L.S. O'Dea, You nailed it.

The story starts straight from where we left it in the Lake of Sins : Escape. Full adventurous and action packed chapters are served into your plate and such enjoyable nourishment it becomes for your starving curiosity. The best part is that it increases your appetite for Linda's work even more.

It was fascinating to see the whole world of Almighty, Guards and Servants from the perspectives of Almighty and Guards. Those people had knowledge and experiences of what had happened and how this world functions.

I would say in that sense it was a thrilling book. Because the reader is not left in much darkness. He feels that everything's happening right in front of him and nothing can go wrong. But they do. And that sets a higher expectation from the author's books.

The way her narration goes is spell bounding. You can see her throwing plots and twist after twist into this well written fantasy tale. This part had more action, drama and information about what goes on into this imagery world.

A true page turner is what I'll call it. The excitement it created in my mind to find out what happens next was commendable. Not many books can do that. That quality of it, urged me to give it full 5 stars.

It was an unbelievably fast paced book. Judging by the length of the book, you won't be thinking of it as a moving and continuously developing story but it is. It kidnaps your attention for a while and leaves you only when you are in the last pages.

Wait! Did I say it leaves you? No, it doesn't.

When you reach to the end, you want to find the author and request her for the next books. This series was magnificent. I became a fan of O'Dea's work from the Escape but this book has broken all the boundaries of my fandom.

I would highly recommend this series to you if you want to see some fantasy world actions.

Well, I decided not to leave you all hanging on too long for the review for the follow up of Escape: Lake of Sins #1. Needless to say, I jumped right into the second book, Secrets in Blood, of the Lake of Sins series. As expected, book number two does NOT disappoint! O'Dea picks up right where Escape left off, which was the perfect way to begin this book. There was no time jumping or guessing to be done once you began to read. We continue the almost unbelievable journey of our protagonist and her comrades and proceed to happen upon more death defying obstacles and adventures.
I love that O'Dea emphasizes the importance of family and friends in her books. This is what defines our protagonist as well and makes her such a likable character in my eyes. Secrets in Blood is again well written and, had I not needed sleep, I would have made sure to finish this novel in one sitting.
We continue the adventures of each character and see the demise of others. O'Dea does not lead us on in anyway or attempt to throw in an unnecessary twist in this novel. The story is told matter of factly and in an entertaining manner. At no point did I find myself bored or saying to myself, "well I saw that coming." This is another example of excellent writing and a unique story in a world and genre of absolutes and typical outcomes.
I believe there will be a third book in this series, at least I hope so! In which case I am again sitting on the edge of my seat awaiting the follow up so that I can see just how this incredible story comes to an end!

Premise:

Secrets in Blood is the sequel to Escape, part of the Lake of Sins series, where we meet Trinity and her breath taking fantasy, dystopian world.
In the last novel, Trinity discovered some very harsh truths about her reality, and this book follows up where Escape left us.

Review:

This was, as the previous book, quite a ride. As before, I loved many things:

- Trinity, our main character is quite likeable. She is honourable, and as Mirra keeps telling her, has too many friends. She keeps wanting to help all creatures, even under the most dangerous circumstances, but she is very mature about it most of the times and therefore tries to think things through, not going into the situations blindly, so her instinct of self-preservation remains most of the time. When she does attempt to rush things, she always seems to have someone around to help her through. So she is innately good and inspires others to be so as well, even during situations where they would naturally act in a different and even opposed manner.

- The different species or classes are something utterly new and remarkable to me in the genre. They never cease to amaze me. I would like to stress out the relationship of Mirra and Gaar; it is truly fascinating. The perfect balance between rational and animalistic features of most of the classes is something that keeps me anchored to Trinity's world.

- There is a plethora of characters, but they all have their own voice and so it is very easy to follow who is who.

- The world development is superb. I could clearly picture everything and it made sense, though it's all fantasy. The scenery where action took place ranged from beautiful to scary to disgusting, amongst others, but always able to make you feel like you are there and was, at times, quite overwhelming.

- The narrative is action packed and large sections of it are page turners. You just cannot stop until you know what comes next. On the other hand, there are bits of humour which made me even laugh out loud on a couple of occasions.

