The Cowboys of Chance Creek #6

The Cowboy Lassos a Bride

Rate this book
Jake Matheson loves everything about ranching the Double-Bar-K, except for his father’s controlling nature. It’s bad enough the old man won’t step down and let him run things his own way. Now Holt has demanded that Jake find a wife—in the next thirty days. Jake knows just the woman he wants–Hannah Ashton–but they haven’t even gone on a date, let alone been together long enough for him to propose. He’ll have to work fast to secure her hand in marriage before his time is up.

Hannah Ashton loves the fifteen hundred pound bison she rescued from being the object of a trophy hunt. She’s grateful for Gladys’s temporary home on the Double Bar K—and for the chance it gives her to see Jake on a daily basis. But now Holt Matheson is threatening to kick Gladys off the ranch—or eat her!—unless Hannah spends fourteen consecutive nights with Jake. What they get up to together is their business, but if Hannah misses a night, it’s bye-bye bison.

Jake can’t believe Hannah has agreed to move into his cabin, but now his brother Ned is stirring up trouble, trying to break them up before he can propose. Hannah’s beginning to think it’ll be hard to leave the ranch when her fourteen nights are over—even if she’s heading to veterinary school. She’s falling for Jake–hard–but Jake wants a traditional wife, not a career woman.

Will a pregnancy scare unite Jake and Hannah in a common goal? Or will it drive them apart for good?

Uh yeah I didn't really care for this one. Holt(Jake, Rob, Ned, and Luke's father) really pissed me off with his blackmailing, manipulative ass. I didn't find it cute that he was old and sad so he blackmailed and did his kids dirty to get his way. I thought it was disgusting. I also didn't like Hannah. The whole story she goes on and on about how Jake is selfish and how he wouldn't compromise because he didn't love her, but she was the selfish one that didn't compromise at all. Jake was always going on about how they will figure it out together. He supported her dreams even though he didn't want to be apart from her for 4 years and she was the unyielding one. She was also immature and kind of a bitch. Just sayin'! I don't know why Jake wanted her she was always snapping at him and yelling about her dreams, her plans, and how they will never work out. I didn't believe she loved Jake at all and I felt sorry for Jake. While I do like the series as a whole this one was a miss for me. On to the next one!!

In Book Six of her Cowboys of Chance Creek Series, Cora Seton returns to the charming life at Chance Creek. Ok, not so charming since they have been known to have all sorts of mishaps there. Why in her The Cowboy Catches a Bride, then even managed to capture some terrorists.. Small town America at it's most intriguing.

The Cowboy Lassos a Bride is only my second book of Ms. Seton's that I have read and I must say, I am enjoying what I have read so far, immensely (read my review on The Cowboy Catches a Bride HERE). This book is the beginning of a trilogy within the series, focusing on the brothers Matheson. Rob, the youngest of the boys has already met his match (his story can be read in book three of this series, The Cowboy Imports a Bride) but the rest of the brothers remain single much to their domineering, overbearing, pain in the ass, father's dismay.

Hannah Ashton has had it with being alone. Has had it with settling for second best and has had it with not fulfilling her own dreams. So after she rescued a 1500lb Bison, named Gladys, she manages to dump her looser of a boyfriend and start over. Ready to return to school and become a vet. Everything is all set.. that is until Arrogant, Annoying, Holt Matheson starts making strange demands. Sleep with his son for fourteen nights (all she has to do is sleep) or Gladys becomes someone's dinner. Hannah is devestated but when her current housing situation becomes messy, decides to take Holt up on it. It doesn't hurt that Jake Matheson is Hannah's dream man. Too bad she has other plans...

Jake Matheson has been promised the Double-Bar-K his entire life. He loves that ranch.. he lives for it. But his overbearing, controlling father, just won't let go of the reins. Consequently, life is a constant battle between Holt and Jake... add that to the fact that Holt is always trying to stir up things between the brothers, life is not all it's cracked up to be. But when his father tells him, be married in a month, or get off the ranch, Jake is stunned. He knows he wants Hannah Ashton but seriously, how can anyone accomplish that in a month. He has a plan but will his interfering family help or hinder him?

