Shrunkation: An Adventure Romantic Comedy

Rate this book
This was supposed to be a marriage-saving vacation. But the stakes just got bigger...literally.

Winning a dream vacation to an all-inclusive Cancun resort was supposed to be what Catalina and Trey needed to save a marriage that's on the brink of crumbling into pieces. But a relationship in trouble may be the least of their worries when they’re accidentally shrunk to a miniscule size by the sinister, technology-forward company, Mankind2Mars.

Their vacation turns into a thrilling adventure as their now tiny bodies must learn to navigate in a giant world. They must avoid the perils of being crushed while also escaping the clutches of enormous birds, crabs, and one very grumpy chimpanzee. Catalina and Trey have to work together to travel the vast, beachy landscape in order to find their way back to the resort in hopes the answer to regrowth is there. In doing so, will their love for each other expand even bigger than before?

This action-adventure rom-com is an exciting tale of true love and survival.

What I think Amesta nailed here is that a story can be funny as well as poignant. You can dig into the depths of communication issues and trust and all the things that are crucial in keeping a long-term relationship healthy, while also leaning into the absurd. Because there are few things more absurd than having to navigate the world being an inch tall and being attacked by seagulls. But that (and so many other moments of action craziness) are balanced against Trey and Catalina having to work through what caused the rift in their marriage, and if it can be healed. Shrunkation is also having a very real conversation about carrying emotional labor and what caring for – actually taking care of – someone looks like. It also is looking at the ways in which our old traumas can keep us from being able to trust a change when it is happening.

I received an ARC of this book from the author, it has not effected the contents of my review, just its timing.

Thank you to author Janine Amesta for the arc! This is the perfect summer read! The marriage in trouble love story between Catalina and Trey is spicy and resolved beautifully, there is plenty of adventure with the Honey I Shrunk The Kids-like shrinking, and it takes place in the lovely setting of Cancun, Mexico. This book also kept me on my toes for which animal or other impediment Catalina and Trey would encounter next even though the reader quickly realizes these are two very strong main characters. I’ve loved all of Janine’s books that I’ve read and I can’t wait to see what she writes next!

This is such summer fun! A bonkers plot with a heartfelt romance; perfect for fans of marriage in trouble, beach reads, empanadas, evil hoodie-wearing billionaires getting their comeuppance, and those that can see the vision of a Honey I Shrunk the Kids romance.

This was an ARC I received from the author, Janine Amesta. My opinions are my own.

Catalina and Trey's marriage is in trouble. Catalina is exhausted from her demanding work, nearing burnout, and incapable of forgetting some foolish and hurtful things Trey said to her months ago. She's feeling unappreciated and ignored, not to mention misunderstood. Trey knows that he screwed up, but he thinks all they need is some quality time together. He won a weekend stay at a luxury resort in Cancun, and hopes that in this new and exciting place, he will be able to persuade Catalina to fall in love with him again.

Things take a turn when the arguing couple find themselves shrunk to a quarter-inch size by the whims of an arrogant tech billionaire. Now, as well as trying to figure out a way to reconcile, the couple need to dodge enormous obstacles like crabs, sand fleas, and hungry gulls, as well. They have very little food and water, and have to make their way back to the hotel, hoping they can attract the attention of someone who might be able to help.

As well as Catalina and Trey's POVs, we also get to follow Sasha, a minion of the evil tech billionaire. Even when she's had misgivings about the company, she still stayed in the job to make enough to help pay for her dad's hospital bills. She's the only one who figures out what happened to Catalina and Trey, and she goes against the advice of the company to stay behind at the resort to look for the teeny-tiny missing couple.

This is a fun book, clearly inspired by Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. However, that was not a movie that made much of an impact on me. I know I watched it a very long time ago, when I was little, and while I know many have fond memories about it, it never made much of an impact on me. On the other hand, if there was such a thing as shrinking technology, I find it terrifyingly plausible, in today's political and financial landscape, that some moronic tech bro would callously use it for fun, never bothering to think about the dangers or wider consequences.