- It is a very thought-provoking book. It subtly approaches subjects like vegetarianism (What meat do you eat? Do you know how it is treated before it gets to your plate?) and, less subtly, ones like the struggle between classes, with some thinking they are above others (Almightys view all other classes as their serves and below them in all aspects).

This author has a unique writing style. The book is narrated in the third person, but each chapter focuses on one individual most of the times. Because of that, when the author uses the pronoun he or she, she is actually referring to the character the chapter focuses on most of the times, which can get confusing because it is not always done and because the last person referred is very often not that character. But it really is just a matter of getting used to it.
However, it also means that we don't really get to know much of what is going on in the minds of those 'secondary' characters, which I find a shame, since it would bring an additional dimension to the story, knowing what the others thought and felt about certain situations.

There were a few things that bothered me throughout the book. Since the narrative did grip me, I didn't take notes, so I will try to remember a few examples:

- So as I mentioned, I felt that I never really got to know what went on in most of the characters' minds; it was mostly all Hugh and sometimes Trinity and Jackson , sometimes Mirra and Gaar but not nearly as much as the previous book.

- The timeline would jump back and forth , which was not exactly too confusing, it's just I wanted to know what came next in the order it happened.

- Some scenes/explanations I consider important were skipped
There were a couple things here and there that didn't seem to be in tune with the class characteristics to which some characters belong, but nothing too important.

- Things got a bit repetitive, particularly in the middle but also certain expressions.

- Then there was Jethro and Trinity. The contact they had in this book, particularly the scene where the two were separated by the cage bars, was a bit too much. From the first book and even this one, I felt they did not know each other that well to act all love- dovey with each other. I mean yes, Trinity liked him because he accepted her for who she was and he, well, he liked her on a first instance and she did save his life but come on, they met once before all that.

- If there is one thing I could point out is that the emotional side of the book could use quite a bit of improvement, not only in the example above to show progression of feelings but also when someone dies. Particularly the deaths towards the end of the book, there should have been a bigger reaction to them, in my opinion.

- The book could use an edit, particularly when it comes to punctuation. Often times there were questions ending in periods, for instance, as well as a few misspellings, here and there, but nothing major.

Conclusion:

I wish I could give this book 5 stars. But considering what I mentioned above, it is a solid 3.5 stars for me. I am rounding it up on GoodReads and Amazon solely because I enjoy this world a lot more than other books I rated 3.5 stars, but I did not enjoy it as much as the first one.

Even so, please don't be misled! It is still an awesome book that DOES deserve your undivided attention because, despite all the flaws, it is a pearl in the universe of dystopian fantasy out there. I can honestly say it is free of most clichés which riddle other books (I will ignore the love triangle thing because it has a minor presence in the story).

At the end of the day, I am very happy I read it, and cannot wait for the next book in the series.

I did like this book. After reading the first one I started this one straight away.

Then I hit a reading slump. Which I can't really blame on this book, which has a good story. Though I thought it dragged out a bit, which didn't help.

I think there is a good chance I will read the next book some day, but right now I will need a little break. But if you enjoyed the first book I'm pretty sure you will like this as well :)

An even better read than Escape. There is more action, sometimes gory action. The transition from one characters point of view to another is one of the best I've read. It was a great way of experiencing things that would effect Trinity, instead of her just being told. I hope there's more to come from the Lake of Sins.

I am an omnivore, but I think after finishing this book last night, I'm going to stick to a veggie diet for a bit. At least until I can get a certain image or two from the ending of this book out of my mind....

O'Dea's Secrets in Blood is the excellent follow up novel to Escape, a dark fantasy series that depicts a world where most large creatures are extinct, and those that remain have been genetically bred or altered to perform certain tasks. The Almightys are the closest to humans, who seem to control the rest of the classes - the Guards, the House Servants, the Trackers, the Handlers, the Producers. A blend of human and animal, with enhanced senses and abilities, the lower classes are often held in passive ownership or harsh bondage. You get the picture. It's nasty and brutish.

O'Dea does an excellent job in creating this world, and this is why I returned to the second book, despite its huge size for this type of novel. The world and the characters she has created are rich and resourceful, they are unique and worthy of attention. I loved it. And, I also loved the differences in the two books. The initial book focused on Trinity, a mixed class Producer who escapes from her captivity, and her ignorance, and learns that the true purpose of her class is . The second book, however, leaves Trinity as a secondary character, and focuses instead on others - Hugh the Almighty and his struggles with Benedictine and the crazy scientist Conguise. The wild-bonded pair Mirra the Tracker and Gaar the Handler -- they are so awesome and incredible. The forbidden love between the Almighty Kim and the Guard Jackson.