I liked Jake and Hannah, I like how they were willing to look at the circumstances of their lives and try to make something out of what they had. I like the way they learned to work together and managed to overcome some pretty huge obstacles. This part of the story was actually quite heartwarming.

Unfortunately, Hold Matheson made me ill. I could deal with the plot line of an interfering overbearing matchmaker with a good heart.. BUT Holt was something more. He transcended annoying.. He made promises and broke them, constantly amending what he "meant". This was a character without honor but we are supposed to like him. It would have been acceptable had he been the villain of the book but that isn't how he was written. He was so horrid, so awful that his character took over the book. Which made it a less than pleasant read. Maybe had he had a smaller part.. I don't know. For me Holt Matheson ruined this book and what makes it worse? He is sure to be a main secondary character in the next two books.

That was the only real negative about this book. The rest of the Chance Creek residents were in attendance and we got to spend Wednesday Poker Night with them all once again. What a fun time that must be with all of these amazing people. That continuity, that cohesive group is what saved this book. Their support of Jake and Hannah, their friendship and their encouragement balanced out Holt's horridness.

All in all, a solid book in the series. Not my favorite because I just couldn't stand Holt (in case you missed that). I might have been more tolerant of him had I read Rob's book. From what TCLaB implies, Holt played a huge part in Rob's story as well. My advice? Read the series in order (now that's a shocker) but read the series.. and yeah.. read this book.

I hated Holt in this, his constant blackmailing quickly turned from old man trying to help out in an odd way, to old man controlling people and manipulating everyone. I hated Ned being a childish little twerp, even if they were all shits to each other, they're like 30 and he pipes up constantly in a smarmy condescending way to 'dob' on his brother. Hannah shit me up the wall because she kept calling Jake selfish because he didn't outright say 'I want you to move away for 4 years' like no duh he doesn't accept being apart for that long he loves you. In fact she was so selfish to the very end and it infuriated me. He said he'd go to college and she's ranting about how he didn't cook dinner for her or ask how her day went and then runs into 'you expect me to stay home with kids so you can go to college' when hats exactly what she expected of him? And he was legit just trying to stay closer to her. Also, she was like 'I'm so moody I must be pregnant' and 'my pants don't fit I'm pregnant' and she'd been sleeping with him A WEEK. THATS NOT HOW IT WORKS GIRL.

I'm actually unsure if I'll finish this series now. I dislike Ned so much that I don't care if broody pants gets Fila, which I usually like broody people but he's legit a fucking brat. And while I wanted Mia's story I didn't care for Luke either because he just came across as thick headed and I wasn't interested in him. So yeah, guess I'll see.

For years now, Jake has waited for his turn to run the family ranch. However, his father is not ready to turn things over or to even consider change which is frustrating him. Now to make things even worse, his father has demanded that he marry within 30 days or lose the ranch. Problem is the only woman he has any interest in has never even gone on a date with him. Hannah can see no future with Jake because she wants to go to vet school out of state. Can they come to an agreement without either one giving up their dream?
This was another great entry in the Chance Creek series. Not only do we get to see their relationship develop with Jake and Hannah we also get an update on previous couples. Seton is able to wonderfully portray the small town romance and make readers care about all of the characters involved.