When they get to the resort, the rift between Catalina and Trey is getting wider, made worse by their failure to communicate clearly with one another. Catalina is overworked and exhausted, and Trey, for all that he clearly adores his wife, has not been shouldering as much emotional labour as she. Once they end up in an unusual and perilous situation, they are forced to work together to survive, but even that starts out as fraught because of the tensions between them. After being exposed to repeated danger and starting to communicate more honestly with one another, it turns out that a lot of their problems have been made worse by their own unspoken insecurities that they've been projecting onto the other person.

This book was entertaining, and the concept is very novel. I liked it well enough, and Amesta writes engaging characters. I just don't see myself wanting to pick it up for repeated re-reads, which is what characterises my favourite romances.

Judging a book by its cover: Apparently, when Ms. Amesta tried to post images of this cover on Threads, her posts were flagged as inappropriate, and she was in danger of having her account shut down. I genuinely don't see why. There is no more nudity than you see on a lot of romance covers, and this one is cute and clever and funny as well. Go home, algorithm, you're drunk!

Oh no! Shrunkation awakened my inner nerd. Let me do a quick tldr before I dive into my appreciation for Janine Amesta’s craft. Shrunkation is fun and funny. One of my favorite things in romance is when an author takes a bananas plot and uses it to dive into very real relationship dynamics. This is a marriage in trouble romance in which a desperate attempt at a romantic getaway turns into a desperate attempt to survive.

On to the nerdery!

This review is a bit of a love letter to two different people, Janine Amesta, for writing romances that bring me joy, and Weekend Reader (@weekendreader_), whose dives into the romance genre always give me a lot to think about. Weekend Reader’s posts on the Happily Ever After/Happy For Now (HEA/HFN) element of romance have been swimming around in my brain, and Shrunkation sparked some of those thoughts.

Weekend Reader asserts that good sex and saying “I love you” aren’t sufficient for a believable HEA/HFN. I kept that in mind as I started reading Shrunkation. Trey and Cat have already fallen in love and committed to each other, but it wasn’t enough. Trey loves his wife and wants to mend his marriage. Cat isn’t sure she wants to stay married (also not sure that she wants a divorce), but she does know she doesn’t have the emotional energy to fix their relationship. They blew past their HFN and now something fundamental needs to change for us to believe in a new one for them.

One of the elements Weekend Reader looks at is how the lovers treat each other – who is doing the emotional labor? Another reviewer called Trey “rather gormless,” which isn’t a bad description of him at the start of the book. He has made his wife mad and he doesn’t know how to fix it beyond an apology and attempts at seduction. Cat can’t let go of her anger.

There’s a moment that becomes the before and after point, and it isn’t when the unethical tech bro billionaire shrinks them. It’s the moment when Trey realizes what he hasn’t been doing in their marriage. He has always thought Cat is amazing. When he realizes that standing back and admiring his wife isn’t actually an act of care, the whole tenor of the book shifts. He becomes more competent. Cat is able to remember why she fell in love with him. For the rest of the book, they are still fighting for their lives and working on their marriage, but as an active team. When Trey takes on his share of the emotional and mental labor, the HEA becomes believable.

Partners who take care of each other is one of the hallmarks of a Janine Amesta romance. Her main characters don’t just support their lover’s dreams, they find ways for those dreams to flourish. Previous books prove that she writes great dialogue and builds emotional growth, but Shrunkation demonstrates a real skill for writing action.

I received this as an advance reader copy from the author. For transparency I need to say that I have bullied Janine Amesta into being my online friend. She is one of the kindest people you’ll find on the internet and a wildly talented artist. My review has been entirely honest, though unbiased simply isn’t possible.

The stress of work has become too much and her marriage is a burning bridge she keeps pouring gasoline on. Trey has the perfect solutions… one free vacation to Cancun. Maybe the beach, ocean, and a little white bikini will help him set his marriage back on track after he inserted his foot in his mouth. And it could have, if the vacation wasn't actually an attempt by the tech-company Mankind2Mars at an experimental human trial of their shrink ray. Now the size of a pea, Cat and Trey have to figure out how to make it back to the resort before they fall victim to the small inconveniences made catastrophic by their microscopic size.

Having already acquainted myself with Amesta’s style and those romantic leanings of her novels, I was 100% ready for another ARC. But, it was the blurb that sold me on “Shrunkation”. I was already laughing and writing up some punny tags for my reading experience. Then, when I received my copy, I was hooked. Cat was a relatable character with an independent streak that was her most redeeming feature and fatal flaw. As the eldest daughter of an eldest daughter, I spent a lot of time sympathizing with Cat… while also hoping she would let her guard down for her husband. Trey was absolutely hilarious and full of yearning. I honestly would have finished this book faster if I hadn't been part of a wedding this weekend.

