Original sic fi romance with a strong female character

I find it hard to write a review for a short story without giving away spoilers but I liked it so much that I’m willing to give it a try. Icebound is a story about a strong but terrified young woman Thea Jackson who is trapped in her apartment while the next Ice Age is about to begin.
The realistic descriptions of the people outside and inside her building becoming all instinct as they flee the cold while Thea can’t escape, made Thea’s sense of desperation more poignant. Of course, as it’s a short story, the story quickly moves on to her boyfriend who arrives because he hopes to take her with him.
Thea is a great, kick-ass heroine, willing to risk herself to expose a criminal organization. The short story is described as a sci fi romance short story, but if I compare this to all the other romances I have read, I would say that it’s very different from those. Claire Chilton’s male character isn’t alpha male. William Devlin is a sweet, young man. He doesn’t blame her for her crimes and acts optimistic when he says, “Maybe the next world will be a better one.” Thea seems a lot tougher than him.
There’s a mystery about Thea in the end that I found very intriguing and I hope I don’t have to wait long for the second book to arrive so I can find out what it is.

I enjoyed this short, short story. It was nicely written and I could imagine her panic of being stuck in a room while the end of the world is looming. I loved the description of the smoke stack falling - I could actually imagine it as it happened. Also, I quite like William.