And then there's the gore and the violence. This is a dark fantasy, and there are some scenes that will truly turn your stomach, unless you have the digestive constitution of a billygoat. O'Dea is quite comfortable in writing some tough scenes, and the author has no qualms in killing off a beloved character or two. Overall, an excellent read, and recommended.

I loved this book even more than the first book because in this book the uprising really takes place and although many creatures die from all classes many break free for the first time in their lives and this is all thanks to the bravery of one girl, Trinity, part producer and part house servant but maybe also part almighty on her father's side without knowing this! She together with her friends and protectors the tracker Mirra and the handler Gaar do all in their power to free all the others in the various camps where they were being used and abused for experimentation and forced mating and breeding. Many guards decide to join the cause and they start by removing their trackers and moving over to Hugh's house. He is an almighty who through research into the various dna samples is discovering the lie their whole lives were built upon and the precarious pyramid of classes the almighty had built with them at the top when the dna from all species was showing so many similarities! A book of great courage and endurance and doing everything to follow ones beliefs, no wonder Trinity had so many friends, she showed kindness even to her worst enemies!! dying to read the rest of this great series.

Wonderfully dark!
In the world is in chaos as war begins. The creatures are all stirring, in the day as well as night, now that they're bound in a common goal. To the Allied Classes, wiping out the Almighty and the control they've had on everyone is paramount. This is a gripping read, full of action, blood, danger, and even some romance. I received an advanced copy of the book for an honest review, and you don't want to miss out on this one. this second book of the Lake of Sins series Trinity has learned more from Gaar and Mira about survival in the wild of the forest. Unfortunately she's learned more of the truth about the rest of the world and what a Producer is really for. Trinity is kind and generous with helping others and not everything goes according to plan. There are captures, rescues, double crosses, and blood. How much death can she take? How is she going to help the other Producers live a free life if they don't want to believe the truth. The world is brutal, and she's being hunted by predators in the forest and by 3 different Almighty's that each have their own agenda. Non stop action, humor, horror, and compassion made this a page turner.

There are more characters introduced in this book and they're very complex. Non stop action, humor, horror, and compassion made this a page turner. The only issues I had were editing and they were minor distractions when I was absorbed in their world.

Great follow up to Escape! This book is full of plot twists that keep you engaged from start to finish. Learn more about the complicated world and classes as Trinity’s adventure continues.

Trinity has fled her home since discovering what truly happens to Producers that aren’t chosen to breed. She would rather remain in the forest. But Trinity’s mother is still in the Producer town. She will probably be retired, and Trinity is determined to save her.

The Almightys will stop at nothing to hide the fact that cross class breeding is possible. Trinity is living proof. She can never risk the Almightys finding her.

Hugh Truent, an Almighty, knows Trinity’s secret and is determined to find her before anyone can harm her. He needs to test her blood to get the proof of a child born of a Producer and a House Servant.

Will Trinity maintain her freedom? Who will get to her first, those bent on destroying her or those who want to save her?

Trinity had a plan but it's all gone wrong and now she needs to flee to save herself. Almighty Hugh Truent having learnt of Trinity's parentage is determined to study her and make the discovery of a lifetime - however, there are others who would kill her to hide the truth. The combination of Trinity's struggle to survive and Hugh'd determination will lead to a collision between the classes that could shatter the very foundation of their world as they know it. How will it all end up?

I enjoyed this story with took the story of Trinity and the other classes in their society further. There was plenty of drama, excitement, danger, betrayal and even tragedy. I could definitely feel some of the emotions involved in some of the events in this book - especially the celebration dinner which showed what happens if you are not careful and check things carefully. Wondering how the story is going to develop further and what will happen next.