An action-packed rom-com, this is one of those novels I would love to see on screen as a live-action. It had all the right vibes, great punchlines, and enough energy and passion to keep an audience on its toes. I will surely never look at iguanas the same way again. If you need a laugh and lighter read (that somehow still explores the depths of marriage and connection), “Shrunkation” is a novel you should pick up. I had a great time reading it, and I'm very much a Grinch when it comes to romance.

Ok. If you are looking for the perfect, light-hearted, feel-good, RomCom beach read this summer - you can stop looking. I’ve found it for you. It’s “Shrunkation” by Janine Amesta.

Trey wants nothing more than to bridge the gap between he and his wife Cat created by a single, hurtful comment made in an argument. With limited funds for a grand gesture, Trey enters a free raffle for a vacation in Cancun and wins. However, things go sideways when the couple find themselves in their very own version of “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” and suddenly the problems that seemed so big have… erm… shrunk in size.

This book is just downright delightful. Amesta has an amazing way with characters that has you relating to them within the first few pages, and from that moment on you’re immediately sucked in to the story. With a plot line that many of us can relate to, “Shrunkation” takes us on a journey of comedic mishaps that helps a couple struggling to get over a bump in the road realize that there are often much bigger problems we face than the smaller things we bicker about. A lesson about communication in relationships wrapped in a package that feels more like a laugh-out-loud Disney RomCom, “Shrunkation” is just an absolute joy of a book. Janine Amesta is an author we are absolutely sleeping on; she deserves to be running with the big names in contemporary romance.

If you’re putting together your summer reading list for watching the kids at the pool or sitting beside the water, definitely put “Shrunkation” on your list. I promise you that you won’t regret it.

What a delicious romp this is! "Honey I Shrunk the Kids' is the inspiration for this romcom – which is an absolute delight of a romance folly - both ridiculous and heartwarming 💕

Catalina and Trey's marriage is in trouble. Cat holds her grudges tightly and Trey is bewildered by her, even though he is still very much in love. Trey signs them up for a totally dodgy weekend in Cancun (Free! Just attend the seminar!) in the hope that they can reconnect. When they get there, an argument and some romance-reasons means a laser machine shrinks them down to one inch high.

Secondary character Sasha is a key part of the shrinkage action and I loved the chapters from her point of view. I won't name names, but there's a very satirical (and topical) depiction of Sasha's hyper-wealthy megalomanic boss - who luckily gets his comeuppance.

For Cat and Trey, it's one adventure after another as they struggle to survive, and get their marriage back on track. It's steamy and silly and terrific fun. There's a giant empanada, unexpected places to shelter, crabs to negotiate and a hostile chimpanzee. Seagulls are an issue, and they have the steamiest fun on the back on an iguana. Through it all, they see each other's strengths and Cat softens her stance. I adored the joy of it all!

Thank you to Janine Amesta for the ARC - her imagination and sense of the absurd are extraordinary. Opinions are my own.

4 stars for me.

Vacation to an all-inclusive Cancun resort is what Trey needs to save his marriage.Catalina don't see the point,as Trey really hurt her,but problems at work force her to get few days off anyway. When they’re accidentally shrunk to a miniscule size by technology-forward company, Mankind2Mars,the only way to survive is to have each other back.Fighting for their lives, running from gigantic crabs and angry champanzee those two might realize that their marriage is worth saving.
Will they be back to their normal size,or stay tiny forever?

Well, that was something that I can say I never read before.Marriage problems with survival was a great and fresh read, enjoyable and fun.At the beginning I was not so sure if I will like Cat,I get that she was hurt, but her attitude fast got annoying.Glad I stick with it,when I get to know Cat past, present and her insecurities,I was rooting for them to save this marriage.Being small was not such fun when you looking to avoid spiders and everything that can eat and squish you,yet author wrote it in a funny and adventurous way.My favorite is the shell part,it was emotional, tender and spicy, that gives me a hope that there's more for them.My second book by this author, and another win for me.

