smithers can’t go anywhere without Cooper seemingly orchestrating what happens when they get there and telling them what to do about it. Even the simple act of stopping at a truck stop to get something to eat is impossible to do without becoming involved in theft, embezzlement, murder, warring mobs, FBI informants, and, of course, trailing right behind Reacher as he seems to set up the situation that Otto and Smithers need to finish and clean up. Really enjoyed this next Otto/Smithers/Gaspar adventure. Incredible story of mob versus mob versus mob; each one handling a different portion of the trucking industry on the East Coast and each one wanting all of it. Looking forward to the next in this great series since I have now recovered from being up all night reading and drinking lots and lots of coffee.