In book six in the Cowboys of Chance Creek series, Hannah Ashton needs someplace to stash the bison she’d rescued from certain death. Luckily, the man she secretly longs for offers to let her keep Gladys, the bison, on his family ranch.
Jake Matheson lost his chance with Hannah a few months back due to him flirting with another woman, but now, Hannah is visiting his ranch all the time in order to see Gladys. Then his dad gives him an ultimatum—get married within a month or leave the ranch forever. Since he already wants Hannah, he sets off to marry her, expecting her to fall in line with his life plans. Too bad for him, she has plans of her own.
I liked Hannah and Jake, but I couldn’t stand the way they let his father, his brother Ned, and even his mother manipulate them. ----- SPOILERS ----- Holt, his dad, forced Hannah to become Jake’s maid (so she’d forget about going back to school and be a housewife as a woman should) and to share Jake’s bed, or he’d kill and eat Gladys. Ned is so jealous of Jake that he tries to come between Jake and Hannah. Lisa, his mother, is so dang sweet that no one can tell her no despite how badly they’re hurting inside, and she’s so blind to the way her husband treats his sons and the women they’re with.
Other than these members of the Matheson family, I loved most of the other characters in the series, especially the newcomers Mia and Fila, who will be paired with the remaining Matheson brothers. I hope Ms. Seton will find a way to turn Ned into a sympathetic character in his own book.
Overall, this is a good book, but be warned if you don’t like it when the main characters are stuck under somebody’s else thumb for the majority of the story.

In the previous book you will remember Hannah's bison was sort of the heroine. Now owned by Hannah and named Gladys, the bison resides on the Double Bar K. Every morning Hannah visits Gladys before heading to work and Jake always seems to join her. This morning is going to be different, Jake's father, Holt, is on the warpath because Jake isn't doing things in the order his father says they should be done.

Jake is given an ultimatum, similar to the one given to Rob. His timeline however is much shorter, only thirty days. It seems Holt isn't just going to leave it at Jake though. He also issues an ultimatum to Hannah. One she hasn't a clue of how to meet.

It's while the two of them are at the Cruz's for poker night that the answer comes in an unusual way. A family reunion books the the house and Hannah, Fila and Mia will need other lodging.

Now reporting to Holt seems like such an intrusion into her life, but she can't lose Gladys and she has feelings for Jake that she would like to explore further. However, Hannah has goals and if Jake can't support them they can't have a future together.

I loved seeing all the characters especially Bella and Evan, who offer more than one solution to this couple's problems.

Plenty of family drama as Holt interferes yet again, I really feel sorry for his wife Lisa. She has to try to control these ridiculous impulse of his.

Laughter and tears, romance and sizzle, plus a couple of scares.

I've already started the next book, I love these cowboys!

Good continuation of the series

Jake has wanted Hannah for a while. So when he has a chance to get her to move in with him, he jumps at it. What he doesn't realize is that his dad is manipulating things on both sides, his and Hannah's. Can they find a way to make everything work out for all of them? Or will it all fall apart? Read this to see.

The pace is fast and the tone is uncertain yet hopeful with a character oriented storyline that has some steamy scenes. The characters are vibrant and engaging, and sometimes enraging! Holt is quite the character himself. This one is full of emotion also. Read these in order from #0 The Cowboy Inherits a Bride to the rest of this series. Then read the Heroes of Chance Creek series in order, then SEALs of Chance Creek series in order, the Brides of Chance Creek, the Turners vs... And then you can start the 2 new series Holidays in Chance Creek and the House for Sale with Navy SEAL included. Enjoy!

"I love you. I. Love. You. I'm a jealous, possessive, horny man who wants his wife by his side, but i'll do whatever it takes to make you happy." - Jake Matheson

Oho, I knew Jake was a sweet guy, but this was even better than I imagined! Turns out Rob wasn't the only Matheson boy born with a natural skill of knowing how to treat the ladies! Well, ok, Hannah didn't exactly count as a lady in my mind, but she did for poor Jake, and that's what counts.

If you thought Holt Matheson was a cunning old man who wanted his boys to get married already, you thought correctly - and with this book, he takes it a step further. After Rob and Morgan's happy marriage, the Matheson senior is causing trouble again - this time to his eldest son, Jake. Thus, Jake is told to either get married before the end of the month, or get out. No Double-Bar-K for him, no land, nothing. But Jake is not the only one Holt blackmails into his "brilliant" plan. Hannah Ashton needs Holt's permission for Gladys, the bison she rescued, to stay at the Double-Bar-K, so she has to agree to spend two weeks - from morning to night - with Jake. Hannah and Jake don't mind, in fact the deal works just fine for them, only there's a slight problem. Jake wants Hannah as his wife - always did - and Hannah wants to leave Chance Creek to study in order to become a vet. Can two people who obviously love each other but want very different things in life overcome their differences and try to works things out between them? Or will Holt's matchmaking schemes separate them when they're meant to be together?