If you like marriage in trouble, crazy experiment gone wrong and survival I would recommend this book.

Thank you author for arc,my review is honest and my own.

This book was ridiculous in the best way. It was so much fun to read! I picked it up without knowing what the premise was and it was hilarious. This is a Honey, I Shrunk the Kids inspired romance with the main characters being a married couple that is having issues at the moment. Trey said something that really upset his wife, Cat, and she is not at all happy with him or able to forgive him (she has some issues being vulnerable or feeling feeling like she is failing when trying to do more than any one person could). In order to try and save his marriage Trey signs up for a dodgy free vacation and actually wins! So off they go....only it does not go as expected.

Oh, this was so much fun. I don't really know what I would do if I were shrunk to inch in size. That would be awful, and it definitely is not easy for them, but I loved seeing their small adventures! All the giant animals and food and all the things!

We also have point of view chapters from Sasha who works for the evil rich guy who owns the company and who made the shrinking tech. I really enjoyed her chapters as well and how it all ended up. I really just enjoyed this one so much once I started I didn't stop until I finished. Such a great read!

One shell of good time!

I loved all the "honey, i shrunk" films as a kid and now i finally got to read the spicier version.

Janine has managed to pull all the elements from the film and mixed it with marriage frustrations, acceptance and healing.

As for the story she made so many cute and funny adventures for Cat and Trey. My favourite was by far the empanada 🤣

Cat is a strong woman trying to hold everything together at work for a non profit and trying to help kids avoid what she went through.

Trey is the classic himbo but also such a green flag because what do you mean he lists all the ways he loves her. (Number 15 😭)

Join them on their discovery that sometimes things being completely out of control can make you look and approach things differently. Also that communication can be healing.

Honestly i loved this couple so much and i want more! So please Janine im hoping this becomes like the films and more is on the way.

This will make a great holiday read with its beach theme romcom vibes!

Thank you so much to the author for the Advanced copy, this is my honest opinion

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, but make it...adult?

That's basically Shrunkation by @janineamesta, and I had so much fun reading it.

This is the second book I've read that's she's written, and I've loved both of them.

One of my favorite things is finding indie authors who are doing something completely different, and this book is unique!

Our MCs are on a marriage-saving vacation (or so the hubby hopes) when things go completely off the rails and they accidentally get shrunk to a microscopic size.

Suddenly birds, crabs, and basically everything around them become life-threatening obstacles.

But underneath all the adventure, humor, and chaos is a relationship-in-trouble story that will pull at the heartstrings.

Just look at these tropes!

🏖 Adventure RomCom
🐚 Marriage in Trouble
🐚 Only One Seashell
🐚 Himbo That Yearns
🐚 Open Door Spice
🐚 No Third Act Breakup

This was SUCH a fun adventure romance! Shrunkation was full of laugh-out-loud moments and the reigniting of the spark between Cat and Trey was beautiful. This is the perfect example of two people coming back together and fighting for each other, and I loved that so much.

The premise of Cat and Trey being so tiny was objectively hilarious, and it led to some incredible moments! Without spoiling it, I’m particularly entertained by the role of animals in this journey. There was no shortage of entertainment in this book in addition to watching Cat and Trey come fully back together.

Shrunkation brought me all the amusing moments as well as the love story between Cat and Trey. I really enjoyed being along for the ride on the crazy journey bringing Cat and Trey back to their happiest selves. This was a fun take on adventure romance, and once again, Janine Amesta has delivered on all the best parts of a love story!

Thank you to the author for an advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Marriage in trouble? CHECK.
Overwhelmed wife? CHECK.
Husband desperate to save his marriage? CHECK.
Shady vacation to fix the marriage? CHECK.
Unethical company with a shrink ray? CHECK.

The emotions that Cat and Trey go through as they are drifting apart in their marriage, as they “win” a free vacation, as they are shrunk to miniatures, are so fun to watch. This story is WILD, but reading about how the couple rides an iguana, and finds sustenance in a discarded empanada, and fights crabs, and considers how far the walk to the resort will actually take (and riding on shoes is totally worth it to get back!), makes the story worth reading and enjoying.

The extra POV from Sasha (who works for the tech company in charge of the shrink ray project) is an interesting choice that helps round out the story.