Lake of Sins: Secrets in Blood; This is book 2 of this intelligent and thought-provoking series and sees Trinity still struggling to find out the truths of her world, especially what happened to her siblings. As with the first book, this unusual and frightening world is vividly created and the tension is ramped up throughout the story as the true horrors of class, species and societal discriminations are laid bare leading to an ending which is as horrific as any I have ever read. The story asks serious questions about the way we treat other beings we perceive as different, yet never in a didactic manner, rather we are led to our own conclusions as our hearts and minds are captured by this thrilling tale. Author LS O'Dea keeps her readers enthralled with a story which is thought-provoking, entertaining and not for the faint-hearted; and as with all of her writing, her characters are brilliantly realised.

Trinity escapes her encampment and is terrified to think of the dangerous creatures in the forest that she must avoid. Little does she realize that she has already left the most evil predators behind when she left her community. The feeling of entitlement that the ruling class revels in and their self-imposed god-like status is beyond vain. The most privileged, the most intelligent is the most terrifying of monsters because they have truly lost their humanity and prey on the lower classes as a true predator with empathy for their victims. This book is not for the faint of heart. The brutality is everywhere and it is very graphic. However, the spectacular storyline and exceptional characters make this a story difficult to put down. Fast paced with many surprises!!!!!

I very much enjoyed the story. I appreciate that it doesn't spend an excess amount of time explaining back story, but instead dives right in, allowing you to pick up the history as you go along. I originally encountered the first novel in the series while searching for horror novels. At first, I thought that it may have been either miss-categorized, or loosely categorized as a horror novel just because the story is post-apocalyptic. By the end of the story, I realized that it was labeled perfectly. I'm now obsessed with the whole series!

I liked the second book in the Lake of Sins series, Secrets in Blood by L. S. O’Dea better than the first which was mostly character introduction and world-building. This story is gripping and hard to put down. The characters are developing (and increasing) and the plot is more convoluted. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

The underlying themes make this book more than a fantasy adventure. Touching on topics such as classism, veganism, white superiority, Secrets in Blood is extremely pertinent to today’s world.

This book is darker than the first in the series. The slaughterhouse scene is rather gory, but it is very much what the domestic animals we currently eat must experience. I have been vegan for years so not sure if that makes it all more or less horrifying to me. There are some romances developing, some expected, some hints you aren't quite sure what direction they are going. A few really shocking moments that put this book more towards the violent/horror than the first book. I haven't decided yet, but I will probably read the third just to see how the storyline continues.

“Secrets in blood” is the second book in the “Lake of sins” series and picks straight up where the first book left off.Fast paced we are propelled into the life of Trinity who is on the run and tries compassionately in the meantime to help all the creatures she calls friends. As the terrible story unfolds a few of the characters are in for a lot of eye openers.I enjoyed every minute of this book and am ready to start book three.

This reads so much like a gruesome horror story that my tummy hurts when I'm reading those awful descriptive or even inferred actions! Trinity is still on the run but now her friends, the Handler and the Tracker, have been captured and she's gonna go rescue them with or without help from her allies. This is terrifying but mesmerizing stuff that I am reading, so worth the emotional impact on my senses!

Hugh has to find Trinity before the other almighty's do. He is not meant to care for anyone but finds himself saving as many of the unwanted that he can. This book is even darker, with more horrifying scenes in than the first book, Escape. I was totally enthralled with this world and I couldn't put the book down till the end, very definitely would recommend this book. I would recommend that you read the books in order though.

Great Book to Read

Like the first book in the series Lake of Sins, I totally devoured this book. I'm not going to go through the whole plot and characters. There are others who can do it better. What I will say is this story is just evolving. The writing, plot, and characters are spot on. L. S. O'Dea should know how great her series is turning out. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a well written book.

An involved extension in the Lake of Sins. The slaughterhouse scene will give you nightmares, so leave plenty of time to get deeper into the book so it's not the last thing before bed.

The characters are well developed. You really root for the heroine and her friends. The world is still bizarre, but that is the world of the Lake of Sins.

Definitely my favorite series of the year. The characters are incredible, I like them a lot. This should have trigger warnings, though, it's very dark and not for everyone. Even though the violence is not too graphic, there are some themes to this that could be triggering for people (murder, torture, cannibalism...) even if they're not described in too much detail.

This is a really good book. It holds your attention and lets the reader live vicariously in a world gone wrong. I traveled the forest and felt Trinity’s fear, Murray’s anger and Gaars weariness. This is the second book of the series and it’s really good. Thank you, Ms. O’Dea.