Where to start... I'll start with the good stuff. And that good stuff was Jake. All of him. Not a single speck of him made me cringe or facepalm. Despite what Rob said, I think Jake was working very hard to show Hannah how much he loved her and that he was willing to share the house chores with her. That he wanted equality. And when he wanted to leave everything behind in order to study just because he needed to be near Hannah, my heart nearly stopped beating. Oh, you sweet, sweet man! What a catch you could have been in the real world!

All that sexy, caring, romantic, clearly-born-to-be-a-perfect-father mass of testosterone, all this brilliance, all this talent and tenderness in bed... and it goes wasted on Hannah. No, seriously, she may not be as bad as Claire - who honestly is a bitch-level all on her own - but she's a good second-from-the-top on that particular list. You want to study? I love you! But you don't have to be like that to the poor guy who worships the ground you walk on - some of us are in even worse states and we don't treat others the way you do, Hannah, dear. It's not the same way Rose treated those around her, not at all. Hannah wanted intependence, but she wanted Jake to be hers, too. She was allowed to leave Chance Creek, but God forbid Jake enlists and joins her wherever she's going! Nooo, he has to stay back and wait for her for four years - IF all goes well, and that's a big if, in case the capital letters didn't give it away. The wonderful man was working his butt off to make her happy, and nothing did it for her! Instead she got even angrier with each sweet move he was making - like she was expecting him to do something wrong. Let alone the fact she slept with him and then blamed his dad for it - uh, no, Gladys or no Gladys, if you don't want to sleep with a man, you just don't, bison be damned. And since you had no reason for hormones to do their magic (if you know what I mean), there was no excuse for this whole series of trashy, over-the-top reactions.

Funny thing is, Holt, the mastermind behind all this, came off as quite the hated old fellow in this book. In Rob's story he really was a bastard, but I came to realize he's just old and wants grandkids soon - he's just too much of an uneducated brute to know how to do it with tact. Kinda reminds me of a less polished MacGregor patriarch... Anyway, let's hope he doesn't try to do the same with Ned and Luke.

As for Ned the Brute, well... Turn out he's not that dumb and bad after all. I guess he's just misunderstood. Being the second-born, always living in the shadow of either Jake who was the heir, or Rob who was a hidden genius, it's only natural for him to act like an oversized bully. But that doesn't mean he's that bad. True, he was a jerk to both his sisters-in-law in their respective stories so far, but the way he treated Fila tells a different story. It was so much... Ned-ish. All harsh and violent, and yet, it looked like a grumpy bear trying to make a scared lamb see he's actually a vegan so the lamb doesn't have to feel scared. He didn't coddle her, instead he brought forth - even for a little - the woman he knew she could be. And that showed that while he can't read, and his manners suck, Ned cannot be blamed for lack of a good heart and good intentions.

Now that it's Ned's turn, I can't wait to find out how he'll act to get Fila permanently by his side. And I'm just dying to find out how Holt will behave - screw that, I want to see how long he'll hold back before he starts meddling again! Hahahaha! Once again, Cora Seton managed to give me a book to keep me sated while at the same time getting me hungry for the next story! Can't wait!

the cowboy lassos a bride

This book 6 you should read from book 1 or at least book 4 on.
I wanted to like this book but I really didn’t. It’s written well. Follows Jake who has feeling for Hannah.
They make out before she breaks up w/her boyfriend which for me is cheating since he didn’t know they done.
These two are good together.
I was very frustrated with Hannah in middle the drama she caused seem to honestly be her. But last couple books seem make men be the ones that have bend even when they say they meeting in middle.
This books has a lot of meddling from his father which after Robs story I’d have though his brothers would be on to and it’s not cute/funny. The mother also seems to act like she has no clue.
This book has a HEA

Jake and Hannah are basically forced into a relationship by his dad, but can they take it real?