If you grew up on Honey I Shrunk the Kids, this one is for you!

Shrunknation is a vacation gone wrong with many hilarious adventures for Trey and Cat. This is a story you will want to read, especially if you are in need of a laugh with some romance. And don't forget things that can kill the main characters.

Can this Shrunknation vacation save their marriage, or will it kill them before they can get help? I loved the banter between Trey and Cat and the way he is determined to show her she still loves him. This story is for anyone who needs a laugh and is willing to stretch their imagination. I loved vacationing with Trey, Cat, and their wildlife friends.

I received an ARC of Shrunknation and this is my honest review. All opinions are my own.

If you love marriage in crisis, one sea shell, protective MCs, grumpy/sunshine, and adventure, then Shrunknation is needed on your TBR list.

Like the author, I too was a child of the Honey I Shrunk The Kids franchise of movies. I was therefore excited to get to read an advanced copy of Janine Amesta's latest book, Shrunkation.

Usually when I see books billed as "rom-coms" I remain skeptical because one or two jokes in a book does not make a rom-com in my humble opinion. I found myself highlighting lots of hilarious passages in this book.

In addition to humor, this book had it all--action, adventure, sex on an iguana (you just have to read it!)...the works!

I think what I admire the most about Amesta's writing is how clever it is. I love the challenges she put Trey and Cat through in this book both physically and emotionally before finding a way to wrap it up in one big happily ever after.

Thank you to the author for an advanced copy of this book.

Beggars couldn’t be choosers, and she was on the edge of begging.

What can I say about this book? Funny, sexy, beautifully written. another exquisite story from Janine Amesta.

There are laugh out loud lines,

Emotional moments that will tear at your heart,

Spice, and fun, giant (if you're tiny) iguanas who have seen too much, and so much more.

I can't recommend this highly enough for a feelgood read, with the perfect HEA.

Four stars.

A super cute little romantic comedy. Trey is on the outs with his wife, Catalina, because he said something very stupid and hurtful. When he wins an all expenses paid vacation, he tries to fix things with her. But he very much did not read the fine print. One thing leads to another, and the next thing you know you're less than an inch tall, standing inside a dropped empanada, being attacked by seagulls.

I really enjoyed this. Trey and Cat are clearly still very much into each other, but they need to work through communication issues. There's lots of humor and some very sexy kissing and a lot of very novel and pressing danger. I was genuinely concerned about how they'd get back to full size.

Very summer, very fun.

Shrunkation is one of the funnest books I've ever read - it's a perfect summer romcom!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A marriage in trouble, two characters who are both realistic and relatable, an evil villain CEO, a morally questionable scientist, a pissed off chimp, and a whole lotta laughs alongside a hilarious romantic adventure.

It's relatable if you've ever felt a disconnect with someone you love - sometimes you just ... take an axe to a bridge and then you need to rebuild it but you don't know how.

There's some heartfelt stuff, this couple is working through it - but it's not heavy as a reader. I really felt for Cat and Trey, and they're just so lovable.

The action, the humor, the relatable romance, the callbacks and references. Just everything in this book was great.

A Heartwarming and Engaging Romance

Shrunkation by Janine Amesta is a wonderfully written romantic story that captures the reader's attention from the very first page. The characters are well developed, relatable, and genuinely endearing, making it easy to become emotionally invested in their journey. Amesta skillfully blends romance, emotion, and charm to create a story that is both entertaining and heartfelt.

What stood out most was the strength of the character development. Each character feels authentic, and their relationships unfold naturally, drawing the reader deeper into the story. The writing is engaging and polished, making for a smooth and enjoyable reading experience.

If you enjoy romantic fiction with memorable characters and a compelling storyline, Shrunkation is a book well worth reading. Highly recommended.

🌟 ARC Review 🌟

I was lucky enough to be part of the ARC team to read this book before its release, and below are my honest thoughts!.

Review: You know how some people (myself included) watch a funny or happy
Movie after watching a scary one? That’s the vibe of this book, the book to read after something that broke you or to get out of a slump. It had me giggling while also saying “AWE 🥹” and “YOU TELL HIM CAT!” It was lighthearted, funny and incredibly adorable. Will definitely be a book I reread and recommend to others (especially if someone is just getting back into reading) loved it 🥰 Did I mention that the bickering is so incredibly relatable? Was I cackling? Yeah, grab this boook and ENJOY

THE WORLD NEEDS THIS BOOK!

I was feeling pretty dismal about (gestures vaguely at everything) and SHRUNKATION came to save me at just the right time. A marriage in trouble romance with Honey I Shrunk the Kids vibes?? Yes please!

I adored this story about Cat and Trey fighting their way back to each other while they fight their way back to a normal human size. This is the kind of deeply romantic, super steamy, and completely bonkers romcom that just checks every single box for me.

Janine Amesta’s crisp prose and brilliant creativity had me so hooked I couldn’t put this book down. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!

This is such a fun adventure romance and it really puts things in a different perspective (ha!).
But, I really liked how everything was described. Everything would be so different if you were shrunk, and the most mundane things are now dangerous or just ridiculously oversized and Janine nailed the situation.
But man, as if trying to mend your marriage wasn't hard enough when your wife hates you, let's do it while an inch tall on a beach.
9/10 - imagine honey, I shrunk the kids, but on a beach with a second chance romance and some spice.

3.5 stars rounded up

A shorter contemporary romance, Cat and Trey’s marriage is in trouble when they are shrunk down in size by a shady company and must deal with full size world problems on top of their relationship issues. Part rom-com, part sci-fi, and part adventure, it was a light read with a few open door scenes. I didn’t get as invested in their relationship as I wanted (probably because of their miscommunication, her stubbornness and a too quick resolution) but found their challenges while being small hilarious.

How fun was this?? I find marriage in crisis romance to be incredibly underrated despite probably being the most relatable (but maybe that is because I'm nearing 40 now) so I was pumped to read this one (early, thanks to the author!). I loved the concept of getting shrunken and trying to fix that while also trying to fix your relationship. Plus it allowed for so many silly hijinks! Giant birds, large terrifying crabs, sleeping in a shell, catching a ride on an iguana, just so fun and silly yet so deep and emotional. At times I did find it hard to conceptualize their actual size but I think that's more of a me problem since I can't really imagine images well. And I did find the FMCs reason for being so upset to be maybe a bit of an over-reaction but at the same time I get it? Hard to explain really like yes it wasn't that big of a deal but I can understand why it was TO HER. Overall though I really enjoyed this read and I loved how despite it all happening within like 2 days, so much happened to keep it entertaining.

This book is magical. From the opening pages to the end I feel as though I was entranced; being in Trey and Cat's world was funny and crazy and just overall a wild ride.

After a misunderstanding between Trey and his wife Cat, they both agree to take a vacation in an effort to find their way back to each other. What transpires through their time in Cancun is hilarious, intense, and yet somehow sweet. At just one inch tall, their escapades are just too much fun to experience and I almost wished for more. This has a will they/won't they vibe unlike any other. I loved it!

“So if we come across Buddy or a tiny divorce lawyer, I’m warning you right now that I’m going to have to fight them. I’d fight them. I’d fight giant seagulls. I’d fight anything for you.”

“Know what? That you were the only person I’d want to snuggle up with on the back of an iguana? The moment I met you, babe.”

“Would you say this was a shell of a good time?”

This was a cute little adventure filled romance between a married couple on the outs who “win” a free vacation to Cancun. Except, not reading the fine print, they don’t realize they’re part of a science experiment. They find themselves shrunk to miniature size and must learn how to work together to find help. I liked Trey trying to win back his wife’s love and I liked Cat realizing it was ok to lean on Trey.

ARC from author, review all mine.

This was such a fun and delightful book.
I do admit I was slightly skeptical in the beginning, but the more I read, the more fun it felt. I could say this a second chance in a way and I did love to see how Trey and Cat rediscovered their passion and love for one another.
Also, the premise and the idea of being so small felt rather new and intriguing.
If you're in the mood for a fun, lighthearted read, this could be the book for you.

This book was hilarious, and super sweet. Such a unique story, and a great view of a married couple having troubles, on top of the whole adventure that they are thrown in to. Such a deep look through their eyes, along with the book being so much fun.

I wish I could see all the pictures! And honestly, I really want to ride an iguana now! I don’t think I will look at sand the same way again either.

Definitely a recommend from me if you are looking for a deep, and fun book.