Jake's dad Holt is forcing him to marry in a month or lose taking over the ranch. Hannah is keeping a pet bison at their ranch but now Holt threatens to kill the bison and eat it if she doesn't sleep with Jake for two weeks. He is a mean guy and threatens her daily with killing the bison. As things progress, they start to fall for each other but the the trust she has in Jake is broken. When Jake finds out what his dad did to her he is furious. But he doesn't confess the reason he wants to marry within a month. When she finds out she is so furious she leaves him. Will the work it out and we can still go to veterinary school? Who does Jake compromise with her?

I was waiting for this brother's story as you could see the hero's interest in the heroine over the past few books. The chemistry and main plot didn't let you down. However, the hero's father needs to be tied up some place and left. He's sounds like something my father would do if he cared even 1/4th as much as this father seems to.

Getting back to the hero and heroine, you imagine the struggles they are facing and are almost cheering for them. The heroine really needed to get a tiny bit of metal in her spine as everyone seemed to walk all over her. Glad to see she was getting there. I liked the hero/heroine interactions and the overall plot of the story.

I did enjoy this book, but there were times that I wanted to smack Hannah, Jake, and Jake's father, Holt. Holt basically blackmails his sons to get his way. He tells Jake that he needs to get married or he will lose the ranch to his brother, Ned. Holt blackmails Hannah by threatening to kill and the bison that she adopted. Hannah needs to share a bed with Jake for two weeks.

Hannah and Jake kind of go along with Holt's demands. So many things could have been avoided if the two of them talked and stopped making so many assumptions. The book was cute and frustrating at the same time. I enjoyed the end of the book so I'm glad that I stuck with it.

Another good story by Cora Seton. Jake and Hannah were a great couple, but Holt is a manipulative jerk. I'm not sure why Jake took so long to realize that he had to give a little in order to get what he wanted. I'm glad Hannah finally stood up for what she wanted. They both stood up to Holt, which was the best part! The best line was when Lisa responded to the question about how she dealt with Holt. It went something like this: I only listen to half of what he says and disregards the rest! LOL

I have been reading this series for awhile now - when I need mindless reading. This was the story of Heather and Jake and I found it really unbelievable and kind of boring. I think there are a few more in the series and I will probably get to them at some point, but this one did not make me want to run and finish it!

Been a busy couple of weeks so it took longer than normal to read this book! It was one that I hated to put down when I did have a few minutes here and there to read!
Scheming on both sides brings this couple together, but it's not without it's hiccups! A great story over all and now I'm off to read the next in the series! Bring on Ned's story!

Good book

As always I thoroughly enjoyed this story from chance creek. Although sometimes this one felt more like a business transaction than an passionate love story I've come to expect from Cora Seton. Eventually love becomes the most important thing, but I just didn't feel the same about this one.

Jake is the oldest son and runs the Double D Ranch. The work is divided between him and his brothers. Hannah is an employee at
Bella’s Vet Clinic. When she decides to split with her boyfriend Jake sees his chance. Read to see all the twists and turns that happens.

I seriously do not like holt. And there would have been less drama of the characters would have just talked to each other.

Moving on to the next book. I think I can stomach 2 more about Luke and Ned but if new people get roped into the story, I don’t know If I can handle it.

I liked both main characters, eventhough it took them a long time to figure out what compromizing really means.

But the dad?! If I was that man's wife I would have clocked him with a iron pan a long time ago. Such a stubborn old jackass.

Love Chance Creek

Not gonna lie, I'm a little obsessed with this series. And all of these hot cowboys. Man, Holt is a.pesky meddling old fart. One minute I like him. The next I don't. I guess he just has a bad way (or is it genius?) way of mapping out his son's futures.
